March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deterministic optimization, economic dispatch, mixed-integer linear programming, Model Predictive Control, multi-energy systems, self-consumption
In this work, the optimal management of the water grid belonging to a pilot agro-industrial district, based on greenhouse cultivation, is analyzed. Different water supply plants are considered in the district, some of them using renewable energies as power sources, i.e., a solar thermal desalination plant and a nanofiltration facility powered up by a photovoltaic field. Moreover, the trade with the water public utility network is also taken into account. As demanding agents, a greenhouse and an office building are contemplated. Due to the different water necessities, demand profiles, and the heterogeneous nature of the different plants considered as supplier agents, the management of the whole plant is not trivial. In this way, an algorithm based on the energy hubs approach, which takes into account economic terms and the optimal use of the available resources in its formulation, is proposed for the pilot district with a cropping area of 616 m2. Simulation results are provided in order... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: characteristic implicit method, optimization control, relative roughness, the mixed free-surface-pressurized flow, vent holes
The mixed free-surface-pressurized flow in the tailrace tunnel of a hydropower station has a great impact on the pressure, velocity, and operation stability of the power station. In the present work, a characteristic implicit method based on the upwind differencing and implicit finite difference scheme is used to solve the mixed free-surface-pressurized flow. The results of the characteristic implicit method agree well with the experimental results, which validates the accuracy of the method. Four factors that influence the amplitude of pressure fluctuation are analyzed and optimized, and the results show that the relative roughness can influence the maximum pressure in the tailrace tunnel. Additionally, the maximum pressure decreases with the increase of the tunnel’s relative roughness. When the surface relative roughness increases from 0.010 to 0.018, the maximum pressure can decrease by 4.33%. The maximum pressure in the tailrace tunnel can be effectively restrained by setting vent... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: activated sludge process, computational approach, fuzzy model-based predictive control, multivariable control, stability analysis, Takagi-Sugeno, wastewater treatment plant
This paper presents a procedure for the closed-loop stability analysis of a certain variant of the strategy called Fuzzy Model-Based Predictive Control (FMBPC), with a model of the Takagi-Sugeno type, applied to the wastewater treatment process known as the Activated Sludge Process (ASP), with the aim of simultaneously controlling the substrate concentration in the effluent (one of the main variables that should be limited according to environmental legislations) and the biomass concentration in the reactor. This case study was chosen both for its environmental relevance and for special process characteristics that are of great interest in the field of nonlinear control, such as strong nonlinearity, multivariable nature, and its complex dynamics, a consequence of its biological nature. The stability analysis, both of fuzzy systems (FS) and the very diverse existing strategies of nonlinear predictive control (NLMPC), is in general a mathematically laborious task and difficult to general... Improved Continuous-Cycling Method for PID Autotuning
Kyeong Hoon Kim, Jeong Eun Bae, Syng Chul Chu, Su Whan Sung
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: autotuning, continuous-cycling, disturbance, frequency response, harmonics, phase angle
An improved continuous-cycling method is proposed for the autotuning of the proportional−integral−derivative (PID) controller. The proposed method can identify the frequency response of the process at a preset phase angle without a modeling error. Moreover, it provides an exact frequency response even if a static disturbance is present. The proposed method is an improved version of the continuous-cycling method. The gain of the proportional controller in the continuous-cycling method is updated to obtain the continuous-cycling status automatically. To guarantee the preset phase angle of the frequency response, we place a phase shifter in the form of a time delay after the proportional controller. The results of simulation and experimental studies show that the proposed method can provide an exact frequency response even under static disturbance conditions and can be applied to real processes.

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion, heating value, microwave pretreatment, peat, pellets, reactivity, thermal decomposition, wheat straw, wood
The objective of the study was to investigate a more effective use of commercially available biomass pellets (wheat straw, wood, peat) using microwave pretreatment to improve heat production. Pellets were pretreated using the originally designed microwave torrefaction device. The effects of microwave (mw) pretreatment were quantified, providing measurements of the weight loss and elemental composition of pellets and estimating the effect of mw pretreatment on their porosity, surface area and calorific values at pretreatment temperatures of T = 448−553 K. Obtained results show that the highest structural variations and elemental composition during mw pretreatment were obtained for wheat straw pellets, with an increase in reactivity, a decreasing in the duration of the thermal decomposition by about 40% and an increase in the yield of combustible volatiles. Increased reactivity of pretreated pellets enhanced the ignition and burnout of volatiles, decreasing the duration of the burnout of... [more]

Keywords: coupling, dead time, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) industrial process, radial basis function (RBF) network, reinforcement learning, self-tuning control
Proportional−integral−derivative (PID) control remains the primary choice for industrial process control problems. However, owing to the increased complexity and precision requirement of current industrial processes, a conventional PID controller may provide only unsatisfactory performance, or the determination of PID gains may become quite difficult. To address these issues, studies have suggested the use of reinforcement learning in combination with PID control laws. The present study aims to extend this idea to the control of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) process that suffers from both physical coupling between inputs and a long input/output lag. We specifically target a thin film production process as an example of such a MIMO process and propose a self-tuning two-degree-of-freedom PI controller for the film thickness control problem. Theoretically, the self-tuning functionality of the proposed control system is based on the actor-critic reinforcement learning algorithm.... [more]
A Modified 2-DOF Control Framework and GA Based Intelligent Tuning of PID Controllers
Gun-Baek So
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: disturbance rejection, first-order processes with time delay model, Genetic Algorithm, PID controller, set-point weighting
Although a controller is well-tuned for set-point tracking, it shows poor control results for load disturbance rejection and vice versa. In this paper, a modified two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) control framework to solve this problem is proposed, and an optimal tuning method for the pa-rameters of each proportional integral derivative (PID) controller is discussed. The unique feature of the proposed scheme is that a feedforward controller is embedded in the parallel control structure to improve set-point tracking performance. This feedforward controller and the standard PID con-troller are combined to create a new set-point weighted PID controller with a set-point weighting function. Therefore, in this study, two controllers are used: a set-point weighted PID controller for set-point tracking and a conventional PID controller for load disturbance rejection. The parameters included in the two controllers are tuned separately to improve set-point tracking and load dis-turbance rejection p... [more]

Keywords: fast response thermometer, hot water storage tank, liquid temperature regulation, temperature measurement, time constant
This paper presents the medium temperature monitoring system based on digital proportional−integral−derivative (PID) control. For industrial thermometers with a complex structure used for measuring the temperature of the fluid under high pressure, the accuracy of the first-order model is inadequate. A second-order differential equation was applied to describe a dynamic response of a temperature sensor placed in a heavy thermowell (industrial thermometer). The quality of the water temperature control system in the tank was assessed when measuring the water temperature with a jacketed thermocouple and a thermometer in an industrial casing. A thermometer of a new design with a small time constant was also used to measure temperature. The quality of water temperature control in the hot water storage tank was evaluated using a classic industrial thermometer and a new design thermometer. In both cases, there was a K-type sheathed thermocouple inside the thermowell. Reductions in the time con... [more]

Keywords: daylight, lighting, lighting control, occupant preferences, occupant satisfaction, photosensor, post-occupancy evaluation, survey
Daylight utilization significantly contributes to energy savings in office buildings. However, daylight integration requires careful design so as to include variations in daylight availability and maintain a balance between factors such as lighting quality and heat gain or loss. Designers with proper planning can not only improve the visual environment and create higher-quality spaces, but simultaneously minimize energy costs for buildings. The utilization of photosensors can exploit the benefits of daylighting by dimming the lighting system, so that no excessive luminous flux is produced, thus leading to energy savings as well as visual contentment. However, the human factor is crucial for the proper function of a lighting control system. Without its acceptance from the users, energy savings can be minimized or even negligible. The objective of this paper is to present a post-occupancy evaluation regarding occupant satisfaction and acceptance in relation to daylighting in offices equi... [more]

Keywords: control system, fuel cell hybrid railways, propulsion numerical models
In this paper, a new control strategy for a fuel cell supercapacitor tramway is tested on a real drive cycle. The control algorithm is based on the equivalent consumption minimization strategy, weighted for the vehicle passenger number. Its implementation is presented by highlighting the customization for a specific drive cycle, located in Reggio Calabria, one of the main cities of southern Italy. The heart of the paper concerns the fuel cell hybrid powertrain, where energy source and DC/DC converter models are formalized and numerically designed; in addition, all the drivetrain components are taken into account through appropriate relations. By means of the drive cycle characteristics, in terms of morphology, vehicle features, and speed, the main components are properly selected, with the aim of avoiding under- and over-sizing issues. A specific case study is analyzed, considering the passenger variation at each tramway stop. Satisfying results are achieved in the simulation campaign:... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter, control system, distributed power generation, Energy Storage, integrated secondary DC port, low-frequency current ripple
This paper proposes a control system for the single-phase Three-Ports Active Neutral- Point-Clamped (ANPC-3P) converter, which can inject a sinusoidal current into the grid, balance the neutral point voltage, and regulate the energy storage system (ESS) current with reduced low-frequency ripple. Despite other applications, ANPC-3P inverter can be used in grid-tied renewable generation to allow the simultaneous connection of a photovoltaic (PV) energy source and an ESS to the AC grid. The ESS is connected directly to the inverter circuit without any auxiliary DC-DC converter, but due to the DC bus pulsed power, it can be subjected to low-frequency current ripple. This undesired current ripple is difficult to filter and can lead to shorter battery life. A control system based on well-known controllers is analyzed and designed. Theoretical analysis is validated experimentally using a single-phase 1-kW prototype.

Keywords: anti-interference characteristics, D-STATCOM, double closed loop, linear active disturbance rejection control, principle of deviation control
The application of a distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) is the best technical means to solve the problem of reactive power compensation and harmonics. The D-STATCOM system has the characteristics of variable parameters, strong coupling, nonlinearity and multi-variability. In order to improve the speed of the dynamic tracking response and anti-disturbance capability of the D-STATCOM, the article proposes an improved Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Controller (LADRC) based on the total disturbance deviation control method. Combined with double closed-loop control, the inner loop takes the current as the state variable, and the outer loop uses the DC side output voltage as the state variable to achieve robust stability of the D-STATCOM and controller output. The simulation results show that the improved LADRC is more stable than the traditional LADRC in controlling the DC voltage waveform of the compensator, reactive current tracking and reactive power compensatio... Keywords: distributed, optimal control, parallel-connected pumps, spanning tree, speed ratio
Motivated by the importance and challenges of the energy saving problem of parallel-connected pumps in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, we propose a distributed optimal control algorithm for on-off status and flow rate set points of parallel-connected pumps in HVAC systems. The proposed algorithm consists of two parts: First, in order to process the network information, we apply the breadth first search algorithm to construct a tree for exchanging messages. Second, all nodes coordinate with each other and randomly sample the speed ratios. To our best knowledge, the algorithm proposed in this paper is the first effort to address the challenges of existing studies at the same time. The algorithm solves the pump optimization problem in a distributed manner, achieves the minimum pump energy consumption and has the convergence guarantee. Even if some of the pumps break down, the whole system can still be working and have great flexibility. Simulation experiments on... [more]

Fabiano C. Rosa, Edson Bim
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC motor drives, induction motors, non-linear systems, predictive control, robustness
Predictive controllers have been extensively studied and applied to electrical drives, mainly because they provide fast dynamic responses and are suitable for multi-variable control and non-linear systems. Many approaches perform the prediction and optimization process on-line, which requires a high computational capacity for fast dynamics, such as, for example, the control of AC electric motors. Due to the complexity of embedding constraints in controller design, which demands a high computational capacity to solve the optimization problem, off-line approaches are one of the choices to overcome this problem. However, these strategies do not deal with the inherent constraints of the drive system, which significantly simplifies the design of the controller. This paper proposes a non-linear and multi-variable predictive controller to control the speed and rotor flux of an induction motor, where the constraints are treated after the controller design. Besides dealing with the constraints... [more]

Keywords: electro-hydraulic system, rotary valve, servo valve, vibration exciter, waveform control
Electro-hydraulic excitation systems are key equipment in various industries. Electric motor driving rotary valves are mostly used in existing systems. However, due to the separate design of the driving and hydraulic parts, highly compact integration cannot be achieved by these type of systems. Moreover, investigation on the influence of relevant parameters on the system has been insufficient in previous studies. To overcome these problems, a novel full electro-hydraulic excitation system scheme as well as a parameters analysis are presented in this paper. Theoretical models of the flow areas for valve orifices of different geometric shapes are obtained, based on which an AMESim® simulation model of the system is established. The effects of the main parameters are analyzed using numerical simulations, and the coupling relationship of the parameters is revealed. The results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental studies were conducted to verif... [more]

Power quality and energy efficiency are of great importance in motor control. The motor of any medical device needs to have a smooth torque and minimal vibration in order to maximise its energy efficiency and patient comfort. Furthermore, in rotary blood pumps, excessive energy wasted due to vibration is converted into uncontrolled movement of the mechanical parts and thus could reduce the life of the motor-pump. Besides mechanical or hydraulic origin, one of the causes of vibration in any pump is torque ripple resulting from motor phase commutation. In this paper, using relevant equipment, two extreme scenarios were examined for vibration and electrical efficiency comparison due to power quality in a blood pump: one trapezoidal control with a trapezoidal phase current output; the other a field oriented control (FOC) with a non-distorted sinusoidal phase current. The test motor-pump was the Arteriovenous Fistula Eligibility (AFE) System that is used prior to haemodialysis. The trapezoi... [more]

Keywords: constant power load, current sharing, DC–DC converter, medium voltage direct current, multiple parallelly-connected converters, sliding-mode control, voltage stability
The development of powered electronic technology has made many aware of the design and control of ship power systems (SPSs), and has made medium voltage DC (MVDC) architecture the main research direction in the future. The negative impedance characteristic of constant power load (CPL) generated by the coupling of powered electronic converters will seriously affect the stability of the systems if these converters are not properly controlled. The conventional linear control method can only guarantee the small-signal stability of the system near its equilibrium point. When the operating point changes in a large range, linear control methods will be ineffective. More importantly, research for the large-signal stability of the multi-converter system with CPLs is still rarely involved. In this paper, a sliding-mode-based duty ratio controller (SMDC) is proposed for voltage regulation and current sharing of the multiple parallelly-connected DC−DC converters system loaded by CPLs. Keywords: alkali metals, DeNOx, halogens, heavy metals, SCR-NH3, sulphur compounds (SOx), Water
One of the most harmful compounds are nitrogen oxides. Currently, the common industrial method of nitrogen oxides emission control is selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR). Among all of the recognized measures, NH3-SCR is the most effective and reaches even up to 90% of NOx conversion. The presence of the catalyst provides the surface for the reaction to proceed and lowers the activation energy. The optimum temperature of the process is in the range of 150−450 °C and the majority of the commercial installations utilize vanadium oxide (V2O5) supported on titanium oxide (TiO2) in a form of anatase, wash coated on a honeycomb monolith or deposited on a plate-like structures. In order to improve the mechanical stability and chemical resistance, the system is usually promoted with tungsten oxide (WO3) or molybdenum oxide (MoO3). The efficiency of the commercial V2O5-WO3-TiO2 catalyst of NH3-SCR, can be gradually decreased with time of its utilization. Apart from the physical... [more]

Power systems are complex systems that have great importance to socio-economic development due to the fact that the entire world relies on the electric network power supply for day-to-day life. Therefore, for the stable operation of power systems, several protection and control techniques are necessary. The power system controllers should have the ability to maintain power system stability. Three important quantities that should be effectively controlled to maintain the stability of power systems are frequency, rotor angle, and voltage. The voltage control in power systems maintains the voltage and reactive power within the required limits and the power factor control enhances the efficiency of power distribution systems by improving load power factors. Among various controls, the frequency control is the most time-consuming control mechanism of power systems due to the involvement of mechanical parts. As the control algorithms of frequency stabilization deliver control signals in the... [more]

Keywords: Control HIL (CHIL), Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), Power HIL (PHIL), testing of smart grid technologies
The smart-grid era is characterized by a progressive penetration of distributed energy resources into the power systems. To ensure the safe operation of the system, it is necessary to evaluate the interactions that those devices and their associated control algorithms have between themselves and the pre-existing network. In this regard, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing approaches are a necessary step before integrating new devices into the actual network. However, HIL is a device-oriented testing approach with some limitations, particularly considering the possible impact that the device under test may have in the power system. This paper proposes the Power System Hardware-in-the-Loop (PSHIL) concept, which widens the focus from a device- to a system-oriented testing approach. Under this perspective, it is possible to evaluate holistically the impact of a given technology over the power system, considering all of its power and control components. This paper describes in detail the PS... [more]
