Occurrence of Linear Discontinuous Deformations in Upper Silesia (Poland) in Conditions of Intensive Mining Extraction—Case Study
Piotr Strzałkowski, Katarzyna Szafulera
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discontinuous deformations, fissure, graben, mining subsidence
Currently, linear discontinuous deformations in mining areas are an important issue, both due to the frequency of their occurrence and the threat they pose to general safety. This paper presents a case study of an occurrence of such a deformation. The analyses of the geological and mining conditions, as well as the conducted calculations presented herein, indicate that the cause of the deformation was the occurrence of high-value horizontal tensile strains. It was triggered by mining exploitation carried out with caving in three seams at depths between 200 and 545 m. An additional factor conductive to the creation of the deformation was the tectonic structure of the rock mass. The subject matter of the paper is significant given the growing number of discontinuous linear deformations occurring on the surface due to underground mining—even if the mining was conducted at great depths. They were formed as a result of intensive underground mining operations and the occurrence of high-value... [more]

Jun Liu, Jinchun Chen, Chao Wang, Zhang Chen, Xinglei Liu
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cost-income model, energy internet, market entities, Nash equilibria, tripartite game
As an important driving force to promote the energy revolution, the emergence of the energy internet has provided new ideas for the marketization and flexibility of multi-energy transactions. How to realize multi-energy joint trading is a key issue in the development of the energy market. An urban energy internet market trading model among energy suppliers, energy service providers and the large users in the urban area, based on tripartite game theory, is established in this paper. Considering the cost−income function of each market entity and the basic market trading mechanism, a new game-tree search method is proposed to solve the Nash equilibria for the game model. The Nash equilibria of the tripartite game can be obtained, and the market transaction status corresponding to the Nash equilibria is analyzed from the perspective of the market transactions. The multi-energy joint transaction and market equilibria can be easily implemented for the bids and offers of the multiple energy e... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy production, river flow, seasonal forecast, small hydropower plant
The operation feasibility of small hydropower plants in mountainous sites is subjected to the run-of-river flow, which is also dependent on a high variability in precipitation and snow cover. Moreover, the management of this kind of system has to be performed with some particular operation conditions of the plant (e.g., turbine minimum and maximum discharge) but also some environmental flow requirements. In this context, a technological climate service is conceived in a tight connection with end users, perfectly answering the needs of the management of small hydropower systems in a pilot area, and providing a forecast of the river streamflow together with other operation data. This paper presents an overview of the service but also a set of lessons learnt related to the features, requirements, and considerations to bear in mind from the point of view of climate service developers. In addition, the outcomes give insight into how this kind of service could change the traditional manageme... [more]

Keywords: energy saving for HVAC, experimental results, GAHE, ground-to-air heat exchangers, models for calculating the thermal efficiency of ground-to-air heat exchangers, preheating and precooling for HVAC
The article analyzes a ground-to-air heat exchanger (GAHE) for a mechanical ventilation system in a building. The heat exchanger’s performance was evaluated in northeastern Poland between May and August of 2016, 2017, and 2018. In spring and summer, the GAHE can be theoretically used to precool air for HVAC systems. The aim of the study was to compare the real-world performance of GAHE with its theoretical performance determined based on the distribution of ground temperature and the temperature at the GAHE outlet modeled in compliance with Standard PN-EN 16798-5 1:2017-07. The modeled values differed considerably from real-world data in May and June, but the model demonstrated satisfactory data fit in July and August. In all years, the modeled average monthly air temperature at the GAHE outlet was 8.3 °C below real-world values in May, but the above difference was only 1.1 °C in August. The developed mathematical model is simple and easy to use, and it can be deployed already in the p... [more]

Haiqing Liu, Zhiqiao Li, Yuancheng Li
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conditional generation network, data set imbalance, LightGBM, power theft detection, stacked convolution noise reduction encoder
In recent years, various types of power theft incidents have occurred frequently, and the training of the power-stealing detection model is susceptible to the influence of the imbalanced data set and the data noise, which leads to errors in power-stealing detection. Therefore, a power-stealing detection model is proposed, which is based on Improved Conditional Generation Adversarial Network (CWGAN), Stacked Convolution Noise Reduction Autoencoder (SCDAE) and Lightweight Gradient Boosting Decision Machine (LightGBM). The model performs Generation- Adversarial operations on the original unbalanced power consumption data to achieve the balance of electricity data, and avoids the interference of the imbalanced data set on classifier training. In addition, the convolution method is used to stack the noise reduction auto-encoder to achieve dimension reduction of power consumption data, extract data features and reduce the impact of random noise. Finally, LightGBM is used for power theft dete... [more]

Seok-Cheol Ko, Tae-Hee Han, Sung-Hun Lim
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bridge type, flux linkage, flux-coupling, simultaneous quench, superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL)
A bridge type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with simultaneous quench using two high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) elements and two coils was fabricated to analyze the fault current limiting characteristics. Before and after the fault occurrence, the current limiting operation and the voltage waveforms of each device were compared according to the change of the input voltage. We also analyzed flux linkages and instantaneous powers of the bridge type SFCL with simultaneous quench using flux-coupling composed of HTSC elements with different critical currents. During the fault period, the magnetization power area and the flux linkage’s operating range variation due to the magnetizing current were compared with each other.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arbitrage operation, customer load clustering, energy management in smart grid, energy storage system (ESS), peak shaving operation, time-of-use (TOU) tariff
This study proposes a methodology to develop adaptive operational strategies of customer-installed Energy Storage Systems (ESS) based on the classification of customer load profiles. In addition, this study proposes a methodology to characterize and classify customer load profiles based on newly proposed Time-of-Use (TOU) indices. The TOU indices effectively distribute daily customer load profiles on multi-dimensional domains, indicating customer energy consumption patterns under the TOU tariff. The K-means and Self-Organizing Map (SOM) sophisticated clustering methods were applied for classification. Furthermore, this study demonstrates peak shaving and arbitrage operations of ESS with current supporting polices in South Korea. Actual load profiles accumulated from customers under the TOU rate were used to validate the proposed methodologies. The simulation results show that the TOU index-based clustering effectively classifies load patterns into ‘M-shaped’ and ‘square wave-shaped’ lo... [more]
Effects of the Impeller Blade with a Slot Structure on the Centrifugal Pump Performance
Hongliang Wang, Bing Long, Chuan Wang, Chen Han, Linjian Li
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade slot, centrifugal pump, numerical simulation, orthogonal test
An impeller blade with a slot structure can affect the velocity distribution in the impeller flow passage of the centrifugal pump, thus affecting the pump’s performance. Various slot structure geometric parameter combinations were tested in this study to explore this relationship: slot position p, slot width b1, slot deflection angle β, and slot depth h with (3−4) levels were selected for each factor on an L16 orthogonal test table. The results show that b1 and h are the major factors influencing pump performance under low and rated flow conditions, while p is the major influencing factor under the large flow condition. The slot structure close to the front edge of the impeller blade can change the low-pressure region of the suction inlet of the impeller flow passage, thus improving the fluid velocity distribution in the impeller. Optimal slot parameter combinations according to the actual machining precision may include a small slot width b1, slot depth h of ¼ b, slot deflection angle... [more]
Underfrequency Load Shedding: An Innovative Algorithm Based on Fuzzy Logic
Robert Małkowski, Janusz Nieznański
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive load shedding, fuzzy logic, islanding operation, underfrequency load shedding
In contemporary power systems, the load shedding schemes are typically based on disconnecting a pre-specified amount of load after the frequency drops below a predetermined value. The actual conditions at the time of disturbance may largely differ from the assumptions, which can lead to non-optimal or ineffective operation of the load shedding scheme. For many years, increasing the effectiveness of the underfrequency load shedding (UFLS) schemes has been the subject of research around the world. Unfortunately, the proposed solutions often require costly technical resources and/or large amounts of real-time data monitoring. This paper puts forth an UFLS scheme characterized by increased effectiveness in the case of large disturbances and reduced disconnected power in the case of small and medium disturbances compared to the conventional load-shedding solutions. These advantages are achieved by replacing time-consuming consecutive load dropping with the simultaneous load dropping mechani... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data analysis, demand response (DR), load profile clustering, k-means, targeting of customer
Due to the heterogeneity of demand response behaviors among customers, selecting a suitable segment is one of the key factors for the efficient and stable operation of the demand response (DR) program. Most utilities recognize the importance of targeted enrollment. Customer targeting in DR programs is normally implemented based on customer segmentation. Residential customers are characterized by low electricity consumption and large variability across times of consumption. These factors are considered to be the primary challenges in household load profile segmentation. Existing customer segmentation methods have limitations in reflecting daily consumption of electricity, peak demand timings, and load patterns. In this study, we propose a new clustering method to segment customers more effectively in residential demand response programs and thereby, identify suitable customer targets in DR. The approach can be described as a two-stage k-means procedure including consumption features and... [more]

Keywords: address space layout randomization (ASLR), code-reuse attack, rerandomization, return-oriented programming (ROP), seamless memory randomization
Nowadays, various computing services are often hosted on cloud platforms for their availability and cost effectiveness. However, such services are frequently exposed to vulnerabilities. Therefore, many countermeasures have been invented to defend against software hacking. At the same time, more complicated attacking techniques have been created. Among them, code-reuse attacks are still an effective means of abusing software vulnerabilities. Although state-of-the-art address space layout randomization (ASLR) runtime-based solutions provide a robust way to mitigate code-reuse attacks, they have fundamental limitations; for example, the need for system modifications, and the need for recompiling source codes or restarting processes. These limitations are not appropriate for mission-critical services because a seamless operation is very important. In this paper, we propose a novel ASLR technique to provide memory rerandomization without interrupting the process execution. In addition, we d... [more]

Keywords: brick 1, energetic rehabilitation 4, heat flow 3, moisture 2, non-destructive test 5
To improve the energy performance of restored cultural heritage buildings, it is necessary to know the real values of thermal conductivity of its envelope, mainly of the facades, and to study an intervention strategy that does not interfere with the preservation of their cultural and architectural values. The brick walls with which a large number of these buildings were constructed, usually absorb water, leading to their deterioration, whereas the heat transmission through them is much higher (than when they are dry). This aspect is often not taken into account when making interventions to improve the energy efficiency of these buildings, which makes them ineffective. This article presents the results of an investigation that analyzes thermal behavior buildings of the early 20th century in the city of Zamora, Spain. It has been concluded that avoiding moisture in brick walls not only prevents its deterioration but represents a significant energy saving, especially in buildings that hav... [more]

Keywords: antiparallel diode, dual active bridge, high-frequency transformer, power electronic transformer, SiC devices
This paper discusses the benefits of using silicon carbide (SiC) devices in a three-stage modular power electronic transformer. According to the requirements to be fulfilled by each stage, the second one (the DC/DC isolation converter) presents the most estimable improvements to be gained from the use of SiC devices. Therefore, this paper is focused on this second stage, implemented with a SiC-based dual active bridge. Selection of the SiC devices is detailed tackling the efficiency improvement which can be obtained when they are co-packed with SiC antiparallel Schottky diodes in addition to their intrinsic body diode. This efficiency improvement is dependent on the dual active bridge operation point. Hence, a simple device loss model is presented to assess the efficiency improvement and understand the reasons for this dependence. Experimental results from a 5-kW Dual Active Bridge prototype have been obtained to validate the model. The dual active bridge converter is also tested as pa... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANPC, hybrid SiC and Si, loss analysis
Silicon carbide (SiC) devices have excellent performance, such as higher switching frequency and lower switching loss compared with traditional silicon (Si) devices. The application of SiC devices in inverters can achieve higher efficiency and power density. In recent years, the production process of SiC devices has become more mature, but the cost is still several times that of traditional Si devices. In order to balance cost and efficiency, replacing only some of the Si devices with SiC devices in a topology is a better choice. This paper proposed a high-efficiency hybrid active neutral point clamped (ANPC) three-level inverter which has only two SiC devices and the other devices are Si devices. A specific modulation strategy was applied to concentrate switching losses on the SiC devices and reduce the on-state loss through parallel operation during freewheeling intervals. Theoretical efficiency curves and experimental verification of the proposed hybrid scheme with Si-only and SiC-o... [more]

Compared to comparably sized conventional light duty gasoline vehicles (CLDGVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) may offer benefits of improved energy economy, reduced emissions, and the flexibility to use electricity as an energy source. PHEVs operate in either charge depleting (CD) or charge sustaining (CS) mode; the engine has the ability to turn on and off; and the engine can have multiple cold starts. A method is demonstrated for quantifying the real-world activity, energy use, and emissions of PHEVs, taking into account these operational characteristics and differences in electricity generation resource mix. A 2013 Toyota Prius plug-in was measured using a portable emission measurement system. Vehicle specific power (VSP) based modal average energy use and emission rates are inferred to assess trends in energy use and emissions with respect to engine load and for comparisons of engine on versus engine off, and cold start versus hot stabilized running. Keywords: HVDC, maintenance, missing energy export, offshore wind energy, transmission system, voltage source converter (VSC)
For the grid connection of offshore wind farms today, in many cases a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) connection to the shore is implemented. The scheduled maintenance of the offshore and onshore HVDC stations makes up a significant part of the operational costs of the connected wind farms. The main factor for the maintenance cost is the lost income from the missing energy yield (indirect maintenance costs). In this study, we show an in-depth analysis of the used components, maintenance cycles, maintenance work for the on- and offshore station, and the risks assigned in prolonging the maintenance cycle of the modular multilevel converter (MMC). In addition, we investigate the potential to shift the start date of the maintenance work, based on a forecast of the energy generation. Our findings indicate that an optimized maintenance design with respect to the maintenance behavior of an HVDC energy export system can decrease the maintenance-related energy losses (indirect maintenance co... Keywords: energy efficiency management, energy efficiency operational indicator, specialized vessels
Limitation of CO2 emission is one of the main goals and regulations introduced by the international institutions’ rules. In the case of ships using oil-related and gas fuels this problem is dealt with by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) introducing the methodology of Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) determining for ships being under exploitation. The methodology allows for determining EEOI for seven types of ships, for which the value of this index depends on the amount of transported cargo or number of passengers, type of and amount of fuel used, as well as distance travelled by the ship. Such a methodology cannot be used for the specialized ships, whose exploitation tasks are different to the ships of the trade fleet that transport the cargo or the passengers. The methodology allows for determining EEOI for seven types of ships and it does not include specialized ships. The article presents a new methodology of determining EEOI for specialized ships that ta... [more]

Keywords: ash, combustion wastes, municipal solid waste, winter season
This paper presents the morphological composition of fraction <80 mm, being separated from municipal solid waste (MSW) and delivered in the winter season to the 21 mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) plants throughout several regions of Poland. This fraction is hereinafter referred to as OFMSW (organic fraction of municipal solid waste). Their properties are considered while using parameters such as: moisture, loss on ignition and organic carbon content, as well as moisture and loss on ignition of screen fractions <10 mm and 10−20 mm that are found within. The main aim of this research was to test waste from 21 industrial installations, and to prove that ash content (fine fractions) in waste intended for MBT was about 1/3 of the mass of overall OFMSW mass. These quantities exceed the limits that were approved for the correct operation of MBT installations. The effect of their high content in MSW during the heating season is low moisture (from 25.4% to 58.3%) and the low loss on... [more]

Keywords: green building, key performance indicators, operations monitoring, SMART principle, user behavior
Released green building evaluation standards for operation stage include a huge number of indicators, which are very comprehensive and systematic. However, the indicators of these standards are very complicated and a large amount of time and manpower are consumed for their evaluation. To evaluate the operational performance of green buildings more practically and efficiently, some studies collect the operational data for part of the indicators (mainly focusing on building energy performance, indoor environmental quality or occupant satisfaction), which are too rough to evaluate the performance of green building. This paper proposed a total of 27 key performance indicators (KPIs) for green building operations monitoring. The number of proposed indicators is much fewer than the evaluation standards, as well as suitable for long-term monitoring, which can dramatically reduce evaluation time and cost. On the other hand, the indicators involving Outdoor environmental quality, Indoor environ... [more]

Keywords: load following, nuclear reactors, profile operation, PWR, SMR, VRES
The electricity market is undergoing significant change with the increasing deployment of Variable Renewable Energy Sources (VRES) and the adoption of policies to electrify transport, heating and industry, which will continue to increase demands on all conventional power plants including nuclear. The increase in VRES also puts additional emphasis on services such as inertia and frequency response that only conventional plants, including nuclear, are readily able to meet. This study discusses what factors limit the ability of nuclear power plants to provide flexible response and how the UK nuclear power plants might be affected by the changes in future demand profiles. The study focuses on what impact there will be on current Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) plants, though it also considers Small Modular Pressurised Water Reactor plants which might offer benefits with respect to improved power manoeuvrability. The main finding is that the most important attribute is the minimum power lev... [more]

Keywords: heat pump operation, sector integration, smart energy systems, time-dependent flexibility
The integration of multiple energy sectors, such as electricity, heating, and mobility, into an overall smart energy system is a key part of the journey towards a fossil-free energy system. Exploiting the operational flexibility of these sectors will lead to the efficient operation of the integrated smart energy system. The use of heat pumps for the heating supply based on renewable energy resources is reasonable in many cases. Combining heat pumps with thermal storages, these systems can offer flexibility to an energy system based on fluctuating power generation. Flexibility can be defined as the capability to adapt an initial schedule in order to support the energy system in terms of the provision of power reserve. In this paper, an approach to determine the time-dependent flexibility potential of a heat pump system is presented. The optimization-based approach considers all the constraints resulting from the system topology, including the required heating demand of the connected bui... [more]
Non-Cooperative Indirect Energy Trading with Energy Storage Systems for Mitigation of Demand Response Participation Uncertainty

Keywords: demand response (DR), energy storage system (ESS), energy trading, game theory, monte carlo simulation (MCS), non-cooperative game, uncertainty
This work focuses on the demand response (DR) participation using the energy storage system (ESS). A probabilistic Gaussian mixture model based on market operating results Monte, Carlo Simulation (MCS), is required to respond to an urgent DR signal. However, there is considerable uncertainty in DR forecasting, which occasionally fails to predict DR events. Because this failure is attributable to the intermittency of the DR signals, a non-cooperative game model that is useful for decision-making on DR participation is proposed. The game is conducted with each player holding a surplus of energy but incomplete information. Consequently, each player can share unused electricity during DR events, engaging in indirect energy trading (IET) under a non-cooperative game framework. The results of the game, the Nash equilibrium (N.E.), are verified using a case study with relevant analytical data from the campus of Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) in Korea. March 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: full-bridge converter, power converter, PS-PWM (Phase-shift pulse-width modulation)
A phase-shift pulse-width modulation converter is studied and investigated for railway vehicle or solar cell power converter applications with wide voltage operation. For railway vehicle applications, input voltage range of dc converters is requested to have 30−40% voltage variation of the nominal input voltage. The nominal input voltages of dc converters on railway vehicles applications may be 37.5 V, 48 V, 72 V, 96 V and 110 V. Therefore, a new dc converter with wide input voltage operation from 25 to 150 V is presented to withstand different nominal input voltage levels such as 37.5−110 V on railway power units. To realize wide input voltage operation, an auxiliary switch and auxiliary transformer windings are used on output side of conventional full-bridge converter to have different voltage gains under different input voltage values. Phase-shift pulse-width modulation is adopted in the developed dc converter to accomplish soft switching operation on power switches. To confirm and... [more]
