March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AVR, fractional adaptive controller, fuzzy, PID, PIDA
Voltage regulation is a crucial task for electrical grids in the presence of high penetration levels of renewable energies. The regulation of generator excitation improves the stability of the power system. An essential tool for controlling the excitation of generators is the automatic voltage regulator (AVR). It is advised to use a controller to increase the reliability of an AVR. A survey about different types of controllers is proposed in this paper. Then, a novel optimized PID-Based model reference fractional adaptive controller is proposed, with detailed mathematical modeling. The novel controller was compared to the controllers in the survey. The novel proposed controller proved its superiority over the other controllers through its fast response and low rising and settling times. Moreover, the proposed controller smoothly and instantaneously tracked dynamic reference changes.

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC voltage generator, direct torque control, doubly fed induction machine, stand-alone generator
The doubly fed induction machine (DFIM)-based DC voltage generator is equipped with a stator-connected diode rectifier. The six-pulse diode rectifier as a nonlinear circuit introduces harmonics in the stator and rotor current and distorts the machine stator voltage, as well as the stator flux. This causes electromagnetic torque oscillations and instantaneous power components oscillations. The torque oscillations adversely impact the mechanical parts of the drive-train and oscillations of the p component of instantaneous power influence DC-bus voltage oscillations. The oscillations can be somewhat cancelled by control methods. However, cancellation of electromagnetic torque is not strictly coupled with cancellation of oscillations of the p component of instantaneous power. The paper presents an analysis of influence of the control methods aimed at a reduction of torque oscillations on the output voltage oscillations level in the stand-alone DFIM-based DC voltage generator. Keywords: Liushagang Formation, northern steep-slope, reservoir diversity, Weixinan Sag
Seismic, core, drilling, logging, and thin-section data are considered to analyze the reservoir diversity in the east, middle, and west fan of the Liushagang Formation in the steep-slope zone of the Weixinan Sag, Beibuwan Basin. Three factors primarily affect the reservoir differences for steep-slope systems: (1) Sedimentary factors mostly control reservoir scales and characteristics and the drainage system and microfacies. Massive high-quality reservoirs have shallow burial depths. Channel development and sediment supply favor the formation of these reservoirs. The sedimentary microfacies suggest fan delta plain distributary channels. (2) Lithofacies factors primarily control reservoir types and evolution. The diagenesis of high-quality reservoirs is weak, and a weak compaction−cementation diagenetic facies and medium compaction−dissolution diagenetic facies were developed. (3) Sandstone thickness factors primarily control the oil-bearing properties of reservoirs. The average porosity... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hysteresis-based control, limited switching frequency, total harmonic distortion, voltage mode control, voltage source inverter
This paper proposes a new control strategy for single-phase voltage source inverters that does not rely on switching based on Pulse Width Modulation. The technique is similar to conventional current hysteresis control, but instead of the output current, the low-pass-filtered inverter output voltage is utilised as the feedback signal. Nevertheless, the switching instants are not determined by a predefined band, but rather by a low-cost Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD)-based control logic, which ensures a nearly constant switching frequency. Similar to hysteresis-based control methods, the proposed method ensures a rapid dynamic response. Notable characteristics of the proposed method include a quick dynamic response, a well-defined harmonic spectrum, and an improved total harmonic distortion (THD), particularly during load current and source voltage changes. The proposed method is implemented on a 1 kW, 230 V, 50 Hz prototype. Simulation and experimental results are presented to... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: regulated power supply, single-phase H-bridge converter, sliding mode predictive current control, state observer, steady-state error
As the important technology of renewable energy systems, power electronics technology is directly bound up with the prospect and development of renewable energy technology. As the output end of renewable energy systems, a single-phase H-bridge converter needs to stabilize the output current. When predictive current control (PCC) tracks the reference current, the dynamic response is the fastest, but the control delay and the changes in model parameters will cause the output current steady-state error. The sliding mode predictive current control (SMPCC) algorithm is proposed to control the output current better. The proposed SMPCC scheme uses the combination of traditional PCC and variable structure scheme, and it establishes the mathematical model according to the state equation of the converter. Taking the exponential reaching law as control law, the expression of the variable structure controller is obtained. The MATLAB experimental and simulation results show that SMPCC can not only... Keywords: dynamic performance, fluctuant industrial waste heat, Organic Rankine cycle, superheat degree
Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is widely used to recover low-grade waste heat. The effects of heat-source temperature amplitude and period on ORC systems are discussed based on operating parameters and power-generation performance. The maximum allowable heat-source temperature amplitude under different superheat and average heat-source temperature was discussed. The results showed that the amplitudes of power-generation and operating parameters were proportional to the amplitude. The operating parameters of the system had a certain response time and were proportional to the period. The performance of ORC deteriorated at any amplitude or period. The superheat degree was not conducive to the power-generation performance, but could effectively avoid the working fluid is wet vapor into the expander. This conclusion can be applied to any ORC system driven by a single organic working fluid, which provides theoretical support for the design of control systems and power-generation device.

Keywords: active filter, FIR filter, repetitive controllers, stability
Repetitive controllers (RCs) are linear control structures based on the internal model principle. This control strategy is known for its ability to control periodic reference signals, even if these signals have many harmonic components. Despite being a solution that results in a good performance, several parameters of the repetitive controller need to be correctly tuned to guarantee its stability. Among these parameters, one that has high impact on the system performance and stability is the finite impulse response (FIR) filter, which is usually used to increase the stability domain of RC-based controllers. In this context, this paper presents a complete tutorial for designing the zero-phase FIR filter, which is often used to stabilize control systems that use RC-based controllers. In addition, this paper presents a Matlab® application developed for performing the stability analysis of RC systems and designing its FIR filter. Keywords: coalbed methane, gas content, geological control factors, Ordos Basin, Weibei Field
The distribution of gas contents in the No.5 coal seams of the Weibei Field of southeastern Ordos Basin, North China, is highly variable and its mechanism remains unclear. In this study, systematic evaluation of the gas content and its geological control factors are conducted based on the field investigation together with 16 coalbed methane (CBM) wells in the Weibei Field, southeastern Ordos Basin, North China. The gas content variability is determined from the perspectives of gas generation, migration, and preservation. The results indicate that the gas generation is largely relevant with the subsidence and fluctuation of the coal seam during the middle-late Yanshanian orogeny, which controls the gas content variability of the Weibei Field. Besides, gas migration and preservation determine the gas content on a regional scale, significantly related to fault types, roof lithology, burial depth, and hydrodynamic conditions, but scarcely affected by the roof thickness. In the Weibei Field... [more]

Keywords: deadbeat control, direct control, finite control set model predictive control, harmonic distortion, series active power filter
Aiming at the delay caused by the phase-locked loop (PLL) and harmonic detection in the traditional control of a series active power filter (SAPF), a deadbeat direct control (DBDC)-based finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) strategy for the SAPF is proposed in this work. Firstly, a reference voltage generation mechanism based on direct control is established, which avoids the delay in harmonic detection, thus improving the dynamic response performance of the system. Secondly, the reference current generation mechanism suitable for the SAPF is derived and established using the deadbeat control (DBC) in the αβ coordinate system, based on which the FCS-MPC system is constructed. It eliminates the complex coordinate transformation and PLL and effectively compensates for the full-frequency harmonic voltage. Finally, the proposed control strategy is verified by a simulation and an experiment. The results suggest that the proposed control strategy can effectively compensate f... [more]

Keywords: hypersonic vehicle, path following, thrust vectoring, X-15
Thrust vector control (TVC) might be used to control aircraft at large altitudes and in post-stall conditions when aerodynamic control surfaces are ineffective. This study demonstrated that the implementation of the TVC on high-speed aircraft is a reasonable solution and might be an alternative when compared to the complicated reaction control system or large aerodynamic control surfaces. The numerical flight dynamics model of the X-15 experimental aircraft was developed and implemented in MATLAB/Simulink and then used to investigate the proposed solution. The obtained results indicate that the aircraft, equipped with full 3D thrust vectoring and two independent horizontal stabilizers to control the roll angle, was able to achieve flight along the path that was defined by a set of waypoints. This paper also highlights the potential benefits and challenges of using TVC as a control method for aircraft. The results of this study contribute to the growing body of research on aircraft cont... [more]

Keywords: condensation, electric motor, insulation, thermal management, thermoelectric device
Electrical insulation failure is the most common failure mechanism in electrical machines (motors and generators). High temperatures and/or temperature gradients (HTTG) are the main drivers of insulation failure in electrical machines. HTTG combine with and augment other destructive effects from over-voltage, to voltage transients, overload and load variations, poor construction techniques, and thermal cycling. These operating conditions cause insulation damage that leads to electrical insulation failure. The insulation failure process is greatly accelerated by pollutants and moisture absorption. A simple and robust way to reduce HTTG and moisture adsorption is by maintaining constant internal temperatures. The current method to maintain elevated internal temperatures and reduce condensation issues is by internal electrical heating elements. This paper examines the effectiveness of applying thermoelectric coolers (TECs), solid-state heat pumps (Peltier devices), as heaters to raise a m... [more]

Keywords: diversity, equilibrium point, Jerk system, multi-scroll, multi-stability
A multi-scroll attractor reflects the structural diversity of the dynamic system, and multi-stability behavior reflects its state diversity. Multi-scroll and multi-stability chaotic systems can produce complex random sequences, which have important application values in the field of data security. However, current works on multi-scroll−multi-steady behavior have been carried out separately, rather than simultaneously. This paper considers a three-dimensional Jerk system with a sinusoidal nonlinear term. The basic dynamic behaviors, such as the stability of equilibrium points, bifurcation of parameters and initial values, phase diagrams, and basins of attraction, were analyzed. It was found that the system has infinite equilibrium points. Moreover, the system not only generates complex dynamics, such as single-scroll, double-scroll, and multi-scroll but also realizes the self-reproduction of these dynamic characteristics by controlling the initial value of the system. Therefore, by expa... [more]

Keywords: Fault Detection, protection, stator faults, synchronous generator, three-level converter, turn faults, variable speed, voltage-source converters
Faults between stator winding turns of synchronous generators have led to specific changes in the harmonic content of currents. In this paper, these changes are used to detect faults in variable-speed synchronous generators connected to three-level converters during their operation. Currents typically measured for control purposes are used to avoid installation of additional sensors. The neutral point current of the three-level converter is also evaluated under faults in the generator. Encoder-tuned dynamic filters based on Park transformation and Fourier coefficients together with low-pass filters are used to detect the selected harmonics under variable speeds. The geometric loci of these components are proposed as a method to distinguish between healthy and faulty conditions. Simulation and experimental data are used to test sensitivity, selectivity and detection time of the proposed technique for different fault types. Generalization for a different generator is also presented and t... [more]

The urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to achieve a decarbonized society has led to the active introduction of electric vehicles worldwide. Renewable energy sources that do not emit greenhouse gases during charging must also be used. However, the uncertainty in the supply of renewable energy is an issue that needs to be considered in practical applications. Therefore, in this study, we predicted the amount of electricity generated by renewable energy using model predictive control, and we considered the operation of a complete island-operated park and ride EV parking station that does not depend on commercial electricity. To perform appropriate model predictive control, we performed comparative simulations for several different forecast interval cases. Based on the obtained results, we determined the forecast horizon and we simulated the economic impact of implementing EV demand response on the electricity demand side. We found that without demand response, large amounts of... [more]

Budgets in organisational units are considered to be traditional management support tools. On the other hand, budgetary control is the essence of control measures, allowing for the increase in the efficiency of an enterprise through appropriate allocation of resources. The methodology used in the analysis of budget variances (obtained as a result of applying budgetary control) undoubtedly influences the management efficiency of almost every organizational unit. The authors indicate a research gap of methodological and application nature in the area of risk measurement in the analysis of budget variances. Therefore, the aim of the article is to create universal and flexible models enabling probabilistic quantification of the risk of budget variance regardless of the nature of the cost, the person budgeting and the budgeting unit. Extreme value theory was used to develop the model. The results of the work are models allowing for the estimation of the limit level of deviation for assumed... [more]

Keywords: ancillary service market, distributed energy resources, negative prices, price trend, retention of incentives
In an effort to push for low-carbon transition, national governments and regulatory authorities are working to define market structures and legislative frameworks able to effectively support the spreading of electricity production from renewables. To this purpose, the opening of national Ancillary Services Markets (ASMs) to Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) plays a key role. However, pricing schemes and rules in place (e.g., incentives) can act as a barrier to the supply of regulation services by small-sized and renewable-based power plants. In this context, the present work evaluates the economic opportunities for DERs provided by the provision of tertiary reserve and balancing control in the Italian ASM. The research is carried out through the collection and processing of price data from the Italian electricity and gas markets over 4 years (2019−2022). Considering a reference architecture where DER units bid on the market through a Balancing Service Provider, the potential revenues... [more]

Keywords: prepack sand retention test, sand control, sand production, sanding, wire-wrapped screens
There are many technologies to implement sand control in sand-prone wells, drilled in either weakly or nonconsolidated sandstones. Technologies that are used to prevent sanding can be divided into the following groups: screens (wire-wrapped screens, slotted liners, premium screens, and mesh screens), gravel packs, chemical consolidation, and technological ways (oriented perforation and bottomhole pressure limitation) of sanding prevention. Each particular technology in these groups has their own design and construction features. Today, slotted liners are the most well-studied technology in terms of design, however, this type of sand control screen is not always accessible, and some companies tend towards using wire-wrapped screens over slotted liners. This paper aims to study the design criteria of wire-wrapped screens and provides new data regarding the way in which wire design affects the sanding process. Wires with triangular (wedge), trapezoidal, and drop-shaped profiles were teste... [more]
