Environmental Method for Synthesizing Amorphous Silica Oxide Nanoparticles from a Natural Material
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: amorphous silica Nanoparticle, environmentally friendly short method, non-toxic, rice husks
Numerous studies have been performed on the generation of several silicon-based engineering materials that often have used chemical materials that have high risks for health and the safety of the environment. Generally, in the synthesis of Nano-silica, tetramethoxysilane, tetraethoxysilane, and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) are used as precursor materials; however, these materials are toxic and expensive for the production of Nano-silica. This paper presents an environmentally friendly short method (EFSM) with high efficiency for the synthesis of amorphous silica oxide Nanoparticles by using agricultural waste called rice husks (RHs). Use of the EFSM method as an alternative to the chemical methods would have the advantages of fast and simple operation, controllability, great pureness of the Nanoparticles, and low manufacturing cost. A Nanoparticles (NPs) evaluation was conducted with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and X-ray... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: antifouling, flow characteristics, microstructured surface, numerical simulation
As marine biofouling seriously affects the development and utilization of oceans, the antifouling technology of microstructured surface has become a research hotspot due to its green and environmentally friendly advantages. In the present research, the motion models of microorganisms on the surfaces of five rectangular micropits, in co-current and counter-current flow direction, were established. Dynamic mesh technology was used to simulate the movements of microorganisms with different radii in the near-wall area, and the fluid kinematics and shear stress distributions in different-sized micropits were compared. Furthermore, moving microorganisms were included in the three-dimensional microstructure model to achieve the real situation of biofouling. Simulation results revealed that the vortex flow velocity in the micropits increased with the increase of the inlet flow velocity and the existence of the vortex flow effectively reduced the formation of conditioning layers in the micropit... Prediction of New Distillation-Membrane Separation Integrated Process with Potential in Industrial Application
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: azeotrope separation, distillation-membrane separation integration, genetic programming, membrane modification
In this paper, a new integrated distillation-membrane separation process solution strategy based on genetic programming (GP) was established for azeotrope separation. Then, a price evaluation method based on the theory of unit membrane area was proposed, so that those membranes which are still in the experimental stage and have no actual industrial cost for reference can also be used in the experimental research. For different characteristics and separation requirements of various azeotropic systems, the solution strategy can be matched with difference pervaporation membranes, and the optimal distillation-membrane separation integrated process can be solved quickly and accurately. Taking methanol-toluene as an example, the separation operation was optimized by using the algorithm. The effects of different feed flows and compositions on the modification of the chitosan membrane were discussed. These results provide a reliable basis for the prospects for development and modification dire... [more]

Cloning and Expression of Levansucrase Gene of Bacillus velezensis BM-2 and Enzymatic Synthesis of Levan
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: B. velezensis, clone, expression, levan synthesis, levansucrase
Levan is a versatile and valuable fructose homopolymer, and a few bacterial strains have been found to produce levan. Although levan products have numerous specific functions, their application and promotion were limited by the production capacity and production cost. Bacillus velezensis BM-2 is a levan-synthesizing strain, but its levan production is too low to apply. In this study, the levansucrase gene of B. velezensis BM-2 was cloned to plasmid pET-32a-Acma-zz, and the recombinant plasmids were transferred to Escherichia coli BL21. A transformed clone was selected to express and secrete the fusion enzymes with an Acma-tag efficiently. The expressed products were further purified by a self-developed separating material called bacterial enhancer matrix (BEM) particles. The purification efficiency was 93.4%, with a specific activity of 16.589 U/mL protein. The enzymatic reaction results indicated that the optimal reaction temperature is 50 °C, the optimal pH of the acetate buffer is 5... [more]

Ameliorated Electrical-Tree Resistant Characteristics of UV-Initiated Cross-Linked Polyethylene Nanocomposites with Surface-Functionalized Nanosilica
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: auxiliary crosslinker, crosslinked polyethylene, dielectric breakdown strength, electrical tree, nanodielectrics
Given the high interest in promoting crosslinking efficiency of ultraviolet-initiated crosslinking technique and ameliorating electrical resistance of crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) materials, we have developed the funcionalized-SiO2/XLPE nanocomposites by chemically grafting auxiliary crosslinkers onto nanosilica surfaces. Trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) as an effective auxiliary crosslinker for polyethylene is grafted successfully on nanosilica surfaces through thiolene-click chemical reactions with coupling agents of sulfur silanes and 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxy silane (MPTMS), as characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles could be dispersively filled into polyethylene matrix even at a high filling content that would generally produce agglomerations of neat SiO2 nanofillers. Ultraviolet-initiated polyethylene crosslinking reactions are efficiently stimulated by TMPTA grafted onto surfaces of... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: chemical recycling, dehalogenation, oil upgrading, pyrolysis, recovery of aromatics, WEEE
More than 200 kg real waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) shredder residues from a German dismantling plant were treated at 650 °C in a demonstration scale thermochemical conversion plant. The focus within this work was the generation, purification, and analysis of pyrolysis oil. Subsequent filtration and fractional distillation were combined to yield basic chemicals in high purity. By means of fractional distillation, pure monocyclic aromatic fractions containing benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX aromatics) as well as styrene and α-methyl styrene were isolated for chemical recycling. Mass balances were determined, and gas chromatography−mass spectrometry (GC-MS) as well as energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) measurements provided data on the purity and halogen content of each fraction. This work shows that thermochemical conversion and the subsequent refining by fractional distillation is capable of recycling WEEE shredder residues, producing pure... [more]

Reconstruction of Vascular and Urologic Tubular Grafts by Tissue Engineering
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biomaterials, blood vessel, self-assembly, tissue engineering, ureter, urethra
Tissue engineering is one of the most promising scientific breakthroughs of the late 20th century. Its objective is to produce in vitro tissues or organs to repair and replace damaged ones using various techniques, biomaterials, and cells. Tissue engineering emerged to substitute the use of native autologous tissues, whose quantities are sometimes insufficient to correct the most severe pathologies. Indeed, the patient’s health status, regulations, or fibrotic scars at the site of the initial biopsy limit their availability, especially to treat recurrence. This new technology relies on the use of biomaterials to create scaffolds on which the patient’s cells can be seeded. This review focuses on the reconstruction, by tissue engineering, of two types of tissue with tubular structures: vascular and urological grafts. The emphasis is on self-assembly methods which allow the production of tissue/organ substitute without the use of exogenous material, with the patient’s cells producing thei... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biomimetic chromatography, human serum albumin (HSA), isoxazolone, QSRR analysis
The development of effective, nontoxic antifungal agents is one of the most important challenges for medicinal chemistry. A series of isoxazolo [3,4-b]pyridine-3(1H)-one derivatives previously synthesized in our laboratory demonstrated promising antifungal properties. The main goal of this study was to investigate their retention behavior in a human serum proteins-high-performance liquid chromatography (HSA-HPLC) system and explore the molecular mechanism of HSA-isoxazolone interactions using a quantitative structure−retention relationship (QSRR) approach. In order to realize this goal, multiple linear regression (MLR) modeling has been performed. The proposed QSRR models presented correlation between experimentally determined lipophilicity and computational theoretical molecular descriptors derived from Dragon 7.0 (Talete, Milan, Italy) software on the affinity of isoxazolones to HSA. The calculated plasma protein binding (PreADMET software) as well as chromatographic lipophilicity (l... [more]

Experimental Study on the Effect of Basalt Fiber and Sodium Alginate in Polymer Concrete Exposed to Elevated Temperature
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: alginate, basalt fiber, compressive strength, concrete, epoxy resin, raised temperature
Polymer concrete contains aggregates and a polymeric binder such as epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester, or normal epoxy mixture. Since polymer binders in polymer concrete are made of organic materials, they have a very low heat and fire resistance compared to minerals. This paper investigates the effect of basalt fibers (BF) and alginate on the compressive strength of polymer concrete. An extensive literature review was completed, then two experimental phases including the preliminary phase to set the appropriate mix design, and the main phase to investigate the compressive strength of samples after exposure to elevated temperatures of 100 °C, 150 °C, and 180 °C were conducted. The addition of BF and/or alginate decreases concrete compressive strength under room temperature, but the addition of BF and alginate each alone leads to compressive strength increase during exposure to heat and increase in the temperature to 180 °C showed almost positive on the compressive strength. The addition of... [more]

The Prospect of Microwave Heating: Towards a Faster and Deeper Crack Healing in Asphalt Pavement
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: microwave heating, porous asphalt, self-healing asphalt, semi-circular bending
Microwave heating has been shown to be an effective method of heating asphalt concrete and in turn healing the damage. As such, microwave heating holds great potential in rapid (1−3 min) and effective damage healing, resulting in improvement in the service life, safety, and sustainability of asphalt pavement. This study focused on the microwave healing effect on porous asphalt concrete. Steel wool fibres were incorporated into porous asphalt to improve the microwave heating efficiency, and the optimum microwave heating time was determined. Afterwards, the microwave healing efficiency was evaluated using a semi−circular bending and healing programme. The results show that the microwave healing effect is largely determined by the steel fibre content and the mix design of the porous asphalt concrete.. Besides, the uneven heating effect of microwave contributes to an unstable damage recovery in the asphalt mixture, which makes it less efficient than induction heating. However, microwaves e... March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, catalyst, Ctec2, glucose, pretreatment, sulfonic solid, switchgrass
In the present research, activated carbon-supported sulfonic acid catalysts were synthesized and tested as pretreatment agents for the conversion of switchgrass into glucose. The catalysts were synthesized by reacting sulfuric acid, methanesulfonic acid, and p-toluenesulfonic acid with activated carbon. The characterization of catalysts suggested an increase in surface acidities, while surface area and pore volumes decreased because of sulfonation. Batch experiments were performed in 125 mL serum bottles to investigate the effects of temperature (30, 60, and 90 °C), reaction time (90 and 120 min) on the yields of glucose. Enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated switchgrass using Ctec2 yielded up to 57.13% glucose. Durability tests indicated that sulfonic solid-impregnated carbon catalysts were able to maintain activity even after three cycles. From the results obtained, the solid acid catalysts appear to serve as effective pretreatment agents and can potentially reduce the use of convention... [more]

Keywords: hydrothermal hydrolysis, nitrogen extraction, pre-treatment, sequential hydrothermal liquefaction, sewage sludge
A hydrothermal pre-treatment has been developed to improve sewage sludge quality or to produce low nitrogen biocrude via hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) in a subsequent step. The mild hydrothermal pre-treatment (150 °C) step was performed with deionized water, sulfuric acid (0.5 M), or citric acid (0.5 M) to solubilize nitrogen containing compounds in the aqueous supernatant. Downstream, the residual solid material was liquefied with the addition of sodium carbonate via hydrothermal liquefaction (350 °C). The pre-treatment with citric acid transferred up to 66.7 wt. % of nitrogen into the aqueous supernatant, while 62.0 wt. % of carbon was recovered in the solid. Due to the pre-treatment lipids retained in the sewage sludge solid, which increased the favored biocrude yield up to 42.9 wt. % and the quality evaluating value H/Ceff ratio significantly to 1.48. Multi-method characterization of the resulted biocrude samples showed a lower concentration of N-heterocycles, while long-chain al... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: AKT, ERK, insulin, PDX-1, PI3K, Salicornia herbacea, α-glucosidase
In this study, we examined the effect of ethanolic extract of Salicornia herbacea (ESH), isorhamnetin 3-O-glucoside (I3G), quercetin 3-O-glucoside (Q3G), quercetin, and isorhamnetin on α-glucosidase activity and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) in insulin-secreting rat insulinoma (INS-1) cells. A portion of the ethyl acetate fraction of ESH was chromatographed on a silica gel by a gradient elution with chloroform and methanol to provide Q3G and I3G. ESH, Q3G, and quercetin inhibited α-glucosidase activity, and quercetin (IC50 value was 29.47 ± 3.36 μM) inhibited the activity more effectively than Q3G. We further demonstrated that ESH, Q3G, quercetin, I3G, and isorhamnetin promote GSIS in INS-1 pancreatic β-cells without inducing cytotoxicity. Among them, I3G was the most effective in enhancing GSIS. I3G enhanced the phosphorylation of total extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS-2), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), Akt, and activa... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: air elutriator, low density polyethylene, separation efficiency, separation intensification
During the transportation and packaging of low density polyethylene (LDPE) granular materials, fine dusts such as floccules, powder and fiber will be produced, which pollute the environment, affect product quality and generate fire hazards. In this work, the separation performance of fine dust and optimal operating conditions of an improved elutriator were investigated experimentally. Experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of air speed, feeding speed, and grid layout on the removal efficiency of fine particles. Experimental data showed that the separation efficiency of the novel elutriator ranged from 96% to 98.50%, which was more stable and an average of 51.44% higher than that of the original elutriator. By setting internals and improving the structure, the gas flow field in the equipment was regulated, the particle dispersion was intensified, and the static electricity was eliminated, which significantly improved the separation efficiency of fine dust.

Carbon sequestration via the carbon capture and storage (CCS) method is one of the most useful methods of lowering CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Ethylenediamine (EDA)- and triethylenetetramine (TETA)-modified mesoporous carbon (MC) has been successfully prepared as a CO2 storage material. The effect of various concentrations of EDA or TETA added to MC, as well as activated carbon (AC), on their CO2 adsorption capacity were investigated using high-purity CO2 as a feed and a titration method to quantitatively measure the amount of adsorbed CO2. The results showed that within 60 min adsorption time, MCEDA49 gave the highest CO2 capacity adsorption (19.68 mmol/g), followed by MC-TETA30 (11.241 mol/g). The improvement of CO2 adsorption capacity at low TETA loadings proved that the four amine functional groups in TETA gave an advantage to CO2 adsorption. TETA-functionalized MC has the potential to be used as a CO2 storage material at a low concentration. Therefore, it is relatively benign... [more]
