Adam Karaba, Jan Patera, Petra Dvorakova Ruskayova, Héctor de Paz Carmona, Petr Zamostny
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: green chemicals, hydrotreated vegetable oil, laboratory pyrolysis, olefins production, steam-cracking
Hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVOs) are currently a popular renewable energy source, frequently blended into a Diesel-fuel. In the paper, HVO potential as feedstock for the steam-cracking process was investigated, since HVOs promise high yields of monomers for producing green polymers and other chemicals. Prepared HVO samples of different oil sources were studied experimentally, using pyrolysis gas chromatography to estimate their product yields in the steam-cracking process and compare them to traditional feedstocks. At 800 °C, HVOs provided significantly elevated ethylene yield, higher yield of propylene and C4 olefins, and lower oil yield than both atmospheric gas oil and hydrocracked vacuum distillate used as reference traditional feedstocks. The HVO preparation process was found to influence the distribution of steam-cracking products more than the vegetable oil used for the HVO preparation. Furthermore, pyrolysis of HVO/traditional feedstock blends was performed at different blend... [more]

Keywords: continuous manufacturing, design of experiments, economic assessment, first-order system, granule size distribution, kernel PCA, pharmaceutical tablet, regulations, torque
Toward further implementation of continuous tablet manufacturing, one key issue is the time needed for start-up operation because it could lead to lower product yield and reduced economic performance. The behavior of the start-up operation is not well understood; moreover, the definition of the start-up time is still unclear. This work investigates the effects of process parameters on the start-up operation in continuous wet granulation, which is a critical unit operation in solid drug manufacturing. The profiles of torque and granule size distribution were monitored and measured for the first hour of operation, including the start-up phase. We analyzed the impact of process parameters based on design of experiments and performed an economic assessment to see the effects of the start-up operation. The torque profiles indicated that liquid-to-solid ratio and screw speed would affect the start-up operation, whereas different start-up behavior resulted in different granule size. Depending... Keywords: electrocoagulation, hybrid systems, pharmaceuticals removal, reactor design
The electrocoagulation (EC) process has been widely studied in recent years to remove a wide range of contaminants present in different types of water: fluorides, arsenic, heavy metals, organic matter, colorants, oils, and recently, pharmaceutical compounds. However, most of the studies have been aimed at understanding the process factors that have the most significant effect on efficiency, and these studies have been mainly on a batch process. Therefore, this review is focused on elucidating the current state of development of this process and the challenges it involves transferring to continuous processes and the recent exploration of its potential use in the removal of pharmaceutical contaminants and its implementation with other technologies.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: industrial motors, ON-OFF method, smoothing, synchronous reluctance motor, topology algorithm
The topology algorithm (TA) can effectively find an optimal solution by changing the material and shape of the design target without the limitation of design variables. In this paper, a genetic topology algorithm (GTA) is proposed for the design optimization of a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM). By applying the stochastic algorithm (genetic algorithm (GA)) and the deterministic algorithm (ON-OFF method) to the design, the optimal shape can be found quickly and effectively. The GTA, which improves manufacturability by removing the aliasing that occurs in TA, was applied to the design of SynRM to search for the optimal model. After dividing the rotor into a reverse mesh grid, the optimal topology was searched for by GA and ON-OFF methods. Then, mechanical stability was verified through stress analysis, and additional performance improvement was obtained through the skew technique. The final design, which satisfies the minimum efficiency, required torque, and torque ripple was derive... [more]

Lili Liu, Chenxing Yuan, Wei Li, Beibei Li, Xiumei Liu
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: burst pressure, forming pressure, process safety equipment, rupture disc, thickness thinning ratio
Rupture discs, also called bursting discs, are widely used in pressure vessels, pressure equipment, and pressure piping in process industries, such as nuclear power, fire protection, and petrochemical industries. To explore the relationship between the burst pressure of reverse-acting rupture discs and their production, two common manufacturing methods, air pressure moulding and hydraulic moulding, were compared in this study. Reverse-acting rupture discs that complied with the form recommended by API 520-2014 were prepared with four release diameters, and burst pressure tests were carried out. These results showed an obvious negative correlation between the forming pressure of rupture discs and their actual burst pressure for all experimental samples. Further study showed that the main reason for this correlation was a reduction in thickness at the top of the rupture disc caused by large plastic deformation during compression moulding. To explore the relationship between the thickness... [more]

Keywords: corn, hammermill, moisture content, particle size
This study was performed to evaluate hammermill tip speed, assistive airflow, and screen hole diameter on hammermill throughput and characteristics of ground corn. Corn was ground using two Andritz hammermills measuring 1 m in diameter each equipped with 72 hammers and 300 HP motors. Treatments were arranged in a 3 × 3 × 3 factorial design with three tip speeds (3774, 4975, and 6176 m/min), three screen hole diameters (2.3, 3.9, and 6.3 mm), and three air flow rates (1062, 1416, and 1770 fan revolutions per minute). Corn was ground on three separate days to create three replications and treatments were randomized within day. Samples were collected and analyzed for moisture, particle size, and flowability characteristics. There was a 3-way interaction (p = 0.029) for standard deviation (Sgw). There was a screen hole diameter × hammer tip speed interaction (p < 0.001) for geometric mean particle size dgw (p < 0.001) and composite flow index (CFI) (p < 0.001). When tip speed incr... [more]

Keywords: air diffusers, airlift reactor, bubble column reactor, gas–liquid hydrodynamics, KLa coefficient, plastic media
Even bubble column reactors (BCR) and airlift reactors (ALR) have been developed in terms of various related aspects towards mass transfer enhancement, the effective analysis of gas diffuser types on mass transfer and gas−liquid hydrodynamic characteristics is still limited. Therefore, the present study aims to analyze the relative effect of different types of air diffusers on bubble hydrodynamics and mass transfer performance to understand their behaviors and define the best type. The experiments were conducted by varying different diffuser types, reactor types (BCR and ALR), and superficial gas velocity (Vg) (0.12 to 1.00 cm/s). Five air diffusers including commercial fine sand (F-sand) and coarse sand (C-sand) diffusers, and acrylic perforated diffusers with orifice sizes of 0.3 mm (H-0.3), 0.6 mm (H-0.6), and 1.2 mm (H-1.2), were used in this study. For every condition, it was analyzed in terms of bubble hydrodynamics and oxygen mass transfer coefficient (KLa). Lastly, the selected... [more]

Katerina Marzova, Ivo Bukovsky
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Boruta Feature Selection Algorithm, Multiscale False Neighbours Analysis, oxy-fuel combustion
This paper presents a novel feature extraction and validation technique for data-driven prediction of oxy-fuel combustion emissions in a bubbling fluidized bed experimental facility. The experimental data were analyzed and preprocessed to minimize the size of the data set while preserving patterns and variance and to find an optimal configuration of the feature vector. The Boruta Feature Selection Algorithm (BFSA) finds feature vector’s configuration and the Multiscale False Neighbours Analysis (MSFNA) is newly extended and proposed to validate the BFSA’s design for emission prediction to assure minimal uncertainty in mapping between feature vectors and corresponding outputs. The finding is that the standalone BFSA does not reflect various sampling period setups that appeared significantly influencing the false neighborhood in the design of feature vectors for possible emission prediction, and MSFNA resolves that.

Optimizing the operating factors in edible oil extraction requires a statistical technique such as a response surface methodology for evaluating their effects on the responses. The examined input factors in this study were the diameter of pressing vessel, VD (60, 80, and 100 mm), temperature, TPR (40, 60, and 80 °C), and heating time, HTM (30, 60 and 90 min). The combination of these factors generated 17 experimental runs where the mass of oil, oil yield, oil extraction efficiency, and deformation energy were calculated. Based on the response surface regression analysis, the combination of the optimized factors was VD: 100 (+1) mm; TPR: 80 °C (+1) and HTM: 60 (0) min); VD: 60 (−1) mm; TPR: 80 °C (+1) and HTM: 75 (+0.5) min and VD: 100 (+1) mm; TPR: 80 °C (+1) and HTM: 90 (+1). The absorbance and transmittance values significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with the wavelength and temperature, but they did not correlate significantly (p > 0.05) with heating time. The peroxide value did not c... [more]

Keywords: biosensor, detection, fluorescence, mercury, silver nanoclusters
Atomically precise silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) are small nanostructures consisting of only a few atoms of silver. The combination of AgNCs with cytosine-rich single-stranded oligonucleotides results in DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (DNA-AgNCs). DNA-AgNCs are highly luminescent and can be engineered with reproducible and unique fluorescent properties. Furthermore, using nucleic acids as templates for the synthesis of AgNCs provides additional practical benefits by expanding optical activity beyond the visible spectral range and creating the possibility for color tunability. In this study, we explore DNA oligonucleotides designed to fold into hairpin-loop (HL) structures which modulate optical properties of AgNCs based on the size of the loop containing different number of cytosines (HL-CN). Depending on the size of the loop, AgNCs can be manufactured to have either single or multiple emissive states. Such hairpin-loop structures provide an additional stability for AgNCs and further... Keywords: fluorine chemical industry, HAZOP, PFD, process safety management (PSM), reduction factor
Traditional hazard and operability analysis (HAZOP) is one of the most widely applied methods for process safety management in process enterprises. Due to its principles based on the conservative and qualitative judgment, it often leads to too conservative risk identification results for the fluorine chemical industry usually with high-risk processes to keep the continuity of production. Most of improved quantitative and semi-quantitative methods are based on the layer of protection analysis (LOPA) to resolve the over-conservative problem of traditional HAZOP with the database of LOPA. However, the improved model, taking LOPA as the main line and HAZOP only as the provider of scenarios and influencing factors, is limited to the fact that LOPA can only analyze complete and independent protection layers (IPLs). Therefore, in order to realize the quantitative or semi-quantitative analysis of disaster causes and consequences, a new semi-quantitative HAZOP method takes HAZOP as the main lin... [more]

Keywords: gradient structure information, remote sensing image, smooth stitching, texture seam
Traditional smooth stitching method for the texture seams of remote sensing images is affected by gradient structure information, leading to poor stitching effect. Therefore, a smooth stitching method for the texture seams of remote sensing images based on gradient structure information is proposed in this research. By matching the feature points of remote sensing images and introducing a block link constraint and shape distortion constraint, the modified stitching image is obtained. By using remote sensing image fusion, the smooth stitching image of texture seams is obtained, and the local overlapping area of the texture is optimized. The main direction of texture seams is determined by calculating the gradient structure information of texture seams in horizontal and vertical directions. By selecting the initial point, the optimal stitching line is extracted by using the minimum mean value of the cumulative error of the smooth stitching line. By using the method of boundary correlatio... [more]

Keywords: filter beds, pathogen removal, point-of-use technologies, safe drinking water, zero-valent iron
The ambitious United Nations Sustainable Development Goal for 2030 to “leave no one behind” concerning safe drinking water calls for the development of universally applicable and affordable decentralized treatment systems to provide safe drinking water. Published results suggest that well-designed biological sand filters (BSFs) amended with metallic iron (Fe0-BSFs) have the potential to achieve this goal. Fe0-BSFs quantitatively remove pathogens and a myriad of chemical pollutants. The available data were achieved under various operating conditions. A comparison of independent research results is almost impossible, especially because the used Fe0 materials are not characterized for their intrinsic reactivity. This communication summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge on designing Fe0-BSFs for households and small communities. The results show that significant research progress has been made on Fe0-BSFs. However, well-designed laboratory and field experiments are required to improve t... [more]

Keywords: frictional pressure drop, gas-liquid two-phase flow, liquid physical properties, microchannel
The flow characteristics in a ring-shaped microchannel with an inner diameter of 1 mm were studied in two-phase flow systems with air-water, air-glycerol aqueous solution and air-ethanol aqueous solution using the differential pressure method. The effects of liquid properties (surface tension and viscosity) and gas/liquid superficial velocity on frictional pressure drop were discussed. The experimental results show that the frictional pressure gradient increases with the increase of superficial gas velocity, superficial liquid velocity and liquid viscosity, and increases with the decrease of liquid surface tension, which has a good agreement with the literature values. The friction pressure drop data are compared with the classical models and correlations in literature, and a reliable correlation is proposed for prediction of two-phase friction coefficient in microchannels.

Keywords: 4-chlorophenol, acclimated sludge, batch experiments, biodegradation, kinetic study, packed bed reactor
In this study, batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the degradation of 4-CP using acclimated sludge. The Monod and Haldane models were employed to fit the specific growth rate with various initial 4-CP concentrations of 67−412 mg/L in the batch experiments. Haldane kinetics showed a better fit to experimental results than Monod kinetics. The kinetic parameters were obtained from a comparison of Monod and Haldane kinetics with batch experimental data. The values of μm and KS were found to be 0.691 d−1 and 5.62 mg/L, respectively, for Monod kinetics. In contrast, the values of μm, KS, and KI were 1.30 d−1, 8.38 mg/L, and 279.4 mg/L, respectively, for Haldane kinetics. The kinetic parameters in Haldane kinetics were used as input parameters for the kinetic model system of the packed bed reactor (PBR). The continuous flow PBR was conducted to validate the kinetic model system. The model-simulated results agreed well with experimental data in the PBR performance operation. At the st... [more]

Keywords: countercurrent, moving bed, pressure drop, solid flow rate, two solid outlets
The calculation equations of pressure drop and solid flow rate are given in an intermittent countercurrent moving bed with multiple optimized structures. The flow fields are investigated by experimental methods under different conditions, e.g., ratio of position of the gas distributor to the bed width (rp = 0.5~1.5), gas superficial velocity (ug = 0~0.1591 m/s), solid outlet diameter (Do = 5~25 mm) and cone angle (α = 0~60°). It is found that when rp ≥ 1.0, the flow field in the bed is little affected by rp. Flow patterns are divided into three modes: continuous discharging, intermittent discharging (synchronous, asynchronous) and particle bridging. During continuous discharging, the calculation formula of the solid flow rate, which is closely related to Do and gas−solid slip velocity vslip, is established by referring to the modified De Jong and Beverloo formulas, and its error ≤ ±12.5%. The pressure drop of the total bed consists of the pressure drops of the granular bed and the soli... [more]

The lack of calcium and magnesium in drinking water affects people’s health, especially cardiovascular and oncologic diseases, and causes corrosion problems. The aim of this paper is to present the methodology of the design, scale-up, and construction of a fluidized bed reactor (FBR) system for drinking water recarbonization with biogenic elements in real conditions. Half-calcined dolomite (HCD) in combination with CO2 was identified as a suitable source of Mg2+ and Ca2+. The experimental results confirmed that an FBR reactor with a water tank is an efficient system for Mg and Ca2+ ion concentrate production. The main process parameters and dimensions of the equipment were determined based on the experimental data and the data obtained showed that the system can be used in real conditions to produce Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions concentrate, which is mixed with soft water in required proportions. The FBR with an internal diameter of 0.16 m and a total height of 3.7 m was designed. The proposed me... [more]

Cloud point extraction is a versatile method aimed at separating compounds from complex mixtures and arouses great technological interest, particularly among the biochemical industries. However, one must have deep knowledge of the liquid−liquid equilibrium behavior of systems to properly use the method. Thus, we used thermodynamic parameters to evaluate the effect of citrate, sulfate, and tartrate anions on the phase separation of water + Triton X-114® mixtures at 283.2 K, 293.2 K, and 303.2 K. In these systems, increasing the temperature and the anion molar fraction expanded the biphasic region in the following order: C6H5O73-> SO42- >  C4H4O62−. Unlike other studies based on the Hofmeister series, the Gibbs free energy of micellization correlated the anion effect on the biphasic region with the spontaneity of the micelle formation. The water molecules structured around these anions were evaluated according to the shell volume of the immobilized water by electrostriction, volume... [more]

Lignocellulose-rich empty fruit bunches (EFBs) have high potential as feedstock for second-generation biofuel and biochemical production without compromising food security. Nevertheless, the major challenge of valorizing lignocellulose-rich EFB is its high pretreatment cost. In this study, the preliminary techno-economic feasibility of expanding an existing pellet production plant into an integrated bio-refinery plant to produce xylitol and bioethanol was investigated as a strategy to diversify the high production cost and leverage the high selling price of biofuel and biochemicals. The EFB feedstock was split into a pellet production stream and a xylitol and bioethanol production stream. Different economic performance metrics were used to compare the profitability at different splitting ratios of xylitol and bioethanol to pellet production. The analysis showed that an EFB splitting ratio below 40% for pellet production was economically feasible. A sensitivity analysis showed that xyli... [more]

A new extraction system containing a mixture of Cyanex 272 and caprylic acid is proposed for the extraction and separation of lanthanides(III). It was shown that this system possesses a high level of extraction ability and capacity. The extraction of lanthanides(III) from chloride-acetate and nitrate-acetate media was investigated on an example of La(III). The composition of the extracted species was confirmed, based on the analysis of lanthanum(III) extraction isotherms. In the case of acetic-acetate aqueous solutions, a decrease in lanthanum(III) extraction efficiency was observed, due to the decreasing equilibrium pH of the aqueous phase in accordance with the cation-exchange mechanism. The composition of the synergistic mixture of Cyanex 272-caprylic acid established demonstrates highly efficient separation of rare-earth metal ions.

Keywords: chaos synchronization, extrinsic perturbation, polynomial fuzzy compensator, sum of squares
This paper presents the sum of squares (SOS)-based fuzzy control with H∞ performance for a synchronized chaos system and secure communications. To diminish the influence of the extrinsic perturbation, SOS-based stability criteria of the polynomial fuzzy system are derived by using the polynomial Lyapunov function. The perturbation decreasing achievement is indexed in a H∞ criterion. The submitted SOS-based stability criteria are more relaxed than the existing linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based stability criteria. The cryptography scheme based on an n-shift cipher is combined with synchronization for secure communications. Finally, numerical simulations illustrate the perturbation decay accomplishment of the submitted polynomial fuzzy compensator.

Biodesulfurization (BDS) is considered a complementary technology to the traditional hydrodesulfurization treatment for the removal of recalcitrant sulfur compounds from petroleum products. BDS was investigated in a bubble column bioreactor using two-phase media. The effects of various process parameters, such as biocatalyst age and concentration, organic fraction percentage (OFP), and type of sulfur compound—namely, dibenzothiophene (DBT), 4-methyldibenzothiophene (4-MDBT), 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT), and 4,6-diethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DEDBT)—were evaluated, using resting cells of Rhodococcus erythropolis IGTS8. Cells derived from the beginning of the exponential growth phase of the bacterium exhibited the highest biodesulfurization efficiency and rate. The biocatalyst performed better in an OFP of 50% v/v. The extent of DBT desulfurization was dependent on cell concentration, with the desulfurization rate reaching its maximum at intermediate cell concentrations. A new... [more]

Keywords: hydrofluoric acid, leakages, pipe flange connections, stress analysis of pipeline
Leakages of bolted pipe flange connections of water-containing hydrofluoric acid pipelines were frequently reported by the extraction section in the fluorine chemical industry. Water-containing hydrofluoric acid can cause severe injuries to human beings due to its strong causticity. The water-containing hydrofluoric acid pipe was a short lined pipe, so a lot of flange connections and supports were adopted in the pipeline. In this paper, the finite element models of the pipeline were established to analyze the internal force of the pipeline under conditions including internal pressure, temperature, self-weight, and so on. Based on this, the equivalent design pressure of the flange connections was determined. The results of the stress analyses of the pipeline showed that leakages were mainly caused by a large bending moment, due to the unreasonable layout of the piping supports under self-weight. When the pipeline was supported on the beam of the pipe gallery, which is not necessarily be... [more]
