Flow Frictional Characteristics of Air−Water Flow Characteristics under Stable and Transverse Vibration Conditions in Horizontal Channels
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: air–water, flow characteristics, horizontal channel, pressure drop, transverse vibration condition
We experimentally studied the air−water pressure drop characteristics with inner diameters of 20 mm under stable and transverse vibration conditions in the horizontal circular channel. We experimented with the status of the gas-phase conversion flow velocity Jg at 0.1−20 m/s, and the liquid-phase conversion flow velocity Jw at 0.1−3.0 m/s. In this paper, we discuss the effect of flow velocity, amplitude, and frequency on the transverse vibration pressure drops. With increasing frequency and amplitude, the vibration performance of pressure drops become more intense. Thus, with increasing frequency and amplitude, the frictional pressure drop increases. Moreover, the frictional pressure drop increases linearly with the increasing flow velocity. We compared the experimental results of air−water pressure drop with the calculated results of previous empirical correlations. Based on Chisholm-C correlation, we obtained a modified correlation for factor C in horizontal channels under transverse... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: block caving, massive deposit, mine design, room and pillar, underground mining, world-class deposit
There are several massive deposits around the world with different geological characteristics. Thus, different mining methods and strategies are applied based on the particularity of each method and mine experience. Particularly, in this work, we review and summarize the underground exploitation of some world-class base metal deposits based on Poland and Chilean experiences. Here, the main geological and mining parameters of Poland and Chilean mines applied in massive deposits are reported and analyzed. In Poland, mainly room and pillar methods (and variants) have been applied in massive deposits. Here, back-filling is required to maintain the mine’s stability due to the large deposit size and open areas. In Chile, the block caving method is commonly used in massive underground deposits where less development is required. Here, the cave is naturally filled with broken material and a large subsidence zone is generated. In this review, it has been observed that different underground meth... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: beneficial electrification, BEV, electric vehicle, electricity, EV, grid, smart charging, smart meter, tariff design, utility
Smart charging of electric vehicles (EVs) is an essential approach to reduce the costs and maximise the benefits of increasing numbers of EVs being connected to the power grid. This article analyses 139 tariffs and services for smart EV charging available in Europe. It finds that while the market for smart EV charging services is growing, there is a lack of consumer information on the savings and broader environmental benefits it offers, such as integration of renewables. Offers are also unevenly distributed across the continent, resulting in unequal access to smart EV charging. The article outlines six strategies to establish framework conditions in energy markets that would address these gaps and establish smart charging as a standard means of charging, to ensure the beneficial integration of EVs into power grids.

Power Grid Infrastructural Resilience against Extreme Events
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: extreme weather, grid reinforcement, infrastructural resilience, natural disaster, power grid hardening, power grid resilience, resilience metrics
Extreme weather events are one of the main causes of large-scale power outages in distribution systems. The changing climate has led to an increase in the frequency and severity of these events, which, if not mitigated, are expected to lead to more instances of widespread outages and the severe societal and economic damages that ensue. Protecting the power grid against such events, which are high impact yet low frequency, requires a paradigm shift in grid design practices. In recent years, many researchers have focused on the resilience of the power grid against extreme weather events by proposing various grid hardening and/or redundancy solutions. The goal of this paper is to provide a survey of the literature related to the infrastructural resilience of the power grid against extreme events. Currently, no standard definitions or metrics exist for power grid resilience, and researchers adopt various models for quantifying and assessing it. Hence, a review of the most commonly used def... Biomimetic and Constructal Design of Alveolus-Inspired Extended Surfaces for Heat Dispersion
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: alveoli, biomimetic design, constructal design, extended surface, mixed convection
Biomimetics is a school of design based on taking inspiration from nature to solve complex problems. This is done with the assumption that the natural world already has solutions to many engineering problems that have been refined through trial and error—an example of the constructal law. In this study, biomimicry is used to investigate the impact of the shape of an extended surface for mixed convection cooling within the context of the cavity problem. This is a simplified two-dimensional case that aims to develop new heat dispersal ideas for use in electronics, power generation, and industrial applications. A numerical model is developed and solved using ANSYS Fluent and the results were examined for varying Reynolds, Rayleigh, and Richardson numbers with the goal of maximizing heat transfer. The results show that the alveolus-inspired fin design provides better heat transfer compared with the design based on a rectangular fin in a cavity.

The cable plays a vital role in roadway support. As the last barrier to prevent roof collapse and impact disaster accidents, it is of great significance to study stress characteristics of cables under impact dynamic load to guide the rock burst roadway support. With high-strength cables of Φ21.6 and Φ21.8 mm and low-resistance high-extension cables of Φ21.5 mm as examples, this paper studied the instantaneous mechanical state and energy dissipation characteristics of different types of cables under impact loads by using impact testing machines and high-frequency data acquisition system. The results show that the impact process can strengthen the strength of the cable. The strength and elongation of anchor cables are a pair of characteristic indexes with an inverse relationship. Simply increasing one index cannot improve the overall impact resistance of the cable. Subject: Process Design
Keywords: barrier effect, Box–Behnken design, breakdown voltage, transformers
In modern power systems, power transformers are considered vital components that can ensure the grid’s continuous operation. In this regard, studying the breakdown in the transformer becomes necessary, especially its insulating system. Hence, in this study, Box−Behnken design (BBD) was used to introduce a prediction model of the breakdown voltage (VBD) for the transformer insulating oil in the presence of different barrier effects for point/plane gap arrangement with alternating current (AC) voltage. Interestingly, the BBD reduces the required number of experiments and their costs to examine the barrier parameter effect on the existing insulating oil VBD. The investigated variables were the barrier location in the gap space (a/d)%, the relative permittivity of the barrier materials (εr), the hole radius in the barrier (hr), the barrier thickness (th), and the barrier inclined angle (θ). Then, only 46 experiment runs are required to build the BBD model for the five barrier variables. Th... [more]
