Henok Hailemariam, Frank Wuttke
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cyclic mechanical loading, sandy soils, temperature, thermal energy storage
In this research, the cyclic mechanical behavior of two heat storage sandy soils is experimentally studied using a cyclic thermo-mechanical triaxial device. The results of the tests, which were performed under controlled temperature conditions between 20 and 60 °C, show a significant dependence of the mechanical response of the sandy soils with the amplitude of the cyclic loading and medium temperature. The mechanical performance and accumulation of plastic strains of the soils with an increasing number of loading cycles are discussed in view of the intrinsic soil behavior.

Keywords: bearing fault, deep learning, demagnetization fault, fault diagnosis, PMSM
Predictive maintenance in the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is of paramount importance due to its usage in electric vehicles and other applications. Recently various deep learning techniques are applied for fault detection and identification (FDI). However, it is very hard to optimally train the deeper networks like convolutional neural network (CNN) on a relatively fewer and non-uniform experimental data of electric machines. This paper presents a deep learning-based FDI for the irreversible-demagnetization fault (IDF) and bearing fault (BF) using a new transfer learning-based pre-trained visual geometry group (VGG). A variant of ImageNet pre-trained VGG network with 16 layers is used for the classification. The vibration and the stator current signals are selected for the feature extraction using the VGG-16 network for reliable detection of faults. A confluence of vibration and current signals-based signal-to-image conversion approach is also introduced for exploiting the... [more]

Keywords: Chebyshev sphere constraint, DC-DC power converter, digital robust RST controller, parametric uncertainties
This paper presents a novel direct form to design a digital robust control using RST structure (i.e., name given because of the R, S and T polynomials computed) based on convex optimization such as Chebyshev sphere; this approach was applied to a DC-DC Buck converter. This methodology takes into account parametric uncertainties and a Chebyshev sphere constraint in order to ensure robust performance and stability of the system in the discrete domain. For this purpose, a mathematical model for the DC-DC Buck converter is presented when considering uncertainties in electrical variables, such as load resistance, inductance, capacitance, and source voltage variation, also to obtain the discrete model of the system by using the bilinear transformation. The proposed methodology is compared with two other approaches designed in a discrete domain: the classical pole placement and the robust methodology based on the Kharitonov theorem. Wide-ranging experiments are performed in order to evaluate... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
This Special Issue of Energies, “Modern Power System Dynamics, Stability and Control”, addresses the core problem of deploying novel aspects in the analysis of modern power systems as these are composed after the high penetration of distributed generation (DG) with different renewable energy sources (RES). The focus is given either on the new whole power and control system configuration or on individual cases of DG sources, power converters and other general or specific plants and devices. The problem can be tackled with different methodologies and may have several, more or less valuable and complicated solutions. The twenty-three accepted papers certainly offer a good contribution in a wide range of applications; they are extended from basic system theory perspectives, fundamental nonlinear analysis tools and novel modeling deployments to some interesting particular system and control issues.

Keywords: decomposing modulation wave, virtual space vector modulation (VSVPWM), zero-sequence component
Diode-clamped multi-level converters have DC-side capacitors in series, which will lead to the unbalance of DC-side capacitor voltage, the distortion of the output waveform, the increase of total harmonic distortion (THD), and even the damage of switching devices, which will make the system inoperable. The proposal of virtual space vector pulse-width modulation (VSVPWM) realizes the balanced control of the capacitor voltage, but when the output level of converter increases, the implementation of VSVPWM becomes very complicated, and the amount of calculation also increases greatly, thus hindering its application in the multi-level circuit. Compared with VSVPWM, the carrier-based pulse-width modulation (CBPWM) is simple to operate and easy to implement. If the equivalent relationship between CBPWM and VSVPWM can be found, the application of VSVPWM can be generalized to any level, and the advantages of VSVPWM can be fully utilized. This paper aims to study the inner relationship of VSVPWM... [more]

Keywords: controlled charging, electric vehicles, grid-side effects, photovoltaic potentials, power grid
To reduce CO2 emissions, it is necessary to cover the increasing energy demand of e-mobility with renewable energy sources. Therefore, the influence of increasing e-mobility and synergy effects between e-mobility and renewable energy sources need to be investigated. The case study presented here shows results from the analysis of grid-side and energetic synergy effects between e-mobility charged only at work and photovoltaic (PV) potentials. The basis of the grid study is a simplified cell-based grid model. Following the determination of synthetic charging profiles for e-mobility, PV potential profiles, load and production profiles, we perform load flow calculations for different scenarios and a simulation period of one year using the grid model. After the grid study, the energy analyses are carried out using four key performance indicators. The grid study shows that line overloads caused by PV production are only reduced and not avoided by increasing e-mobility and vice versa. The inc... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: disturbance resistance, frequency domain analysis, linear ADRC, linear extended state observer, photovoltaic grid-connected power generation system
Photovoltaic grid-connected power generation systems are easily affected by external factors, and their anti-interference performance is poor. For example, changes in illumination and fluctuations in the power grid affect the operation ability of the system. Linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) can extract the “summation disturbance” information from the system and eliminate the disturbance at the fastest speed by controlling the signal before it affects the final output of the system. In this paper, an improved linear ADRC based on the principle of deviation control is proposed, and the voltage outer loop is controlled by an improved LADRC. This improved LADRC takes the deviation between each state variable and its observed value as the regulation basis for each state variable of the linear extended state observer (LESO). Based on the analysis of the bode diagram in the frequency domain, it can be concluded that, compared with the unimproved LADRC, the new LADRC has bet... [more]

Keywords: auxiliary correction of the PI parameters, double fuzzy PI controller, reversible three-phase PWM converter
Aiming at the application of a reversible three-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) converter with a wide range of AC side voltage and DC side voltage, a double fuzzy proportional integral (PI) controller for voltage outer loop was proposed. The structures of the proposed controller were motivated by the problems that either the traditional PI controller or single fuzzy PI controller cannot achieve high performance in a wide range of AC and DC voltage conditions. The presented double fuzzy controller studied in this paper is a sub fuzzy controller in addition to the traditional fuzzy PI controller; in particular, the sub fuzzy controller can get the auxiliary correction of PI control parameters according to the AC side voltage and the DC side given voltage variation of PWM converter after the reasoning of the sub fuzzy controller, while the traditional fuzzy PI controller outputs the correction of PI control parameters according to the DC voltage error and its error change rate. March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal-fired power plant, energy system control, explicit model predictive control, robust model predictive control, uncertain model
Regulating performance of the main steam temperature (MST) system concerns the economy and safety of the coal-fired power plant (CFPP). This paper develops an offset-free offline robust model predictive control (RMPC) strategy for the MST system of CFPP. Zonotope-type uncertain model is utilized as the prediction model in the proposed RMPC design owing to its features of higher accuracy, compactness of representation and less complexity. An offline RMPC aiming at the system robustness and computational efficiency is then developed to maintain the desired steam temperature in case of wide operating condition change. The proposed RMPC is realized by two stages: in the first stage, the RMPC law set, which is the piecewise affine (PWA) of the MST system state is designed offline; then in the second stage, the explicit control law is selected online according to the current state. To achieve an offset-free tracking performance, a manipulated variable target observer is employed to update th... [more]

The novelty behind the research in this paper is to investigate the Super Twisting Sliding Mode Controller (ST-SMC) for efficiently injecting both active and reactive power under normal and abnormal operating conditions for a three-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system. The ST-SMC is aimed to inject sinusoidal current to the grid with low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), to avoid chattering with easy real implementation, and to enhance the quality of disturbance rejection and sensitivity to parameter variation. The test under normal conditions includes initialization, steady state behavior, dynamic behavior, and interrupting the injection of acting and reactive power while the abnormal conditions consists of voltage sag, voltage swell, frequency variation, DC-link variation, and inclusion of 5th harmonics, etc. The phase lock loop used for synchronization is based on a synchronous reference frame that works well under distorted grids and nonideal. Keywords: analytic network process, energy preferences, multi-criteria decision model, survey
Decision support techniques have a key role in investment and strategic decisions in the energy sector. As complex decision-making problems involve the simultaneous consideration of an extensive set of different factors, it is an essential part of the methodology to define, structure, and integrate the criteria. The main purpose of the study was to develop a system of criteria and weights that are suitable for general application in the energy sector and can best describe the decision-making mechanisms present in society and various social groups. When developing the system of criteria, we moved away from the hierarchical approach related to the three pillars of sustainability; therefore, a wide range of notions were assessed based on a population representative survey data collected in Hungary. We used algebraic methods to explore the internal structure of the set of criteria that had been previously defined by means of social sciences, while the importance weights were specified by a... Keywords: building simulation, cold climate, hot climate, mixed climate, occupancy sensor, occupancy-based control, variable-air-volume system
Variable-air-volume (VAV) systems are used in many office buildings. The minimum airflow rate setting of VAV terminal boxes has a significant impact on both energy consumption and indoor air quality. Conventional controls usually have the terminal’s minimum airflow rate at a constant (e.g., 30% or more of the terminal design airflow rate), irrespective of the occupancy status, which may cause problems, such as excessive simultaneous heating and cooling, under ventilation, and thermal comfort issues. This paper examines the potential of energy savings from occupancy-based controls (OBCs). The sensed occupancy information, either occupant presence or people count, is used to determine the airflow rate of terminal boxes, the thermostat setpoints, and the lighting control. Using EnergyPlus, a whole-building energy modeling software, the energy savings of OBC strategies are evaluated for representative existing medium office buildings in the U.S. The simulation results show that the convent... Keywords: low pass filter, moving average, Photovoltaic solar system, power fluctuations, ramp control, supercapacitors
The power generated by photovoltaic solar systems is exposed to high variability of irradiance mainly due to weather conditions, which cause instability in the electrical networks connected to these systems. This study shows the typical behavior of solar irradiance in an Andean city, which presents considerable variations that can reach up to 63% of the nominal power of the photovoltaic system, at time intervals in the order of seconds. The study covers the application of 3 techniques to reduce power fluctuations at the point of common coupling (PCC), with the incorporation of energy storage systems, under the same irradiance conditions. Supercapacitors were used as the storage system, which were selected for their high efficiency and useful life. A state of charge control is also applied by means of a hysteresis band. The three algorithms studied show similar behaviors; however, the ramp control technique has the best performance. The storage system was dimensioned based on the photov... [more]

Keywords: continuous market, discrete market, energy management system, energy trading, microgrids, Model Predictive Control, peer to peer, prosumers, stochastic
This article studies the exchange of self-produced renewable energy between prosumers (and with pure end consumers), through the discrete trading of energy packages and proposes a framework for optimizing this exchange. In order to mitigate the imbalances derived from discrepancies between production and consumption and their respective forecasts, the simultaneous continuous trading of instantaneous power quotas is proposed, giving rise to a time-ahead market running in parallel with a real-time one. An energy management system (EMS) based on stochastic model predictive control (SMPC) simultaneously determines the optimal bidding strategies for both markets, as well as the optimal utilisation of any energy storage system (ESS). Simulations carried out for a heterogeneous group of agents show that those with SMPC-EMS achieve savings of between 3% and 15% in their energy operation economic result. The proposed structures allows the peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading between end users with... [more]

Keywords: control and structure parameters, experimental verification, starting performance, switched reluctance motor
To investigate the influence of control and structure parameters on the starting performance of a switched reluctance motor, a 12/8 pole switched reluctance motor is analyzed in this paper. The novel field-circuit coupled finite element method of switched reluctance motor is proposed in the paper. The influence of the controller on the switched reluctance motor is considered. The starting performance of the switched reluctance motor is obtained under the different control and structure parameters. The alternating starting mode of single- and two-phase winding can improve the starting torque of switched reluctance motor (SRM). As the stator pole arc coefficient increases, the starting torque of SRM increases. The appropriate reduction of the air gap length ca... [more]

Keywords: efficiency optimization, induction motor, load torque observer, optimal rotor flux, smooth switching
In this paper, an adaptive load torque observer based on backstepping control is designed, which achieves accurate load estimation where the load is unknown. Based on this, in order to reduce the loss of the motor at low load, a smooth switching strategy of rotor flux based on speed error is designed. According to the real-time speed error of the induction motor, the smooth switching strategy achieves dynamic flux switching. Firstly, when the uncertain load occurs for the first time in the recursive design, the adaptive law of the load is designed, and a novel adaptive load torque observer is obtained, which accurately estimates the uncertain load torque in real time. Secondly, the relationship between the loss and the rotor flux is established by analyzing the loss model of induction motor, and the optimal rotor flux is obtained. The smooth switching control strategy based on speed error is designed to realize the efficiency optimization of induction motor. Finally, the control strate... [more]

Keywords: control strategy, hybrid vehicle, Kalman filter, maximum power point tracker, metaheuristic optimization, online parameters estimation, power management, semiempirical modeling
An energy management strategy (EMS) efficiently splits the power among different sources in a hybrid fuel cell vehicle (HFCV). Most of the existing EMSs are based on static maps while a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has time-varying characteristics, which can cause mismanagement in the operation of a HFCV. This paper proposes a framework for the online parameters identification of a PMEFC model while the vehicle is under operation. This identification process can be conveniently integrated into an EMS loop, regardless of the EMS type. To do so, Kalman filter (KF) is utilized to extract the parameters of a PEMFC model online. Unlike the other similar papers, special attention is given to the initialization of KF in this work. In this regard, an optimization algorithm, shuffled frog-leaping algorithm (SFLA), is employed for the initialization of the KF. The SFLA is first used offline to find the right initial values for the PEMFC model parameters using the available polariza... [more]

Keywords: clamping, control, cylinder, Energy Efficiency, pneumatics
Since pneumatic systems are widely used in various branches of industry, the need to find ways to reduce energy consumption in these systems has become very pressing. The reduction in energy consumption in these systems is reflected in the reduction of compressed air consumption. The paper presents a cylinder control system with a piston rod on one side, in which the reduction in energy consumption is ensured by using different levels of supply pressure in the working and the return stroke, and by holding the cylinder piston rod in its final positions with a clamping cartridge. Clamping and holding the piston rod in its final position further affects the reduction in energy consumption. Experimental data show that the application of the proposed control leads to a decrease in compressed air consumption of 25.54% to 32.97%, depending on the compressed air pressure used in the return stroke. The cost-effectiveness of the proposed cylinder control with different levels of compressed air p... [more]

Electric vehicles (EVs) have become widespread during the last decade because of the distinct advantages they offer compared to the conventional ones. However, the increased penetration of EVs in the global transportation market has led increased electricity demands, which is expected to affect the operation of energy distribution systems. In the present paper, a demonstration about the effects of uncontrolled EVs charging in a case study low voltage (LV) network is demonstrated and a fuzzy energy management strategy for the coordination of EV charging in LV networks is presented, by including the distance of the EVs from the transformers in the fuzzy management systems for the first time. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) European Test Feeder is used as a case study low voltage distribution grid. In particular, the developed system configuration takes into consideration the architecture of the grid, the ampacities of the lines and the voltages at the system’... [more]

Keywords: droop control, rotor kinetic energy, supercapacitor, virtual inertia
The large-scale application of wind power eases the shortage of conventional energy, but it also brings great hidden danger to the stability and security of the power grid because wind power has no ability for frequency regulation. When doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbines use rotor kinetic energy to participate in frequency regulation, it can effectively respond to frequency fluctuation, but has the problems of secondary frequency drop and output power loss. Furthermore, it cannot provide long-term power support. To solve these problems, a coordinated frequency control strategy based on rotor kinetic energy and supercapacitor was proposed in this paper. In order to ensure the DFIG provides fast and long-term power support, a supercapacitor was used to realize the droop characteristic, and rotor kinetic energy was used to realize the inertia characteristic like synchronous generator (SG). Additionally, the supercapacitor is also controlled to compensate for the pow... [more]

Keywords: DC-link voltage control timescale, DFIG, eigenvalue analysis, PLL, weak grid
The DC-link voltage control (DVC) timescale (i.e., the frequency dynamics covering converter outer controls) instabilities in wind generation have gained increased attention recently. This paper presents DVC timescale modeling and stability analysis for multi doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) connected to weak AC grids. A reduced-order, small-signal model of a grid-tied multi-DFIG system, designed for DVC dynamics analysis, is firstly proposed. The model allows for the dynamic interactions among the DC-link voltage control, active power control (APC), terminal voltage control (TVC) and phase-locked loop (PLL). Eigenvalue and participation factor analyses are conducted to explore the potential instabilities and correlated critical factors for such a multi-machine system. The sensitivity studies find that instability can occur at high levels of power generations or low short-circuit ratio (SCR) conditions. In addition, the dominant mode is identified to be highly related to the PLL... [more]

Keywords: dc/dc power conversion, inverters, microprocessor applications, power control, solar power generation
In many solar inverters, a dc/dc converter is mainly located between the solar arrays and the inverter. This study presents an enhanced maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm for photovoltaic (PV) systems that drives solar array voltages to track a reference value and decreases fluctuations and oscillations in PV voltage. Different from the previously presented methods, a novel MPPT method is proposed that ensures tracking accuracy by considering output voltage in addition to input voltage and currents. The proposed method detects d I / d V variations, compares the output voltage with the desired reference to shift operation mode and refreshes step size. The digital filtering, enhanced PI, and perturb-and-observe (P&O) tracking features of the proposed MPPT method make it robust to mitigate source fluctuations and sensitivity to partial shading based oscillations. In order to validate the success of the proposed method, a test rig has been installed with dual boost conve... [more]

Keywords: digital signal processor, field-excited flux-switching motor, high-frequency injection, predictive controller
Field-excited flux-switching motor drive systems have become more and more popular due to their robustness and lack of need for a permanent magnet. Three different types of predictive controllers, including a single-step predictive speed controller, a multi-step predictive speed controller, and a predictive current controller are proposed for sensorless flux-switching motor drive systems in this paper. By using a 1 kHz high-frequency sinusoidal voltage injected into the field winding and by measuring the a-b-c armature currents in the stator, an estimated rotor position that is near ± 2 electrical degrees is developed. To improve the dynamic responses of the field-excited flux-switching motor drive system, predictive controllers are employed. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed predictive controllers have better performance than PI controllers, including transient, load disturbance, and tracking responses. In addition, the adjustable speed range of the proposed drive s... [more]

Small-scale power generation based on renewable energy sources is gaining popularity in distribution grids, creating new challenges for power system control. At the same time, remote consumers with their own small-scale generation still have low reliability of power supply and poor power quality, due to the lack of proper technology for grid control when the main power supply is lost. Today, there is a global trend in the transition from a power supply with centralized control to a decentralized one, which has led to the Microgrid concept. A microgrid is an intelligent automated system that can reconfigure by itself, maintain the power balance, and distribute power flows. The main purpose of this paper is to study the method of control using reclosers in the Lahsh district of the Rasht grid in Tajikistan with distributed small generation. Based on modified reclosers, a method of decentralized synchronization and restoration of the grid normal operation after the loss of the main power... [more]
