Subject: Process Control
Keywords: argillaceous limestone, controlling factors, Eastern Sichuan, eyelid-shaped structure, tight reservoir
Tight marl is a special type of unconventional oil and gas resource, and the study on its reservoir characteristics and controlling factors is of immense scientific significance. In this paper, 113 core samples of marl from Gouxi Area, Eastern Sichuan were selected. Based on organic carbon, pyrolysis, X-ray diffraction of whole rock, and X-ray diffraction of clay analysis, the reservoir evaluation of eyelid-shaped limestone in the first member of Maokou Formation was carried out. The results show that there are obvious differences between eyelid-shaped limestone reservoirs and eyeball-shaped limestone reservoirs in the target stratum. Eyelid-shaped limestone is mainly distributed in the lower members a and c of the first member of Maokou Formation. It could be the main reservoir of low porosity and permeability tight marl, as its developed apertures, micro-fractures, and pore throat structure are obviously better than that of the eyeball-shaped limestone. As eyelid-shaped limestone fea... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cointegration, condition monitoring, Fault Detection, SCADA data, wind turbine
Cointegration theory has been recently proposed for condition monitoring and fault detection of wind turbines. However, the existing cointegration-based methods and results presented in the literature are limited and not encouraging enough for the broader deployment of the technique. To close this research gap, this paper presents a new investigation on cointegration for wind turbine monitoring using a four-year SCADA data set acquired from a commercial wind turbine. A gearbox fault is used as a testing case to validate the analysis. A cointegration-based wind turbine monitoring model is established using five process parameters, including the wind speed, generator speed, generator temperature, gearbox temperature, and generated power. Two different sets of SCADA data were used to train the cointegration-based model and calculate the normalized cointegrating vectors. The first training data set involves 12,000 samples recorded before the occurrence of the gearbox fault, whereas the sec... [more]

Control of Cuk-Based Microinverter Topology with Energy Storage for Residential PV Applications
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Cuk converter, grid-connected systems, photovoltaic (PV), power electronic converter, switched mode power supply (SPMS)
This paper proposes a modular inverter based on Cuk converters for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to mitigate the voltage and current mismatch issue at the PV module level. The proposed modular Cuk inverter (MCI) is formed by connecting several low-voltage (LV) microinverters (MIs) in series and linking their output sides to the distribution network. This architecture does not require a central inverter, and hence, it eliminates the need for large dc-link intermediate capacitors. The proposed MCI provides more controllability over the PV system by having a decentralized structure. The MCI will improve the PV system efficiency by reducing the voltage and current stresses in the MIs and will enable better voltage regulation due to the provided controllability. Since the proposed MI topology is based on the Cuk converter, it offers continuous input and output currents that will reduce the required filtering capacitance and will provide a wide range of voltage regulation for either supply... March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active balance charging, balance control strategy, buck-boost converter, cascade balance topology structure, Model Predictive Control
As a bi-directional converter, the Buck-Boost converter, which has the advantages of simple structure and taking the SOC of the battery as the balance variable, is adopted as the balance topology in this paper. In view of the shortcomings of traditional balance topology, which can only balance two adjacent batteries, resulting in a long balance time and insufficient balance accuracy, a cascade active balance charging topology that can balance in intra-group and inter-group situations simultaneously is proposed. At the same time, the fuzzy control algorithm and model predictive control are used as the balance control strategies, respectively, to control whether the MOSFET is on or off in the balance topology circuit. The duty cycle is dynamically adjusted to the size of the balance current to achieve the balance of the battery pack. The results show that the cascade Buck-Boost balance topology based on model prediction control can accurately control the balancing current and improve the... [more]

Particle swarm optimisation (PSO) is one of the widely adopted meta-heuristic methods for solving real-life problems. Its practical utility can be further enhanced by improving its performance. In order to acheive this, academics have presented several variants of the original PSO over the past few years, including the quantum PSO (QPSO), bare-bones PSO (BB-PSO), hybrid PSO, fuzzy PSO, etc. In this paper, the performance of PSO is improved by proposing a fragmented swarm optimisation approach known as the PSO. The PSO is tested and compared with PSOs over 14 different benchmarking cost functions to validate its efficacy. The analysis is also carried out to see the impact of α on its performance. It is observed that the average value of the cost function over 50 simulations obtained using the fragmented swarm approach is lower than that obtained using the standard PSO in 12 out of 14 benchmark functions. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: evaluation of power generation, wake decay constant, wake flow, WAsP, wind farm in coastal waters
Power generation estimation is one of the key steps in wind farm micro-sitting, and its accuracy is related to the wake decay constant in the wake model. Considering the influence of wind resource distribution in different regions, this study carried out interval optimization for the wake decay constant of offshore wind farms in the Yellow Sea region of China. Given the very small length of the sea surface roughness, atmospheric stability is a critical factor influencing the wake extent and recovery speed of offshore wind farms. WAsP 10 (Wind Atlas Analysis and Application software) simulates the wake of various scenarios, and the selection range of wake attenuation constant is investigated by combining the cases of two offshore wind farms in the Yellow Sea region. The study found that the higher the atmospheric stability, the larger the wake and the lower the wake attenuation coefficient. Design of a Dynamic Hybrid Compensator for Current Sharing Control of Parallel Phase-Shifted Full-Bridge Converter
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current sharing control, dynamic hybrid compensator, parallel PSFB
The phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converter has been widely used in power supply modules due to its simple control and high output power. However, with the market’s increasing demand for higher power sources, the PSFB converter needs to face challenges in increasing its output power level. Compared to redesigning a larger power module or a larger single converter, it will be more cost-effective to achieve a higher power output by paralleling the existing converters. However, due to the manufacturing differences in circuit components, the output imbalance in parallel PSFB converter systems may damage the power modules. Thus, the influence of differences in circuit components is analyzed in this paper, and it is found that the leakage inductance and transformer ratio are the main factors resulting in errors in current sharing control. Consequently, a dynamic hybrid compensator (DHC) is proposed in this paper, that can significantly reduce the error in current sharing control via the c... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cross-boundary supporting, deep roadway, discontinuous deformation, linkage control, thick anchorage layer
After deep mining, the discontinuous deformation characteristics of roadway roofs become more and more obvious, resulting in the emergence of separation fractures in the rock mass, which seriously affects the stability of the roof rock mass. By taking the air return roadway 21204 (ARR 21204) in Hulusu Coal Mine as the engineering background, this article reveals the discontinuous deformation characteristics of deep buried roadway roofs through field research, numerical simulation, theoretical analysis and engineering practice. After roadway excavation, the rock masses in different shallow roof horizons show different degrees of stress unloading, resulting in the occurrence of discontinuous deformation phenomena in rock masses. With the rise of the roof rock horizon, the degree of discontinuous deformation fades away until a continuous deformation zone with small deformation and stable rock strata appears. In addition, with the increase in the roadway buried depth, the extent of the dis... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current control, deep Q-network, deep reinforcement learning, matrix converter
This paper presents the first approach to a current control problem for the direct matrix converter (DMC), which makes use of the deep reinforcement learning algorithm. The main objective of this paper is to solve the real-time capability issues of traditional control schemes (e.g., finite-set model predictive control) while maintaining feasible control performance. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: CasADi, model predictive control (MPC), non-linear MPC (NLMPC), PID, quadrotor, Simulink
In this paper, we present the development of a non-linear model predictive controller for the trajectory tracking of a quadrotor using the CasADi optimization framework. The non-linear dynamic model of the quadrotor was derived using Newton−Euler equations, and the control algorithm and drone dynamics were wrapped in Matlab. The proposed controller was tested by simulating the tracking of a 3D helical reference trajectory, and its efficiency was evaluated in terms of numerical performance and tracking accuracy. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: domestic energy saving, electric water heater, optimal control, understanding, water heater temperature control
The operation of water heating uses a substantial amount of energy and is responsible for 30% of a household’s overall electricity consumption. Determining methods of reducing energy demand is crucial for countries such as South Africa, where energy supply is almost exclusively electrical, 88% of it is generated by coal, and energy deficits cause frequent blackouts. Decreasing the energy consumption of tanked water heaters can be achieved by reducing the standing losses and thermal energy of the hot water used. In this paper, we evaluate various energy-saving strategies that have commonly been used and determine which strategy is best. These strategies include optimising the heating schedule, lowering the set-point temperature, reducing the volume of hot water used, and installing additional thermal insulation. The results show that the best strategy was providing optimal control of the heating element, and savings of 16.3% were achieved. This study also determined that the magnitude o... [more]

A Hierarchical Control Approach for Power Loss Minimization and Optimal Power Flow within a Meshed DC Microgrid
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: B-splines, DC microgrid architecture, differential flatness, load balancing, meshed topology, Model Predictive Control, power dissipation
This work considers the DC part of a hybrid AC/DC microgrid with a meshed topology. We address cost minimization, battery scheduling and the power loss minimization within the power distribution network through constrained optimization. The novelty comes from applying differential flatness properties to the microgrid components and formulating the cost and constraints in terms of the associated B-splines parametrization of the flat outputs (the voltages and currents of the system). This allows us to obtain optimal power profiles to minimize the power dissipation and the cost of the electricity purchase from the external grid. These profiles are tracked by a model predictive controller at the higher level, while at a a lower level a controller deals with the operation of the switches within the DC/DC converters. Extensive simulations under nominal and fault-affected scenarios using realistic data validate the proposed approach.
