A Novel Buck Converter with Constant Frequency Controlled Technique
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive on time (AOT), average current mode (ACM), constant off time (CFT), constant on time (COT), current mode control (CMC), electromagnetic interference (EMI), peak current mode (PCM), phase lock loop (PLL), valley current mode (VCM), voltage mode control (VMC)
This paper presents a buck converter with a novel constant frequency controlled technique, which employs the proposed frequency detector and adaptive on-time control (AOT) logic to lock the switching frequency. The control scheme, design concept, and circuit realization are presented. In contrast to a complex phase lock loop (PLL), the proposed scheme is easy to implement. With this novel technique, a buck converter is designed to produce an output voltage of 1.0−2.5 V at the input voltage of 3.0−3.6 V and the maximum load current of 500 mA. The proposed scheme was verified using SIMPLIS and MathCAD. The simulation results show that the switching frequency variation is less than 1% at an output voltage of 1.0−2.5 V. Furthermore, the recovery time is less than 2 μs for a step-up and step-down load transient. The circuit will be fabricated using UMC 0.18 μm 1P6M CMOS processes. The control scheme, design concept and circuit realization are presented in this paper.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Fault Detection, indices-based technique, multiphase induction motors
The multiphase induction motor is considered to be the promising alternative to the conventional three-phase induction motor, especially in safety-critical applications because of its inherent fault-tolerant feature. Therefore, the attention of many researchers has been paid to develop different techniques for detecting various fault types of multiphase induction motors, to securely switch the control mode of the multiphase drive system to its post-fault operation mode. Therefore, several fault detection methods have been researched and adapted; one of these methods is the indices-based fault detection technique. This technique was firstly introduced to detect open-phase fault of multiphase induction motors. The main advantage of this technique is that its mathematical formulation is straightforward and can easily be understood and implemented. In this paper, the study of the indices-based fault detection technique has been extended to test its applicability in detecting some other sta... [more]

A Digitalized Design Risk Analysis Tool with Machine-Learning Algorithm for EPC Contractor’s Technical Specifications Assessment on Bidding
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, decision support, engineering procurement and construction (EPC), machine learning algorism, phrase matcher, risk phrase extraction, technical risk extraction, technical specifications, terms frequency, text and data mining
Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects span the entire cycle of industrial plants, from bidding to engineering, construction, and start-up operation and maintenance. Most EPC contractors do not have systematic decision-making tools when bidding for the project; therefore, they rely on manual analysis and experience in evaluating the bidding contract documents, including technical specifications. Oftentimes, they miss or underestimate the presence of technical risk clauses or risk severity, potentially create with a low bid price and tight construction schedule, and eventually experience severe cost overrun or/and completion delays. Through this study, two digital modules, Technical Risk Extraction and Design Parameter Extraction, were developed to extract and analyze risks in the project’s technical specifications based on machine learning and AI algorithms. In the Technical Risk Extraction module, technical risk keywords in the bidding technical specifications are c... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dynamic output feedback controller (DOFC), exponentially mean-square stable (EMS), inter-area low-frequency oscillations, packet loss of wide-area signals, wide-area damping controller (WADC)
In this paper, the inter-area low-frequency oscillations are restrained in the interconnected power system by making use of the delay-dependent wide-area dynamic output feedback controller (DOFC). Modal analysis is adopted to obtain the modes of inter-area oscillation to be controlled and the Schur truncation model reduction technique is represented to reduce the order of the power system. The augmented closed-loop system model, where the transmission delay and packet loss of wide-area signals are considered, is established. The sufficient conditions of exponentially mean-square stable are obtained according to Lyapunov’s stability theory. Finally, case studies are carried out on a two-area four-machine power system, where our proposed controller, a conventional controller, and the wide-area damping controller in the existing references are installed, respectively. The simulation results under different external disturbances, packet loss rates, and delays are presented to show the effe... [more]

Maximum Power Extraction from Wind Turbines Using a Fault-Tolerant Fractional-Order Nonsingular Terminal Sliding Mode Controller
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault tolerant control, fractional nonsingular terminal sliding mode control, maximum power extraction, wind turbine
This work presents a nonlinear control approach to maximise the power extraction of wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) operating below their rated wind speeds. Due to nonlinearities associated with the dynamics of WECSs, the stochastic nature of wind, and the inevitable presence of faults in practice, developing reliable fault-tolerant control strategies to guarantee maximum power production of WECSs has always been considered important. A fault-tolerant fractional-order nonsingular terminal sliding mode control (FNTSMC) strategy to maximize the captured power of wind turbines (WT) subjected to actuator faults is developed. A nonsingular terminal sliding surface is proposed to ensure fast finite-time convergence, whereas the incorporation of fractional calculus in the controller enhances the convergence speed of system states and simultaneously suppresses chattering, resulting in extracted power maximisation by precisely tracking the optimum rotor speed. Closed-loop stability is an... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ({mathfrak{D}})-decomposition technique, boost converter, cascaded converters, PI voltage compensator, stability boundary
In this paper, the D-decomposition technique is investigated as an intuitive method for finding the non-linear trajectories of PI-compensator gains. The trajectories reflect the desired dynamic properties at a system level specified by the gain and the phase margin (GMPM) in the frequency domain. They are presented as parametric curves in the proportional and the integral gains coordinates in form of KI=f(KP) functions. The curves are inscribed into global stability boundaries (GSB). The corresponding Nyquist plots are included for comparison. The analysis is based on a system consisting of two serial-connected boost converters. Each converter has its input filter. The major parasitic components of the system are taken into account during the mathematical and simulation modelling. The control circuit time delays and non-linear semiconductors characteristics are also included. A complete set of practically useful system-level transfer functions in form of mathematical formulas is includ... [more]

Air-Gap Flux Oriented Vector Control Based on Reduced-Order Flux Observer for EESM
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electrically excited synchronous motor, first-order difference method, parameter variation, reduced order flux observer
Electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) has the characteristics of high order, nonlinear and strong coupling, so it is difficult to be controlled. However, it has the advantages of adjustable power factor, high efficiency, and high precision torque control, so it is widely used in high-power applications. The accuracy of a flux observer influences the speed control system of EESM. Based on state observer in modern control theory and electrical excitation synchronous machine state equation, a reduced-order flux observer is designed. Using the first-order difference method and forward bilinear transformation method, the reduced-order flux observer is discrete, and the stability of the motor system is analyzed. The analysis shows that the stability of the system using the bilinear transformation method is better than that using the first order forward difference method. In motor operation, motor parameters will be affected by the factors of temperature, magnetic saturation, and moto... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hydrogen and fuel, leaching, salt caverns, storage facilities, water jet
For the storage of hydrocarbons, hydrogen, or other products, underground caverns left over from the exploitation of salt deposits, or made specifically for this purpose, are successfully used. This article analyses the effectiveness of currently used well-leaching technologies in terms of the possibility of increasing the speed of obtaining industrial brine, better control of the shape of the created cavern, and, as a result, a shorter production time. An innovative solution was proposed, which consisted of creating appropriate niches in the walls of the leach well using the high-pressure hydrojet technique, just before the start of the sump leaching. A series of numerical simulations of the technologies were performed for various combinations of niche locations along the well, determining the successive phases of the formation of the cavern space at individual stages and the brine concentration increments for the two assumed technology scenarios. Load Sharing Scheme Incorporating Power Security Margins for Parallel Operation of Voltage Source Inverters
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC microgrid, distributed energy resources, droop control, power frame transformation (PFT), power sharing, transient stability, virtual synchronous machine (VSM), voltage source inverter (VSI)
The interconnection of distributed energy resources (DERs) in microgrids (MGs) operating in both islanded and grid-connected modes require coordinated control strategies. DERs are interfaced with voltage source inverters (VSIs) enabling interconnection. This paper proposes a load demand sharing scheme for the parallel operation of VSIs in an islanded voltage source inverter-based microgrid (VSI-MG). The ride-through capability of a heavily loaded VSI-MG, where some of the VSIs are fully loaded due to the occurrence of an event is investigated. In developing analytical equations to model the VSI, the concept of virtual synchronous machines (VSM) is applied to enable the VSI mimic the inertia effect of synchronous machines. A power frame transformation (PFT) that takes the line ratios of the MG network into account is also incorporated to yield satisfactory transient responses of both network frequency and bus voltages in the MG network. A Jacobian-based method is then developed to take... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: load frequency control, Lyapunov stability theory, stability analysis, time-varying delays
The stability problem for load frequency control (LFC) of power systems with two time-varying communication delays is studied in this paper. The one-area and two-area LFC systems are considered, respectively, which are modeled as corresponding linear systems with additive time-varying delays. An improved stability criterion is proposed via a modified Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF) approach. Firstly, an augmented LKF consisting of delay-dependent matrices and some single-integral items containing time-varying delay information in two different delay subintervals is constructed, which makes full use of the coupling information between the system states and time-varying delays. Secondly, the novel negative definite inequality equivalent transformation lemma is used to transform the nonlinear inequality to the linear matrix inequality (LMI) equivalently, which can be easily solved by the MATLAB LMI-Toolbox. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to show the improvement of the... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: buck converter, nonlinear PID controller, set-point regulation, simulation results
In this paper, we present a nonlinear PID controller based on saturation functions with variable parameters in order to regulate the output voltage of a buck converter in the presence of changes in the input voltage. The main feature of the proposed controller is to bound the control input with a variable parameter to avoid the windup effect generated by the combination of the integral control action and some operation conditions. The main advantages of the proposed nonlinear PID controller are its low computing cost and the simple tuning task to implement the control strategy in an embedded system. The acceptable behavior of the closed-loop system is presented through the simulation and experimental results.

This paper aims to present an innovative approach based on two newly developed Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methods: COMET combined with TOPSIS and SPOTIS, which could be the basis for a decision support system (DSS) in the problem of selecting solar panels. Solar energy is one of the most promising and environmentally friendly energy sources because of the enormous potential of directly converting available solar radiation everywhere into electricity. Furthermore, ever-lower prices for photovoltaic systems make solar electricity more competitive with power from conventional energy sources, increasing interest in solar panels among companies and households. This fact generates the need for a user-friendly, objective, fully automated DSS to support the multi-criteria selection of solar panels. Both MCDM methods chosen for this purpose are rank-reversal-free and precise. First, the objective entropy weighting method was applied for determining criteria weights. Final rankings we... [more]

Petroleum Reservoir Control Optimization with the Use of the Auto-Adaptive Decision Trees
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, auto-adaptive decision tree, CCS-EOR, Machine Learning, production optimization, sequential model-based algorithm configuration
The global increase in energy demand and the decreasing number of newly discovered hydrocarbon reservoirs caused by the relatively low oil price means that it is crucial to exploit existing reservoirs as efficiently as possible. Optimization of the reservoir control may increase the technical and economic efficiency of the production. In this paper, a novel algorithm that automatically determines the intelligent control maximizing the NPV of a given production process was developed. The idea is to build an auto-adaptive parameterized decision tree that replaces the arbitrarily selected limit values for the selected attributes of the decision tree with parameters. To select the optimal values of the decision tree parameters, an AI-based optimization tool called SMAC (Sequential Model-based Algorithm Configuration) was used. In each iteration, the generated control sequence is introduced into the reservoir simulator to compute the NVP, which is then utilized by the SMAC tool to vary the... [more]

Study of Energy Consumption of a Bucket Conveyor in a Jig Concentrator Plant in a Hard Coal Mine
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bucket conveyor, coal mine, control, energy consumption
The subject of the discussion is oriented toward limiting the energy consumption of the bucket conveyor used in jig concentrator plants by controlling its speed. A method of predictive control of the bucket conveyor speed is presented. It allows for reducing the energy consumption due to appropriate selection of bucket movement speed to ensure the nominal filling of buckets along the entire length of the conveyor. This approach enables limiting the idling speed of the conveyor, extend its life, and also reduce the electricity consumption of the entire system. Experimental studies, carried out at the “Sośnica” Coal Mine working facility, confirmed that the use of a predictive algorithm for controlling the bucket conveyor speed and adapting the bucket speed to the current load decreased in energy consumption n by 9.6%, with 80% of the filling conveyor.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decoupled mathematical model, nodal admittance matrix, phase coordinate method, Sen Transformer, short-circuit fault analysis
The Sen Transformer (ST) provides an economical solution for power flow control and voltage regulation. However, fault analysis and evaluation of the performance of the transmission protection system in the presence of a ST have not been investigated. Hence, a short-circuit model of the ST using the phase coordinate method is proposed in this paper.
