Feedback Control Strategy for Transient Stability Application
Samuel T. Ojetola, Josh Wold, Daniel Trudnowski
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Storage, power system control, power system stability, transient analysis, wide area measurements
Power systems are subjected to a wide range of disturbances during daily operations. Severe disturbances, such as a loss of a large generator, a three-phase bolted fault on a generator bus, or a loss of a transmission line, can lead to the loss of synchronism of a generator or group of generators. The ability of a power system to maintain synchronism during the few seconds after being subjected to a severe disturbance is known as transient stability. Most of the modern methods of controlling transient stability involve special protection schemes or remedial action schemes. These special protection schemes sense predetermined system conditions and take corrective actions, such as generator tripping or generation re-dispatch, in real time to maintain transient stability. Another method is the use of a real-time feedback control system to modulate the output of an actuator in response to a signal. This paper provides a fundamental evaluation of the use of feedback control strategies to im... [more]
Circulating Current Control of Phase-Shifted Carrier-Based Modular Multilevel Converter Fed by Fuel Cell Employing Fuzzy Logic Control Technique
Murthy Priya, Pathipooranam Ponnambalam
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arm current and circulating current control, fuzzy logic control (FLC), hardware in the loop (HIL), modular multilevel converter (MMC), proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), sub-module (SM) capacitor voltage
The contribution of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) in integrating non-conventional energy sources into the grid is significant; the integration of fuel cells with distributed energy sources is especially prominent as they provide a constant voltage and current for constant load applications. Still, there is a high demand for a high-quality power conditioning unit since there is an occurrence of frequent power spikes. Further, the circulating current (CC) in phase legs is an inherent phenomenon of MMC that must be mitigated. Hence, this article proposed an MMC incorporating a fuzzy logic controller (FLC)-based technique to control the circulating currents. The fuzzy controller effectively reduced the harmonics of the CC in the dc-link system. In addition, phase-shifted carrier (PSC) modulation was employed for the MMC to improve the capacitor voltage balancing to maintain the constant input voltage. Moreover, a mathematical analysis of PSC modulation for MMC was performed to ide... [more]

Keywords: condition-based monitoring, diagnosis, Fault Detection, infrared thermography, non-destructive
Condition-based monitoring (CBM) has emerged as a critical instrument for lowering the cost of unplanned operations while also improving the efficacy, execution, and dependability of tools. Thermal abnormalities can be thoroughly examined using thermography for condition monitoring. Thanks to the advent of high-resolution infrared cameras, researchers are paying more attention to thermography as a non-contact approach for monitoring the temperature rise of objects and as a technique in great experiments to analyze processes thermally. It also allows for the early identification of weaknesses and failures in equipment while it is in use, decreasing system downtime, catastrophic failure, and maintenance expenses. In many applications, the usage of IRT as a condition monitoring approach has steadily increased during the previous three decades. Infrared cameras are steadily finding use in research and development, in addition to their routine use in condition monitoring and preventative ma... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbonate platform, microfacies diversity, mound-shoal body, Precambrian gasfield, Sichuan Basin, strike-slip fault
The largest Precambrian gasfield in China has been found from the Ediacaran (Sinian) carbonates in the central Sichuan Basin. The deep ancient reservoirs were generally attributed to the high-energy mound-shoal body in the carbonate platform. However, there is still little understanding on the distribution of the mound-shoal bodies that hampers further gas exploitation from the deep subsurface. Based on the seismic data, a large strike-slip fault system was identified by new 3D seismic data in the central Sichuan Basin. Further, it was found that the strike-slip fault had some effects on the mound-shoal bodies of the Ediacaran Dengying Formation. First, the platform margin was divided by strike-slip faults into three distinct segments to show two weak-rimmed margins and one interbedded rimmed margin. Second, the platform margin could be offset or migrated with the strike-slip faults. Third, there is varied margin thickness across the strike-slip fault zone. In the inner platform, more... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Bohai bay basin, complex fault block oilfield, diagenesis, reservoir quality, sedimentary components
Continental faulted basins are widely distributed in eastern China. Many of these basins, in which the faults block oil and gas reservoirs, have been explored. The heterogeneity of the reservoirs in fault block is very strong, shich restricts the further efficient development of these kinds of oil and gas fields. In this study, porosity and permeability tests, the use of thin sections of rock, mercury injection experiment and CT scan were used to investigate reservoir quality characteristics and control factors. The results showed that the content of quartz, feldspar, and debris in rock had a significant control function on the quality of the reservoir. Reservoir performance improved with increase of quartz and feldspar content, and worsened with increase of debris content. Taking the Ek1 reservoir in the Wang Guantun area as the specific research object, we developed the following understanding. On the one hand, the main compaction in the study area was mechanical compaction. When the... [more]

Keywords: inverter interfaced distributed generation (IIDG), sliding mode control (SMC), super-twisting algorithm (STALG), super-twisting control (STC), virtual inertia emulation, virtual synchronous generator (VSG)
The significant proliferation of renewable resources, primarily inverter interfaced distributed generation (IIDG) in the utility grid, leads to a dearth of overall inertia. Subsequently, the system illustrates more frequency nadir and a steeper frequency response. This may degrade the dynamic frequency stability of the overall system. Further, virtual inertia has been synthetically developed in IIDG, which is known as a virtual synchronous generator (VSG). In this work, a novel STO-STC-based controller has been developed, which offers flexible inertia following system disturbance. The controller is based on the super-twisting algorithm (STA), which is a further advancement in the conventional sliding mode control (SMC), and has been incorporated in the control loop of the VSG. In this scheme, two steps have been implemented, where the first one is to categorize all states of the system using a super-twisting observer (STO) and further, it is required to converge essential states very q... March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decarbonisation, decision support systems, demand response, renewable energy sources, smart technological solutions
The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources creates a challenge for the stability of current power systems due to their intermittent and stochastic nature. This paper presents the field results of an efficient demand response solution for controlling and adjusting the electric demand of buildings in an energy district through the activation of their thermal mass while respecting the occupants’ thermal comfort constraints. This multilevel control approach aims to support grid flexibility during peak times by constraining the energy exchange with the grid and increasing the self-consumption of the district. The results show a great potential for increasing the self-consumption up to 37% for offices, as well as improving the indoor environment, based on real data collected from a case study in Greece.

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cascade multilevel inverter, minimize the number of switches, new single-phase inverter, nine-level inverter, PV system, THD
To support the grid system with high power quality from photovoltaics (PVs) and reduce the partial shading condition (PSC) effect of the PV system, as well as the mismatch power issue, in this study, we present a simple single-phase, nine-level cascade inverter architecture for photovoltaic (PV) systems with a minimum number of power components and passive parts. This reduction in the number of switches decreases the switching losses and the number of driving circuits, which causes a reduction in the complexity of the control circuit and hence reduces the cost and size. The suggested inverter shows a lower output voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) and unity power factor. In addition, this inverter’s control and switching techniques are far simpler than those of recently published designs. To evaluate the performance of the proposed inverter, we performed a comparison of the cascaded multilevel inverter (CMLI) topology, which required recent cascade topologies with the same nine vo... March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: backfill, key stratum, multi-arch pier-column, strata control, surface subsidence
Owing to the shortcomings of blindness and inaccuracy when backfilling in goafs and based on the key stratum theory, we propose the “multi-arch pier-column” backfilling method. This method involves drilling holes at specific locations on the surface to inject filling and slurry materials into the goaf and separation area under the key stratum. This allows the broken gangue to be cemented to form a stone body, to improve its overall strength. This process, along with filling in the separation area under the key stratum, ensures that the key stratum does not break, forming a joint medium of “separation area filling body + backfilled pier-columns + key stratum + coal column”, which prevents new subsidence on the surface layer. Using the Gaojialiang coal mine as an example, the effects of the proposed method on controlling surface subsidence were determined using a numerical simulation based on FLAC3D simulation software. The results indicate that this method can effectively control the ke... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural network (ANN), Laguerre-based model predictive control (LMPC), model predictive control (MPC), static VAR compensator (SVC), wind energy generation unit (WEGU)
Developing control methods that have the ability to preserve the stability and optimum operation of a wind energy generation unit connected to power systems constitutes an essential area of recent research in power systems control. The present work investigates a novel control of a wind energy system connected to a power system through a static VAR compensator (SVC). This advanced control is constructed via integration between the model predictive control (MPC) and an artificial neural network (ANN) to collect all of their advantages. The conventional MPC needs a high computational effort, or it can cause difficulties in implementation. These difficulties can be eliminated by using Laguerre-based MPC (LMPC). The ANN has high performance in optimization and modeling, but it is limited in improving dynamic performance. Conversely, MPC operation improves dynamic performance. The integration between ANN and LMPC increases the ability of the Neuro-MPC (LMPC-ANN) control system to conduct sm... [more]

Keywords: electrical properties, organic shale, reservoir quality, Sichuan Basin
At the Changning block and at the Luzhou block, the genetic mechanism of low-resistivity shale and its impact on reservoir quality are currently a hot topic on a world-wide scale. Shale with resistivity lower than 20 Ω·m is widely developed at the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in the Southern Sichuan Basin, bringing a considerable challenge for reservoir prediction using the electromagnetic method. This paper discusses the genetic mechanisms and reservoir qualities of three low-resistivity shale reservoir types in the Southern Sichuan Basin (the Changning block and Luzhou block). Three primary elements controlling low-resistivity shale distribution in the Southern Sichuan Basin have been deduced: widely distributed gravity flow deposits, poor structural preservation conditions and shale graphitization caused by Emeishan basalt. Specifically, (1) the shale reservoir with a resistivity <12 Ω·m was uniformly distributed with gravity flow deposits in the Southern Sichuan Basin. High clay mi... [more]

Keywords: ADRC, closed-loop control, extended state filter, predictive ADRC
To address time delay and noise problems in control systems, in this study, we integrated an extended state filter for signal filtering into an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) system and derived an improved ADRC approach. In addition to the active anti-disturbance and active tracking estimation functions of the existing ADRC, the proposed approach also includes active filtering and active advance prediction functions, which can filter out the effect of measurement noise on system state observation while reducing the delay between the system control output and the detection of the sensor input. We verified through an evaluation in a simulation environment that the proposed approach may be expected to achieve improved control accuracy and increase the stability of closed-loop control systems.

Keywords: angle-position control, model-free adaptive control, switched reluctance motor, turn-off angle, turn-on angle
This paper studies the speed control strategy of a switched reluctance motor based on angle-position control (APC). The switched reluctance motor has three control parameters: turn-on angle, turn-off angle and voltage PWM duty cycle. This paper studies the function of the three parameters and designs the control algorithms of the parameters, respectively, which can reduce the coupling degree, simplify the control process, and realize the optimal control of the switched reluctance motor. By studying the nonlinear characteristics of the switched reluctance motor, the optimal current waveform in the effective working range of the inductor is obtained, and then a control strategy of the turn-on angle is designed to realize the ideal winding current waveform. According to the torque characteristics of the motor, taking the coincidence of the freewheeling zero point and the position angle at the end of the maximum inductance interval as the control target, a control strategy for the turn-off... Keywords: Aspen Plus dynamics, Model Predictive Control, post-combustion capture CO2 system, subspace identification
The absorption process of CO2 by ethanolamine solution is essentially a dynamic system, which is greatly affected by the power plant startup and flue gas load changes. Hence, studying the optimal control of the CO2 chemical capture process has always been an important part in academic fields. Model predictive control (MPC) is a very effective control strategy used for such process, but the most intractable problem is the lack of accurate and effective model. In this work, Aspen Plus and Aspen Plus Dynamics are used to establish the process of monoethanolamine (MEA) absorption of CO2 related models based on subspace identification. The nonlinear distribution of the system under steady-state operation is analyzed. Dynamic tests were carried out to understand the dynamic characteristics of the system under variable operating conditions. Systematic subspace identification on open-loop experimental data was performed. We designed a model predictive controller based on the identified model c... [more]

Keywords: ABE fermentation, anaerobic condition creation, Arthrobacter sp., biobutanol, Clostridium beijerinckii, sodium dithionite
Biobutanol can be produced by Clostridia via an acetone−butanol−ethanol (ABE) fermentation under strictly anaerobic conditions. Oxygen-free nitrogen (OFN) gas is typically used to create anaerobic conditions for ABE fermentations. However, this method is not appropriate for large-scale fermentations as it is quite costly. The aim of this work was to study the feasibility of butanol production from sweet sorghum juice (SSJ) by Clostridium beijerinckii TISTR 1461 using various methods to create anaerobic conditions, i.e., growth of a strictly aerobic bacterium, an Arthrobacter sp., under different conditions and a chemical method using sodium dithionite (SDTN) to consume residual oxygen. SSJ containing 60 g/L of total sugar supplemented with 1.27 g/L of (NH4)2SO4 was used as a substrate for butanol production. The results showed that 0.25 mM SDTN could create anaerobic conditions, but in this case, C.beijerinckii TISTR 1461 could produce butanol at a concentration (PB) of only 8.51 g/L w... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: frequency domain specifications, multivariable control, PID control, process control
Multiloop proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers are widely used for controlling multivariable processes due to their understandability, simplicity and other practical advantages. The main difficulty of the methodologies using this approach is the fact that the controllers of different loops interact each other. Thus, the knowledge of the controllers in the other loops is necessary for the evaluation of one loop. This work proposes an iterative design methodology of multiloop PID controllers for stable multivariable systems. The controllers in each step are tuned using single-input single-output (SISO) methods for the corresponding effective open loop process (EOP), which considers the interaction of the other loops closed with the controllers of the previous step. The methodology uses a frequency response matrix representation of the system to avoid process approximations in the case of elements with time delays or complicated EOPs. Consequently, different robustness margi... [more]

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) with suboptimal pharmacokinetic properties may require formulation into nanoparticles. In addition to the quality of the excipients, production parameters are crucial for producing nanoparticles which reliably deliver APIs to their target. Microfluidic platforms promise increased control over the formulation process due to the decreased degrees of freedom at the micro- and nanoscale. Publications about these platforms usually provide only limited information about the soft- and hardware required to integrate the microfluidic chip seamlessly into an experimental set-up. We describe a modular, low-budget prototype for microfluidic mixing in detail. The prototype consists of four modules. The control module is a raspberry pi executing customizable python scripts to control the syringe pumps and the fraction collector. The feeding module consists of up to three commercially available, programable syringe pumps. The formulation module can be any macro... [more]

Keywords: causality, conditional mutual information, fault detection and diagnosis, feature selection, real oil and gas process facility, variable selection
Variable selection constitutes an essential step to reduce dimensionality and improve performance of fault detection and diagnosis in large scale industrial processes. For this reason, in this paper, variable selection approaches based on causality are proposed and compared, in terms of model adjustment of available data and fault detection performance, with several other filter-based, wrapper-based, and embedded-based variable selection methods. These approaches are applied in a simulated benchmark case and an actual oil and gas industrial case considering four different learning models. The experimental results show that obtained models presented better performance during the fault detection stage when variable selection procedures based on causality were used for purpose of model building.

Keywords: children, double fortification, fermented milk, iron and zinc, stunting, synbiotic
Stunting is one of the public health problems that has yet to be solved in Indonesia. This study developed synbiotic fermented milk with iron and zinc fortification that was then tested in a clinical setting. The product was made from skimmed milk and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum. A sample of 94 stunted children under five years old were randomly assigned to intervention or control groups. The intervention group received double-fortified synbiotic milk, while the control group drank non-fortified milk. After three months, the number of normal children in both groups, according to weight- or height-for-age z-score category, was found to be increasing. However, the difference between the two groups was not significant (p > 0.05). The study suggests that fermented milk may have a good effect on child growth. Further research is needed to deepen the potency of synbiotic fermented milk for stunted children.

Keywords: endoxylanase, laccase, lignocellulosic residues, manganese peroxidase, solid-state fermentation
Solid-state fermentation requires the development of more efficient cultivation systems for its industrial application. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of aeration regime on the production of biomass and several lignocellulolytic enzymes (laccase, manganese peroxidase, endoxylanase, β-glucosidase, and total cellulases) by Trametes versicolor in a novel fixed-bed solid-state pilot-scale bioreactor. Three regimes were assessed: natural convection, low aeration level (10 min every 6 h at 10 L/h air flowrate), and high aeration level (1 h every 6 h at 10 L/h air flowrate). The mushroom was grown on a medium based on lignocellulosic residues. The design of the bioreactor, as well as the control of aeration, humidity, and temperature of the beds, allowed T. versicolor to grow properly on the medium, reaching a maximum biomass production of 204.7 mg/g dry solid (ds). The influence that aeration regime had on the production of lignocellulolytic enzymes was determined. Low... [more]

Keywords: clustering, coalitional control, distributed control, drinking water networks (DWNs), modular control, water systems
This article presents a method based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) for designing a modular feedback control law, whose synthesis guarantees the system stability, while switching to different network topologies. Such stability is achieved by means of a common Lyapunov function to all network admissible configurations. Several mechanisms to relieve the computational burden of this methodology in large-scale systems are also presented. To assess its applicability, the modular controller is tested on a real case study, namely the Barcelona drinking water network (DWN), and its performance is compared with that of other control strategies, showing the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Thermal Control Processes by Deterministic and Network-Based Models for Energy Use and Control Accuracy in a Building Space

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building space, design strategy, deterministic model, energy use, human comfort, network-based model
Various control approaches for building thermal controls have been studied to improve the energy use which determines a large part of the spatial thermal quality. This research compares the performance of deterministic models and a network-based model to examine the aspects of both energy consumption and thermal comfort. The single-switch deterministic model immediately responds to indoor thermal conditions, but the network-based model sends better-fit signals derived from learned data reflecting seven different climate conditions. As a result, the network-based model improves the thermal comfort level by about 6.1% to 9.4% and the energy efficiency by about 1.8% to 39.5% as compared to a thermostat and a fuzzy model. In the case of a specific weather condition, it can be confirmed that the process of finding efficient control values based on the network-based learning algorithm is more efficient than the conventional deterministic models.

Keywords: process control, soft sensors, sour water, stripping
For the sour water strippers in petroleum refinery plants, three prediction models were developed first, including the estimators of sour water feed concentrations using convenient online measurements, the minimum reboiler duty and the corresponding internal temperature at a specific location (Tstage,29). Feedforward control schemes were developed based on these prediction models. Four categories of control schemes, including feedforward, feedback, feedback with external reset, and feedforward-feedback, were proposed and evaluated by the rigorous dynamic simulation model of the sour water stripper for their dynamic responses to the sour water feed stream disturbances. The comparison of control performance, in terms of the settling time, integrated absolute error (IAE) of the NH3 concentration of the stripped sour water and IAE of the specific reboiler duty, reveals that FFT (feedforward control of Tstage,29) and FBA-DT3 (feedback control with 3 min concentration measurement delay) are...
