Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deregulated LFC, Model Predictive Control, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sooty terns optimization
This paper introduces a novel metaheuristic approach of sooty terns optimization algorithm (STOA) to determine the optimum parameters of model predictive control (MPC)-based deregulated load frequency control (LFC). The system structure consists of three interconnected plants with nonlinear multisources comprising wind turbine, photovoltaic model with maximum power point tracker, and superconducting magnetic energy storage under deregulated environment. March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: FPGA, HVAC, intelligent building, intelligent heating control
Very often, constructors and designers of intelligent building and building automation systems have a choice: to create a compact system with a limited configuration and modifying the system’s behavior possibilities or provide a fully configurable solution at the expense of introducing a full SCADA system equipped with an additional knowledge database and inference system equipped with learning capabilities. In the presented work, we show that there is a third solution. Using a multilayer control system composed of programmable FPGAs, small PCs, and cloud computing resources, we can design and implement a fully configurable intelligent control system for the building’s heating. Our solution combines the compactness of the structure and the ease of installation and assembly.

Aggregation of Radial Distribution System Bus with Volt-Var Control
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: advanced inverter, distribution system, IEC 61850-90-7, IEEE 1547, photovoltaic, power system analysis, power system modeling, reactive power control, voltage regulation
The high penetration of the distributed energy resources (DERs) encourages themselves to implement grid-supporting functions, such as volt-var control. The quasi-static time-series (QSTS) simulation is an essential technique to evaluate the impact of active DERs on the grid. Meanwhile, the increase of complexity on the circuit model causes a heavy computational burden of QSTS simulation. Although circuit reduction methods have been proposed, there have been few methods that can appropriately handle the distribution system (DS) with multiple voltage control devices, such as DERs implementing volt-var control. To address the remaining issues, this paper proposes an offline bus aggregation method for DS with volt-var control. The method determines the volt-var curve for the aggregated bus on the basis of historical data to reduce error in the aggregated model, and its offline process solves the computational convergence issue concerned in the online one. The effectiveness of the proposed... [more]

The Challenges of Low Voltage Distribution System State Estimation—An Application Oriented Review
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active distribution systems, distribution system state estimation, grid models, low voltage grid control, low voltage state estimation, meter placement, observability, pilot projects, pseudo data generation
Global trends such as the growing share of renewable energy sources in the generation mix, electrification, e-mobility, and the increasing number of prosumers reshape the electricity value chain, and distribution systems are necessarily affected. These systems were planned, developed, and operated as a passive structure for decades with low level of observability. Due to the increasing number of system states, real time operation planning and flexibility services are the key in transition to an active grid management. In this pathway, distribution system state estimation (DSSE) has a great potential, but the real demonstration of this technique is in an early stage, especially on low-voltage level. This paper focuses on the gap between theory and practice and summarizes the limits of low-voltage DSSE implementation. The literature and the main findings follow the general structure of a state estimation process (meter placement, bad data detection, observability, etc.) giving a more ess... [more]

Investigation of Adaptive Droop Control Applied to Low-Voltage DC Microgrid
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC microgrid, dc-dc converter, droop control, load sharing, parallel operation
In a DC microgrid, droop control is the most common and widely used strategy for managing the power flow from sources to loads. Conventional droop control has some limitations such as poor voltage regulation and improper load sharing between converters during unequal source voltages, different cable resistances, and load variations. This paper addressed the limitations of conventional droop control by proposing a simple adaptive droop control technique. The proposed adaptive droop control method was designed based on mathematical calculations, adjusting the droop parameters accordingly. The primary objective of the proposed adaptive droop controller was to improve the performance of the low-voltage DC microgrid by maintaining proper load sharing, reduced circulating current, and better voltage regulation. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology was verified by conducting simulation and experimental studies.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: finite volume method, hempcrete, hysteresis, passive application, phase change materials, temperature controls, thermal energy storage, thermal mass, wall assembly
Phase change material (PCM)-enhanced building envelopes can control indoor temperatures and save energy. However, PCM needs to undergo a phase change transition from solid to liquid and back to be fully effective. Furthermore, most previous research integrated PCM with high embodied energy materials. This study aims to advance the existing research on integrating PCM into carbon-negative wall assemblies composed of hempcrete and applying temperature control strategies to improve wall systems’ performance while considering the hysteresis phenomenon. Four hempcrete and hempcrete-PCM (HPCM) wall design configurations were simulated and compared under different control strategies designed to reduce energy demand while enhancing the phase change transition of the microencapsulated PCM. The HPCM wall types outperformed the hempcrete wall assembly through heating (~3−7%) and cooling (~7.8−20.7%) energy savings. HPCM walls also maintained higher wall surface temperatures during the coldest day... [more]

Modeling and Control Design Based on Petri Nets Tool for a Serial Three-Phase Five-Level Multicellular Inverter Used as a Shunt Active Power Filter
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: FCMI, harmonic distortion, hybrid system, Petri Nets, shunt active power filter
In this work, we represent a shunt active power filter (SAPF) based on a serial three-phase flying capacitor multilevel inverter (FCMI) controlled by a Petri Nets representation (PNs). This structure is chosen for its significant performances. In fact, the use of the FCMI within the SAPF makes it possible to increase the apparent switching frequency of the structure in order to reduce the value then the volume and weight of the inductance of the output filter. Besides, the FCMI allows the synthesis of a high-voltage signal using low-voltage semiconductor components. Therefore, improving the reliability of this structure leads to the improvement of the dynamics of the SAPF. This paper deals with a new control methodology based on PNs to regulate the flying capacitor voltages and the reference currents issued by the instantaneous active and reactive power theory. Compared to a conventional SAPF composed by a classical two-level inverter and controlled by a simple PWM control, simulation... [more]

New grid-connected systems have imposed additional requirements regarding reliability, power quality, high levels of power processing capacity, and fault support, where power converters have a crucial role in fulfilling these requirements. Overcoming one of these challenges, this paper proposes a new alternative application to improve the low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) support based on the arm impedance employment of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) by attenuating the fault impacts, avoiding overcurrents and overvoltages. This proposal does not require additional hardware or control loops for LVRT support, only using PI controllers. This paper evaluates symmetrical and asymmetrical grid fault impacts on the converter DC side of four converter topologies: two-level voltage source converter topology (2L-VSC), neutral point clamped (NPC), MMC, and 2L-VSC equipped with a DC-chopper, employing the same control structure for the four topologies, highlighting that the MMC contributed b... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: closed loop operation, electric output characterization, high-frequency input filter, photovoltaic energy conversion, switched mode power converter
Photovoltaic energy generation potential can be tapped with maximum efficacy by characterizing the source behaviour. Characterization refers to the systematic terminal measurement-based PV modeling which can further facilitate output prediction and fault detection. Most of the existing PV characterization methods fail for high-power PV array due to increased thermal losses in electronic components. Here, we propose a switched-mode power converter-based PV characterization setup which is designed with input filter to limit switching ripple entering into PV array under test, thereby enhancing system life and efficiency. The high resonant frequency input filter ensures its compactness with high-speed characterization capability. To further enhance the system performance, a closed-loop current control of the system is designed for high bandwidth and stable phase margins. Tactile Occupant Detection Sensor for Automotive Airbag
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automotive airbag, capacitive tactile sensor, occupant detection, passive safety, vehicle crash
Automotive airbags protect occupants from crash forces during severe vehicle collisions. They absorb energy and restrain the occupants by providing a soft cushion effect known as the restraint effect. Modern airbags offer partial restraint effect control by controlling the bag’s vent holes and providing multi-stage deployment. Full restraint effect control is still a challenge because the closed-loop restraint control system needs airbag−occupant contact and interaction feedback. In this work, we have developed novel single and matrix capacitive tactile sensors to measure the occupant’s contact data. They can be integrated with the airbag surface and folded to follow the dynamic airbag shape during the deployment. The sensors are tested under a low-velocity pendulum impact and benchmarked with high-speed test videos. The results reveal that the single sensor can successfully measure occupant−airbag contact time and estimate the area, while the contact position is additionally identifie... [more]

Robust L Approximation of an LCL Filter Type Grid-Connected Inverter Using Active Disturbance Rejection Control under Grid Impedance Uncertainty
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active disturbance rejection control (ADRC), extended state observer (ESO), grid impedance, grid-connected inverter, LCL filter, resonance and antiresonance effect
High-order filters, such as LCL, are more commonly employed in grid-connected inverters (GcIs) as an interference element for the better attenuation of switching harmonics. However, LCL filters may have resonance poles and antiresonance zeros in the frequency response with inverter side current. This may affect the stability of the system and limit the control bandwidth with the simple single-loop PI control. This becomes severe with the introduction of grid impedance due to the large distance between renewable energy sources and the power grid. To mitigate this effect, active damping and sensorless damping is preferred with pre-information about grid impedance. In this paper, linear active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) is introduced, first to L filter type GcI and later extended to LCL filter type GcIs with minimum modification. From the frequency analysis, it is shown that the characteristics of the proposed control scheme remain the same even with a change in filter order and... [more]

Investigation of Water Injection Influence on Cloud Cavitating Vortical Flow for a NACA66 (MOD) Hydrofoil
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cloud cavitation, flow control, re-entrant jet, vortical flow, water injection
Re-entrant jet causes cloud cavitation shedding, and cavitating vortical flow results in flow field instability. In the present work, a method of water injection is proposed to hinder re-entrant jet and suppress vortex in cloud cavitating flow of a NACA66 (MOD) hydrofoil (Re = 5.1 × 105, σ = 0.83). A combination of filter-based density corrected turbulence model (FBDCM) with the Zwart−Gerber−Belamri cavitation model (ZGB) is adopted to obtain the transient flow characteristics while vortex structures are identified by Q criterion & λ2 criterion. Results demonstrate that the injected water flow reduces the range of the low-pressure zone below 1940 Pa on the suction surface by 54.76%. Vortex structures are observed both inside the attached and shedding cavitation, and the water injection shrinks the vortex region. The water injection successfully blocks the re-entrant jet by generating a favorable pressure gradient (FPG) and effectively weakens the re-entrant jet intensity by 46.98%. The... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: neutral point current, offset duty, PWM converter, T-type, unbalanced
Since a T-type three-level PWM converter has several advantages in terms of harmonics and conduction loss, it has been widely adopted for various low voltage applications. However, a neutral point voltage control is necessarily required for stable system operation, and an offset voltage can effectively provide the required neutral point current under unbalanced load conditions. Nevertheless, all types of unbalanced loads cannot be accommodated; in other words, there is a limitation on how much unbalanced load conditions can be allowed. Therefore, this paper analyzed the maximum allowable unbalanced load conditions in the T-type three-level PWM converter. This result can be properly utilized for an effective design verification considering unbalanced load conditions as well as a comprehensive approach for the stable system operation.
