Thermodynamic Optimization of a Waste Heat Power System under Economic Constraint
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electricity production cost, MPC, optimization objective, ORC, SRC, waste heat recovery
A novel thermo-economic performance indicator for a waste heat power system, namely, MPC, is proposed in this study, which denotes the maximum net power output with the constraint of EPC ≤ EPC0, where EPC is the electricity production cost of the system and EPC0 refers to the EPC of conventional fossil fuel power plants. The organic and steam Rankine cycle (ORC, SRC) systems driven by the flue gas are optimized to maximize the net power output with the constraint of EPC ≤ EPC0 by using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). The optimization process entails the design of the heat exchangers, the instantaneous calculation of the turbine efficiency, and the system cost estimation based on the Aspen Process Economic Analyzer. Six organic fluids, n-butane, R245fa, n-pentane, cyclo-pentane, MM (Hexamethyldisiloxane), and toluene, are considered for the ORC system. Results indicate that the MPC of the ORC system using cyclo-pentane is 39.7% higher than that of the SRC syste... [more]

Distributed Switched Optimal Control of an Electric Vehicle
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed optimal control, power management, switched optimal control
Distributed control is investigated to solve an electric vehicle switched optimal control problem faster than centralized control without significant performance change. The powertrain includes a cooling system, supercapacitor, and two switched mode components: a battery with discharging and charging modes and an electric drive with motoring and generating modes. Control-oriented component power flow models are developed with mode and temperature dependence. Component specific power and thermal management optimization problems, subject to these models, require solution for overall powertrain management. The power management problem is switched, having discrete-valued mode selection variables. Both problems are solved in a distributed manner using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). An ADMM-based algorithm to solve the switched powertrain management problem is proposed; it (i) solves the embedded version of the switched problem that relaxes discrete mode switch value... [more]

Application of the First Replica Controller in Korean Power Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control and protection, DPT, HIL, large-scale power system, real-time simulation, replica controller, TCSC, testing
The purpose of this paper is to introduce, examine, and evaluate the industrial experiences and effectiveness of a Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) replica controller installed in Korea in 2019 through a review of its configuration, test platform, and practical application, and further to propose operational guidelines for replica controllers. Four representative practical cases were conducted: a Dynamic Performance Test (DPT) under a sufficiently large-scale power system prior to the Site Acceptance Test (SAT), pre-verification for on-site controller modification during operation stage, parameter tuning to mitigate the control interaction, and time domain simulation for Sub-Synchronous Torsional Interaction (SSTI). None of these four cases can be performed in a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) or on-site. Therefore, TCSC control performance was accurately verified under the entire Korean power system based on a large-scale real-time simulator, which demonstrated its effecti... [more]

Laboratory Validation of Integrated Lighting Systems Retrofit Performance and Energy Savings
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: advanced lighting controls, automated shading systems, commercial buildings, daylighting, energy savings, integrated lighting retrofits, LEDs
Light-emitting diodes (LED) fixtures and lamps have emerged as leading technologies for general illumination and are a well-established energy efficiency retrofit measure in commercial buildings (from around 2% of installed fixtures and lamps in 2013 to 28% by 2020). Retrofit approaches that integrate elements, such as networked controls, daylight dimming, and advanced shade technologies lag in comparison. Integrated retrofits have been shown to increase savings over single end-use retrofits, but are perceived as higher complexity and risk. More validation of integrated lighting system performance is needed. This study presents results from laboratory testing of three packages combining fixtures, networked controls, task tuning, and daylight dimming, advanced shades, and lighting layout changes. We characterize performance in perimeter open-office zones, finding energy savings from 20% for daylight dimming and automated shades (no LED retrofit) to over 70% for LED retrofits with advanc... Continuous Control Set Model Predictive Control of a Switch Reluctance Drive Using Lookup Tables
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: continuous control set, electrical drive, magnetization surface, Model Predictive Control, pulse-width modulation, switched reluctance motor drive
A problem of the switched reluctance drive is its natural torque pulsations, which are partially solved with finite control set model predictive control strategies. However, the continuous control set model predictive control, required for precise torque stabilization and predictable power converter behavior, needs sufficient computation resources, thus limiting its practical implementation. The proposed model predictive control strategy utilizes offline processing of the magnetization surface of the switched reluctance motor. This helps to obtain precalculated current references for each torque command and rotor angular position in the offline mode. In online mode, the model predictive control strategy implements the current commands using the magnetization surface for fast evaluation of the required voltage command for the power converter. The proposed strategy needs only two lookup table operations requiring very small computation time, making instant execution of the whole control... [more]

Analysis of Synchronization Stability for Multi VSCs Parallel-Connected to Weak Grids by Improved Net Damping Criterion
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: net damping criterion, PLL, synchronization stability, VSC, weak grid
Recent studies show that the loss of stability for a voltage-source converter (VSC) in weak-grid connection is largely related to its synchronization unit, i.e., the phase-locked loop (PLL). This paper studies the synchronization stability of a system comprised by two VSCs in parallel connection to a weak grid. A reduced transfer function based small-signal model, which can allow for the interactions between PLL and converter outer power controls, is first proposed. Then, an improved net damping criterion is used to analyze the damping and stability characters of such system under various operating conditions and different controller configurations. Compared to the conventional net damping criterion, the used criterion has wider applicability in terms of stability judgment. Case studies show that the studied system tends to be unstable at weak-grid or heavy-loading conditions. The instability can be in the form of oscillations or monotonic divergence, in which, the latter is more likel... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: extreme learning machine, fault diagnosis, high-voltage circuit breaker, missing data, Softmax
Most of the prior-art electrical noninvasive monitoring systems adopt Zigbee, Bluetooth, or other wireless communication infrastructure. These low-cost channels are often interrupted by strong electromagnetic interference and result in monitoring anomalies, particularly packet loss, which severely affects the precision of equipment fault identification. In this paper, an iterative online fault identification framework for a high-voltage circuit breaker utilizing a novel lost data repair technique is developed to adapt to low-data quality conditions. Specifically, the improved efficient k-nearest neighbor (kNN) algorithm enabled by a k-dimensional (K-D) tree is utilized to select the reference templates for the unintegrated samples. An extreme learning machine (ELM) is utilized to estimate the missing data based on the selected nearest neighbors. The Softmax classifier is exploited to calculate the probability of the repaired sample being classified to each of the preset status classes.... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control parameters, energy production models, Lipschitz-type conditions, Nash-Cournot oligopolistic equilibrium model, optimization problems, variational inequality
This manuscript aims to incorporate an inertial scheme with Popov’s subgradient extragradient method to solve equilibrium problems that involve two different classes of bifunction. The novelty of our paper is that methods can also be used to solve problems in many fields, such as economics, mathematical finance, image reconstruction, transport, elasticity, networking, and optimization. We have established a weak convergence result based on the assumption of the pseudomonotone property and a certain Lipschitz-type cost bifunctional condition. The stepsize, in this case, depends upon on the Lipschitz-type constants and the extrapolation factor. The bifunction is strongly pseudomonotone in the second method, but stepsize does not depend on the strongly pseudomonotone and Lipschitz-type constants. In contrast, the first convergence result, we set up strong convergence with the use of a variable stepsize sequence, which is decreasing and non-summable. As the application, the variational ine... A State-Space Model of an Inverter-Based Microgrid for Multivariable Feedback Control Analysis and Design
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: inverter control, LQI, microgrid, Modelling, optimal control, stability analysis
In this work, a synchronous model for grid-connected and islanded microgrids is presented. The grid-connected model is based on the premise that the reference frame is synchronized with the AC bus. The quadrature component of the AC bus voltage can be cancelled, which allows to express output power as a linear equation for nominal values in the AC bus amplitude voltage. The model for the islanded microgrid is developed by integrating all the inverter dynamics using a state-space model for the load currents. This model is presented in a comprehensive way such that it could be scalable to any number of inverter-based generators using inductor−capacitor−inductor (LCL) output filters. The use of these models allows designers to assess microgrid stability and robustness using modern control methods such as eigenvalue analysis and singular value diagrams. Both models were tested and validated in an experimental setup to demonstrate their accuracy in describing microgrid dynamics. In addition... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct torque control, matrix converter, space vector modulation, torque performance improvement, torque tracking control
In asynchronous motor direct torque control systems, the power supply using the matrix converter can achieve the effect of direct torque control and also has the advantages of the matrix converter. Nonetheless, direct torque control still has drawbacks in terms of pulsation. In this paper, the characteristics of direct torque control method and its existing problems are analyzed in depth. In view of the shortcomings of torque ripple, an improved scheme of torque tracking control is proposed based on conventional control methods. On the basis of theoretical simulation, DSP and FPGA algorithms are designed respectively in C language and VHDL to implement the proposed control strategy. Finally, a highly integrated experimental platform of matrix converter has been developed to verify the proposed control strategy. The simulation and experimental results verify the correctness and effectiveness of the improved scheme.

Keywords: blind automated control, dimming control, exterior automated blind, full-scale mock-up, indoor illuminance, light emitting diodes (LED) lamp, lighting energy
In this study, the indoor illuminance of a full-scale mock-up with LED system and external automated blinds was quantitatively evaluated by performing experiments involving integrated blinds and LED dimming controls. Actual illuminance experimental data were constructed and analyzed using commercialized blind control logic. The results revealed changes in the LED dimming ratio (turning-off ratio), and that the indoor illuminance required for the indoor space of 500 ± 30 lx could be secured in all cases when daylight was introduced according to weather conditions. It was found that because the angle and vertical position (VP) were fixed, manual blind controls could not efficiently use daylight, even though they could cut off solar radiation. When the blinds were automatically controlled in three-steps based on the exterior vertical illuminance under clear sky, the dimming rates of Zones A and B were found to be 68 and 50%, respectively. Application of Norm Optimal Iterative Learning Control to Quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Monitoring Overhead Power System
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: gradient-based ILC, inspection task, Iterative Learning Control (ILC), Norm Optimal ILC, power system, quadrotor, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
Wind disturbances and noise severely affect Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) when monitoring and finding faults in overhead power lines. Accordingly, we propose repetitive learning as a new solution for the problem. In particular, the performance of Iterative Learning Control (ILC) that are based on optimal approaches are examined, namely (i) Gradient-based ILC and (ii) Norm Optimal ILC. When considering the repetitive nature of fault-finding tasks for electrical overhead power lines, this study develops, implements and evaluates optimal ILC algorithms for a UAV model. Moreover, we suggest attempting a learning gain variation on the standard optimal algorithms instead of heuristically selecting from the previous range. The results of both simulations and experiments of gradient-based norm optimal control reveal that the proposed ILC algorithm has not only contributed to good trajectory tracking, but also good convergence speed and the ability to cope with exogenous disturbances such as w... Fail-Operation Control of In-Wheel Motor Drive Electric Vehicle Based on Wheel Isolation and Yaw Moment Compensation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), fail operation, in-wheel motor, linear quadratic regulator (LQR), optimal torque distribution
To improve the trackability of in-wheel motor drive (IWMD) and wheel-individual steer electric vehicles (EVs) when steering actuators fail, the fail-operation control strategy was proposed to correct vehicles in a steering failure situation and avoid losing control of vehicle steering. A linear quadratic regulator (LQR) decides the additional yaw moment of the vehicle according to vehicle state errors. The tire force estimation module estimates the compensating resistance moment generated by the failed wheel according to the tire slip angle and the vertical tire force. By isolating the failed wheel, the optimal torque distribution (OTD) controller allocates the additional yaw moment and the compensating resistance moment to normal wheels to realize the fail-operation control of the IWMD vehicle. The control effect was verified through co-simulation of MATLAB/Simulink and Trucksim. Compared with the uncontrolled and direct torque allocation methods, the proposed OTD method reduces the l... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: frequency response, photovoltaic plants, power dynamics, transmission networks, volt/VAR control
In recent years, there has been a growing need for accurate models that describe the dynamics of renewable energy sources, especially photovoltaic sources and wind turbines. In light of this gap, this work focuses on the validation of standard dynamic models developed by the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), using actual measurements from the Western Texas and Southern California transmission networks. The tests are based on the North American Electric Reliability Corporation compliance standards and include dynamic stability tests for volt-varcontrol and primary frequency response. Through an extensive set of field tests, we show that the WECC generic models can be used to simulate real dynamic phenomena in large-scale solar photovoltaic power plants, and we propose guidelines for correct usage of these models. The results show that the WECC models are especially accurate when the photovoltaic system is connected with a low impedance to the main network. We also show th... [more]

Has China’s Oil Investment in Belt and Road Initiative Countries Helped Its Oil Import?
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Belt and Road initiative, oil import, oil security, overseas investment
Energy cooperation is an important part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). As China’s investment in One Belt One Road countries has increased substantially, a natural question is whether the investment in the BRI countries can contribute to its oil import since it is the most critical part of the national energy security strategy. By employing a dataset that includes the oil import from BRI countries and the oil-related investment in these countries, along with other control variables, an econometric analysis is conducted to investigate the relationship between these two variables. The estimation results provide supporting evidence for the hypothesis that China’s oil investment in BRI countries has helped enhance its oil security. Specifically, investment in BRI countries increases the oil import volume from the host country and diversifies China’s sources of imports. Further analysis also reveals that the effects do not differ by investment mode, e.g., greenfield or mergers and ac... [more]

Security Assessment and Coordinated Emergency Control Strategy for Power Systems with Multi-Infeed HVDCs
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electromagnetic transient (EMT)-transient stability (TS) hybrid simulation, emergency control strategy, multi-infeed HVDCs, receiving-end system, security assessment
Short-circuit faults in a receiving-end power system can lead to blocking events of the feed-in high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) systems, which may further result in system instability. However, security assessment methods based on the transient stability (TS) simulation can hardly catch the fault propagation phenomena between AC and DC subsystems. Moreover, effective emergency control strategies are needed to prevent such undesired cascading events. This paper focuses on power systems with multi-infeed HVDCs. An on-line security assessment method based on the electromagnetic transient (EMT)-TS hybrid simulation is proposed. DC and AC subsystems are modeled in EMTDC/PSCAD and PSS/E, respectively. In this way, interactions between AC and DC subsystems can be well reflected. Meanwhile, high computational efficiency is maintained for the on-line application. In addition, an emergency control strategy is developed, which coordinates multiple control resources, including HVDCs, pumped sto... [more]

Derivation of OCC Modulator for Grid-Tied Single-Stage Buck-Boost Inverter Operating in the Discontinuous Conduction Mode
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: buck-boost, discontinuous conduction mode, grid-tied, one-cycle control, single-stage
This paper is concerned with the derivation of a one-cycle controller for driving a single-stage buck-boost DC-AC micro-inverter in grid-tied applications. The topology under study is based on a full-bridge switch arrangement with no unfolder circuit. The proposed micro-inverter attains a high gain by applying a multi-winding tapped inductor and, therefore, can operate at grid-level voltage without using a DC-DC step-up stage. To minimize the switching loss, the proposed inverter is operated in the discontinuous conduction mode. The operation principles of the proposed topology in the discontinuous conduction mode are discussed and analyzed. Based on the analysis, the one-cycle control law and modulator circuitry needed to control the proposed micro-inverter are developed. The feasibility of the proposed modulation scheme is verified by simulation.

Decentralized Plug-and-Play Protection Scheme for Low Voltage DC Grids
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decentralized protection scheme, fault analysis, low voltage direct current grids, plug-and-play systems, solid-state circuit breakers
Since the voltages and currents in dc grids do not have a natural zero-crossing, the protection of these grids is more challenging than the protection of conventional ac grids. Literature presents several unit and non-unit protection schemes that rely on communication, or knowledge about the system’s topology and parameters in order to achieve selective protection in these grids. However, communication complicates fast fault detection and interruption, and a system’s parameters are subject to uncertainty and change. This paper demonstrates that, in low voltage dc grids, faults propagate fast through the grid and interrupted inductive currents commutate to non-faulted sections of the grid, which both can cause circuit breakers in non-faulted sections to trip. A decentralized plug-and-play protection scheme is proposed that ensures selectivity via an augmented solid-state circuit breaker topology and by utilizing the proposed time-current characteristic. It is experimentally shown that t... [more]

Keywords: current source inverter, direct predictive power control, power quality, single stage PV system
In this paper, a direct power predictive controller (DPPC) is derived for a current source inverter (CSI) based single stage photovoltaic (PV) system. The equations of the dynamics, including AC and DC filters, are formulated directly for the PV power and for the active and reactive power injected in the grid. This approach aims to guarantee fast and accurate tracking of the power. The proposed system is then validated through simulation and experimental results, showing that the PV system is able to follow the power references, guaranteeing a fast response to a step in the power, and decoupled active and reactive power control, with minimum total harmonic distortion (<5%) of the currents injected... Doubly Fed Induction Generator Open Stator Synchronized Control during Unbalanced Grid Voltage Condition
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), sequence control, synchronization, voltage unbalance, wind energy system
In this paper, a systematic synchronization procedure is proposed for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) during unbalanced grid voltage conditions. The initial induced voltage at the open stator terminal is required to synchronize with the grid voltage in magnitude, frequency and phase. An open stator negative sequence rotor current controller is implemented with the conventional DFIG vector controller, which allows the induced stator voltage to become as unbalanced as the grid voltage, hence enabling a smooth connection. A brief comparison is provided for practical issues such as controller structure variation between DFIG open stator and normal operating conditions, and initial encoder rotor angle measurement offset. The procedure is validated experimentally on a 2.2 kW laboratory-scaled DFIG test bench.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, DC voltage, dSPACE 1103, PI controller, shunt active power filter
This paper is focused on an adaptive controller for the direct current (DC) voltage in three-phase three-wire shunt active power filters systems. Although the controller structure of the proportional-integral (PI) type is determined off-line and does not change, the prescribed DC voltage and the controller parameters are calculated in an adaptation block, depending on the non-active power to be compensated. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault diagnosis, hybrid whale optimization, Machine Learning, power transformer system, probabilistic neural network
The burgeoning prognostic and health management (PHM) engineering technology with superior performance has lately received extensive attention in the academic circle. Nevertheless, the various types of faults of the power transformer often lead to less accurate predictions and the instability of the power system. To address these problems, a power transformer PHM model with a hybrid machine learning method-approach is proposed in this paper. The model uses intelligent sensors to obtain dissolved gas analysis (DGA) data for fault diagnosis of the power transformer system, so as to compress the complexity of features (gas types) in the power transformer. In particular, to enhance the robustness of the model, we adopt a modified differential evolution whale optimization algorithm (MDE-WOA) to optimize the probabilistic neural network (PNN), namely, the classification performance of the model is improved by updating the smoothing factor ( σ ) of PNN.
