February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavitation, energy characteristics, model test, runaway, shaft tubular pump
In order to understand the influence of blade angle on the hydraulic characteristics of a shaft tubular pumping device, the energy characteristics, cavitation characteristics, runaway characteristics, and pressure pulsation of the tubular pumping device under different blade angles were studied by a model test. Comparing the efficiency of the best efficiency point of the pumping device under different blade angles, it can be seen that when the blade angle is +4°, the efficiency of the best efficiency point of the pumping device is the lowest, 74.10%. When the blade angle is −4°, the efficiency of the best efficiency point of the pumping device is the highest, 79.75%. Comparing the cavitation characteristics of the pumping device under different blade angles, it can be seen that when the blade angle is −4°, the overall cavitation performance of the pumping device is the best. When the design head point is deviated, the NPSHav (Net positive suction head available) of the pump will increa... [more]

Keywords: concrete lining, fire damage, residual compressive strength, shear-wave tomography, ultrasonic pulse velocity
In this study, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and ultrasonic shear-wave tomography are combined to measure the residual compressive strength (RCS) of small-scale lining concrete blocks and to detect inner defects in the lining structure. The characteristics of and variations in the RCS of test blocks after being exposed to elevated temperatures (200−800 °C) and constant heating times (2 h, 3 h, and 4 h) were studied. At 800 °C, the RCS values reduced by 64.4%, 69.2%, and 74.6% at heating times of 2 h, 3 h, and 4 h. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for the micro-phase analysis of the samples that had been exposed to high temperatures. The heating time and RCS as well as the SEM micro-structure relationship were compared. Finally, a tunnel lining slab sample was designed to simulate the post-fire damage inside the blocks. Additionally, shear-wave tomography with 32 probes was able to detect the ϕ10 mm void defects at a depth of 200 mm.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complexity composite, complexity prediction, data driven, decision making of design, digital design
With the continuous improvement in user demand and the increasingly obvious complexity characteristics, such as strong coupling and nonlinearity of the system, it has become a new problem faced by the decision making of conceptual design. Decision-making methods in conceptual design such as traditional information axioms and the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework cannot provide a good solution for systems with strong coupling and nonlinearity. To fill these gaps, this paper proposes a decision-making method of design for a coupling system based on a complexity composite method (DMDCC). DMDCC is composed of a prediction model and a synthetic paradigm. In the early stages of decision making of design, design-centric complexity (DCC) theory is used to preliminarily sort the schemes. Then, driven by the twin data of existing products, the complexity of function units is obtained by using the prediction model. The complexity of different function units is composited by the comp... Optimization Design and Performance Evaluation of a Hybrid Excitation Claw Pole Machine
Yu Cao, Shushu Zhu, Junyue Yu, Chuang Liu
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: claw pole machine (CPM), hybrid excitation (HE), magnet equivalent circuit (MEC), permanent magnet (PM)
Claw pole machines (CPMs) have the advantages of a simple structure and low cost; therefore, they are commonly used in electric vehicles (EV). However, the methods to improve reliability and efficiency should be studied. So, a new type of hybrid excitation claw pole machine (HE-CPM) for EV is proposed. The permanent magnet (PM) is inserted in the rotor, and the field winding is placed on the front and back ending cover. Because the hybrid flux path of the proposed machine is three-dimensional (3D) and 3D finite element analysis (FEA) is time-consuming, a 3D magnet equivalent circuit (MEC) method considering rotor position is proposed and results between 3D MEC and FEA are compared. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) and 3D MEC are combined in the optimization design of HE-CPM. The optimized results prove the effectiveness of the optimization method. Finally, the flux density distribution, electromagnetic characteristics of HE-CPM are evaluated. The thermal analysis and mechanical stress... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: formation loss, ground settlement, model test, multi-line overlap, shield tunnel
Multi-line overlapping shield tunnels have a complicated layout in the underground space, and the interaction mechanism between tunnels is very complicated. Based on the construction formation of multi-line overlapped shield tunnel with short-distance up- and down-crossing, indoor model tests were conducted to analyze ground settlement (caused by excavation unloading and stratum loss) and the longitudinal deformation law of existing tunnels based on the drainage method, according to the characteristics and control requirements of the short-distance construction of shield tunnels. The results show that as long as the construction strategy of first-down and then-up crossing is adopted, no sudden change in ground settlement would occur. Furthermore, neither the changes in transient settlements nor the final ground settlement would be too large, which is different from the strategy of first-up and then-down crossing; the first-up and then-down crossing strategy generally increases the curv... Daniel Lager, Edith Haslinger, Robin Friedrich, Stefan Hoyer, Doris Rupprecht
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: borehole heat exchanger, specific heat capacity, subsoil drill core, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, thermophysical properties
Urban heat islands (UHI) occur especially in inner-city areas due to small green areas, an excess of high solar heat, and low air circulation. One solution is the “harvesting” of excess solar urban heat through shallow absorber ducts, which are then used in borehole heat exchanger (BHE) fields for later use for heat or cold storage. Knowing the thermophysical properties of the subsurface as accurately as possible is of great importance in the design and configuring of a borehole heat exchanger field as a thermal energy storage system. In this study, a subsoil drill core from a BHE, with a depth of 80 m, was used to determine temperature dependent effective thermal conductivity based on the heat flow meter method, the specific heat capacity based on differential scanning calorimetry, and thermal expansion based on dilatometry in moist and dry states. The results have shown that the actual moisture content of the subsoil sample has a strong impact on the thermal conductivity, as well as... [more]

Keywords: compression test, Energy Efficiency, experimental design, oil recovery, oil-bearing seeds
The effect of heating and freezing pretreatments on rapeseed oil yield and the volume of oil energy under uniaxial compression loading was investigated. Four separate experiments were carried out to achieve the study objective. The first and second experiments were performed to determine the compression parameters (deformation, mass of oil, oil yield, oil expression efficiency, energy, volume of oil and volume of oil energy). The third and fourth experiments identified the optimal factors (heating temperatures: 40, 60 and 80 °C, freezing temperatures: −2, −22 and −36 °C, heating times: 15, 30 and 45 min and speeds: 5, 10 and 15 mm/min) using the Box−Behnken design via the response surface methodology where the oil yield and volume of oil energy were the main responses. The optimal operating factors for obtaining a volume of oil energy of 0.0443 kJ/mL were a heating temperature of 40 °C, heating time of 45 min and speed of 15 mm/min. The volume of oil energy of 0.169 kJ/mL was reached a... [more]

Keywords: design of experiment, film picking mechanism, parameter optimization, the recovery rate of the residual film
When the film is under no stress, it does not show any stiffness or capability to withstand loads. Therefore, with the help of ANSYS motion, the author applied pre-stress, controlled point coordinates and the equation of equivalent stress surface and used form-finding conditions to explore the equilibrium state of the films in different depths. The author established curve fitting equations and designed a new membrane-removing mulch film recovery machine. The author also analyzed key components and separately established regression equations between recovery rate, damage rate, release rate and the working angle of film picking mechanism, as well as the regression equation between the depth of picking mechanism into the soil and the working angle of clamping conveyor. Then the author conducted the variance analysis on these regression equations. By using Design Expert 8.0.6 to optimize the solution, when the working angle of the pick-up mechanism is 27.31°, the depth of the pick-up mech... [more]

Biological treatment is a key technology in landfill leachate treatment However, often its efficiency is not high enough due to the pollutants in concentrations above the critical ones. The present study aimed to investigate the adaptive responses that occur in activated sludge (AS) during landfill leachate purification. A model process with AS from a municipal wastewater treatment plant and landfill leachate in increasing concentrations was constructed. The data showed that when dilutions 25 and 50 times had been applied the structure of the AS was preserved, but the COD cannot be reduced below 209 mg O2/L. The feed of undiluted leachate destroyed the AS structure as SVI was reduced to 1 mL/g, biotic index to 1, floc size was greatly reduced and COD remained high (2526 mg O2/L). The dominant group of protozoa was changed from attached to free-swimming ciliates. An increase of the bacterial groups responsible for the xenobiotics elimination (aerobic heterotrophs, genera Pseudomonas, Ac... [more]

Keywords: Modelling, operational envelopes, operational flexibility, pharmaceutical manufacture, uncertainty
Market globalisation, shortened patent lifetimes and the ongoing shift towards personalised medicines exert unprecedented pressure on the pharmaceutical industry. In the push for continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing, processes need to be shown to be agile and robust enough to handle variations with respect to product demands and operating conditions. In this paper we examine the use of operational envelopes to study the trade-off between the design and operational flexibility of the fluid bed dryer at the heart of a tablet manufacturing process. The operating flexibility of this unit is key to the flexibility of the full process and its supply chain. The methodology shows that for the fluid bed dryer case study there is significant effect on flexibility of the process at different drying times with the optimal obtained at 700 s. The flexibility is not affected by the change in volumetric flowrate, but only by the change in temperature. Here the method used a black box model to show... [more]

Keywords: DC/DC boost converter, extended grey wolf optimizer, fractional order proportional integral derivative, grey wolf optimizer, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
This paper presents a comparison of optimizers for tuning a fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers, which were applied to a DC/DC boost converter. Grey wolf optimizer (GWO) and extended grey wolf optimizer (EGWO) have been chosen to achieve suitable parameters. This strategy aims to improve and optimize a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) output power quality through its link with the boost converter. The model and controllers have been implemented in a MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. This study has been conducted to compare the effectiveness of the proposed controllers in the transient, accuracy in tracking the reference current, steady-state, dynamic responses, overshoots, and response time. Results showed that the combination EGWO-FOPID had significant advantages over the rest of the optimized controllers.

Keywords: sedimentation, titanium coagulants, water treatment
As part of the work, studies of the quality of wastewater from alcohol production were carried out; the main characteristics were determined, such as the charge of dispersed particles and the content of organic compounds and fats. A comparison is made of the effectiveness of titanium salts, traditional aluminum, and iron-containing coagulants. It has been established that titanium salts are much more effective than traditional reagents, but their high cost significantly limits the scope of their application. The possibility of increasing the efficiency of traditional coagulants by adding various titanium salts in an amount of up to 10% of the mass has been proved. It has been established that the addition of titanium compounds to aluminum or iron-containing coagulants makes it possible to increase the cleaning efficiency by an average of 10−20% while a significant reduction in the dose of reagents is possible, which will have a positive effect on the cost of the cleaning process. It wa... [more]

Keywords: aerobic granules, berberine, distribution, particle size, wastewater treatment
As important parameters in the characterization of aerobic granulation, the shape and average diameter were related to substrates. The previous studies disclosed that the morphology change in aerobic granules was the result of growth and the relatively strong hydrodynamic shear force. No further exploration of the size distribution of the aerobic granules has been conducted. To better understand the impact of toxic compounds on aerobic granules’ growth during their formation, the properties of aerobic granules were traced over 81 days in 3 sequencing batch reactors fed with acetate and berberine wastewater, especially the particle size and size distribution. The results showed that the aerobic granules were cultivated by the simulated acetate wastewater (R1), simulated berberine wastewater (R2), and effluent from an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) reactor which was fed with industrial berberine wastewater (R3). The reactors exhibited different COD removal efficiencies, and the MLSS and... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, biogas combined cycle, sewage water, sewage-sludge treatment, waste management
Sewage-water treatment comprehends primary, secondary, and tertiary steps to produce reusable water after removing sewage contaminants. However, a sewage-water treatment plant is typically a power and energy consumer and produces high volumes of sewage sludge mainly generated in the primary and secondary steps. The use of more efficient anaerobic digestion of sewage water with sewage sludge can produce reasonable flowrates of biogas, which is shown to be a consolidated strategy towards the energy self-sufficiency and economic feasibility of sewage-water treatment plants. Anaerobic digestion can also reduce the carbon footprint of energy sources since the biogas produced can replace fossil fuels for electricity generation. In summary, since the socio-economic importance of sewage treatment is high, this review examined works that contemplate: (i) improvements of sewage-water treatment plant bioenergy production and economic performances; (ii) the exploitation of technology alternatives... Keywords: design, MINLP mathematical model, Optimization, plate heat exchanger
Plate heat exchangers (PHEs) have significant potential to improve energy efficiency in the process industries. However, realizing their full potential to achieve such energy savings requires a systematic approach to screen the many options available. Thus, this work presents a generalized novel approach for the optimal design of both gasket and welded plate heat exchangers, with different plate geometries and flow configurations. A new design method coupled with an optimization framework is proposed to obtain the optimal solution with minimum total transfer area by setting up a series of relations between temperatures among each single-pass block with known inlet and outlet temperatures of process streams. An MINLP mathematical model is developed to select the best combination of the flow pass configuration and available commercial plate geometries within practical design constraints. The differences between the design methodology of gasket and welded PHEs are highlighted. Two case st... [more]

Keywords: aerobic biofilm, automated pilot, EGSB, salinity
A 20-ft containerized biological pilot system consisting of both an anaerobic expended granular sludge bed (EGSB) and an aerobic biofilm continuous flow intermittent clean (CFIC®) system has been designed, constructed, and delivered onsite at a pharmaceutical wastewater producer for a wastewater treatment study. The pilot was operated for a total of 317 days, including 147 days of adaptive phase and 170 days of testing phase. A pilot adaptive phase feeding wastewater COD concentration from 2 to 50 g/L with salinity up to 16 g/L was carried out, achieving EGSB where COD removal reached over 80 to 95% at OLR up to 22 kg COD/m3·d. In the testing phase, with repressive practical wastewater, the EGSB can remove over 97% of feed COD (with up to 82% acetic acid) at an average 16.3 kg COD/m3·d. The high wastewater salinity at 20 g/L did not inhibit COD removal efficiency by the system. The complete system with EGSB and aerobic stage was very stable and removed over 90−97% of the total COD depe... [more]

Keywords: classifier, design, Modelling, separation, zigzag
The zigzag (ZZ) classifier is a sorting and classification device with a wide range of applications (e.g. recycling, food industry). Due to the possible variation of geometry and process settings, the apparatus is used for various windows of operation due to the specifications of the separation (e.g. cut sizes from 100 µm to several decimetres, compact and fluffy materials as well as foils). Since the ZZ classifier gains more and more interest in recycling applications, it is discussed in this paper, with regards to its design, mode of operation, influencing parameters and the research to date. Research on the ZZ-classifier has been ongoing on for more than 50 years and can be divided into mainly experimental studies and modelling approaches.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: niching algorithm, ON–OFF method, smoothing method, synchronous reluctance motor, topology optimization
In this paper, we propose combining topology optimization with a parametric algorithm (TOCPA) to design an industrial synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) that satisfies super-premium efficiency (IE4). TOCPA consists of two main processes. An improved niching algorithm is proposed as an existing parametric algorithm, and multiple optimal points were identified quickly and effectively within the design range specified by the user. Existing parametric algorithms lack the ability to find unpredictable new optimal shapes; therefore, topology optimization has been added. TOCPA converges the two optimization methods to compensate for the shortcomings of each and maximizes the advantages. In addition, the boundary surface ON−OFF method is applied to accelerate the topology optimization process. Subsequent ratio-based smoothing techniques smooth out discontinuous interfaces and remove clusters to improve the torque characteristics and reduce the manufacturing difficulty. Finally, the torque ri... [more]

Keywords: defect detection, K-means++, loss function, object detection, YOLOv3
The surface defects of industrial structural parts have the characteristics of a large-scale span and many small objects, so a novel YOLOv3 model, the YOLOv3-ALL algorithm, is proposed in this paper to solve the problem of precise defect detection. The K-means++ algorithm is combined with the intersection-over-union (IoU) and comparison of the prior box for clustering, which improves the clustering effect. The convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is embedded in the network, thus improving the ability of the network to obtain key information in the image. By adding fourth-scale prediction, the detection capability of a YOLOv3 network for small-object defects is greatly improved. A loss function is designed, which adds the generalized intersection-over-union (GIoU) loss combined with focal loss to solve the problems of L2 loss and class imbalance in samples. Experiments regarding contour-defect detection for stamping parts show that the mean average precision (mAP) of the YOLOV3-A... [more]

Keywords: axial blade, efficiency enhancement and noise reduction, outer edge bending, sound quality
Outer edge bending is already used on the axial fan blades of air conditioners, reducing the leakage flow loss at the blade tip and suppressing the tip vortex development, thereby improving fan aerodynamic and acoustic performance. However, there are few studies on the multi-parameter design and optimization of this complicated structure, and most studies only focus on the overall sound pressure level rather than the sound quality when evaluating the fan noise. This study investigated the effects of outer edge bending structure on the aerodynamic performance and sound quality of air conditioners’ axial fans by experiments and numerical methods. Based on the orthogonal design method, the effects of three bending parameters, the circumferential starting angle, radial relative position, and the bending degree effects on the performance of the axial flow fan blade were analyzed, and the best efficiency scheme was selected. A comparative analysis of the preferred and the original bending sc... [more]

Keywords: 1-propyl alcohol, dipropyl ether, energy savings, extractive dividing wall column
The focus of this work is the study of the extractive dividing wall column (EDWC) for separating the azeotropic mixture of dipropyl ether and 1-propyl alcohol with N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC) as the entrainer. Three separation sequences are investigated, including a conventional extractive distillation sequence (CEDS), EDWC and a pressure swing distillation sequence (PSDS). The static simulation results showed that the EDWC with DMAC as the entrainer is more economically attractive than CEDS and PSDS. Subsequently, a control structure CS1 based on a three-temperature control loop and a control structure CS2 with the vapor split ratio as the manipulated variable are investigated for the EDWC. Their dynamic control performances are evaluated by facing large feed flow rates and composition disturbances. The results showed that the CS1 can deal with feed flow rate disturbance effectively. However, the transient deviation is large and the settling time is too long when facing feed flow co... [more]

Keywords: accidents, digitalization, process safety, risk analysis, weak signals
Weak signals in risk analysis digitalization are of great importance for preventing major accidents in risk analysis in the process industry, especially for process operations and production. However, some of the negative impacts are incorrect operational risk identification, significant inventory carrying costs, disruption of risk frequency, and risk consequence analysis, all of which will signal inaccurate information about unforeseen and current dangers in process facilities and operational environments. While the positive impacts are viewed as an early warning system that provides information on operational risk system status, the identification of potential risk weaknesses in process facilities, indicators of a transition or an emerging problem that may become significant in the future, highlighting future assumptions, challenge our views of the future and expand the selection of a processing facility.
