Performance Assessment of Data-Driven and Physical-Based Models to Predict Building Energy Demand in Model Predictive Controls
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: artificial neural network, data-driven model, energy flexibility, Model Predictive Control, physical building model
The implementation of model predictive controls (MPCs) in buildings represents an important opportunity to reduce energy consumption and to apply demand side management strategies. In order to be effective, the MPC should be provided with an accurate model that is able to forecast the actual building energy demand. To this aim, in this paper, a data-driven model realized with an artificial neural network is compared to a physical-based resistance−capacitance (RC) network in an operative MPC. The MPC was designed to minimize the total cost for the thermal demand requirements by unlocking the energy flexibility in the building envelope, on the basis of price signals. Although both models allow energy cost savings (about 16% compared to a standard set-point control), a deterioration in the prediction performance is observed when the models actually operate in the controller (the root mean square error, RMSE, for the air zone prediction is about 1 °C). However, a difference in the on-time... [more]

Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) for Energy Disaggregation Using Soft Computing Techniques
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: appliance consumptions, disaggregation methods, NILM, non-intrusive load monitoring, soft computing
Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) has become an important subject of study, since it provides benefits to both consumers and utility companies. The analysis of smart meter signals is useful for identifying consumption patterns and user behaviors, in order to make predictions and optimizations to anticipate the use of electrical appliances at home. However, the problem with this kind of analysis rests in how to isolate individual appliances from an aggregated consumption signal. In this work, we propose an unsupervised disaggregation method based on a controlled dataset obtained using smart meters in a standard household. By using soft computing techniques, the proposed methodology can identify the behavior of each of the devices from aggregated consumption records. In the approach developed in this work, it is possible to detect changes in power levels and to build a box model, consisting of a sequence of rectangles of different heights (power) and widths (time), which is highly ada... Probabilistic Microgrid Energy Management with Interval Predictions
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: interval predictions, isolated microgrid system, microgrid energy management, model predictive control (MPC), probabilistic dispatch
In this paper, we consider a probabilistic microgrid dispatch problem where the predictions of the load and the Renewable Energy Source (RES) generation are given in the form of intervals. A hybrid method combining scenario-selected optimization and reserve strategy using the Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework is proposed. Specifically, first of all, an appropriate scenario is selected by the optimizer at each optimization stage, and then the optimal scheduling and reservation of system capacity are determined based on the selected scenario and possible variations in the future as provided by the predictors. In addition, a new reserve strategy is introduced to adaptively maintain system reliability and respond to variations in the hierarchical microgrid control. Simulations are conducted to compare our proposed method with the existing robust method and the deterministic dispatch with perfect information. Results show that our proposed method significantly improves the system eff... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Model Predictive Control, packed U-cell (PUC) inverter, weighting factor autotuning
The tuning of weighting factor has been considered as the most challenging task in the implementation of multi-objective model predictive control (MPC) techniques. Thus, this paper proposes an artificial intelligence (AI)-based weighting factor autotuning in the design of a finite control set MPC (FCS-MPC) applied to a grid-tied seven-level packed U-cell (PUC7) multilevel inverter (MLI). The studied topology is capable of producing a seven-level output voltage waveform and inject sinusoidal current to the grid with high power quality while using a reduced number of components. The proposed cost function optimization algorithm ensures auto-adjustment of the weighting factor to guarantee low injected grid current total harmonic distortion (THD) at different power ratings while balancing the capacitor voltage. The optimal weighting factor value is selected at each sampling time to guarantee a stable operation of the PUC inverter with high power quality. The weighting factor selection is p... [more]

Solar+ Optimizer: A Model Predictive Control Optimization Platform for Grid Responsive Building Microgrids
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control system, demand flexibility, distributed energy resources, Model Predictive Control, Optimization, resiliency, smart buildings
With the falling costs of solar arrays and battery storage and reduced reliability of the grid due to natural disasters, small-scale local generation and storage resources are beginning to proliferate. However, very few software options exist for integrated control of building loads, batteries and other distributed energy resources. The available software solutions on the market can force customers to adopt one particular ecosystem of products, thus limiting consumer choice, and are often incapable of operating independently of the grid during blackouts. In this paper, we present the “Solar+ Optimizer” (SPO), a control platform that provides demand flexibility, resiliency and reduced utility bills, built using open-source software. SPO employs Model Predictive Control (MPC) to produce real time optimal control strategies for the building loads and the distributed energy resources on site. SPO is designed to be vendor-agnostic, protocol-independent and resilient to loss of wide-area net... [more]

Designing a Robust Controller Using SMC and Fuzzy Artificial Organic Networks for Brushed DC Motors
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: co-simulation, DC drives, educational innovation, fuzzy organic controller, higher education, Lyapunov stability, sliding mode control
Electric direct-current (DC) drives based on DC motor are extremely important in the manufacturing process, so it must be crucial to increase their performance when they are working on load disturbances or the DC motor’s parameters change. Usually, several load torque suddenly appears when electric drives are operating in a speed closed-loop, so robust controllers are required to keep the speed high-performance. One of the most well-known robust strategies is the sliding mode controller (SMC), which works under discontinue operation. This controller can handle disturbances and variations in the plant’s parameters, so the controller has robust performance. Nevertheless, it has some disadvantages (chattering). Therefore, this paper proposed a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) that includes an artificial organic network for adjusting the command signal of the SMC. The proposed controller gives a smooth signal that decrements the chattering in the SMC. The stability condition that is based on L... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy distribution, non-penetrating directional pre-split blasting, non-penetrating fracture, small coal pillar
In longwall mining of coal mines, the large deformation of small pillar retaining roadways creates difficulties for the safe and efficient retreating of the mining panel. Based on the engineering background of a small coal pillar retaining roadway in Wangzhuang coal mine, pressure relief technology for non-penetrating directional pre-splitting blasting with a deep hole ahead was proposed. The influence of the non-penetrating fracture length on the pre-splitting effect was studied by numerical simulation. The results showed that the vertical stress in the coal pillar center, the small pillar retaining roadway deformation, and the energy accumulation on the pillar decreased with an increase in the non-penetrating fracture length. The vertical stress at the working face end increased with an increase in the non-penetrating fracture length. The field application and monitoring results indicated that non-penetrating directional pre-splitting blasting could effectively control the deformatio... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy storage systems, flexible demand, heuristic approach, microgrids, Model Predictive Control, renewable energy resources, retail tariffs
The diffusion of distributed energy resources in distribution networks requires new approaches to exploit the users’ capabilities of providing ancillary services. Of particular interest will be the coordination of microgrids operating as an aggregate of demand and supply units. This work reports a model predictive control (MPC) application in microgrids for the efficient energy management of energy storage systems and photovoltaic units. The MPC minimizes the economic cost of aggregate prosumers into a prediction horizon by forecasting generation and absorption profiles. The MPC is compared in realistic conditions with a heuristic strategy that acts in a instant manner, without taking into account signals prediction. The work aims at investigating the effect that different types of energy tariffs have in enhancing the end-users’ flexibility, based on three examples of currently applied tariffs, comparing the two storage control modes. Analysis of the energy conversion, including electrical machine losses (Joule, magnetic, mechanical) and power converter losses (switching and conduction), has shown that there is an optimal combination of control variables (turn-on and conduction angles, phase current reference), which maximizes the drive efficiency. The control variables are derived from a Finite Element Analysis and parametric optimization algorithm for all of the operating points in the torque-speed plane and stored in lookup tables. The performances are evaluated with intensive numerical simulations and experimental tests with a 8/6 SRG feeding a DC resistive load for different rotational speeds. Optimization of Vehicle Braking Distance Using a Fuzzy Controller
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: anti-lock braking system, controller, fuzzy logic system, Simulation, vehicle
The paper presents the study of an anti-lock braking system (ABS) that has been complemented by a fuzzy controller. The fuzzy controller was used to improve the braking performance of the vehicle, particularly in critical situations, for example, when braking a vehicle on wet road. The controller for the ABS was designed in the MATLAB/Simulink program. The designed controller was simulated on a medium-size vehicle model. During testing, three braking systems were simulated on the vehicle model. We compared the performance of a braking system without an ABS, a system with a threshold-based conventional ABS, and a braking system with the proposed ABS with a fuzzy controller. These three braking systems were simulation tested during braking the vehicle on a dry straight road and on a road with combined road adhesion. A maneuverability test was conducted, where the vehicle had to avoid an obstacle while braking. The results of each test are provided at the end of the paper.

Keywords: converter control, flyback, LED lamp, power factor correction, primary sensing regulation, solid-state lighting, Total Harmonic Distortion
Nowadays, LED lamps have become a widespread solution in different lighting systems due to their high brightness, efficiency, long lifespan, high reliability and environmental friendliness. The choice of a proper LED driver circuit plays an important role, especially in terms of power quality. In fact, the driver controls its own input current in addition to the LED output current, thus it must guarantee a high power factor. Among the various LED drivers available on the market, the quasi-resonant (QR) flyback topology shows interesting benefits. This paper aims at investigating and analyzing the different issues related to the input current distortion in a QR flyback LED driver. Several effects, such as the distortion caused by the ringing current, crossover distortion due to transformer leakage inductance and crossover distortion due to the input storage capacitor have been experimentally reported. These effects, not previously studied for a high power factor (Hi-PF) QR flyback, have... [more]

Keywords: calculated energy use, low-energy schools, user-related parameters
Literature and experience show that there are large discrepancies between the calculated and measured building energy usages, where user-related parameters are significant factors with regard to energy use in low-energy buildings. Furthermore, the difficulties encountered when quantifying these parameters compound these discrepancies. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bandgap voltage reference, implantable biomedical, inductive link, line regulation, wireless power telemetry
The robustness of the reference circuit in a wide range of supply voltages is crucial in implanted devices. Conventional reference circuits have demonstrated a weak performance over wide supply ranges. Channel-length modulation in the transistors causes the circuit to be sensitive to power supply variation. To solve this inherent problem, this paper proposes a new output-voltage-line-regulation controller circuit. When a variation occurs in the power supply, the controller promptly responds to the supply deviation and removes unwanted current in the output path of the reference circuit. The proposed circuit was implemented in a 0.35-μm SK Hynix CMOS standard process. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed reference circuit could generate a reference voltage of 0.895 V under a power supply voltage of 3.3 V, line regulation of 1.85 mV/V in the supply range of 2.3 to 5 V, maximum power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of −54 dB, and temperature coefficient of 11.9 ppm/°C in... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid-connected application, multilevel inverter, unbalanced grid voltage
This paper explores the feasibility of multilevel dual-active bridge-inverter (DABMI) applications for grid-connected applications of a modern Model of Predictive Direct Power Control (MPDPC) based on the conservative power theory (CPT). In the case of unbalanced grid voltages, the objective of the study is to promote continued active and reactive energy in MPDPC without reducing efficiency such as transient response and current harmonics. The nature of the instantaneous p-q theory permits only one out of three control targets to be fulfilled. The proposed control approached directly regulates the instantaneous active and reactive power to achieve three particular control objectives namely sinusoidal and symmetrical grid current, cancelling twice of fundamental grid frequency reactive power ripples, and removing twice grid frequency active power ripple. This paper studies the grid-synchronization problem of three-phase system. Second-order adaptive filters are a popular tool for grid-synchronization. In this context, reduced-order generalized integrator has attracted some attention in recent time. Keywords: economic analysis, integrated ground source heat pumps, outdoor reset controls, shared ground loop, waste heat recovery
An integrated geothermal system in which heat pumps for air conditioning and hot water both share the same ground loop was proposed in our previous study. Although this system produced electricity savings of 15% compared to a conventional system in which the two heat pumps operated on their own ground loop, practical requirements regarding further lowering the operation cost of the integrated geothermal system and the possibility of the energy savings being low during winter initiated further investigation into potential energy conservation measures at no initial cost increase, if possible. Outdoor reset control for hot water supply and sequential heat pump operation, both of which could be included at no extra cost, were subsequently targeted as potential measures for greater electricity savings and economic feasibility. When these measures were incorporated into the integrated geothermal system, electricity savings of approximately 25% during the heating season compared to the conven... [more]

Keywords: distributed maximum power point tracking, mismatching, PV emulator
The Distributed Maximum Power Point Tracking (DMPPT) approach is a promising solution to improve the energetic performance of mismatched PhotoVoltaic (PV) systems. However, there are still several factors that can reduce DMPPT energy efficiency, including atmospheric conditions, the efficiency of the power stage, constraints imposed by the topology, the finite rating of silicon devices, and the nonoptimal value of string voltage. In order to fully explore the advantages offered by the above solution, the implementation of a Boost based DMPPT emulator is of primary concern, especially if it behaves as a controlled voltage or current source. The repeatability of experimental tests, the tighter control of climatic conditions, the closing of the gap between the physical dimensions of a PV array and the space available in a university lab, the simplicity with which new algorithms can be tested, and the low maintenance costs are just some of the benefits offered by an emulator.
