Modelling, Design and Control of a Standalone Hybrid PV-Wind Micro-Grid System
Ayman Al-Quraan, Muhannad Al-Qaisi
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control strategy, hybrid systems, micro-grid, PV systems, wind energy systems
The problem of electrical power delivery is a common problem, especially in remote areas where electrical networks are difficult to reach. One of the ways that is used to overcome this problem is the use of networks separated from the electrical system through which it is possible to supply electrical energy to remote areas. These networks are called standalone microgrid systems. In this paper, a standalone micro-grid system consisting of a Photovoltaic (PV) and Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) based Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) is being designed and controlled. Fuzzy logic-based Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is being applied to a boost converter to control and extract the maximum power available for the PV system. The control system is designed to deliver the required energy to a specific load, in all scenarios. The excess energy generated by the PV panel is used to charge the batteries when the energy generated by the PV panel exceeds the energy required by... [more]

Keywords: closed-loop precharging, modular multilevel converter (MMC), precharging control scheme, sequential capacitors charging, single-phase MMC start-up control, start-up precharging process
Modularity, flexible scalability, and high efficiency are some of the aspects that have paved the way toward the modular multilevel converter (MMC) being regarded as one of the most encouraging converter technologies for medium-/high-power applications; however, the precharging process of all the distributed submodules’ capacitors during the MMC’s start-up is considered to be a very challenging technical problem, which has been the center of attention since the emergence of the MMC back in 2002. In this paper, a new start-up method based on the sequential capacitors’ charging method is introduced for precharging the single-phase MMC from the DC grid while drastically reducing the charging (start-up) time. A detailed design algorithm for the proposed start-up method is presented. The findings of the simulation of the proposed method are provided to illustrate the capability of the suggested method.

Keywords: distributed energy resources, optimisation, reactive power control, reactive power cost, smart inverter
The reactive power control mechanisms at the smart inverters will affect the voltage profile, active power losses and the cost of reactive power procurement in a different way. Therefore, this paper presents an assessment of the cost−benefit relationship obtained by enabling nine different reactive power control mechanisms at the smart inverters. The first eight reactive power control mechanisms are available in the literature and include the IEEE 1547−2018 standard requirements. The ninth control mechanism is an optimum reactive power control proposed in this paper. It is formulated to minimise the active power losses of the network and ensure the bus voltages and the reactive power of the smart inverter are within their allowable limits. The Vestfold and Telemark distribution network was implemented in DIgSILENT PowerFactory and used to evaluate the reactive power control mechanisms. The reactive power prices were taken from the default payment rate document of the National Grid. Sim... [more]
Energy-Aware Activity Control for Wireless Sensing Infrastructure Using Periodic Communication and Mixed-Integer Programming
Piotr Arabas, Andrzej Sikora, Wojciech Szynkiewicz
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy, mixed integer programming, wireless sensor network
This paper addresses the energy conservation problem in wireless sensor networks, in which sensor data are aggregated into packages and then transmitted periodically to the base station according to an established schedule. We formulate two mixed integer programming problems, first for minimum total energy usage and second for min-max per node energy usage. We present two algorithms for slot allocation that exploit the periodic nature of the data collection process by allocating a subset of nodes to subsequent frames. A mixed-integer solver solves the resulting mathematical programming task. The performed numerical experiments show that the proposed approach is appropriate for relatively small networks when minimizing the total energy consumption problem. Hopefully, the problem may be solved for medium size networks when a maximum node energy consumption performance index is used.

Keywords: energy prediction, Fault Detection, multiple linear regression analysis, swimming facilities
This paper presents a statistical model for predicting the time-averaged total power consumption of an indoor swimming facility. The model can be a powerful tool for continuous supervision of the facility’s energy performance that can quickly disclose possible operational disruptions/irregularities and thus minimize annual energy use. Multiple linear regression analysis is used to analyze data collected in a swimming facility in Norway. The resolution of the original training dataset was in 1 min time steps and during the investigation was transposed both by time-averaging the data, and by treating part of the dataset exclusively. The statistically significant independent variables were found to be the outdoor dry-bulb temperature and the relative pool usage factor. The model accurately predicted the power consumption in the validation process, and also succeeded in disclosing all the critical operational disruptions in the validation dataset correctly. The model can therefore be appli... [more]

Keywords: linear active disturbance rejection control, load frequency control, multi-source power system, reinforcement learning, soft actor-critic
To ensure the safe operation of an interconnected power system, it is necessary to maintain the stability of the frequency and the tie-line exchanged power. This is one of the hottest issues in the power system field and is usually called load frequency control. To overcome the influences of load disturbances on multi-source power systems containing thermal power plants, hydropower plants, and gas turbine plants, we design a linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) based on the tie-line bias control mode. For LADRC, the parameter selection of the controller directly affects the response performance of the entire system, and it is usually not feasible to manually adjust parameters. Therefore, to obtain the optimal controller parameters, we use the Soft Actor-Critic algorithm in reinforcement learning to obtain the controller parameters in real time, and we design the reward function according to the needs of the power system. We carry out simulation experiments to verify the... [more]

Keywords: frequency bifurcation, independent power control, induction heating, pulse density modulation, single source multi-frequency
In recent years, induction heating (IH) applications aided by electronic power control have gained significance. Particularly, for cooking applications, an appropriate control technique is required to feed power from a single source to multiple loads with minimum switching losses. Additionally, when multiple loads are used, it requires independent control and operation for each of the loads. The main idea of this work is to develop a single-stage AC-AC converter topology to feed power to multiple loads independently with a single source, with a reduced number of switching devices and with minimum switching losses. The proposed topology uses a frequency bifurcation concept to feed power to multiple loads by placing the transmitting coil and work coil at a distance of 3 cm. The source is resonated at a 25 kHz switching frequency, with the designed bifurcated frequencies of 20 kHz and 33 kHz. The resonant capacitors are appropriately chosen to operate at those frequencies. For real-time a... [more]

Keywords: coal-fired power plant, Fault Detection, induced draft fan, model update, multivariate state estimation technique
The induced draft (ID) fan is an important piece of auxiliary equipment in coal-fired power plants. Early fault detection of the ID fan can provide predictive maintenance and reduce unscheduled shutdowns, thus improving the reliability of the power generation. In this study, an adaptive model was developed to achieve the early fault detection of ID fans. First, a non-parametric monitoring model was constructed to describe the normal operating characteristics with the multivariate state estimation technique (MSET). A similarity index representing operation status was defined according to the prediction deviations to produce warnings of early faults. To deal with the model accuracy degradation because of variant condition operation of the ID fan, an adaptive strategy was proposed by using the samples with a high data quality index (DQI) to manage the memory matrix and update the MSET model, thereby improving the fault detection results. The proposed method was applied to a 300 MW coal-fi... [more]

Keywords: DTS, multistage fractured horizontal well, orthogonal experiment, temperature prediction model, tight reservoir
An accurate temperature profile of the multi-stage fractured horizontal well is the foundation of production profile interpretation using distributed temperature sensing. In this paper, an oil-water two-phase flow multi-stage fractured horizontal well temperature prediction model considering stress sensitivity effect and the Joule−Thomson effect is constructed. Based on the simulation calculation, the wellbore temperature variation under different formation parameters, water cuts, and fracture parameters is discussed. The wellbore temperature distribution in multistage fractured horizontal wells is affected by many factors. According to the principle of orthogonal experimental design, the difference between wellbore temperature and initial formation temperature is selected as the analysis condition. Sixteen groups of orthogonal experimental calculations are designed and conducted. By analyzing the experimental results, it is found that the fracture half-length, water production, and fo... [more]

Keywords: contingency assessment, controllable series compensation, line outage distribution factor, power dispatch, power system resilience
Research on enhancing power system resilience against extreme events is attracting significant attention and becoming a top global agenda. In this paper, a preventive augmented power dispatch model is proposed to provide a resilient operation. In the proposed model, a new N-1-1 security criterion is proposed to select disruptive N-1-1 contingency cases that might trigger cascading blackouts, and an iterative contingency assessment process based on the line outage distribution factor is proposed to deal with security constraints. In terms of optimization objectives, two objectives related to power flow on the transmission line are considered to reduce the possibility of overload outages. Controllable series compensation devices are also considered in the model to improve the power flow distribution. Case studies conducted on the modified IEEE 30-bus, 118-bus and Polish 2382-bus systems show that the power flow solution of the proposed power dispatch model can avoid some branches from un... Keywords: ancillary services DG, DER operation, distributed power injections, distribution-system modelling, sensitivity analysis, V-Q regulation, voltage improvement, voltage profile monitoring
The injection of apparent power to self-consumption buses generates voltage variations during network operation, which, when properly monitored, could support voltage regulation and control. In this paper, we propose a linear sensitivity modelling, quite useful for studies of voltage regulation with distributed energy resources (DER). This modelling consists of two analytical improvement steps: first, a full formulation for the voltage deviations, and second, the influence of line capacitance as Q-injections at the points of common couplings (PCCs). Our proposal is based on the linear topological sensitivity of an existing network (as a function of the line parameters X, R, and Bc), branch power flow (active−reactive power (P-Q)), and power injections at the PCCs. Here, the linear sensitivity algorithm is applied to a modified IEEE 33-bus distribution system to demonstrate its extended effectiveness to voltage monitoring and control scenarios. Its application estimates and compensates... [more]

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decision support systems, energy performance contracting, facility management, knowledge management, reduced order modelling
The energy efficiency of buildings is a key condition in the implementation of national sustainability policies. Energy efficiency of the built heritage is usually achieved through energy contracts or renovation projects that are based on decisions often taken with limited knowledge and in short time frames. However, the collection of comprehensive and reliable technical information to support the decision process is a long and expensive activity. Approximate assessment methods based on stationary thermal models are usually adopted, often introducing unacceptable uncertainties for economically onerous contracts. Hence, it is important to develop tools that, by capitalizing on the operators’ experience, can provide support for fast and reliable assessments. The paper documents the development of a decision support system prototype for the management of energy refurbishment investments in the residential building sector that assists operators in the energy performance assessment, using a... Keywords: big data analytics, building informatics, fault detection and diagnostics, fault taxonomy, semantic analysis
Detecting and diagnosing HVAC faults is critical for maintaining building operation performance, reducing energy waste, and ensuring indoor comfort. An increasing deployment of commercial fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) software tools in commercial buildings in the past decade has significantly increased buildings’ operational reliability and reduced energy consumption. A massive amount of data has been generated by the FDD software tools. However, efficiently utilizing FDD data for ‘big data’ analytics, algorithm improvement, and other data-driven applications is challenging because the format and naming conventions of those data are very customized, unstructured, and hard to interpret. This paper presents the development of a unified taxonomy for HVAC faults. A taxonomy is an orderly classification of HVAC faults according to their characteristics and causal relations. The taxonomy includes fault categorization, physical hierarchy, fault library, relation model, and naming/tagg... [more]

Keywords: DC-DC converters, generated Lyapunov functions, Krasovskii’s passivity, linear matrix inequalities, nonlinear systems, physical models, robust control, μ-synthesis
This paper presents an end-to-end method to design passivity-based controllers (PBC) for a class of input-affine nonlinear systems, named quasi-linear affine. The approach is developed using Krasovskii’s method to design a Lyapunov function for studying the asymptotic stability, and a sufficient condition to construct a storage function is given, along with a supply-rate function. The linear fractional transformation interconnection between the nonlinear system and the Krasovskii PBC (K-PBC) results in a system which manages to follow the provided input trajectory. However, given that the input and output of the closed-loop system do not have the same physical significance, a path planning is mandatory. For the path planning component, we propose a robust controller designed using the μ-synthesis mixed-sensitivity loop-shaping for the linearized system around a desired equilibrium point. As a case study, we present the proposed methodology for DC-DC converters in a unified manner, givi... [more]
Obtaining Robust Performance of a Current fed Voltage Source Inverter for Virtual Inertia Response in a Low Short Circuit Ratio Condition
Clint Z. Ally, Erik C. W. de Jong
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current fed inverter, robust control, virtual inertia, weak grid
Low inertia levels are typical in island power systems due to the relatively small rotational generation. Displacing rotational generation units with static inertia-less PV power results in a significant increase in the frequency volatility. Virtual inertia provided by inverter-storage systems can resolve this issue. However, a low short circuit ratio (SCR) at the point of common coupling together with a fast phase locked loop (PLL) will compromise the response performance of the system. To address this issue, a robust PI controller (RPI) for the inner current-loop of a current fed grid-connected inverter is proposed. The PLL disturbance and grid impedance are incorporated into a single model and recast to a generalized representation of the system, thereby allowing easy tuning of the RPI by the mixed sensitivity H∞ method. The performance of the RPI is compared with that of a PI controller (PI) tuned by the regular loop-shaping method. The results show that when the SCR is above 10, t... [more]

Keywords: CO2 injectivity, CO2 sequestration, contact angle, sandstone, wettability
Wettability is one of the main parameters controlling CO2 injectivity and the movement of CO2 plume during geological CO2 sequestration. Despite significant research efforts, there is still a high uncertainty associated with the wettability of CO2/brine/rock systems and how they evolve with CO2 exposure. This study, therefore, aims to measure the contact angle of sandstone samples with varying clay content before and after laboratory core flooding at different reservoir pressures, of 10 MPa and 15 MPa, and a temperature of 323 K. The samples’ microstructural changes are also assessed to investigate any potential alteration in the samples’ structure due to carbonated water exposure. The results show that the advancing and receding contact angles increased with the increasing pressure for both the Berea and Bandera Gray samples. Moreover, the results indicate that Bandera Gray sandstone has a higher contact angle. The sandstones also turn slightly more hydrophobic after core flooding, in... [more]

Keywords: air source heat pumps, demand-controlled ventilation, energy efficiency improvement, energy efficiency measures, energy management
The paper analyzes and compares the perspectives for reducing the energy consumption associated to the operation of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning system for climatic control of large-size non-residential buildings. Three different control strategies are considered comparing the use of boiler and heat pumps as heating systems and analyzing the use of demand-controlled ventilation, operating on the effective occupancy of the building. The control strategies are applied to two different educational buildings with shapes representative of typical educational structures. The results of the analysis show how the energy consumption can be reduced up to 70%, shifting from the actual values of the energy intensity of over 300 kWh/m2 for year to values of less than 100 kWh/m2 per year. The significance of the energy savings achieved in such different buildings has led to the identification of a possible benchmark for HVAC systems in the next future years which could help reach the env... Keywords: explicit model predictive control, multi-parameter quadratic programming, perturbed piecewise affine systems, real-time control, turboshaft engine limit protection
The traditional model predictive control (tMPC) algorithms have a large amount of online calculation, which makes it difficult to apply them directly to turboshaft engine−rotor systems because of real time requirements. Therefore, based on the theory of the perturbed piecewise affine system (PWA) and multi-parameter quadratic programming explicit model predictive control (mpQP-eMPC) algorithm, we develop a controller design method for turboshaft engine−rotor systems, which can be used for engine steady-state, transient state and limit protection control. This method consists of two steps: controller offline design and online implementation. Firstly, the parameter space of the PWA system is divided into several partitions offline based on the disturbance and performance constraints. Each partition has its own control law, which is in the form of piecewise affine linear function between the controller and the parameters. The control laws for those partitions are also obtained in this off... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 2D-Interpolation, feedforward control, interpolation error compensation, look-up table PMSM drive
This paper proposes a compensation method for interpolation error of the maximum power control of a PMSM control system that generates current commands through a look-up table. A torque control system using a look-up table created through experiments has superior characteristics, such as control stability and torque accuracy, compared to a system that executes torque control via a linear controller based on modeling. However, it is impossible to generate information on all the currents for the output torque in the table. Therefore, because the data stored in the look-up table have a discrete characteristic, they are linearly interpolated to generate a current command for the torque command. However, the PMSM current trajectory is generally elliptical, which causes an error owing to linear interpolation, reducing the maximum output power. In particular, when the table data are insufficient, such as in the high-speed operation range, the reduced maximum output cannot be ignored. This pap... [more]

The 2018 revision of the European Performance Building Directive (EPBD) requires that from the year 2020 onwards, all new buildings will have to be “nearly zero energy buildings”. It also further promotes smart building technologies, raising awareness amongst building owners and occupants of the value behind building automation. The European Commission also identified, in 2011, Key Enabling Technologies (KETs), which provide the basis for innovation in the EU. In the frame of the SUDOKET project, the Solar XXI building was used as a pilot case, as innovative integrated solutions and technologies are monitored and controlled. The objective of this paper is to validate a simulation of the laboratorial test room in EnergyPlus with data obtained experimentally and determine the impact of the control systems on energy needs and on thermal comfort. Two systems, in particular, were studied: the Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) and the earth tubes. Once validated, the simulation of the... [more]

A new Single-sided Variable Flux Permanent Magnet Linear Machine with flux bridge in mover core is proposed in this paper. The flux bridge prevents the leakage flux from the mover and converts it into flux linkage, which greatly influences the performance of the machine. First, a lumped parameter model is used to find the suitable coil combination and no-load flux linkage of the proposed machine, which greatly reduces the computational time and drive storage. Secondly, the proposed machine replaces the expensive rare earth permanent magnets with ferrite magnets and provides improved flux controlling capability under variable excitation currents. Multivariable geometric optimization is utilized to optimize the leading design parameters like split ratio, stator pole width, width and height of permanent magnet, flux bridge width, the width of mover’s tooth, and stator slot depth at constant electric and magnetic loading. The optimized design increases the flux linkage by 44.11%, average t... [more]

Keywords: adaptive control, electric drive, nonlinear control, two-mass system
In numerous electric drive applications, the mechanical phenomena in the velocity or position control loop determine real difficulties and challenges for the control system. So-called two-mass drive systems with a flexible shaft are the most important example of this situation. The problem becomes even more difficult if the characteristics of torque transmission along the shaft are nonlinear, nonlinear friction is present, and the plant parameters are unknown, as it happens in numerous robotic systems. A novel adaptive controller is derived for such a system. The recurrent design procedure is based on proper modifications of the adaptive backstepping scheme, including non-strict-feedback plant application, tuning functions to exclude controller overparameterization, robust adaptive laws, proper means to avoid controller complexity explosion, and a nonlinear PI controller in the initial loop to minimize quasi-steady-state tracking error.
