Analysis of the Possibility of Disinfecting Surfaces Using Portable Foggers in the Era of the SARS-CoV-2 Epidemic
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: atomization, COVID-19, droplet size distribution, portable foggers, SARS-CoV-2, Sauter mean diameter
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has resulted in the need for increased surface disinfection. For this purpose, biocides, UV-C radiation, or ozonation can be used. The most commonly used are biocides that can be deposited on the surface with the use of various devices, including foggers. The disinfection efficiency is related to the size of the aerosol droplets formed and their distribution. This paper specifies the distribution of droplet diameters and mean droplet diameters obtained during the use of a commercial fogger. It was shown that the droplet diameters formed were mainly in the range of up to 30−40 μm. A ceramic filter allowed for a larger number of smaller droplets and a limitation in the number of droplets with larger diameters. The results are important in the context of fighting the virus in hard-to-reach places where battery devices can be used.

Cleaning of Floating Photovoltaic Systems: A Critical Review on Approaches from Technical and Economic Perspectives
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dust accumulation, Floating Photovoltaic (FPV) cleaning techniques, Floating Photovoltaic (FPV) systems, soiling, water-based cleaning approaches, water-free cleaning approaches
There are some environmental factors, such as ambient temperature, dust, etc., which cause a reduction in the efficiency of Photovoltaic (PV) systems. Installation of PV panels on the water surface, commonly known as Floating Photovoltaic (FPV) systems, is one solution to employ PV panels in a cooler environment, achieve higher efficiency, and reduce water evaporation. FPV systems open up new opportunities for scaling up solar generating capacity, especially in countries with high population density and valuable lands, as well as countries with high evaporation rates and water resources deficiency. Since the FPV system is an almost new concept, its cleaning techniques have not been comprehensively studied. While FPV systems are located on the surface of water resources and reservoirs, the water quality can limit the application of different cleaning techniques. Therefore, this paper investigates different techniques of FPV systems cleaning and categorizes them into water-based and wate... [more]

Hamiltonian Modeling and Structure Modified Control of Diesel Engine
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: damping, diesel generator sets, generalized Hamiltonian, Lagrangian equation, Modelling, modified control, structure
A diesel engine is a typical dynamic system. In this paper, a dynamics method is proposed to establish the Hamiltonian model of the diesel engine, which solves the main difficulty of constructing a Hamiltonian function under the multi-field coupling condition. Furthermore, the control method of Hamiltonian model structure modification is introduced to study the control of a diesel engine. By means of the principle of energy-shaping and Hamiltonian model structure modification theories, the modified energy function is constructed, which is proved to be a quasi-Lyapunov function of the closed-loop system. Finally, the control laws are derived, and the simulations are carried out. The study reveals the dynamic mechanism of diesel engine operation and control and provides a new way to research the modeling and control of a diesel engine system.

System Parameter Based Performance Optimization of Solar PV Systems with Perturbation Based MPPT Algorithms
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: boost converter, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), perturb and observe algorithm, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar photovoltaic system
Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms are invariably employed to utilize solar photovoltaic (PV) systems effectively. Perturbation based MPPT algorithms are popular due to their simplicity and reasonable efficiency. While novel MPPT algorithms claim increased energy utilization over classic perturbation techniques, their performance is governed by the choice of optimal algorithm parameters. Existing guidelines for parameter optimization are mathematically laborious and are not generic. Hence, this paper aims to provide simple and comprehensive guidelines to ensure optimal performance from the perturbation based MPPT technique. For an illustration of proposed claims, a solar PV fed boost converter is investigated to examine the effect of input capacitor, digital filter cut-off frequency, system time constant and sampling time on implementing a classic Perturb and Observe (P and O) algorithm. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: accelerated aging, combustion characteristics, cone calorimeter FTIR, non-class 1E cable, SEM-EDS
In this study, the combustion characteristics and emission of toxic gases of a non-class 1E cable in a nuclear power plant were investigated with respect to the aging period. A thermal accelerated aging method was applied using the Arrhenius equation with the activation energy of the cables and the aging periods of the cables set to zero, 10, 20, 30 and 40 years old by considering the lifetime of a nuclear power plant. According to ISO 5660-1 and ISO 19702, the cone calorimeter Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy test was performed to analyze the combustion characteristics and emission toxicity. In addition, scanning electron microscopy and an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer were used to examine the change in the surface of the sheath and insulation of the cables according to the aging periods. To compare quantitative fire risks at an early period, the fire performance index (FPI) and fire growth index (FGI) are derived from the test results of the ignition time, peak heat rel... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ambient crosswind, steel-truss natural draft dry cooling system, thermal and flow performance, tower configuration, variable contour
In recent years, the steel-truss natural draft dry cooling technique has received attention owing to its advantages in better aseismic capability, shorter construction period, and preferable recycling. For cooling towers generating the draft force of air flow, its configuration may impact the thermal and flow performance of the steel-truss natural draft dry cooling system. With regard to the issue, this work explored the thermal and flow characteristics for the steel-truss natural draft dry cooling systems with four typical engineering tower configurations. By numerical simulation, the pressure, flow, and temperature contours were analyzed, then air mass flow rates and heat rejections were calculated and compared for the local air-cooled sectors and overall steel-truss natural draft dry cooling systems with those four tower configurations. The results present that tower 2 with the conical/cylindrical configuration had slightly lower heat rejection compared with tower 1 with the traditi... [more]

Thermodynamic Study of Energy Consumption and Carbon Dioxide Emission in Ironmaking Process of the Reduction of Iron Oxides by Carbon
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blast furnace ironmaking process, carbon dioxide output, energy consumption, gasification reaction between carbon and carbon dioxide, Hess’s law, reaction enthalpy, relative gas partial pressure, the reduction of iron oxides by carbon, thermodynamic model
Carbon included in coke and coal was used as a reduction agent and fuel in blast furnace (BF) ironmaking processes, which released large quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2). Minimizing the carbon consumption and CO2 output has always the goal of ironmaking research. In this paper, the reduction reactions of iron oxides by carbon, the gasification reaction of carbon by CO2, and the coupling reactions were studied by thermodynamic functions, which were derived from isobaric specific heat capacity. The reaction enthalpy at 298 K could not represent the heat value at the other reaction temperature, so the certain temperature should be confirmed by Gibbs frees energy and gas partial pressure. Based on Hess’ law, the energy consumption of the ironmaking process by carbon was calculated in detail. The decrease in the reduction temperature of solid metal iron has been beneficial in reducing the sensible heat required. When the volume ratio of CO to CO2 in the top gas of the furnace was given as... [more]

Concrete Support Structures for Offshore Wind Turbines: Current Status, Challenges, and Future Trends
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: concrete structures, foundations, offshore wind, support structures, trends, wind energy
Today’s offshore wind turbine support structures market is largely dominated by steel structures, since steel monopiles account for the vast majority of installations in the last decade and new types of multi-leg steel structures have been developed in recent years. However, as wind turbines become bigger, and potential sites for offshore wind farms are located in ever deeper waters and ever further from the shore, the conditions for the design, transport, and installation of support structures are changing. In light of these facts, this paper identifies and categorizes the challenges and future trends related to the use of concrete for support structures of future offshore wind projects. To do so, recent advances and technologies still under development for both bottom-fixed and floating concrete support structures have been reviewed. It was found that these new developments meet the challenges associated with the use of concrete support structures, as they will allow the production c... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: activated sludge system (AS), clean energy production, EU Green Deal, high-rate algal ponds (HRAP), Horizon 2030, photovoltaic power (PV)
The European Union Green Deal aims at curbing greenhouse gas emissions and introducing clean energy production. But to achieve energy efficiency, the opportunity cost of different energies must be assessed. In this article, two different energy self-sufficient systems for wastewater treatment are compared. On the one hand, high-rate algal ponds system (HRAP) is considered; on the other hand, a conventional activated sludge system (AS) which uses photovoltaic power (PV) is studied. The paper offers a viability analysis of both systems based on the capacity to satisfy their energetic consumption. This viability analysis, along with the opportunity cost study, will be used in the article to compare these two projects devoted to the treatment of wastewater. In order to assess viability, the probability of not achieving the energy consumption threshold at least one day is studied. The results point that the AS+PV system self-sufficiency is achieved with much lesser land requirements than th... [more]

Regional Pole Placers of Power Systems under Random Failures/Repair Markov Jumps
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: markov reliability model, power system reliability, power system stabilizer, robust pole placement, robust stochastic stability
This paper deals with a discrete-time stochastic control model design for random failure prone and maintenance in a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system. This model includes the practical values of failure/repair rate of transmission lines and transformers. The probability matrix is, therefore, calculated accordingly. The model considers two extreme modes of operations: the most reliable mode and the least reliable contingency case. This allows the control design which stochastically stabilizes the system under jump Markov disturbances. For adequate transient response, the proposed state feedback power system stabilizer (PSS) achieves a desired settling time and damping ratio by placing the closed-loop poles in a desired region. The control target should also be satisfied for load variations in either mode of operation. A sufficient condition is developed to achieve the control objectives via solving a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMI). Using simulation, the performance of t... [more]

A Sizing Method for PV−Battery−Generator Systems for Off-Grid Applications Based on the LCOE
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, diesel generator, distributed energy resources, electrical energy storage, levelized cost of electricity, off-grid power systems, photovoltaics, renewable energy sources, sizing method
Electricity supply in nonelectrified areas can be covered by distributed renewable energy systems. The main disadvantage of these systems is the intermittent and often unpredictable nature of renewable energy sources. Moreover, the temporal distribution of renewable energy may not match that of energy demand. Systems that combine photovoltaic modules with electrical energy storage (EES) can eliminate the above disadvantages. However, the adoption of such solutions is often financially prohibitive. Therefore, all parameters that lead to a functionally reliable and self-sufficient power generation system should be carefully considered during the design phase of such systems. This study proposes a sizing method for off-grid electrification systems consisting of photovoltaics (PV), batteries, and a diesel generator set. The method is based on the optimal number of PV panels and battery energy capacity whilst minimizing the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for a period of 25 years. Vali... [more]

An Intensification of Biomass and Waste Char Gasification in a Gasifier
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, energy recovery, gasification, gasification rate, remaining char, sewage sludge, syngas enhancement, waste tire
Gasification is considered a clean and effective way to convert low quality biomass to higher value gas and solve various waste utilization problems as well. However, only 80% of biomass is converted through thermal processes. The remaining part is char, which requires more time for conversion and in that case reduces the efficiency of gasifier. Seeking to optimize the process of gasification, this work focuses on the intensification of residual char gasification in a gasifier. For this purpose, three different types of char prepared from wood, sewage sludge and tire were examined under different conditions in a lab-scale gasification setup. Results showed that the air flux increase from 0.11 kg/(m2s) to 0.32 kg/(m2s) intensified the gasification process and the gasification rate increased from 0.8 to 2.61 g/min with the decrease of duration of wood char gasification by 72%. An additional introduction of pyrolysis gas into the char gasifier led to decreased bed temperatures, but the ga... [more]

Estimating the Thermal Properties of the Cover and the Floor in a Plastic Greenhouse
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: area–weighted average, heat flux, heat load, plastic greenhouse, total heat transfer coefficient
This study comprehensively analyzed the heat loss and total heat transfer coefficient (U-value) of a single-span experimental plastic greenhouse covered with a double layer of 0.1 mm thick polyethylene. The air temperature and heat flux (W m−2) of the greenhouse components were measured from 18:00 to 06:00, and the energy balance equations under steady-state conditions were determined. The heat flux and U-value of the roof, sides, front and rear, and floor of the greenhouse were determined and compared. The results showed that these values for the roof play an important role in determining the heat load in the greenhouse, and that the average heat transfer through the floor is very small. The average U-value of the greenhouse cover is a comprehensive value which takes the U-values of the roof, sides, and front and rear into account through the use of an area−weighted average method. Finally, an average U-value of 3.69 W m−2 °C −1 was obtained through the analysis of the variations in t... [more]

A Two-Step State Estimation Algorithm for Hybrid AC-DC Distribution Grids
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: AC-DC grids, grid monitoring, Multi-Terminal DC grids, state estimation, voltage source converters
Direct Current (DC) grids are considered an attractive option for integrating high shares of renewable energy sources in the electrical distribution grid. Hence, in the future, Alternating Current (AC) and DC systems could be interconnected to form hybrid AC-DC distribution grids. This paper presents a two-step state estimation formulation for the monitoring of hybrid AC-DC grids. In the first step, state estimation is executed independently for the AC and DC areas of the distribution system. The second step refines the estimation results by exchanging boundary quantities at the AC-DC converters. To this purpose, the modulation index and phase angle control of the AC-DC converters are integrated into the second step of the proposed state estimation formulation. This allows providing additional inputs to the state estimation algorithm, which eventually leads to improve the accuracy of the state estimation results. Simulations on a sample AC-DC distribution grid are performed to highligh... [more]

Zeolite NaY-Copper Composites Produced by Sintering Processes for Adsorption Heat Transformation—Technology, Structure and Performance
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorption heat pump, composites, sintering, zeolite
In adsorption heat pumps, the adsorbent is typically combined with heat conducting structures in order to ensure high power output. A new approach for the direct integration of zeolite granules into a copper structure made of short copper fibers is presented here. Zeolite NaY granules with two different grain sizes are coated with copper fibers and powder and sintered to larger structures. The sorption dynamics of these structures were measured and evaluated in terms of heat and mass transfer resistances and compared to the loose grain configuration of the same material. We found that the thermal conductivity of such a composite structure is approximately 10 times higher than the thermal conductivity of an adsorbent bed with NaY granules. Sorption equilibrium measurements with a volumetric method indicate that the maximum uptake is not altered by the manufacturing process. Furthermore, the impact of the adsorbent−metal structure on the total thermal mass of an adsorption heat exchanger... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: direct injection of natural gas, high-pressure direct injection (HPDI), partially premixed compression ignition (PPCI), particulate emissions, pilot-ignited natural gas diesel engine (PINGD)
Natural gas (NG) engines have very broad application prospects. The pilot-ignited NG diesel engine can be organized into two combustion modes according to the sequence of oil and gas injection: (1) High-pressure direct injection, where NG is mainly diffused combustion; and (2) partially premixed compression ignition, where NG is mainly premixed combustion. In this study, we used CONVERGE to explore the influence of the NG injection timing on the distribution of the mixture equivalence ratio, ignition characteristics, thermal efficiency, emission, and combustion reaction rate under the two combustion modes. We also used a multi-step soot model to analyze the particle mass and quantity. We showed herein that the NG injection timing significantly affects the mixture distribution in the cylinder, thereby consequently affecting the combustion process. Both very early and very late injection times were not conducive to NG combustion. In addition, the mass, quantity, and diameter of the soot... [more]
