Techno-Economic Analysis of Solar Photovoltaic System for Fishery Cold Storage Based on Ownership Models and Regulatory Boundaries in Indonesia
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: fishery, LCOE, ownership model, photovoltaic, regulation barrier, sold storage
With Indonesia’s marine resources abundance, it is appropriate for Indonesia’s economic growth to gear towards the fisheries sector. Fishery management in Indonesia is still not operating optimally due to a lack of fisheries management infrastructure. This study took place at the Fish Auction Place in Dadap Village, West Java, Indonesia. The actual problem is a fluctuation in fish catch due to seasonal factors that cause instability in fish prices and fishermen’s incomes. Furthermore, there is no cold storage for storing fish when the fish are abundant so that the quality of the fish will decrease. However, fishery cold storage is energy-intensive equipment, and there is a lack of electricity infrastructure in that coastal area. Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are the key for rural electricity because RES prices are lower, especially on-grid solar photovoltaic (PV), than fossil fuel-based. Consequently, the application of solar PV in Indonesia is still not optimal due to limited regulat... [more]

Design and Validation of a Reduced Switching Components Step-Up Multilevel Inverter (RSCS-MLI)
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: multilevel inverter, NLC, RSCS-MLI, total harmonic distortion
A reduced switching components step-up multilevel inverter (RSCS-MLI) is presented in the paper. The basic circuit of the proposed MLI can produce 11 levels in the output voltage with a reduced number of switching components. The other features of the proposed circuit include a low value of voltage stresses and the inherent generation of the voltage levels pertaining to the negative half without the requirement of an H-bridge. Fundamental frequency switching technique, also known as Nearest Level Control (NLC) technique, is implemented in the proposed topology for generating the switching signals. The experimental total harmonic distortion (THD) in the output voltage comes out to be 9.4% for modulation index equal to 1. Based on different parameters, a comparative study has been shown in the paper, which makes the claim of the proposed MLI stronger. An experimental setup is prepared to carry out the hardware implementation of the proposed structure and monitor its performance under dyn... [more]

Fast and Efficient Removal of Uranium onto a Magnetic Hydroxyapatite Composite: Mechanism and Process Evaluation
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Adsorption, cobalt ferrite, hydroxyapatite, mineralization, uranium(VI)
The exploration and rational design of easily separable and highly efficient sorbents with satisfactory capability of extracting radioactive uranium (U)-containing compound(s) are of paramount significance. In this study, a novel magnetic hydroxyapatite (HAP) composite (HAP@ CoFe2O4), which was coupled with cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4), was rationally designed for uranium(VI) removal through a facile hydrothermal process. The U(VI) ions were rapidly removed using HAP@ CoFe2O4 within a short time (i.e., 10 min), and a maximum U(VI) removal efficiency of 93.7% was achieved. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) of the HAP@CoFe2O4 was 338 mg/g, which demonstrated the potential of as-prepared HAP@CoFe2O4 in the purification of U(VI) ions from nuclear effluents. Autunite [Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2(H2O)6] was the main crystalline phase to retain uranium, wherein U(VI) was effectively extracted and immobilized in terms of a relatively stable mineral. Furthermore, the reacted HAP@CoFe2O4 can be magnetically... [more]

Convective Heat Transfer Motivated by Liquid-to-Vapor Density Difference in Centrifugal Force Field of Axially Rotating Loop Thermosyphons
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: passive heat transfer, rotating looped thermosyphon, rotating machinery cooling
The innovative rotating looped thermosyphons (RLTs) with and without a coil insert were proposed with cooling applications in rotating machinery. The spatial gradients of body forces among the vapor−liquid mixture of the distilled water in a strong centrifugal acceleration field motivated the flow circulation in a RLT to facilitate the latent heat transmissions. The effective thermal conductivity (Keff), the thermal resistance (Rth), the Nusselt numbers in the condenser (Nucon) and evaporator (Nueva), and the Nusselt number of the airflow induced by the rotating bend of the condenser (Nuext) of each RLT were measured at various rotating speeds and heat powers with two filling ratios of 0.5 and 0.8. The increase of filling ratio from 0.5 to 0.8 to maintain a thin liquid film along the rotating inner leg of each RLT substantially improved the heat transfer performances. The Keff, Nucon, Nueva, and Nuext were increased with rotating speed, leading to the corresponding reduction of Rth. On... [more]

Optimal Design of Accumulator Parameters for an Electro-Hydrostatic Actuator at Low Speed
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: accumulator, cogging torque, electro-hydrostatic actuator (EHA), flux harmonics, pressure pulsation
The electro-hydrostatic actuator (EHA) is a type of highly integrated, compact, closed pump control drive system composed of a servo motor, a metering pump, a hydraulic cylinder and other components. Compared with the traditional valve control system, the electro-hydrostatic actuator has the advantages of a high power-to-weight ratio, high integration, environmental friendliness, and superior efficiency and energy saving. However, due to the complex mechanical−hydraulic coupling mechanism of the system and the existence of non-linear multi-source disturbances, the dynamic and static performance of the system is limited, particularly the pressure pulsation phenomenon under low-speed conditions, which seriously affects the high precision control requirements of the system. In order to address the low-speed pressure pulsation problem of the electro-hydrostatic actuator, first, the mathematical models of the servo motor, metering pump and hydraulic cylinder are established, and the simulat... A Study on a Slotless Brushless DC Motor with Toroidal Winding
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: back electromotive force (EMF), BLDC six-step drive, brushless dc motor (BLDC), cogging torque, lumped-parameter magnetic circuit, slotless motor, toroidal winding, winding factor
In this study we developed a brushless DC (BLDC) slotless motor with toroidal winding. The proposed toroidal winding is a method of winding a coil around a ring-type stator yoke in the circumferential direction. As there is no need for a slot or tooth structure, it can be designed with a slotless motor structure that is advantageous for vibration and noise. The basic principle of operation and motor characteristics of a slotless motor with toroidal winding were explained using an analytical method and finite element analysis (FEA). Further, the air gap flux density, winding factor, and back electromotive force (EMF) for changes in the winding angle and number of coil turns were calculated using the analytical method and compared with the FEA results. Finally, the resistance, back EMF, cogging torque, and performance of the prototype were measured and compared with the FEA results. The results show that the air gap flux density and winding factor were approximately the same with an erro... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anomeric protons, central composite design, dairy industry, waste valorization, whey fermentation
In some fermentation systems, whey components (lactose, proteins and minerals) can produce isopentyl acetate (IA). An analysis of the best conditions for IA production with Kluyveromyces marxianus was developed in this work. The experiment design was two-factor and three-level design based on a response surface methodology (RSM) using Design-Expert® software. The analysis of anomeric protons by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) showed 81.25% of β lactose content. This characteristic favored the production of IA. The maximum output (Mp) of IA, determined by gas chromatography, was 9.52 g/L (p < 0.05). The central composite design (CCD) was used to perform the factor analysis. Results showed that concentrations of 0.03 (g/L) ammonium sulphate and 0.3 (v/v) of isoamyl alcohol are the best conditions for a maximum rate of IA production. The production of IA can reduce the discharge of whey, allowing its reuse and revaluation.

Design of a Bench-Scale Tubular Reactor Similar to Plug Flow Reactor for Gas-Phase Kinetic Data Generation-Illustration with the Pyrolysis of Octanoic Acid
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bench-scale setup, design, kinetic data, octanoic acid, pyrolysis
The material described in this article deals with waste conversion into energy vectors by pyrolysis, steam cracking, or oxidation of liquid biomass, carried out at small to medium scale. The design of a bench-scale experimental setup devoted to gas phase kinetic data generation in a tubular reactor under laminar regime close to plug flow is detailed based on a very simple approach. Validation of the designed bench-scale setup was successfully carried out within the context of octanoic acid pyrolysis by generating kinetic data with satisfactory measurement repeatability and material balances. The key to this positive result is that axial dispersion coefficient is much smaller in gas-phase than in liquid-phase, thus allowing the designed small sized tubular reactor to be close to the plug flow reactor. Such a feature of the axial dispersion coefficient is not well known by the wider public. Besides, octanoic acid was selected as surrogate for carboxylic acids because of their key role in... [more]

Pressure Fluctuation Characteristics of High-Speed Centrifugal Pump with Enlarged Flow Design
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: enlarged flow design, high-speed centrifugal pump, pressure fluctuations, vortex
The pressure fluctuations of high-speed centrifugal pumps are the hotspot in pump research. Pressure fluctuations is differ for different structural designs and flow structures. High-speed centrifugal pumps are usually designed to increase efficiency with an enlarged flow design at a low specific speed, which changes the structure of the pump. In order to analyze the pressure fluctuations of a high-speed centrifugal pump with an enlarged flow design, the pressure was measured, and the flow field of the pump was simulated with different flow rates. Through analysis, we found that pressure fluctuations varied periodically and was consistent with the blade frequency. The pressure fluctuations at the guide vane and the interference region were also closely related to the vortices at the impeller outlet, which changed differently at different flow rates. The results showed that the high-speed centrifugal pump with an enlarged design had better performance at a large flow rate. The results i... [more]

The Strategy of Universal-Design Thinking in Architecturally Innovative Product Development
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: architecturally innovative, design factors, universal design
Universal design, as an important concept in product development, has been gradually implemented in various industries and firms, but most of the applications are aimed at the incremental innovation of product design. However, considering the differentiation of product types, the design factors are varied and not precise, which makes it difficult to effectively implement the existing universal-design principles in specific product designs when facing architecturally innovative product development, which leads to an increasing amount of time and resources. This study, with an umbrella stand as an example, proposes to design a new universal-design scale by combining the attributes of the umbrella stand, the existing universal-design principles and the usability principles at the beginning of the design. Then, through interviews and user surveys, cluster analysis is used to screen the products and refine the design factors. In addition, with the Quantification Type I, the universal-design... [more]

Experimental Investigation on Turbulent Flow Deviation in a Gas-Particle Corner-Injected Flow
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: corner-injected flow, gas-particle interactions, PIV technique, turbulent flow deviation
An experimental model of a corner-injected flow is built to investigate the turbulent flow behavior by employing the PIV technique. The influences of the ideal tangential circle, the additive particles and the initial gas mass flux on the corner-injected flow are analyzed systematically. To be specific, the flow deviation, the velocity profile, the vortex evolution and the turbulent flow development are discussed quantitatively. The influences of the increasing ideal tangential circle on the turbulent jet deviation are shortened gradually, and the impinging circles are obviously narrowed with the injection of particles. The gas-particle corner-injected flow can obtain a good rotation when the ideal tangential circle is 0.25 times the width of the impinging chamber. The momentum decay of the corner-injected flow diminishes with the increasing ideal tangential circle and the decreasing initial gas velocity. The rotation strength of the vortex is more affected by the injection of laden pa... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: continuous crystallization, continuous manufacturing, continuous particle isolation, filtration, particle design, particle size distribution, pharmaceutical manufacturing, washing
Integrated continuous manufacturing processes of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) provide key benefits concerning product quality control, scale-up capability, and a reduced time-to-market. Thereby, the crystallization step, which is used in approximately 90% of API productions, mainly defines the final API properties. This study focuses on the design and operation of an integrated small-scale process combining a continuous slug flow crystallizer (SFC) with continuous particle isolation using the modular continuous vacuum screw filter (CVSF). By selective adjustment of supersaturation and undersaturation, the otherwise usual blocking could be successfully avoided in both apparatuses. It was shown that, during crystallization in an SFC, a significant crystal growth of particles (Δd50,3≈ 220 µm) is achieved, and that, during product isolation in the CVSF, the overall particle size distribution (PSD) is maintained. Novel Module-Based Design Algorithm for Intensified Membrane Reactor Systems
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: membrane reactors, module-based design, Process Intensification
The growing interest in intensified process units that improve efficiency by combining several phenomena into one unit, has led to a loss in degrees of freedom when addressing the control scheme of these units. Previous work demonstrated that a novel module-based design approach to membrane reactors could improve the operability index of membrane reactor systems. This approach sought to decouple the phenomena to regain some degrees of freedom for the control system. However, the computational time to determine such an optimal module design made this class of design problems intractable to solve in a reasonable amount of time. This work proposes a set of design heuristics for a new module-based design approach for membrane reactors. These heuristics are used in combination with a genetic algorithm formulation to produce a novel, two-staged algorithm for the design and control of membrane reactor systems. This algorithm is developed in Python and uses rigorous membrane reactor models bui... [more]

An Analytic Solution for an Expanding/Contracting Strain-Hardening Viscoplastic Hollow Cylinder at Large Strains and Its Application to Tube Hydroforming Design
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: hollow cylinder, large strains, rate hardening, semi-analytic solution, strain hardening, tube hydroforming
This paper presents a semi-analytic rigid/plastic solution for the expansion/contraction of a hollow cylinder at large strains. The constitutive equations comprise the yield criterion and its associated flow rule. The yield criterion is pressure-independent. The yield stress depends on the equivalent strain rate and the equivalent strain. No restriction is imposed on this dependence. The solution is facilitated using the equivalent strain rate as an independent variable instead of the polar radius. As a result, it reduces to ordinary integrals. In the course of deriving the solution above, the transformation between Eulerian and Lagrangian coordinates is used. A numerical example illustrates the solution for a material model available in the literature. A practical aspect of the solution is that it readily applies to the preliminary design of tube hydroforming processes.

Computer-Aided Framework for the Design of Optimal Bio-Oil/Solvent Blend with Economic Considerations
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: CAMD, cost optimisation, fuzzy multi-objective optimisation, pyrolysis bio-oil, solvent design
A major obstacle in utilising pyrolysis bio-oil as biofuel is its relatively low heating value, high viscosity, and non-homogeneity. Solvent addition is a simple yet practical approach in upgrading pyrolysis bio-oil. However, most solvents are often manufactured as specialty chemicals, and thus, this leads to a high production cost of solvents. It is crucial for the designed solvent-oil blend to achieve both fuel functionality and economic targets to be competitive with the conventional diesel fuel. Hence, the objective of this work is to generate feasible solvent candidates by solving this multi-objective optimisation (MOO) problem via a computer-aided molecular design (CAMD) approach. Initially, an optimisation model was developed to identify potential solvents that satisfied the predefined targeted properties. Next, a MOO model was developed via a fuzzy optimisation approach to identify the trade-off between profitability and heating value of the solvent-oil blend. A pricing model w... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: mathematical model, multi-period, penalty, superstructure, water supply network
A water supply network is an essential part of industrial and urban water systems. The water intake in a conventional water supply network varies periodically over time, depending on the amount of available water resources and the demand at water sinks or water-using units. This paper establishes a super-structural mathematical model for the optimal design and operation of a multi-period water supply network with multiple water sources. It considers the flow rate fluctuation of raw water availability and the demand of water sinks during different periods. The influence of multi-period demand variation on technology and the capacity selection of desalination water stations is examined, which affects the overall cost of the water supply network. The operating cost penalty factor is introduced, which quantitatively clarifies how the network operating status influences the operating costs. A General Transformer Evaluation Method for Common-Mode Noise Behavior
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: CM noise, EMI, evaluation method, interwinding capacitance, transformer
In isolated power converters, the transformer is a key part of voltage transformation and isolation. Since common-mode (CM) noise is rather difficult to suppress compared with different-mode (DM) noise, more and more scholars are paying attention to the characteristics of CM noise, especially in high-frequency CM noise behaviors. CM noise can be further divided into conducted CM noise and radiated CM noise, and the main focus of this paper is on conducted CM noise. The CM coupling capacitance of the transformer is one of the main contributors of CM noise, which has been verified in many previous studies. Hence, eliminating the CM noise in a transformer coupling path can significantly lower the whole CM noise level of the converter. Professional conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) testing instruments are quite expensive. In this paper, a general transformer evaluation technique for CM noise behavior is proposed.
