Evaluation of Two-Column Air Separation Processes Based on Exergy Analysis
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: air separation, cryogenic distillation, exergy analyssis, exergy destruction, Exergy Efficiency, process simulation
Cryogenic air separation processes are widely used for the large-scale production of nitrogen and oxygen. The most widely used design for this process involves two distillation columns operating at different pressures. This work focuses on the selection of suitable cryogenic air separation process by evaluating seven alternative designs of the two-column air separation process based on detailed exergy analysis. The feed conditions (500 tons/h, and 50% relative humidity of air), product purities (99 mole% for both nitrogen and oxygen), and operational conditions (pressures of both distillation columns) are kept same in all designs. The two cryogenic distillation columns in each configuration are heat-integrated to eliminate the need for external utilities. Steady-state simulation results are used to calculate the exergy efficiency (%) of each equipment as well as its contribution toward the overall exergy destruction rate (kW) of the process. The results show that the compression sectio... [more]

The Saturated Water Content of Liquid Propane in Equilibrium with the sII Hydrate
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: flow assurance, propane, structure type II hydrate, water content
In order to prevent solids from forming during the transportation and handling of liquid propane, C3H8(l), the fluid is dehydrated to a level below the water dew point concentration for the coldest operating temperature. Thus, accurate calculation of the saturation water content for C3H8 is important to determine the designed allowable concentration in liquid C3H8. In this work, we measured the water content of liquid C3H8 in the presence of the structure II hydrate from p = 1.081 to 40.064 MPa and T = 241.95 to 276.11 K using a tunable diode absorption spectroscopy technique. The water content results were modelled using the reference quality reduced Helmholtz equations and the Sloan et al. model for the non-hydrate and hydrate phases, respectively. Calculations show a good agreement (an average difference of less than 12 ppm) when compared to our measurements. Furthermore, the model was also used for calculating the dissociation temperatures for three phase loci, where a relative dif... [more]

Techno-Economic Analysis of Glazed, Unglazed and Evacuated Tube Solar Water Heaters
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: evacuated tube, feasibility, glazed, solar water heater, subcontinent, unglazed
In the residential sector, a great part of the electricity goes into heating water by electric water heaters, which results in high CO2 emissions as well as an unprecedented increase in electricity demand leading to an energy crisis. This study offers solar water heaters as a more economical and efficient replacement for electric water heaters. The present study is aimed at investigating the potential for solar water heaters in the subcontinent, especially in India. A feasibility analysis is performed for seven cities in the subcontinent, namely Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Assam, Gujrat and Madhya Pradesh. Simulated results are based on a solar fraction, equity payback, multiple collectors (one, two or three), horizontal and tilted, type of collector (evacuated tube, glazed and unglazed), electricity saved and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction. The collector’s area is made such that it should receive at least 50% of the solar fraction. The range of payback period varies from five... [more]

Coupling Hydrothermal Carbonization with Anaerobic Digestion for Sewage Sludge Treatment: Influence of HTC Liquor and Hydrochar on Biomethane Production
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biochemical methane potential, biomethane, HTC liquor, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, sewage sludge
The present study addresses the coupling of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) with anaerobic digestion (AD) in wastewater treatment plants. The improvement in biomethane production due to the recycling back to the anaerobic digester of HTC liquor and hydrochar generated from digested sludge is investigated and proved. Mixtures of different compositions of HTC liquor and hydrochar, as well as individual substrates, were tested. The biomethane yield reached 102 ± 3 mL CH4 g−1 COD when the HTC liquor was cycled back to the AD and treated together with primary and secondary sludge. Thus, the biomethane production was almost doubled compared to that of the AD of primary and secondary sludge (55 ± 20 mL CH4 g−1 COD). The benefit is even more significant when both the HTC liquor and the hydrochar were fed to the AD of primary and secondary sludge. The biomethane yield increased up to 187 ± 18 mL CH4 g−1 COD when 45% of hydrochar, with respect to the total feedstock, was added. These results hi... [more]

Optimal Design of High-Frequency Induction Heating Apparatus for Wafer Cleaning Equipment Using Superheated Steam
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cleaning equipment, high frequency, induction heating (IH), LCL resonant network, superheated steam (SHS), titanium (Ti), wafer cleaning
In this study, wafer cleaning equipment was designed and fabricated using the induction heating (IH) method and a short-time superheated steam (SHS) generation process. To prevent problems arising from the presence of particulate matter in the fluid flow region, pure grade 2 titanium (Ti) R50400 was used in the wafer cleaning equipment for heating objects via induction. The Ti load was designed and manufactured with a specific shape, along with the resonant network, to efficiently generate high-temperature steam by increasing the residence time of the fluid in the heating object. The IH performance of various shapes of heating objects made of Ti was analyzed and the results were compared. In addition, the heat capacity required to generate SHS was mathematically calculated and analyzed. The SHS heating performance was verified by conducting experiments using the designed 2.2 kW wafer cleaning equipment. The performance of the proposed pure Ti-based SHS generation system was found to be... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: hybrid microgrids, lead–acid batteries, lithium batteries, load shifting, Optimization
In developing countries, electrification in remote areas, where access to energy is limited or null, has been one of the biggest challenges in recent years. Isolated microgrids with renewable generation are an efficient alternative for the energy supply in these areas. The objective of this work was to analyse the techno-economic viability of 6 isolated microgrids in different locations in the non-interconnected zone of Colombia, considering different climatic conditions, the availability of renewable resources, the current consumption profile, and a modified profile applying demand-side management. Modelling and simulation were performed considering storage systems based on lithium and lead-acid batteries. The resulting simulations provide the optimal system cost, emissions levels, electricity cost and battery lifetime. This study demonstrates that isolated hybrid microgrids with renewable energy are a feasible alternative to solve access to energy problems, reducing the need for dies... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: direct slot cooling, electrical aviation drives, high current density design, lightweight machine design, minimum weight, polysiloxan cooling fluids, surface cooler
Through applying an exemplary design study, the dependencies between current density, temperatures, and weight in an electrical drive system for a small range aircraft with conventional electrical fan or propeller drives are evaluated. This study applies a combined numerical (Finite Element Method FEM) and analytical approach to the machine design, calculation of temperatures, and cooling system design (cooler, pumps, piping). A design scenario was defined using start and climb flight in a warm tropical surrounding as the worst load case. The design has to move between two fixed temperature limits: The maximum allowable temperature in the machine insulation and the ambient temperature. The implemented method facilitates a comparatively fast-medium depth design of the drive system. The derived results show, in fact, a minimum of weight at a certain current density, which is one of the key interests for the designers of the electrical machine. The main influences on this minimum are the... [more]

Using Agent-Based Models to Generate Transformation Knowledge for the German Energiewende—Potentials and Challenges Derived from Four Case Studies
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: agent-based model, energiewende, Energy, feedback products, insulation, power-to-fuels, retail market, transformation knowledge, transition
The German Energiewende is a deliberate transformation of an established industrial economy towards a nearly CO2-free energy system accompanied by a phase out of nuclear energy. Its governance requires knowledge on how to steer the transition from the existing status quo to the target situation (transformation knowledge). The energy system is, however, a complex socio-technical system whose dynamics are influenced by behavioural and institutional aspects, which are badly represented by the dominant techno-economic scenario studies. In this paper, we therefore investigate and identify characteristics of model studies that make agent-based modelling supportive for the generation of transformation knowledge for the Energiewende. This is done by reflecting on the experiences gained from four different applications of agent-based models. In particular, we analyse whether the studies have improved our understanding of policies’ impacts on the energy system, whether the knowledge derived is u... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: damping coefficient, design, EHSA, energy harvesting, methodology, shock absorber
In recent years, there has been a lot of work related to Energy Harvesting Shock Absorbers (EHSA). These devices harvest energy from the movement of the vehicle’s shock absorbers caused by road roughness, braking, acceleration and turning. There are different technologies that can be used in these systems, but it is not clear which would be the best option if you want to replace a conventional shock absorber with an EHSA. This article presents a methodology to compare the performance of different EHSA technologies that can replace a shock absorber with a given damping coefficient. The methodology allows to include different analysis options, including different types of driving cycles, computer vehicle models, input signals and road types. The article tests the methodology in selecting the optimal EHSA technology for a particular shock absorber and vehicle, optimizing at the same time energy recovery. In addition, a study of parameters in each type of technology is included to analyze... [more]

Design and Performance Analysis of a Saturated Iron-Core Superconducting Fault Current Limiter for DC Power Systems
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electromagnetic transient analysis, fault current limit, saturated iron-core superconducting fault current limiter, VSC-DC power system
A saturated iron-core superconducting fault current limiter (SI-SFCL) can significantly limit the magnitude of the fault current and reduce the stress on circuit breakers in direct current (DC) power systems. The SI-SFCL consists of three main parts: one magnetic iron-core, one normal conductive primary coil (CPC), and one superconducting secondary coil (SSC). This paper deals with the design options for the coil system of the SI-SFCL and confirms their operating characteristics through a physical experiment. The electromagnetic characteristics and operational features of the SI-SFCL was analyzed by a 3D finite element method simulation model. The design of the SSC was based on shape, wire types, required fault current limit and protection aspects. In the CPC, the bobbin was designed based on material selection, cost, structural design, and the effects of the SI-SFCL on the fault current limit. Based on these simulation results, a laboratory-scale SI-SFCL was developed, specifically fa... [more]

Biogas Upgrading Approaches with Special Focus on Siloxane Removal—A Review
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: abatement techniques, adsorbents, biogas composition, biogas impurities, siloxane sources, volatile methylsiloxanes
Biogas, a product of anaerobic digestion process that consists mainly of methane and carbon dioxide is a suitable alternative fuel if unwanted impurities are removed as they have a negative impact on the equipment. The most significant technologically troublesome trace compounds that must be removed are siloxanes since they are converted into silica on gas surface engines and turbines resulting in equipment damage. The quality of the gas is certainly improved by reducing the amount of impurities and the end use determines the extent of biogas cleaning needed. The major aim of this study was to compile information that can assist researchers or even designers in selecting a suitable technology to remove siloxanes. Siloxane removal definitely can be achieved using different methods and the effectiveness of each method relies on careful consideration of the characteristics of both biogas and siloxane, as well as the technological aspects of the method. Improving the Quality of Electricity in Installations with Mixed Lighting Fittings
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: energy quality, harmonics components, light sources, power factor
The issues that are presented in the article concern the broadly understood parameters of the operation of lighting fixtures in mixed systems and the improvement of the quality of electricity, considered in two aspects: as receivers of the energy consumed, determining and generating reactive power, influencing the asymmetry of currents and the production of higher harmonics, determined by the parameters of current and supply voltage (independent of the consumers connected at the connection point), which are influenced by the consumers that are connected at the connection point. After the tests, in order to improve the quality of energy, a proprietary program for the design of passive resonance filters was developed. A wide range of measurements of various types of lighting devices was carried out in single, complex, and mixed systems. Luminaires with discharge and LED sources were selected for the analysis of energy parameters. The tests were carried out in accordance with the IEEE 145... [more]

Tailoring the Bore Surfaces of Water Hydraulic Axial Piston Machines to Piston Tilt and Deformation
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: axial piston pump, surface shaping, water hydraulics
A novel virtual prototyping algorithm has been developed to design one of the most critical lubricating interfaces in axial piston machines of the swash plate type—the piston−cylinder interface—for operation with water as the working fluid. Due to its low viscosity, the use of water as a lubricant can cause solid friction and wear in these machines at challenging operating conditions. The prototyping algorithm compensates for this by tailoring the shape of the bore surface that guides the motion of each piston in this type of positive displacement machine to conform with the piston surface, taking into account both the piston’s tilt and its deformation. Shaping these surfaces in this manner can render the interface more conducive to generating hydrodynamic pressure buildup that raises its load-carrying capacity. The present work first outlines the structure of the proposed algorithm, then presents a case study in which it is employed to design a bore surface shape for use with two prot... [more]

An Assessment of Different Integration Strategies of Hydrothermal Carbonisation and Anaerobic Digestion of Water Hyacinth
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biomethane, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, process water, water hyacinth
Water hyacinth (WH) is an invasive aquatic macrophyte that dominates freshwater bodies across the world. However, due to its rapid growth rate and wide-spread global presence, WH could offer great potential as a biomass feedstock, including for bioenergy generation. This study compares different integration strategies of hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) and anaerobic digestion (AD) using WH, across a range of temperatures. These include (i) hydrochar combustion and process water digestion, (ii) hydrochar digestion, (iii) slurry digestion. HTC reactions were conducted at 150 °C, 200 °C, and 250 °C. Separation of hydrochars for combustion and process waters for digestion offers the most energetically-feasible valorisation route. However, hydrochars produced from WH display slagging and fouling tendencies; limiting their use in large-scale combustion. AD of WH slurry produced at 150 °C appears to be energetically-feasible and has the potential to also be a viable integration strategy betw... [more]

Improving the Anaerobic Digestion of Wine-Industry Liquid Wastes: Treatment by Electro-Oxidation and Use of Biochar as an Additive
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biochar, biogas, pre-treatment, wine lees
Wine lees have a great potential to obtain clean energy in the form of biogas through anaerobic digestion due to their high organic load. However, wine lees are a complex substrate and may likely give rise to instabilities leading to failure of the biological process. This work analysed the digestion of wine lees using two different approaches. First, electro-oxidation was applied as pre-treatment using boron-doped diamond-based electrodes. The voltage was 25 V and different treatment times were tested (ranging from 0.08 to 1.5 h) at 25 °C. Anaerobic digestion of wine lees was evaluated in batch tests to investigate the effect of electro-oxidation on biogas yield. Electro-oxidation exhibited a significant positive effect on biogas production increasing its value up to 330 L kg−1 of volatile solids after 1.5 h of treatment, compared to 180 L kg−1 of volatile solids measured from raw wine lees. As a second approach, the addition of biochar to the anaerobic digestion of wine lees was inve... [more]

Quad-Trapezoidal-Leg Orthoplanar Spring with Piezoelectric Plate for Enhancing the Performances of Vibration Energy Harvester
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: orthoplanar spring, piezoelectric harvester, trapezoidal leg, vibration energy
To validate the potentials of unequal-length section-varied geometry in developing a orthoplanar spring-based piezoelectric vibration energy harvester (PVEH), a modified spring with quad-trapezoidal-leg configuration is designed, analyzed, and fabricated. A basic quad-trapezoidal-leg orthoplanar spring (QTOPS) is theoretically analyzed, and the structural effective stress and eigenfrequency are formulated to determine the main dimension parameters. Then, an improved QTOPS with additional intermediations is constructed and simulated. Porotypes with different leg geometries and mass configurations are fabricated and tested. The results of QTOPS and a conventional rectangular-shaped spring are compared. It is verified that the proposed approach provides the structure with an enlarged effective stress and lower resonant frequency, which makes it more suitable to construct a high-performance PVEH than the orthoplanar spring with equal-length or rectangular legs.

Design Trade-Offs and Feasibility Assessment of a Novel One-Body, Laminated-Rotor Flywheel Switched Reluctance Machine
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: customer-side installation, energy storage system, high-speed, integrated flywheel, interference fit, laminated rotor, machine design, one body flywheel, switched reluctance drive
In a bid to respond to the challenges being faced in the installation of flywheel-based electric energy storage systems (EESSs) in customer-side facilities, namely high safety, high energy/power densities and low cost, research work towards the development of a novel, one-body, laminated-rotor flywheel, based on a switched reluctance machine (OBOLAR-Fly SR machine) is presented, where the laminated rotor provides both the energy storage and motor/generator functions. The one-body architecture improves compactness and robustness. Besides, the rotor’s laminated body ensures inherently high safety. From the design perspective, the rotor’s dual purpose causes the traditional electrical machines design aspects, such as power development, cooling, losses, torque ripple, etc., to clash with the typical requirements of a flywheel, namely in-vacuum operation and moment of inertia. This results in six main trade-offs to be addressed during the design process: rotor material, speed ratio, number... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: daylighting, design variables, energy consumption, hot climates, residential building
In Saudi Arabia, residential buildings are one of the major contributors to total energy consumption. Even though there are abundant natural resources, it is somewhat difficult to apply them to building designs, as design variables, due to slow progress and private issues in Saudi Arabia. Thus, the present study demonstrated the development of sustainable residential building design by examining the daylighting and energy performance with design variables. Focusing on the daylighting system, the design variables were chosen, including window-to-wall ratios (WWR), external shading devices, and types of glazing. The illuminance level by these design variables in a building was evaluated by using daylight metrics, such as spatial daylight autonomy and annual sunlight exposure. Moreover, the building energy consumption with these design variables was analyzed by using energy simulation. As a result, the daylighting was improved with the increase in WWRs and the tinted double glazing, while... [more]

Modeling of CO2 Capture with Water Bubble Column Reactor
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bubble column, CCS, CCU, model, one-dimensional
The demand for carbon capture is increasing over time due to rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere. Even though fossil emission could be decreased or even eliminated, there is a need to start removing CO2 from the atmosphere. The removed CO2 could be either stored permanently to a reservoir (CCS, Carbon Capture and Storage) or utilized as a raw material in a long-lasting product (CCU, Carbon Capture and Utilization). The capture of CO2 could be done by direct air capture, or capturing CO2 from biogenic sources. Amine absorption is the state-of-the-art method to capture CO2, but it has some drawbacks: toxicity, high heat demand, and sorbent sensitivity towards impurities such as sulfur compounds and degradation in cyclic operation. Another potential solvent for CO2 could be water, which is easily available and safe to use in many applications. The problem with water is the poorer solubility of CO2, compared with amines, which leads to larger required flow rates. This study analyzed the te... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: ETAP, fault current analysis, microgrid, protection system, PSCAD/EMTDC
Steady-state, harmonics, and transient analysis of a power system by using a detailed simulation model is essential to microgrid operation before the installation of new power facilities, because the microgrid, which is a small-scale independent power grid consisting of distributed resources and an energy storage system, has no choice but to include many inverters consisting of switching devices. Accordingly, in the case of an accident in a microgrid system, various power system simulation tools must be used to calculate the fault current for grid protection components. Specifically, Modelling using Power System Computer Aided Design (PSCAD)/Electro-Magnetic Transient Design and Control (EMTDC) can perform detailed modeling of switching devices into each inverter, and Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP) can design protection relays. Keywords: client-aware negotiation, data security transmission, energy saving, SSL/TLS protocol, two-way authentication
In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), server clusters, and other systems requiring secure transmission, the overhead of data encryption and transmission is often not negligible. Unfortunately, a conflict exists between security and efficiency in processing data. Therefore, this paper proposes a strategy to overcome this conflict, called Client-Aware Negotiation for Secure and Efficient Data Transmission (CAN-SEAT). This strategy allows a client with different security transmission requirements to use the appropriate data security transmission without modifying the client. Two methods are designed for different clients. The first method is based on two-way authentication and renegotiation. After handshakes, the appropriate data security transmission scheme is selected according to the client requirements. Another method is based on redirection, which can be applied when the client does not support two-way authentication or renegotiation. For the characteristics of different architecture,... [more]
