Use of Discharge Resistor to Improve Transient De-Excitation in Brushless Synchronous Machines
Emilio Rebollo, Carlos A. Platero, David Talavera, Ricardo Granizo
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brushless excitation, brushless rotating machines, brushless synchronous machine testing, de-excitation system, de-excitation time constant, machine protection, protection system, synchronous generator excitation, synchronous machines
The discharge resistor is only used in case of electrical trip to reduce the field current as fast as possible and to minimize the damages produced by the short-circuit current supplied by the synchronous machine. The connection of the discharge resistor is done by opening the field breaker and it implies a large negative voltage in the field winding. This negative voltage is limited to 80% of the winding insulation voltage. On the other hand, in case of a transient de-excitation, at the first moment, the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) reduces the field voltage to the minimum. In case of one-quadrant rectifier type AVR, the minimum voltage is zero and in case of two-quadrant rectifier AVR, the minimum voltage is close to the ceiling voltage with negative polarity. In both cases, the minimum voltages are much smaller than the negative voltage produced by the connection of the discharge resistor. This paper presents a new system that improves the transient de-excitation of synchronous... [more]

Keywords: pressured pipe flow, self-adaptive auxiliary control, surge tank, transient response, water hammer control, water surge oscillation
The water hammer can cause great risks in water supply pipe systems. A surge tank is a kind of general water hammer control device. In order to improve the behavior of the surge tank, a self-adaptive auxiliary control (SAC) system was proposed in this paper. The system can optimize the response of the surge tank according to the transient pressure. The numerical model and the matched boundary conditions were established to simulate the improved surge tank and optimize the SAC system. Then, various transient responses were simulated by the proposed model with different parameters set. The proposed system is validated by comparing the water hammer process in a river-pipe-valve (RLV) system with and without SAC. The results show that the SAC can greatly improve the water hammer control of the pipeline and the water level oscillation of the surge tank. With the SAC system, the required vertical size of the surge tank can be significantly reduced with the desired water hammer control functi... [more]

Fault diagnosis and maintenance of a whole-building system is a complex task to perform. A wide range of available building fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) tools are only capable of performing fault detection using behavioral constraints analysis. However, the validity of the detected symptom is always questionable. In this work, we introduce the concept of the contextual test with validity constraints, in the context of building fault diagnostics. Thanks to a common formalization of the proposed heterogeneous tests, rule-, range-, and model-based tests can be combined in the same diagnostic analysis that reduces the whole-building modeling effort. The proposed methodology comprises the minimum diagnostic explanation feature that can significantly improve the knowledge of the building facility manager. A bridge diagnosis approach is used to describe the multiple fault scenarios. The proposed methodology is validated on an experimental building called the center for studies and desi... [more]

Keywords: anti-lock braking controller (CAB), anti-lock braking system (ABS), fuzzy control, PID control, sliding mode wheel slip ratio controller (SMWSC)
With the development of in-wheel technology (IWT), the design of the electric vehicles (EV) is getting much improved. The anti-lock braking system (ABS), which is a safety benchmark for automotive braking, is particularly important. Installing the braking motor at each fixed position of the wheel improves the intelligent control of each wheel. The nonlinear ABS with robustness performance is highly needed during the vehicle’s braking. The anti-lock braking controller (CAB) designed in this paper considered the well-known adhesion force, the resistance force from air and the wheel rolling friction force, which bring the vehicle model closer to the real situation. A sliding mode wheel slip ratio controller (SMWSC) is proposed to yield anti-lock control of wheels with an adaptive sliding surface. The vehicle dynamics model is established and simulated with consideration of different initial braking velocities, different vehicle masses and different road conditions. By comparing the brakin... Keywords: control condition, load rejection test, numerical simulation, pressure fluctuation, pumped storage power station
In this study, fast Fourier transform and inverse transform are adopted for noise reduction filtering the data of load rejection pressure of a single unit in a one-tube, four-unit pumped storage power station. Five-spot triple smoothing method is used to extract the time-average and pulsation value of the water hammer pressure of the spiral case and draft tube inlet. The reasonable correction formula is put forward, and the pulsating pressure rise rate of the spiral case (4.44%) and the draft tube inlet (−1.22%) are obtained. A mathematical model is also established for the transition process of the water conveyance and power generation system of the pumped storage power station, and the field single-unit load rejection condition is simulated. The simulation results are consistent with the measurements, and the accuracy of the calculation model in predicting the time-average pressure of water hammer is verified. Thus, the extreme successive load rejection conditions can be simulated ba... [more]

Keywords: continuously variable transmission, control, electro-hydraulic actuator, fuzzy adaptive sliding mode control, wind energy
The wind energy conversion system (WEC) has been increasingly proposed to capture wind energy producing electrical power in high efficiency. One of the most important factors that has significant influence on the overall efficiency is the performance of generators in a fixed-speed wind turbine. The efficiency of the generator strongly depends on the operating speed. Therefore, the generator should be controlled to operate at the rated speed to increase the overall efficiency. In this paper, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) was employed to maintain the speed of the generator by controlling the transmission ratio. By employing a position control system based on an electro-hydraulic actuator (EHA), the speed ratio could be tuned continuously to keep the generator at rated speed. Here, an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control (AFSC) was developed to control the proposed EHA CVT. Mathematical analysis was also carried out to investigate the global stability of the system. Finally, e... [more]

Keywords: fault diagnosis and tolerant control method, open-switch fault, space vector modulation (SVM), three-level neutral-point clamped (NPC) active rectifier
This paper proposes a fault diagnosis and tolerant control methods for an open-switch fault caused in a three-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) pulse-width modulation (PWM) active rectifier. The open-switch fault in the three-level NPC active rectifier causes a distortion in the input phase current and a ripple in the DC-link capacitor voltage. Therefore, proper fault diagnosis and tolerant control methods are required to prevent additional failures and performance degradation in the rectifier system. This paper conducted a detailed analysis of the effect of the single open-switch fault on the NPC PWM active rectifier and proposed a fault diagnosis method utilizing the DC link voltage and the phase angle of the input grid voltage. Furthermore, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant control method to reduce the effect of the open-switch fault by compensating a distorted reference voltage. The effectiveness of the proposed fault diagnosis and tolerant control methods are verifi... [more]

Keywords: co-simulation platform, coordinated defense, distributed denial of service, load frequency control
With the application of information and communication technology (ICT), the modern power system has gradually been updated to a typical cyber physical power system (CPPS). The deployment of distributed measurement devices enriches the application range of power communication services. However, due to the easy accessibility of distributed devices, it also creates favorable conditions for distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. In this paper, we focus on the security performance and defense strategies of the CPPS against DDoS attacks. In order to construct a coordinated defense in the power and information space, the cyber-attack process with a complete data flow of the CPPS needs to be described precisely. Therefore, a co-simulation technology-based platform is utilized to coordinate various layers in the CPPS and provide a unified research tool for the attack-defense test. On this basis, OPNET is used to replicate DDoS attacks in the information layer. Then, through the load freq... [more]

This article presents the results of a comparative analysis of two electronically commutated brushless direct current machines intended for fault-tolerant drives. Two machines designed by the authors were compared: a 12/14 dual-channel brushless direct current motor (DCBLDCM) with permanent magnets and a 12/8 dual-channel switched reluctance motor (DCSRM). Information is provided here on the winding configuration, the parameters, and the power converters of both machines. We developed mathematical models of the DCBLDCM and DCSRM which accounted for the nonlinearity of their magnetization characteristics in dual-channel operation (DCO) and single-channel operation (SCO) modes. The static torque characteristics and flux characteristics of both machines were compared for operation in DCO and SCO modes. The waveforms of the current and the electromagnetic torque are presented for DCO and SCO operating conditions. For DCO mode, an analysis of the behavior of both machines under fault condit... [more]

This paper examines the recent advances made in the field of Deep Learning (DL) methods for the automated identification of Partial Discharges (PD). PD activity is an indication of the state and operational conditions of electrical equipment systems. There are several techniques for on-line PD measurements, but the typical classification and recognition method is made off-line and involves an expert manually extracting appropriate features from raw data and then using these to diagnose PD type and severity. Many methods have been developed over the years, so that the appropriate features expertly extracted are used as input for Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. More recently, with the developments in computation and data storage, DL methods have been used for automated features extraction and classification. Several contributions have demonstrated that Deep Neural Networks (DNN) have better accuracy than the typical ML methods providing more efficient automated identification technique... [more]

Keywords: control strategy, DC power flow control, decoupling, multi-port topology, multi-terminal HVDC transmission system
A DC power flow controller (DCPFC) can help to facilitate power flow routing in the multi-terminal high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system. Realizing its multi-port output can effectively improve the device regulate range and capability. Based on analysis of the traditional multi-port interline DC power flow controller (MI-DCPFC), this paper presents a switches reduced topology of MI-DCPFC. In addition, for solving the problem of coupling of the port-output voltage of the traditional MI-DCPFC, a novel control strategy based on carrier phase shifting pulse width modulation (CPS-PWM) is proposed. It implements the decoupling of the port-output voltage of MI-DCPFC, which can ensure completely independent tracking of the power flow regulating commands for different controlled lines. Moreover, key relationships between the system state variables are also analyzed and detailed in this study. Finally, the performance of the proposed controller and control strategy are confirmed... Keywords: condition monitoring, electrical machines, Fault Detection, static eccentricity, synchronous generators
Large synchronous generators are the heart of the modern world, while producing the vast majority of the electric power consumed globally. Although they are robust devices, they are prone to degradation and failure. If such failures are not detected at an early stage, then the negative impact may be catastrophic in terms of financial costs, repair times, human lives and quality of life. This is the reason for continuous research in the field of condition monitoring aiming towards the reliable operation of synchronous generators. This paper proposes a novel technique for the diagnosis of the static eccentricity in synchronous generators. The proposed approach is off-line and non-intrusive, allowing the estimation of the fault severity with stator current measurements only. The performed work has been carried out with Finite Element Simulations and extensive experimental testing.

Keywords: admittance reshaping, distributed generation, impedance coupling, inverter, weak grid
With the increasing impedance coupling between inverters and grid caused by the phase-locked loop (PLL), traditional three-phase inverters suffer from the harmonic distortion or instability problems under weak grid conditions. Therefore, the admittance reshaping control methods are proposed to mitigate the interactions between inverters and grid. Firstly, a dynamics model of traditional inverter output admittance including main circuit and PLL is developed in the direct-quadrature (dq) frame. And the qq channel impedance of the inverter presents as a negative incremental resistance with the PLL effect. Secondly, two admittance reshaping control methods are proposed to improve the system damping. The first reshaping technique uses the feedforward point of common coupling (PCC) voltage to modify the inverter output admittance. The second reshaping technique adopts the active damping controller to reconstruct the PLL equivalent admittance. The proposed control methods not only increase th... [more]

Energy Management System (EMS) optimal strategies have shown great potential to match the fluctuating energy production from renewables with an electric demand profile, which opens the way to a deeper penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the electric system. At a single building level, however, handling of different energy sources to fulfill both thermal and electric requirements is still a challenging task. The present work describes the potential of an EMS based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategies to both maximize the RES exploitation and serve as an ancillary service for the grid when a Heat Pump (HP) coupled with a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is used in a residential Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES). Cost savings up to 30% as well as a reduction of the purchased energy unbalance with the grid (about 15%−20% depending on the season) have been achieved. Moreover, the thermal energy storage leads to a more efficient and reliable use of the Heat Pump by gen... [more]

Keywords: decoupling, distributed power generation system (DPGS), grid-connected voltage source converters (GC-VSCs), optimal gain, reduced order generalized integrator (ROGI)
Grid-connected voltage source converters (GC-VSCs) are used for interfacing the distributed power generation system (DPGS) to the utility grid. Performance of the current loop is a critical issue for these GC-VSCs. Recently, reduced order generalized integrator (ROGI)-based current controller is proposed, such that AC reference signal of positive or negative sequences can be separately tracked without steady-state error, which has the advantage of less computational burden. However, the cross-coupling within the ROGI-based current controller would deteriorate the transient response of the current loop. In this paper, a ROGI-based decoupled current controller is proposed to eliminate the coupling between α -axis and β -axis. Thus, the faster dynamic response performance can be achieved while maintaining the merits of ROGI-based current controller. An optimal gain parameter design method for the proposed current controller is presented to improve the stability and dynamic respo... [more]

Keywords: association, circuit, firing, IGBTs, inverter, medium, series, thyristors, TO-247, voltage
The use of series connected IGBTs is still a current subject in literature, despite such a discussion having started in the 1990s. Though countless academic studies, there are currently no available commercial products on the market for medium voltage inverters (up to 4.16 kV) and lower power (up to 1 MW) using this technology. This is related to the difficulty of ensuring the dynamic and static voltage sharing between IGBTs, giving rise to relatively expensive and complex firing circuits, when compared to the components they intend to control. Therefore, this article aims to present a simple and low-cost alternative, still effective for driving low voltage series-connected IGBTs, specifically for the encapsulation TO-247 type. Experimental results are presented showing the behavior of the solution under several operating conditions.

Keywords: AC drive, dual inverter, floating capacitor, multilevel inverter, voltage sag ride-through
One of the main power quality issues that can affect variable speed drives (VSDs) is the occurrence of voltage sags on their AC power supply. Voltage sags can affect the inverter nominal operation, leading to a malfunction of the AC motor. This paper presents an inverter with resilient capability to voltage sags. The topology consists of two conventional three-phase bridge inverters arranged to require just a single DC source. This inverter is also characterized by a voltage multilevel operation, providing the full advantages of multilevel converters without the need for level balancing. Associated with this AC motor driver, a control system based on a field-oriented controller with a vector voltage modulator that will enable voltage sag ride-through capability is proposed. The proposed control system does not require any changes in the occurrence of voltage sags. To verify the characteristics of the proposed drive and control system, simulation tests are provided. Keywords: energy storage system, filter design, remote island microgrid, seamless transfer
The inverter of an energy storage system, which plays an important role in maintaining the voltage of a stand-alone microgrid, can shut down in response to external or internal abnormal conditions. Such a protective measure can cause the microgrid to blackout. A redundant inverter can be configured to respond upon failure of the main inverter to ensure higher stability of the stand-alone microgrid. However, the microgrid may experience several to tens of blackout cycles when the main inverter fails owing to a time delay in the operation of the sub inverter. To overcome this limitation, we propose an LCpL filter for suppressing any sudden changes in the microgrid during the transition period between the main and sub inverters. In addition, this study also describes a control method for the sub inverter to prevent system blackouts. A 100 kW microgrid system consisting of two 100 kW inverters with LCpL filters and loads was used to demonstrate the efficacy/utility of the proposed method.
