On-Load Characteristics of Local and Global Forces in Co-Axial Magnetic Gear with Reference to Additively Manufactured Parts of Modulator
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: additive manufacturing, co-axial magnetic gear, local and global force, Maxwell Stress Tensor, soft magnetic composite materials, structural analysis
The paper presents an analysis of local and global forces acting on the ferromagnetic material of a modulator in a co-axial magnetic gear, taking several design variants and the impact of loading into account. The analyses include a modulator with cores manufactured from a soft-magnetic composite material and two variants made from electrical steel with laminations stacked in different directions. Variations of local forces acting on individual pole pieces of the modulator are analyzed at different loads, showing that the force spectra are subject to significant variation with an increasing load. The presented magnetostatic analyses are extended by structural analysis that provides estimation of stress and displacement for the modulator assembled from additively manufactured acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)-plastic parts. The analysis carried out for the least favorable design case of the magnetic circuit of the modulator shows that an application of the technology is significantl... [more]

On Mixed Convection Squeezing Flow of Nanofluids
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: gamma-alumina nanoparticles, MHD effect, mixed convection, numerical solutions, squeezing flow
In this article, the impact of effective Prandtl number model on 3D incompressible flow in a rotating channel is proposed under the influence of mixed convection. The coupled nonlinear system of partial differential equations is decomposed into a highly nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations with aid of suitable similarity transforms. Then, the solution of a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations is obtained numerically by using Runge−Kutta−Fehlberg (RKF) method. Furthermore, the surface drag force C f and the rate of heat transfer N u are portrayed numerically. The effects of different emerging physical parameters such as Hartmann number (M), Reynold’s number (Re), squeezing parameter ( β ), mixed convection parameter λ , and volume fraction ( φ ) are also incorporated graphically for γ — alumina. Due to the higher viscosity and thermal conductivity ethylene-based nanofluids, it is observed to be an effective common bas... [more]

Ultra-Lightweight Cement Slurry to Seal Wellbore of Poor Wellbore Stability
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cement slurry, concrete, lightweight cement slurry, perlite, sedimentation stability, segregation, ultra-lightweight cement slurry, wellbore stability
The article presents the recipe for ultra-lightweight cement slurry for wellbore sealing. In ordinary lightweight cement slurries, the addition of microspheres and a large amount of water are used to maintain rheological parameters. This is a problem because the light particles of microspheres segregate. The cement sheath from such a cement slurry has an anisotropic microstructure and does not stabilize the casing column. In the new ultra-light cement slurry, 60% aluminosilicate microspheres and a large amount of water were used. The ultra-light weight slurry has a density below 1.2 g/cm3. This cement slurry does not segregates and in the sedimentation stability test has the same density at all measuring points. The cement slurry, despite the larger amount of water, has the same filtration as the control sample. The technological parameters of the slurry are adapted to the borehole conditions. Cement slurry is a ready-made application to seal a borehole with poor wellbore stability und... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon nanotubes, cement slurry, mechanical strength, nanosilica, nanosized alumina, set cement, wellbore stability
For several decades, constant research has been performed in the world in order to obtain more durable, tighter, or less environmentally harmful binding materials which could be used to seal casing strings in boreholes. There is an increasing search for innovative solutions allowing the production of the highest possible class of binding cements. Since the beginning of the 21st century, one thing which has become synonymous with development is nanotechnology—a dynamically growing branch of science involving both the design, production, and testing of structures with the size of billionths of a metre. Among other things, a set cement stone is made of the grains of hydrated calcium silicates and calcium aluminates, between which there are pore spaces. Fine grains of nanoparticles can successfully settle inside these spaces, causing a decrease in the porosity and permeability of cement matrix. Spatial Differences in Carbon Intensity in Polish Households
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon intensity, index decomposition analysis, Kaya identity, spatial analysis
Knowledge about the driving forces behind greenhouse gasses (GHG) emissions is crucial for informed and evidence-based policy towards mitigation of GHG emission and changing production and consumption patterns. Both national and regional-level authorities are capable of addressing their actions more effectively if they have information about the spatial distribution of phenomena related to the policies they conduct. In this context, the main aim of this paper is to explain the regional differences in carbon intensity in Poland. The differences in carbon intensity between regions and the national average were analysed using index decomposition analysis (IDA). Aggregate carbon intensity for regional economies as well as the carbon intensity of households was investigated. For both levels of analysis: total emissions and emission from households economic development is the key factor responsible for the inter-regional differences in carbon emission per capita. In the case of total emissio... [more]

Enhanced Thermoelectric Characteristics of Ag2Se Nanoparticle Thin Films by Embedding Silicon Nanowires
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: silicon nanowires, silver selenide nanoparticles, thermoelectric, thin film
A solution-processable Ag2Se nanoparticle thin film (NPTF) is a prospective thermoelectric material for plastic-based thermoelectric generators, but its low electrical conductivity hinders the fabrication of high performance plastic-based thermoelectric generators. In this study, we design Ag2Se NPTFs embedded with silicon nanowires (SiNWs) to improve their thermoelectric characteristics. The Seebeck coefficients are −233 and −240 µV/K, respectively, for a Ag2Se NPTF alone and a Ag2Se NPTF embedded with SiNWs. For the Ag2Se NPTF embedded with SiNWs, the electrical conductivity is improved from 0.15 to 18.5 S/m with the embedment of SiNWs. The thermal conductivities are determined by a lateral thermal conductivity measurement for nanomaterials and the thermal conductivities are 0.62 and 0.84 W/(m·K) for a Ag2Se NPTF alone and a Ag2Se NPTF embedded with SiNWs, respectively. Due to the significant increase in the electrical conductivity and the insignificant increase in its thermal conduc... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio-based matrices, bio-based PCMs, buildings and constructions, energy storage applications, wood
Due to growing consciousness regarding the environmental impact of fossil-based and non-sustainable materials in construction and building applications, there have been an increasing interest in bio-based and degradable materials in this industry. Due to their excellent chemical and thermo-physical properties for thermal energy storage, bio-based phase change materials (BPCMs) have started to attract attention worldwide for low to medium temperature applications. The ready availability, renewability, and low carbon footprint of BPCMs make them suitable for a large spectrum of applications. Up to now, most of the BPCMs have been incorporated into inorganic matrices with only a few attempts to set the BPCMs into bio-matrices. The current paper is the first comprehensive review on BPCMs incorporation in wood and wood-based materials, as renewable and sustainable materials in buildings, to enhance the thermal mass in the environmentally-friendly buildings. The Impact of Additives on the Main Properties of Phase Change Materials
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cycling stability, latent heat, melting time, phase change materials, solid–liquid transition, thermal conductivity, thermal stability
The main drawback of phase change materials (PCMs) is their low thermal conductivity, which limits the possibilities of a wide range of implementations. Therefore, the researchers, as found in the literature, proposed several methods to improve the thermal conductivity of PCMs, including inserting high thermal conductivity materials in nano-, micro-, and macro-scales, as well as encapsulation of PCMs. However, these inserts impact the other properties of PCMs like latent heat, melting temperature, thermal stability, and cycling stability. Hence, this paper aims to review the available in the open literature research on the main properties of enhanced PCMs that undergo solid−liquid transition. It is found that inserting high thermal conductivity materials and encapsulation results in improved thermal conductivity of PCMs, but it decreases their latent heat. Moreover, the insertions can act as nucleating agents, and the supercooling degree can be reduced. Some of the thermal conductivity... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: life cycle assessment (LCA), PCM, phase change materials, Speicher LCA, Storage LCA Tool, thermal energy storage
New materials and technologies have become the main drivers for reducing energy demand in the building sector in recent years. Energy efficiency can be reached by utilization of materials with thermal storage potential; among them, phase change materials (PCMs) seem to be promising. If they are used in combination with solar collectors in heating applications or with water chillers or in chilled ceilings in cooling applications, PCMs can provide ecological benefits through energy savings during the building’s operational phase. However, their environmental value should be analyzed by taking into account their whole lifecycle. The purpose of this paper is the assessment of PCMs at the material level as well as at higher levels, namely the component and building levels. Life cycle assessment analyses are based on information from PCM manufacturers and building energy simulations. Subject: Materials
Keywords: EROI, large hydropower, solar, transition to renewables, Wind
Whether renewable energy sources (RES) will provide sufficient energy surplus to entirely power complex modern societies is under discussion. We contribute to this debate by estimating the current global average energy return on energy invested (EROI) for the five RES technologies with the highest potential of electricity generation from the comprehensive and internally consistent estimations of their material requirements at three distinct energy system boundaries: standard farm-gate (EROIst), final at consumer point-of-use (EROIfinal), and extended (including indirect investments, EROIext). EROIst levels found fall within the respective literature ranges. Expanding the boundaries closer to the system level, we find that only large hydroelectricity would currently have a high EROIext ~ 6.5:1, while the rest of variable RES would be below 3:1: onshore wind (2.9:1), offshore wind (2.3:1), solar Photovoltaic (PV) (1.8:1), and solar Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) (<1:1). Keywords: perovskite, stability, supercapacitors
A supercapacitor is a potential energy system that will be a part of an efficient storage device of renewable energy, such as a small battery and a large energy storage system (ESS), etc. However, a lot of efforts have been devoted to improving stability. Generally, ABO3-type perovskite structure has been studied as an electrode and/or an oxide ion-conducting electrolyte for solid oxide fuel cells with stable structural stability at high temperatures. In this study, perovskite material (La0.8Sr0.2Mn0.5Co0.5O3-δ. LSMCO) was added as a component of the supercapacitor electrode for enhanced stability. According to electrochemical measurements, at 5 mV/s, the specific capacitance of the graphene-based electrode (G95) is 68 F/g, and the electrode mixed with perovskite (G70L25) is 55 F/g. Nonetheless, the standard deviation of the capacitance value of G70L25 is smaller than that of G95. Thermal Storage Using Metallic Phase Change Materials for Bus Heating—State of the Art of Electric Buses and Requirements for the Storage System
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cabin heating, electric buses, Latent Heat Storage, metallic phase change material, thermal energy storage
Battery-powered electric buses currently face the challenges of high cost and limited range, especially in winter conditions, where interior heating is required. To face both challenges, the use of thermal energy storage based on metallic phase change materials for interior heating, also called thermal high-performance storage, is considered. By replacing the battery capacity through such an energy storage system, which is potentially lighter, smaller, and cheaper than the batteries used in buses, an overall reduction in cost and an increase of range in winter conditions could be reached. Since the use of thermal high-performance storage as a heating system in a battery-powered electric bus is a new approach, the requirements for such a system first need to be known to be able to proceed with further steps. To find these requirements, a review of the relevant state of the art of battery-powered electric buses, with a focus on heating systems, was done. Other relevant aspects were vehic... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: activation energy, charging current, electric conductivity, silicone rubber, surface potential decay
The temperature and field dependencies of electric conductivities of two types of silicone rubber-based polymers intended for use in high voltage direct current applications are presented and discussed. The conductivities obtained with the standard method by measuring a current through the material sample placed between metallic electrodes in response to the applied voltage are compared with those deduced from the measured potential decay on pre-charged material surface in an open circuit configuration. The measurements were conducted in the range of the applied electric field strength (0.5−5) kV/mm and temperatures ranging from 22 °C to 70 °C. It is shown that the values of the conductivities obtained by the two methods are in agreement and their temperature dependences obey Arrhenius law yielding similar activation energies.

Keywords: fracture morphology, Longmaxi Shale (China), shale laminae, shear strength characteristics, tensile strength
Laminae are well developed in shale and generally influence fracture propagation during hydraulic fracturing. Hence, comprehensively understanding the tension and shear behaviors of shale laminae is crucial. There have been limited systematic studies thus far on the tensile and shear strength as well as fracture morphology of shale laminae. In this study, the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Shale (China) was investigated via Brazilian tensile and angle-varied plate shear tests. Five lamina types were tested, i.e., calcite (Cal), pyrite (Py), organic-enriched (Oc), the interface between Cal and Oc (Cal-Oc), and the interface between Py and Oc (Py-Oc) laminae. Results showed that the tensile strength was in the range 0.43−8.22 MPa, mainly in the order of Cal > Py > Cal-Oc > Py-Oc > Oc. The modes of fracture morphology were highly related to the occurrence, continuity, and mineralogy fillings of laminae. Shear strength parameters were within the range 22.50−29.64 MPa for cohesion and 37.29−43.60°... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: cable accessory, cable termination, finite element analysis, HVDC cable system breakdown, hyperelastic material model, interface contact pressure, rubber stress cone
The most critical positions of a prefabricated cable accessory, from the electrical point of view, are the interfaces between the stress cone and its surroundings. Accordingly, the contact pressure on those interfaces needs to be carefully designed to assure both good dielectric strength and smooth installation of the stress cone. Nevertheless, since stress cones made from rubber are under large deformation after installation, their internal stress distribution is neither practical to measure directly by planting sensors, nor feasible to compute accurately with the conventional theory of linear structural mechanics. This paper presents one sophisticated method for computing the mechanical stress distribution in rubber stress cones of cable accessories by employing hyperelastic models in a computation model based on the finite element method. This method offers accurate results for rubber bodies of complex geometries and large deformations. Based on the method, a case study of a composi... [more]

Installation costs of ground heat exchangers (GHEs) make the technology based on ground-coupled heat pumps (GCHPs) less competitive than air source heat pumps for space heating and cooling in mild climates. A smart solution is the dual source heat pump (DSHP) which switches between the air and ground to reduce frosting issues and save the system against extreme temperatures affecting air-mode. This work analyses the coupling of DSHP with a flat-panel (FP) horizontal GHE (HGHE) and a mixture of sand and phase change materials (PCMs). From numerical simulations and considering the energy demand of a real building in Northern Italy, different combinations of heat pumps (HPs) and trench backfill material were compared. In perovskite photovoltaics (PSCs), the role of the hole transporting material (HTM) is highly important as it significantly influents to the global device’s performance and stability. Hole transporter ensures the extraction of hole at the perovskite/HTM interface and transport it towards the cathode.
