Distributed Machine Learning on Dynamic Power System Data Features to Improve Resiliency for the Purpose of Self-Healing
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: event detection, feature extraction, machine-learning, self-healing grid
Numerous online methods for post-fault restoration have been tested on different types of systems. Modern power systems are usually operated at design limits and therefore more prone to post-fault instability. However, traditional online methods often struggle to accurately identify events from time series data, as pattern-recognition in a stochastic post-fault dynamic scenario requires fast and accurate fault identification in order to safely restore the system. One of the most prominent methods of pattern-recognition is machine learning. However, machine learning alone is neither sufficient nor accurate enough for making decisions with time series data. This article analyses the application of feature selection to assist a machine learning algorithm to make better decisions in order to restore a multi-machine network which has become islanded due to faults. Within an islanded multi-machine system the number of attributes significantly increases, which makes application of machine lea... [more]

Lithium-Rich Cobalt-Free Manganese-Based Layered Cathode Materials for Li-Ion Batteries: Suppressing the Voltage Fading
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cathode, layered structure, Li-ion batteries, Li-rich oxide, voltage decay
Lithium-rich layered oxides are recognized as promising materials for Li-ion batteries, owing to higher capacity than the currently available commercialized cathode, for their lower cost. However, their voltage decay and cycling instability during the charge/discharge process are problems that need to be solved before their practical application can be envisioned. These problems are mainly associated with a phase transition of the surface layer from the layered structure to the spinel structure. In this paper, we report the AlF3-coating of the Li-rich Co-free layered Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 (LLNMO) oxide as an effective strategy to solve these problems. The samples were synthesized via the hydrothermal route that insures a very good crystallization in the layered structure, probed by XRD, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The hydrothermally synthesized samples before and after AlF3 coating are well crystallized in the layered structure with particle sizes of... [more]

Investigation of H Sorption and Corrosion Properties of Sm2MnNi7−x (0 ≤ x < 0.5) Intermetallic Compounds Forming Reversible Hydrides
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: corrosion, magnetic measurements, metallic hydrides, Ni-MH batteries, rare earths
Intermetallic compounds are key materials for energy transition as they form reversible hydrides that can be used for solid state hydrogen storage or as anodes in batteries. ABy compounds (A = Rare Earth (RE); B = transition metal; 2 < y < 5) are good candidates to fulfill the required properties for practical applications. They can be described as stacking of [AB5] and [AB2] sub-units along the c crystallographic axis. The latter sub-unit brings a larger capacity, while the former one provides a better cycling stability. However, ABy binaries do not show good enough properties for applications. Upon hydrogenation, they exhibit multiplateau behavior and poor reversibility, attributed to H-induced amorphization. These drawbacks can be overcome by chemical substitutions on the A and/or the B sites leading to stabilized reversible hydrides. The present work focuses on the pseudo-binary Sm2MnNi7−x system (0 ≤ x < 0.5). The structural, thermodynamic and corrosion properties are analyz... [more]

Laboratory Model Studies on the Drying Efficiency of Transformer Cellulose Insulation Using Synthetic Ester
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: drying, moisture, oil–paper insulation, synthetic ester, transformer
This paper presents the results of laboratory tests of cellulose insulation drying with the use of synthetic ester. The effectiveness of the drying process was investigated depending on the initial moisture of cellulose samples (2%, 3%, and 4%), ester temperature (55, 70, and 85 °C), initial moisture of the ester (70, 140, and 220 ppm), drying time (48, 96, and 168 h), and the weight ratio of cellulosic materials to ester (0.067 and 0.033). A large influence of temperature and time of drying on the efficiency of the drying process was found. This is important information due to the application of the results in the transformers drying procedure. The heating and drying ester unit should provide the highest possible temperature. For the assumed experiment conditions the initial moisture of the ester had little effect on the drying efficiency. An ester with a moisture content below 140 ppm can still be considered as meeting the requirements for drying cellulose with significant moisture.... [more]

Volumetric Properties and Surface Tension of Few-Layer Graphene Nanofluids Based on a Commercial Heat Transfer Fluid
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: density, few-layer graphene, isobaric thermal expansivity, nanofluids, propylene-glycol/water, surface tension
Volumetric properties such as density and isobaric thermal expansivity, and surface tension are of paramount importance for nanofluids to evaluate their ability to be used as efficient heat transfer fluids. In this work, the nanofluids are prepared by dispersing few-layer graphene in a commercial heat transfer fluid Tyfocor® LS (40:60 wt.% propylene-glycol/water) with the aid of three different nonionic surfactants: Triton X-100, Pluronic® P-123 and Gum Arabic. The density, isobaric thermal expansivity and surface tension of each of the base fluids and nanofluids are evaluated between 283.15 and 323.15 K. The influence of the mass content in few-layer graphene from 0.05 to 0.5% on these nanofluid properties was studied. The density behavior of the different proposed nanofluids is slightly affected by the presence of graphene, and its evolution is well predicted by the weight-average equation depending on the density of each component of the nanofluids. For all the analyzed samples, the... [more]

Experimental Hydration Temperature Increase in Borehole Heat Exchangers during Thermal Response Tests for Geothermal Heat Pump Design
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: borehole heat exchangers, distributed temperature response test, ground coupled heat pumps, grouting material, hydration heat release
The correct design of a system of borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) is the primary requirement for attaining high performance with geothermal heat pumps. The design procedure is based on a reliable estimate of ground thermal properties, which can be assessed by a Thermal Response Test (TRT). The TRT analysis is usually performed adopting the Infinite Line Source model and is based on a series of assumptions to which the experiment must comply, including stable initial ground temperatures and a constant heat transfer rate during the experiment. The present paper novelty is related to depth distributed temperature measurements in a series of TRT experiments. The approach is based on the use of special submersible sensors able to record their position inside the pipes. The focus is on the early period of BHE installation, when the grout cement filling the BHE is still chemically reacting, thus releasing extra heat. The comprehensive dataset presented here shows how grout hydration can affec... [more]

MHD Heat Transfer in W-Shaped Inclined Cavity Containing a Porous Medium Saturated with Ag/Al2O3 Hybrid Nanofluid in the Presence of Uniform Heat Generation/Absorption
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: free convection, hybrid nanofluid, porous medium, uniform heat generation or absorption, W-shaped inclined enclosure
In this paper, a 2D numerical study of natural convection heat transfer in a W-shaped inclined enclosure with a variable aspect ratio was performed. The enclosure contained a porous medium saturated with Ag/Al2O3 hybrid nanofluid in the presence of uniform heat generation or absorption under the effect of a uniform magnetic field. The vertical walls of the enclosure were heated differentially; however, the top and bottom walls were kept insulated. The governing equations were solved with numerical simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics which is based on the finite element method. The results showed that the convection heat transfer was improved with the increase of the aspect ratio; the average Nusselt number reached a maximum for an aspect ratio (AR) = 0.7 and the effect of the inclination was practically negligible for an aspect ratio of AR = 0.7. The maximum heat transfer performance was obtained for an inclination of ω = 15 and the minimum is obtained for ω = 30 . T... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: attapulgite, hydrogen from water, levulinic acid, sepiolite, Zn: Ni, γ-valerolactone
γ-Valerolactone (GVL) is a valuable chemical that can be used as a clean additive for automotive fuels. This compound can be produced from biomass-derived compounds. Levulinic acid (LA) is a compound that can be obtained easily from biomass and it can be transformed into GVL by dehydration and hydrogenation using metallic catalysts. In this work, catalysts of Ni (a non-noble metal) supported on a series of natural and low-cost clay-materials have been tested in the transformation of LA into GVL. Catalysts were prepared by a modified wet impregnation method using oxalic acid trying to facilitate a suitable metal dispersion. The supports employed are attapulgite and two sepiolites with different surface areas. Reaction tests have been undertaken using an aqueous medium at moderate reaction temperatures of 120 and 180 °C. Three types of experiments were undertaken: (i) without H2 source, (ii) using formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source and (iii) using Zn in order to transform water in hydro... [more]

Nanomaterial-Based Drilling Fluids for Exploitation of Unconventional Reservoirs: A Review
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: drilling technology, nanotechnology, rheology, shale, shale inhibition, unconventional reservoirs
The world’s energy demand is steadily increasing where it has now become difficult for conventional hydrocarbon reservoir to meet levels of demand. Therefore, oil and gas companies are seeking novel ways to exploit and unlock the potential of unconventional resources. These resources include tight gas reservoirs, tight sandstone oil, oil and gas shales reservoirs, and high pressure high temperature (HPHT) wells. Drilling of HPHT wells and shale reservoirs has become more widespread in the global petroleum and natural gas industry. There is a current need to extend robust techniques beyond costly drilling and completion jobs, with the potential for exponential expansion. Drilling fluids and their additives are being customized in order to cater for HPHT well drilling issues. Certain conventional additives, e.g., filtrate loss additives, viscosifier additives, shale inhibitor, and shale stabilizer additives are not suitable in the HPHT environment, where they are consequently inappropria... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonation lime mud, disc granulation, mineral–organic fertilizers, waste as fertilizers
Carbonation lime mud is a by-product formed during the production of sugar in the process of raw beetroot juice purification. On average, during one campaign, over 12,000 tons of carbonation lime mud is obtained in the operation of one sugar production plant. It is stored in prisms, which negatively affects the environment. The chemical properties of carbonation lime mud allow using it as a soil improver. This article presents the results of research into the development of carbonation lime mud disposal technology and its management. The chemical composition and physical properties of waste were determined. It has been proposed to use carbonation lime mud as the basic raw material in the production of mineral−organic fertilizers. Tests were conducted in a disc granulator. The granulated material was wetted with water and aqueous solution of molasses. Carbonation lime mud is a material that is easily subjected to the granulation process, using any wetting liquid. The beds wetted with 33... [more]

Keywords: geothermal energy, heat transport, LCOH, mobile thermal energy storage (M-TES), phase change material (PCM), renewable energy source
The paper considers technical and economic possibilities to provide geothermal heat to individual recipients using a mobile thermal storage system (M-TES) in Polish conditions. The heat availability, temperature and heat cost influence the choice of location—Bańska Niżna, near Zakopane in the southern part of the Poland. The indirect contact energy storage container was selected with phase change material characterized by a melting temperature of 70 °C and a heat storage capacity of 250 kJ/kg, in the amount of 800 kg. The economic profitability of the M-TES system (with a price per warehouse of 6000 EUR, i.e., a total of 12,000 EUR—two containers are needed) can be achieved for a heat demand of 5000 kWh/year with the price of a replaced heat source at the level of 0.21 EUR/kWh and a distance between the charging station and building (heat recipient) of 0.5 km. For the heat demand of 15,000 kWh/year, the price for the replaced heat reached EUR 0.11/kWh, and the same distance. In turn, f... [more]

Error Analysis of QUB Method in Non-Ideal Conditions during the Experiment
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: building energy modeling, Energy Efficiency, overall heat transfer coefficient, short-term thermal characterization methods
Overall heat transfer coefficient, also known as the intrinsic performance measurement of the building, determines the amount of heat lost by a building due to temperature difference between indoor and outdoor. QUB (Quick U-value of Buildings) is a short-term method for measuring the overall heat transfer coefficient of buildings. The test involves heating and cooling the house with a power step and measuring the indoor temperature response in a single night. Ideally, the outdoor temperature during QUB experiment should remain constant. To compare the influence of variable outdoor temperature, the QUB experiments are simulated on a well-calibrated model with real weather conditions. The experiments at varying outdoor temperature and constant outdoor temperature during the night show that the results in both conditions are nearly similar. A ±2 °C increase or decrease in the outdoor temperature during the QUB experiment can change the results in the measured overall heat transfer coeffic... [more]

Impact of the Drying Temperature and Grinding Technique on Biomass Grindability
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bulk density, Cup plant, energy demand, European beech, Giant miscanthus, particle size distribution, Scots pine
The process of biomass compaction depends on many factors, related to material and process. One of the most important is the proper fragmentation of the raw material. In most cases, more fragmented raw material makes it easier to achieve the desired quality parameters of pellets or briquettes. While the chipping of biomass prefers moist materials, for grinding, the material needs to be dried. As drying temperature changes the properties of the material, these may affect the grinding process. The aim of this work was to determine the influence of the drying temperature of biomass raw material in the range of 60−140 °C on the biomass grindability. To only determine this effect, without the influence of moisture, grinding was carried out on the material in a dry state. The research was carried out on a mill with a knife and hammer grinding system, which is the most popular in the fragmentation of biomass. The analysis of particle size distribution and bulk density of the obtained material... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: biogas, ceria–zirconia, dry reforming of methane, supercritical synthesis
To achieve a high activity and coking stability of nickel catalysts in dry reforming of methane, materials comprised of ceria−zirconia doped by Ti were investigated as supports. Ceria−zirconia supports doped with titanium were prepared either via the Pechini method or by synthesis in supercritical alcohol media. Ni-containing catalysts were prepared by two techniques: standard incipient wetness impregnation and one-pot synthesis. The catalytic reaction of DRM to synthesis gas was carried out in the 600−750 °C range over 5% wt. Ni/Ce(Ti)ZrO2. Dried and calcined supports and catalysts were characterized by physicochemical methods including N2 adsorption, XRD, Raman, H2-TPR, and HRTEM. Both preparation methods led to formation of solid solution with cubic fluorite-like structure, as well as after addition of Ti. Introduction of Ti should provide improved oxygen storage capacity and mobility of support oxygen. The highest activity was observed with the catalyst of 5% wt. Ni/Ce0.75Ti0.2Zr0.... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: cohesive energy, Morse potential function, nanoparticles
A new generalized Morse potential function with an additional parameter m is proposed to calculate the cohesive energy of nanoparticles. The calculations showed that a generalized Morse potential function using different values for the m and α parameters can be used to predict experimental values for the cohesive energy of nanoparticles. Moreover, the enlargement of the attractive force in the generalized potential function plays an important role in describing the stability of the nanoparticles rather than the softening of the repulsive interaction in the cases when m > 1.

Hydrophilic Coating of Copper Particle Monolayer Wicks for Enhanced Passive Water Transport
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: hydrophilic coating, particle monolayer, thermal management, water transport, wick
Passive water transport through thin-surface wicks made of heat conducting material is important for developing thermal management devices such as heat pipes and spreaders. In this study, we demonstrated the hydrophilic coating of a Cu particle monolayer wick for enhanced water transport. We fabricated a Cu particle monolayer using Cu powder with a nominal particle diameter of 100 μm and determined the particle size distribution using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We observed a remarkable change in the water contact angle on the application of a hydrophilic coating, which demonstrated the enhanced passive water transport. The elemental mapping of Cu, O, and Si obtained by electron probe microanalysis confirmed the deposition of the SiO2-based coating material on each Cu particle. Although the Cu particles were only partially covered by SiO2, a remarkable enhancement in wettability was achieved. Development of Future Compact and Eco-Friendly HVDC Gas-Insulated Systems: Shape Optimization of a DC Spacer Model and Novel Materials Investigation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: electric field distribution, high voltage direct current (HVDC) gas-insulated systems, spacers, surface charges
Testing and validating the electrical insulation performance of full-size compact high-voltage direct current (HVDC) gas-insulated systems, gas-insulated transmission lines (GIL) and gas-insulated switchgears (GIS) is very costly and take long time. Therefore, a reduced scale system was designed and constructed to study thoroughly the spacer’s performance when subjected to higher electric fields under HVDC with different shapes, made of new advanced materials, and housed in new SF6-free gas environment. Since the stationary DC electric field distribution along the spacer is controlled by spacer material conductivity and strongly depends upon its shape, this, the first part of two articles, proposes in a first step based on electric field calculations with COMSOL Multiphysics software, an optimized shape of a spacer model using a standard high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) alumina-filled epoxy material. March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: GIL, optical signal, partial discharge, propagation characteristics, relative irradiance, specification parameter
Partial discharge (PD) leads to the generation of electrical, acoustic, optical, and thermal signals. The propagation characteristics of optical signals in gas insulated metal-enclosed transmission lines (GIL) are the basis of optical detection research. This paper simulates the propagation of PD optical signals in GIL through modeling GIL with different structures and specification parameters. By analyzing the optical parameters on the probe surface and the detection points when the PD source position is different, the influence of the difference in specifications caused by the voltage level on the propagation of the GIL PD optical signal is studied. The results show that the GIL cavity structure will affect the faculae distribution and the relative irradiance (RI) of the detection surface; the PD source position has a huge impact on the faculae distribution on the detection surface, but has little influence on the RI; as the voltage rises, the faculae distribution on the detection su... To study the mechanical properties of argillaceous weakly cemented rock under dynamic loading, a sample reconstituted and graded loading scheme is firstly designed, and then the reorganization rock sample is used as the research object. Using a Hopkinson pressure bar test, the responses of an argillaceous weakly cemented rock mass under different reorganization loads and different impact velocities is studied, and changes in specimen shape after impact are also analyzed. The study found that with increased of the recombination load, the amplitude of the transmitted wave increases. With increasing impact velocity, the rate of the increase in the incident wave amplitude is much larger than that of the transmission wave amplitude. The dynamic stress−strain curve can be divided into a compaction stage, an approximate linear elastic stage, a microcrack growth stage and a strain softening stage. Keywords: capillary-porous materials, porous structure modelling, thermal conductivity
A method of determining the effective thermal conductivity of moist capillary-porous materials has been proposed, in which calculations are carried out while taking into account all components of the system (solid, liquid and gas) at once. The method makes it easy to take into account the way water is distributed in the pore space of the material, either as isolated inclusions (drops) or as a continuous component, depending on the moisture content of the material. In the analysis of heat transport in moist capillary-porous materials, the theory of generalized conductivity is used and the structure of moist material is modeled using an ordered geometric structure consisting of identical unit cells in the form of a cube. An equation is obtained for calculating the effective conductivity of capillary-porous materials with isolated and continuous liquid inclusions, with adiabatic and isothermal division of the unit cell. The accuracy of fitting the rheological model to the properties of actual drilling fluid minimises the errors of the calculated technological parameters applied while drilling oil wells. This article presents the methodology of selecting the optimum drilling fluid rheological model. Apart from classical rheological models, i.e., the Newtonian, Bingham Plastic, Casson, Ostwald de Waele and Herschel−Bulkley models, it has been proposed to consider the Vom Berg and Hahn-Eyring models, which have not been applied to describe drilling fluids so far. In the process of determining rheological parameters for the Bingham Plastic, Casson, Ostwald de Waele and Newtonian models, it is proposed to use a linear regression method. Previous studies have shown that different parameters such as reservoir conditions (e.g., pressure, temperature, and brine chemistry) and wellbore hydraulics influence the scaling tendency of minerals on the surfaces of completion tools in conventional resources. Although different studies have investigated the suitable conditions for the precipitation of scaling minerals, there is still a lack of understanding about the composition of the scaling materials deposited on the surfaces of completion tools in thermal wells. In this study, we presented a laboratory workflow combined with a predictive toolbox to evaluate the scaling tendency of minerals for different downhole conditions in thermal wells. We suggest an alternative to conventional coating methods for accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) cladding. A Zircaloy-4 tube was inserted into metal tubes of different materials and the inserted tubes were subjected to physical force at room temperature. The manufactured tube exhibited a pseudo-single tube (PST) structure and had higher thermal stability than a Zircaloy-4 tube. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images showed that the PST had a uniform and well-bonded interface structure, i.e., no gaps or voids were found at the interface between the inner and outer tubes. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis confirmed that the metal components did not interdiffuse at the interface of the PST, even after being kept at 600 and 900 °C for 1 h and rapidly cooled to room temperature. Unlike pure Zircaloy-4 tubes, Zircaloy-4/stainless use steel (SUS) 316 PST did not show significant structural collapse, even after being stored at 1200 °C for 1 h. Based on these results,... [more]

Triple Solutions of Carreau Thin Film Flow with Thermocapillarity and Injection on an Unsteady Stretching Sheet

Subject: Materials
Keywords: boundary layer, Carreau fluid, thermocapillarity, thin film, triple solutions
Thin films and coatings which have a high demand in a variety of industries—such as manufacturing, optics, and photonics—need regular improvement to sustain industrial productivity. Thus, the present work examined the problem of the Carreau thin film flow and heat transfer with the influence of thermocapillarity over an unsteady stretching sheet, numerically. The sheet is permeable, and there is an injection effect at the surface of the stretching sheet. The similarity transformation reduced the partial differential equations into a system of ordinary differential equations which is then solved numerically by the MATLAB boundary value problem solver bvp4c. The more substantial effect of injection was found to be the reduction of the film thickness at the free surface and development of a better rate of convective heat transfer. However, the increment in the thermocapillarity number thickens the film, reduces the drag force, and weakens the rate of heat transfer past the stretching shee... [more]

To improve the low viscosity and poor lubrication characteristics of high-water-based hydraulic liquid, the abrasion and leakage problems in hydraulic components need to be addressed. In a high water-based hydraulic motor with self-balanced distribution valve (HWBHM-SDV), there are two key friction pairs: the piston-crankshaft pair and piston-swivelling-cylinder (PSC) pair. To study the working performance of the PSC pair in HWBHM-SDV, we firstly designed the structural parameters. We found that, within the working speed 0−100 rpm, the leakage in the PSC pair is mainly caused by pressure-gradient flow, and the influence of the seal will not be significant when the seal length is 24 mm. Then, the friction coefficients of different matching materials were tested.
