With the aim to solve the problem related to the power chattering and anti-disturbance performance of a photovoltaic (PV) inverter in master−slave-organized islanded microgrid, an anti-disturbance finite-time adaptive sliding mode backstepping (DFA-SMB) controller is designed in this paper. First, the topology and the second-order dynamic model of PV inverter are established based on constant DC voltage and constant reactive power control method. Subsequently, the backstepping method is adopted to perform the control of a high-order system. Moreover, a second-order sliding mode differentiator is used to realize the function of command-filter, solving the differential expansion problem caused by the derivation of virtual controller. Besides, the terminal sliding mode control (TSMC) is introduced into the q-axis controller and d-axis inner loop controller, increasing the robustness and reducing the convergence time of the system. Adaptive control and disturbance-observer (DO) are used to... [more]

A discrete vortex method is implemented with a hybrid control technique of vortex shedding to solve the problem of the two-dimensional flow past a slightly rough circular cylinder in the vicinity of a moving wall. In the present approach, the passive control technique is inspired on the fundamental principle of surface roughness, promoting modifications on the cylinder geometry to affect the vortex shedding formation. A relative roughness size of ε*/d* = 0.001 (ε* is the average roughness and d* is the outer cylinder diameter) is chosen for the test cases. On the other hand, the active control technique uses a wall plane, which runs at the same speed as the free stream velocity to contribute with external energy affecting the fluid flow. The gap-to-diameter varies in the range from h*/d* = 0.05 to 0.80 (h* is the gap between the moving wall and the cylinder bottom). A detailed account of the time history of pressure distributions, simultaneously investigated with the time evolution of... [more]
Fault-Structure-Based Active Fault Diagnosis: A Geometric Observer Approach
Zhao Zhang, Xiao He
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active fault diagnosis, auxiliary input, fault structure, geometric approach, incipient faults
Fault diagnosis techniques can be classified into passive and active types. Passive approaches only utilize the original input and output signals of the system. Because of the small amplitudes, the characteristics of incipient faults are not fully represented in the data of the system, so it is difficult to detect incipient faults by passive fault diagnosis techniques. In contrast, active methods can design auxiliary signals for specific faults and inject them into the system to improve fault diagnosis performance. Therefore, active fault diagnosis techniques are utilized in this article to detect and isolate incipient faults based on the fault structure. A new framework based on observer approach for active fault diagnosis is proposed and the geometric approach based fault diagnosis observer is introduced to active fault diagnosis for the first time. Based on the dynamic equations of residuals, auxiliary signals are designed to enhance the diagnosis performance for incipient faults th... [more]

Keywords: coyote optimization algorithm, Energy Efficiency, simulation-based optimization, water pumping
In this study, a simulation-based coyote optimization algorithm (COA) to identify the gains of PI to ameliorate the water-pumping system performance fed from the photovoltaic system is presented. The aim is to develop a stand-alone water-pumping system powered by solar energy, i.e., without the need of electric power from the utility grid. The voltage of the DC bus was adopted as a good candidate to guarantee the extraction of the maximum power under partial shading conditions. In such a system, two proportional-integral (PI) controllers, at least, are necessary. The adjustment of (Proportional-Integral) controllers are always carried out by classical and tiresome trials and errors techniques which becomes a hard task and time-consuming. In order to overcome this problem, an optimization problem was reformulated and modeled under functional time-domain constraints, aiming at tuning these decision variables. For achieving the desired operational characteristics of the PV water-pumping s... [more]

Keywords: asphaltenes, dispersed catalyst, slurry-phase hydrocracking, vacuum residue
Non-catalytic and catalytic hydrocracking of C5-isolated asphaltene and its subfractions were performed in batch and semi-batch reactors at various temperatures. Catalyst and H2 played an important role in the hydrocracking of asphaltenes. In the batch system, the catalyst enhanced asphaltene conversion to light liquid products and suppressed coke formation. The coke formation was controlled at a low reaction temperature, but the reaction rate was too low. Light liquid products were also formed at the beginning of the reaction even at high temperatures, but the coke formation was predominant as the reaction time went on due to the decrease in H2 amount in the reactor. To solve these problems, H2 was continuously supplied during the reaction using the semi-batch system. Sufficient supply of H2 improved the conversion of asphaltenes to light liquid products while inhibiting the coke formation. The lightest asphaltene fraction was easily cracked into light products by inhibiting the coke... [more]

Keywords: canonical variate analysis, condition monitoring, Machine Learning, multivariate methods, performance estimation, pharmaceutical plant
Granulators play a key role in many pharmaceutical processes because they are involved in the production of tablets and capsule dosage forms. Considering the characteristics of the production processes in which a granulator is involved, proper maintenance of the latter is relevant for plant safety. During the operational phase, there is a high risk of explosion, pollution, and contamination. The nature of this process also requires an in-depth examination of the time-dependence of the process variables. This study proposes the application of canonical variate analysis (CVA) to perform fault detection in a granulation process that operates under time-varying conditions. Beyond this, a different approach to the management of process non-linearities is proposed. The novelty of the study is in the application of CVA in this kind of process, because it is possible to state that the actual literature on the theme shows some limitations of CVA in such processes. The aim was to increase the ap... [more]

Keywords: DC power flow, estimation method, power flow, regulation capacity, unified power flow controller (UPFC)
As the latest generation of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices, the unified power flow controller (UPFC) has comprehensive control capability and has played an important role in modern power systems. Research on UPFC steady-state power flow regulation capability is valuable for the design and operation of UPFC projects. To analyze the UPFC regulation capability, in this paper, the interaction between the UPFC and the external system is studied and the key factors of UPFC regulation capability are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the changes in the voltage magnitude and phase angle difference of UPFC-embedded line terminals will hinder the UPFC from regulating the power flow and decrease the UPFC regulation capability. Therefore, the UPFC power flow regulation capability is not only related to the parameters of the UPFC and its installation line, but also related to grid parameters. To analyze the UPFC active power flow regulation capability in practical power grids, the r... [more]

Keywords: first-order inertial link, frequency domain analysis, LCL type filter, linear active disturbance rejection control, total disturbance differential
In wind power systems, LCL inverters have technical problems. First of all, they are non-linear systems and are no longer adapted to the superposition principle; secondly, the coupling is great; finally, it is easy to be interfered by the outside world, and the interference mainly comes from voltage fluctuations and nonlinear loads on the grid. Therefore, it is difficult to control the output result, and then the improved linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) is applied. The main improvement of the improved LADRC lies in the linear extended state observer (LESO). Introducing the total disturbance differential signal in LESO, and in order to improve the ability to suppress high-frequency noise, a series of first-order inertia link was applied. The analysis method in this article is mainly frequency domain analysis, under the condition of obtaining LADRC closed-loop transfer function and frequency band characteristics, theoretical analysis of LADRC tracking estimation abili... Keywords: energy feedback, grid power regulation, regenerative braking energy, synchronverter
Generally running with frequent braking over short distances, the urban rail transit train generates great quantities of regenerative braking energy (RBE). The RBE feedback system can effectively recycle RBE and give it back to the AC grid. However, the lack of damp and inertia of generators makes conventional PWM RBE feedback system more sensitive to power fluctuations. To address this issue, a synchronverter-based RBE feedback system of urban rail transit is designed in this paper. First, the structure of the feedback system is presented. Then, the synchronverter-based control strategy with greater flexibility and higher stability is fully discussed. Furthermore, the parameter design of the system is analyzed in detail. Finally, simulation results and experimental results are provided to show the good dynamic performance of the system. Using this synchronverter-based approach, the system supplies traction power to the traction network when the train accelerates and gives the RBE back... [more]

Keywords: advanced building controls, automatically generated heating ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) controllers, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Industry Foundation Classes (IFC)
Building Information Modeling (BIM) data are typically exchanged using the Industrial Foundation Classes (IFC) standard. An IFC-based BIM model is a container for data that is created during the design and planning phase and is therefore a rich source of information for the commissioning phase, in which building services are brought to operation. This paper examines the use of BIM data for automated generation of control strategies for energy systems, thus simplifying and accelerating the commissioning phase. We present a methodology to create control strategies of a building heating system with several variations of renewable energy systems and include both heat provisioning and a distribution system. The control goals include favoring the use of non-fossil energy, which is provided by a combination of photovoltaic system (PV), heat pump (HP) and industrial excess-heat source. Keywords: control algorithm, five-phase inverter, inverter model, space vector, state vector, two-level inverter control
The paper proposes a general description system of the five-phase two-level inverter. The two base methods are presented and discussed. The first one is based on the standard space vector transformation, while the other uses state vectors which enable the definition of the basic physical quantities of the inverter: current and voltage. The proposed notation system offers a general simplification of vector identification. It comprises a standardized proposal of notation and vector marking, which may be extremely useful for the specification of inverter states. The described notation system makes it possible to reach correlation between state and space vectors. It presents space and state vectors using the same digits. These properties suggest that the proposed notation system is a useful mathematical tool and may be really suitable in designing control algorithms. This mathematical tool was verified during simulation tests performed with the use of the Simulation Platform for Power Elec... [more]

District heating and cooling (DHC) is considered one of the most sustainable technologies to meet the heating and cooling demands of buildings in urban areas. The fifth-generation district heating and cooling (5GDHC) concept, often referred to as ambient loops, is a novel solution emerging in Europe and has become a widely discussed topic in current energy system research. 5GDHC systems operate at a temperature close to the ground and include electrically driven heat pumps and associated thermal energy storage in a building-sited energy transfer station (ETS) to satisfy user comfort. In microgrids, distributed generators that cannot be dispatched, such as a photovoltaic system, need to control their output power at the maximum power point. The fluctuation of their output power should be minimized with the support of the maximum power point tracking algorithm under the variation of ambient conditions. In this paper, a new maximum power point tracking method based on the parameters of power deviation (ΔPPV), voltage difference (ΔVPV), and duty cycle change (ΔD) is proposed for photovoltaic systems. The presented algorithm achieves the following good results: (i) when the solar radiance is fixed, the output power is stable around the maximum power point; (ii) when the solar radiance is rapidly changing, the generated power is always in the vicinity of maximum power points; (iii) the effectiveness of energy conversion is comparable to that of intelligent algorithms. Keywords: DSPACE DS1104, PEMFC, QC-HOSM, step-up converter
Fuel cells are considered as one of the most promising methods to produce electrical energy due to its high-efficiency level that reaches up to 50%, as well as high reliability with no polluting effects. However, scientists and researchers are interested more in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Thus, it has been considered as an ideal solution to many engineering applications. The main aim of this work is to keep the PEMFC operating at an adequate power point. To this end, conventional first-order sliding mode control (SMC) is used. However, the chattering phenomenon, which is caused by the SMC leads to a low control accuracy and heat loss in the energy circuits. In order to overcome these drawbacks, quasi-continuous high order sliding mode control (QC-HOSM) is proposed so as to improve the power quality and performance. The control stability is proven via the Lyapunov theory. The closed-loop system consists of a PEM fuel cell, a step-up converter, a DSPACE DS1104, SMC and... [more]

The benefits and risks associated with Volt-Var Curve (VVC) control for management of voltages in electric feeders with distributed, roof-top photovoltaic (PV) can be defined using a stochastic hosting capacity analysis methodology. Although past work showed that a PV inverter’s reactive power can improve grid voltages for large PV installations, this study adds to the past research by evaluating the control method’s impact (both good and bad) when deployed throughout the feeder within small, distributed PV systems. The stochastic hosting capacity simulation effort iterated through hundreds of load and PV generation scenarios and various control types. The simulations also tested the impact of VVCs with tampered settings to understand the potential risks associated with a cyber-attack on all of the PV inverters scattered throughout a feeder. The simulation effort found that the VVC can have an insignificant role in managing the voltage when deployed in distributed roof-top PV inverters... [more]

Keywords: cobalt (II) acetate, copper (II) acetate, inorganic crosslinking, nickle (II) acetate, polyacrylamide, polymeric gel
Crosslinkable polymers, such as polyacrylamide (PAM), are widely applied for water control in oil and gas reservoirs. Organic and inorganic crosslinkers are used to formulate a gel with PAM. Although chromium has a high level of toxicity, it has been implemented as an effective crosslinker combined with carboxylates because of the controllability of crosslinking time at low temperatures. The objective of this work was to develop greener d-metal inorganic crosslinkers based on cobalt, copper, and nickel to replace chromium for application at reservoir conditions. The obtained results showed that the gelation chemistry of the developed systems depends on the metal charge density. The gelation of PAM with d-metals depends on pH and temperature for low- and high-charge density, respectively. Cobalt (II) acetate (CoAc) was effective at high temperatures (130−150 °C) and forms (4% CoAc + 9%PAM) stable, and strong gels at a pH > 7 with a storage modulus exceeding 4300 Pa. After the implementation of the ultra-low emissions regulation on the coal-fired power plants in China, the problem of the excessive ammonia-slipping from selective catalytic reduction (SCR) seems to be more severe. This paper analyzes the operating statistics of the coal-fired plants including 300 MW/600 MW/1000-MW units. Statistics data show that the phenomenon of the excessive ammonia-slipping is widespread. The average excessive rate is over 110%, while in the small units the value is even higher. A field test data of nine power plants showed that excessive ammonia-slipping at the outlet of SCR decreased following the flue-gas process. After most ammonia reduced by the dust collector and the wet flue-gas desulfurization (FGD), the ammonia emission at the stack was extremely low. At same time, a method based on probability distribution is proposed in this paper to describe the relationship between the NH3/NOX distribution deviation and the De−NOX efficiency/ammonia-slipping. In this paper, the simulation software EBSILON is used to simulate the reheat units, and the reheat temperature control mode is deeply explored. In the benchmark system, the influence of different load intermediate point temperature on the flue gas recirculation (FGR) is analyzed. Then, the effects of load, coal quality, excess air factor, and feed water temperature on FGR are studied under the premise of intermediate point temperature as design value, and the cause for FGR change is analyzed by comparing the cutoff bypass flue (CBF) system. The results show that under any load, the FGR decreases with the increase of the intermediate point temperature, while under low load, the change of the intermediate point temperature has a greater impact on the FGR rate. When the intermediate point temperature remains constant, the FGR plunge has an increase of load at low load and is almost unchanged at high load; the FGR rate of coal with low calorific value and high moisture content is low and... This work demonstrates an improved static and dynamic performance of a sliding mode state observer used for speed sensorless 3 phase induction motor drive employed in electric vehicles (EVs). The estimated torque is treated as a model disturbance and integrated into the state observer while the error is constrained in the sliding hyperplane. Two state observers with different disturbance handling mechanisms have been designed. Depending on, how they reject disturbances, based on their structure, their performance is studied and analyzed with respect to speed bandwidth, tracking and disturbance handling capability.
