Influence of Pyrolysis Temperature on Product Distribution and Characteristics of Anaerobic Sludge
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternate energy, anaerobic sludge, bio-oil, hydrocarbon, pyrolysis
Pyrolysis of anaerobically digested sludge can serve as an efficient biomass for biofuel production. Pyrolysis produces products like char, bio-oil, and combustible gases by thermochemical conversion process. It can be used for sludge treatment that decreases sludge disposal problems. Sludge produced from anaerobic co-digestion (microalgae, cow dung, and paper) waste has high carbon and hydrogen content. We investigated the candidacy of the anaerobic sludge having high heating value (HHV) of 20.53 MJ/kg as a reliable biomass for biofuels production. The process of pyrolysis was optimized with different temperatures (400, 500, and 600 °C) to produce high quantity and improved quality of the products, mainly bio-oil, char, and gas. The results revealed that with the increase in pyrolysis temperature the quantity of char decreased (81% to 55%), bio-oil increased (3% to 7%), and gas increased (2% to 5%). The HHV of char (19.2 MJ/kg), bio-oil (28.1 MJ/kg), and gas (18.1 MJ/kg) were predomin... [more]

Examining the Industrial Energy Consumption Determinants: A Panel Bayesian Model Averaging Approach
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Bayesian model averaging, entrepreneurial activity, GEM, industrial energy consumption, panel data
The paper explores the impact of early stage and established entrepreneurs on industrial energy consumption across European countries for the period 2001−2017. It proposes that industrial energy consumption is a complex multifaceted result of value-added activities conducted by different types of entrepreneurs and the quality of macroeconomic and entrepreneurial framework conditions, which support or hinder entrepreneurial activity and consequently energy use. After selecting the most appropriate model using a panel Bayesian averaging model approach, a fixed effects panel regression analysis was conducted to investigate more deeply the impact of different types of entrepreneurs on industrial energy consumption. The results show that early stage and established entrepreneurs exhibit different behavioral patterns with respect to energy use. The former follows, although statistically insignificantly, a U-shaped energy use curve. By contrast, the latter follows statistically significantly... [more]

Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Coefficient of Low-Pressure Glow Plasma Treated Water at Atmospheric and Reduced Pressure
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer coefficient, low-pressure glow plasma, natural refrigerant, pool boiling, thermal conductivity, Water
This paper investigates the influence of low-pressure glow plasma water treatment on boiling phenomenon. The presented results show the novel influence and potential new applications of low-pressure glow plasma treated water. Low-pressure glow plasma water treatment affects some of its physical properties such as surface tension, pH, and electric conductivity; this is due to changes in the water structure. An experimental analysis aimed to investigate the effect of such a treatment on the boiling heat transfer coefficient of water, and to assess the stability of GPTW. The experiments were carried out at atmospheric and reduced pressure for heat fluxes up to 70 kW/m2. The analysis shows significant deterioration of the boiling heat transfer coefficient under reduced pressure. In addition, the plasma treatment process had no significant effect on the thermal conductivity of water, as confirmed experimentally. A slight increase was observed, but it was within the measuring error range of... [more]

Stochastic Mixed-Integer Programming (SMIP)-Based Distributed Energy Resource Allocation Method for Virtual Power Plants
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DER allocation, distributed energy resource (DER), energy storage system (ESS), virtual power plant (VPP), VPP portfolio
Virtual power plants (VPPs) have been widely researched to handle the unpredictability and variable nature of renewable energy sources. The distributed energy resources are aggregated to form into a virtual power plant and operate as a single generator from the perspective of a system operator. Power system operators often utilize the incentives to operate virtual power plants in desired ways. To maximize the revenue of virtual power plant operators, including its incentives, an optimal portfolio needs to be identified, because each renewable energy source has a different generation pattern. This study proposes a stochastic mixed-integer programming based distributed energy resource allocation method. The proposed method attempts to maximize the revenue of VPP operators considering market incentives. Furthermore, the uncertainty in the generation pattern of renewable energy sources is considered by the stochastic approach. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed method... [more]

Improving Reliability Indices of the Autonomous Power System of Crete Island Utilizing Extended Photovoltaic Installations
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: capacity credit, island power systems, photovoltaics, probabilistic analysis, reliability
Renewable energy sources (RES) have significantly helped in meeting the electricity demand of Crete, with their share in the energy balance to account for about 25% of the annual electricity production for the past five years. The contribution of photovoltaics (PVs) has been especially significant for the past three years, offering 10% in the peak demand, during summertime. This paper investigates what the capacity credit would be, i.e., up to what extent increasing existing PV capacity by about 20% can be considered as certain, to avoid installing thermal power units. In order to do so, probabilistic techniques have been applied to quantify the load that the installed thermal units in the Cretan power system should be able to meet at any time. In addition, the effect of the additional PV capacity to power system’s reliability is evaluated, introducing a new reliability index and taking into account actual data, regarding the planned and unplanned thermal units’ maintenance. “Paper Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell” Based on Carbon-Nanotube-Composite Papers
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon nanotube, carbon-nanotube-composite paper, dye, dye-sensitized solar cell, flexible device, paper
We propose a paper solar cell based on carbon nanotube (CNT)-composite papers. To fabricate this cell, we use dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) for generating power through the redox reaction of dyes in conjunction with CNT-composite papers, which are composite materials containing CNTs and pulp (raw paper material) that can be fabricated easily by using a method based on the Japanese washi papermaking technique. The demand for CNT applications is expected to increase due to their high conductivity and metallic or semiconducting characteristics. This CNT-composite paper can also have metallic or semiconducting characteristics based on the contained CNTs in the composite paper. We previously fabricated a DSC that generates electricity by using CNT-composite papers stacked in a typical DSC structure. However, the conversion efficiency of this DSC was just 0.188%, which is not practical. To overcome this low power generation issue, we tried improving the DSC structure by applying electrod... Investigating Agglomeration Tendency of Co-Gasification between High Alkali Biomass and Woody Biomass in a Bubbling Fluidized Bed System
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bed agglomeration, co-gasification, EFB, FactSage, fluidized bed, gasification
Palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) is known as problematic biomass due to its high alkali content, i.e., more than half of inorganic matter is potassium (K). EFB when used as a fuel in fluidized beds with silica sand as bed material could form the sticky compound K2O·nSiO2 starting at around 750 °C and adhere bed particles together, resulting in bed agglomeration. Blending EFB with rubber wood sawdust (RWS) could improve the chemical properties and consequent ash composition of the blended fuel. In this study, RWS was blended with EFB at three ratios: RWS:EFB = 25:75, RWS:EFB = 50:50, and RWS:EFB = 75:25. Adding RWS to the fuel prolonged de-fluidization time. The high content of CaO in the RWS ash acted as an inhibitor to prevent the formation of K2O·nSiO2 and, instead, enhanced the formation of K2CO3, a higher melting point compound, which reduced bed agglomeration. During the experiment using RWS:EFB = 75:25, no bed agglomeration was found.

Valorization of Bio-Briquette Fuel by Using Spent Coffee Ground as an External Additive
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: calorific value, Coffea spp., mechanical durability, solid biofuel, waste biomass, waste management
The present study investigates the quality changes of wood bio-briquette fuel after the addition of spent coffee ground (SCG) into the initial feedstock materials (sawdust, shavings) in different mass ratios (1:1, 1:3). Analysis of SCGs fuel parameter proved great potential for energy generation by a process of direct combustion. Namely, level of calorific value (GCV = 21.58 MJ∙kg−1), of ash content (Ac = 1.49%) and elementary composition (C = 55.49%, H = 7.07%, N = 2.38%, O = 33.41%) supports such statement. A comparison with results of initial feedstock materials exhibited better results of SCG in case of its calorific value and elementary composition. Bulk density ρ (kg·m−3) and mechanical durability DU (%) of bio-briquette samples from initial feedstock materials were following for sawdust: ρ = 1026.39 kg·m−3, DU = 98.44% and shavings: ρ = 1036.53 kg·m−3, DU = 96.70%. The level of such mechanical quality indicators changed after the addition of SCG. Specifically, SCG+sawdust mixtur... [more]

Cryogenic Cavitation Mitigation in a Liquid Turbine Expander of an Air-Separation Unit through Collaborative Fine-Tuned Optimization of Impeller and Fairing Cone Geometries
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air separation unit, cavitation, cryogenic liquid turbine expander, design optimization, energy saving
An air-separation unit (ASU) uses atmospheric air to produce essential pure gaseous and liquid products for many industrial sectors but requires intensive power consumption. In recent years, cryogenic liquid turbine expanders have been used to replace the traditional J-T valves in air-separation units to save energy. In this paper, an effective design optimization method is proposed to suppress swirling flow and mitigate cavitation in liquid turbines. A flexible tuning of the impeller and fairing cone geometries is simultaneously realized, where the optimization variables are identified via a geometric sensitivity study. A novel objective function is deliberately established by allowing both swirling flow and cavitation characteristics, driving the optimizer to search for deswirling and cavitation-resistant geometries. A kriging surrogate model with an adaptive sampling strategy and a cooperative co-evolution algorithm (CCEA) are incorporated to solve the highly nonlinear optimization... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: demand response, domestic hot water, energy flexibility, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
This paper describes a system to support the development and assessment of methodologies that explore the energy flexibility provided by electric water heaters. The proposed system follows a modular approach and allows users to share and remotely control the referred devices. The operation of this system is presented in this paper considering a case study where the energy flexibility provided by a 100 L electric water heater is used to reduce electricity costs under the Portuguese tariff context. The collected results reveal that increasing the available energy flexibility leads to larger savings. These results also show that the referred savings depend on the instant associated to hot water consumption events.

Novel Adsorption Cycle for High-Efficiency Adsorption Heat Pumps and Chillers: Modeling and Simulation Results
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorption cycle, adsorption system, heat recovery, Modelling, Simulation, stratified thermal storage, thermodynamic cycle
A novel thermodynamic cycle for adsorption heat pumps and chillers is presented. It shows a significant improvement of the internal heat recovery between the adsorption and the desorption half cycle. A stratified thermal storage, which allows for a temperature-based extraction and insertion of storage fluid, is hydraulically coupled with a single adsorber. The benefit is an increased efficiency by reusing the released heat of adsorption for regeneration of the adsorber and by rendering possible low driving temperature differences. For investigating the second law of this cycle, a dynamic model is employed. The transient behavior of the system and the respective losses because of driving temperature differences at the heat exchangers and losses due to mixing within the storage and to the surroundings are depicted in this one-dimensional model. The model is suitable both for analyzing this advanced cycle as well as for comparisons with other cycles.

SOC Estimation of Lead Carbon Batteries Based on the Operating Conditions of an Energy Storage System in a Microgrid System
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: composite algorithm, energy storage system (ESS), microgrid system, state of charge (SOC), wavelet transform
The environment for practical applications of an energy storage system (ESS) in a microgrid system is very harsh, and therefore actual operating conditions become complex and changeable. In addition, the signal of the ESS sampling process contains a great deal of system and measurement noise, the sampled current fluctuates significantly, and also has high frequency. In this case, under such conditions, it is difficult to accurately estimate the state of charge (SOC) of the batteries in the ESS by common estimation methods. Therefore, this study proposes a compound SOC estimation method based on wavelet transform. This algorithm is very suitable for microgrid systems with large current, frequent fluctuating conditions, and high noise interference. The experimental results and engineering data show that the relative error of the method is 0.5%, which is much lower than the extend Kalman filter (EKF) based on wavelet transform.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 mixture transcritical power cycle (CMTPC), dynamic performance, sensitivity analysis, waste heat recovery
Carbon dioxide transcritical power cycle (CTPC) is suitable for engine waste heat recovery owing to its advantages, such as compact construction and high decomposition temperature. In addition, the addition of refrigerant can further improve the performance of pure carbon dioxide (CO2). Because there are limited studies considering the dynamic performance of CTPC systems with CO2 mixture as the working fluid (CMTPC), let alone the dynamic performance comparison of different structures of the CMTPC system, the object of the current work was to compare the dynamic performance, including the off-design performance and dynamic response speed, of four kinds of CMTPC systems, as well as their sensitivity to system input parameters. The dynamic models of four CMTPC systems were established and validated against experimental data, which includes basic CMTPC (B-CMTPC), CMTPC with a preheater (P-CMTPC), CMTPC with a recuperator (R-CMTPC), and CMTPC with both a recuperator and preheater (PR-CMTPC... Explosion of Microbubbles Generated by the Alternating Polarity Water Electrolysis
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, electrolysis, microbubbles, microsystems, nanobubbles, sound
Water electrolysis with a fast change of polarity generates a high concentration of bulk nanobubbles containing H 2 and O 2 gases. When this concentration reaches a critical value, a microbubble pops up, which is terminated quickly in an explosion process. In this paper, we provide experimental information on the phenomenon concentrating on the dynamics of exploding microbubble observed from the top and from the side. An initial bubble with a size of 150 μ m expands to a maximum size of 1200 μ m for 150 μ s and then shrinks in the cavitation process. The sound produced by the event is coming from two sources separated in time: exploding bubble and cavitating bubble. The observed dynamics supports expansion of the bubble with steam but not with H 2 and O 2 mixture. A qualitative model of this puzzling phenomenon proposed earlier is refined. It is demonstrated that the pressure and temperature in the initial bubble can be evaluated... [more]

Energy-Effective Cooperative and Reliable Delivery Routing Protocols for Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, network reliability, routing protocols, U-WSNs
Underwater deployed sensors nodes are energy-constrained. Therefore, energy efficiency becomes crucial in underwater wireless sensor networks (U-WSNs). The adverse channel corrupts the packets and challenges their reliability. To handle these challenges, two routing schemes are introduced in this paper. They are effective energy and reliable delivery (EERD) and cooperative effective energy and reliable delivery (CoEERD). In EERD, the packets follow single-path routing and the best forwarder node is selected using a weight function such that packets are transferred via the reliable paths with low energy usage. Packet transfer via a single route in EERD has, however, compromised reliability as the undersea links bear harshness and unpredictability. Therefore, the CoEERD scheme adds cooperative routing to EERD, in which a relay node is introduced between a source−destination pair. The destination requests the relay when the packets it gets from the source are corrupted beyond a threshold... [more]

This work explores the possibility to adopt in organic Rankine cycle (ORC) plants mixtures of water (acting as solvent) plus an organic compound (acting as solute) as the working fluid. Initially an evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of the mixtures is performed, in order to assess their properties, and to point out the molar fractions which entail a near-azeotropic behaviour. Four species from three different classes of chemical compounds are investigated: 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol and n-butanol for alcohols, where the first is fluorinated, acetonitrile for nitrile class and 2-methylpyrazine as a heterocyclic aromatic compound. Simultaneously, the thermal stability of the pure substances considered as the possible solute for the mixtures is experimentally investigated in order to estimate the temperature applicability range.
