The Role of Regulators in Promoting the Procurement of Flexibility Services within the Electricity Distribution System: A Survey of Seven Leading Countries
Karim L. Anaya, Michael G. Pollitt
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution energy resources, distribution system operators, flexibility services, procurement, regulation
This paper identifies and explores regulatory issues that may have an impact on the use of flexibility services by distribution utilities to solve grid constraints. This can be done by flexible distributed energy resources which can be instructed, for instance, to reduce export generating capacity or increasing consumption. We want to identify how regulation can better support the development of the future distribution utility in its role as neutral market facilitator, enabling more competition in local flexibility markets and optimal use of resources. A set of questionnaires were designed to capture the insights around important aspects of the regulation of flexibility markets (utilities’ network incentives, network tariff structure, market design for flexibility markets, etc.). These were sent to distribution utilities, energy regulators, energy marketplaces, energy associations and relevant experts from seven jurisdictions. The responses suggest a collective interest in the procurem... [more]
Designing Cement-Based Grouting in a Rock Mass for Underground Impermeabilization
Iñigo Escobal-Marcos, Martina-Inmaculada Álvarez-Fernández, María-Belén Prendes-Gero, Celestino González-Nicieza
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cement grouting, rock mass grouting, underground waterproofing
Fractured rock masses below the water table are a problem in underground excavations because of their low strength and high permeability. Nowadays, these negative connotations can be reduced with techniques such as injection of cement, microcement, or resins grouts. These materials increase the rock mass cohesion while reducing the flow of water through the discontinuities. This paper describes the work carried out to design a waterproofing screen for a three-storey underground basement located in a building near the Bilbao estuary (Northern Spain) and with problems of water seepage from the river. First, a survey of the rock mass is carried out. This survey shows the presence of highly fractured zones and the variability of the permeability as functions of the fractures. Subsequently, the effect on permeability caused by the injection of cement grouts and microcement is studied by means of two pilot injection boreholes and eight control boreholes. Finally, a behavioural model is propo... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fluid mixture, recompression Brayton cycle, solar thermal plant, supercritical carbon dioxide
In this work, an evaluation and quantification of the impact of using mixtures based on supercritical carbon dioxide “s-CO2” (s-CO2/COS, s-CO2/H2S, s-CO2/NH3, s-CO2/SO2) are made as a working fluid in simple and complex recompression Brayton s-CO2 power cycle configurations that have pressure drops in their components. These cycles are coupled with a solar thermal plant with parabolic-trough collector (PTC) technology. The methodology used in the calculation performance is to establish values of the heat recuperator total conductance (UAtotal) between 5 and 25 MW/K. The main conclusion of this work is that the cycle’s efficiency has improved due to using s-CO2 mixtures as working fluid; this is significant compared to the results obtained using the standard fluid (pure s-CO2). Furthermore, a techno-economic analysis is carried out that compares each configuration’s costs using pure s-CO2 and a mixture of s-CO2/COS with a molar fraction (70/30), respectively, as working fluid where rele... April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy loads, EUI, Grasshopper, Ladybug tools, optimisation, outdoor thermal comfort, urban typologies, UTCI
The recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) urge for the reconceptualization of our design of the urban built environments. However, current efforts to integrate urban environmental assessment into practice in Egypt are proving insufficient. This paper utilises the Ladybug tools simulation plugins to investigate the impact of changing the morphological characteristics of three-block typologies (scattered, linear and courtyard) and their associated parameters to understand their multidimensional relationship with environmental conditions, outdoor thermal comfort and energy use intensity. This study based in Cairo, Egypt, considers 3430 hypothetical geometrical configurations comprising of a variety of design parameters and indicators. The results show a strong correlation between the design parameters and the combined performance of thermal comfort and energy consumption (R2 = 0.84), with urban density having the strongest impact on both thermal comfort... Separate Collected Versus Mechanical Segregated Organic Fractions in Terms of Fertilizers Suitability
Przemysław Seruga, Małgorzata Krzywonos
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, compost, digestate, effluents, organic waste
Nowadays, municipal solid waste (MSW) management is one of the most critical issues. MSW may threaten the environment; however, the concerning high organic fraction content can be useful. This study aimed to compare the suitability of mechanically sorted organic fraction (OF) of MSW and source-segregated biowaste for biofertilizer usage. The compost and the effluents compositions were analyzed. Compost derived from biowaste can be applied to the soil, while, after processing OFMSW, the metal contents are too high. The exceeding limit values were noted, e.g., lead (over 80 mg/kg) and chrome (75 mg/kg). Effluents from biowaste treatment fulfill the national and UE fertilizers’ requirements, considering the heavy metal contents, while effluents from OFMSW treatments exceed the limit values. The biggest exceedings were observed for nickel (over 3 mg/kg) and zinc (over 500 mg/kg). In general, the heavy metal contamination of byproducts from the OFMSW treatment was much higher. At the same t... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerobic hydrolysis and acidification, lignocellulose, methane production, particle size reduction, rice straw
The effect of reducing particle size on physical properties, the methane yield and energy flow were investigated through the biochemical methane potential (BMP) experiment of aerobic-anaerobic digestion (AAD) of rice straw (RS). The whole straw was crushed through four sieves of different aperture sizes (1, 3, 5, and 7 mm) to obtain the actual and non-uniform particle size distribution (PSD). The results indicated that the actual particle sizes were normally or logarithmic normally distributed. Reducing particle size could significantly promote the aerobic hydrolysis and acidification process, increase the content of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from 4408.78 to 6225.15 mg/L and the degradation of volatile solids (VS) from 40.56% to 50.49%. The results of path analysis suggested that particle size reduction played an important role in improving lignocellulosic degradability, which was the main factor affecting methane production with the comprehensive decision of 0.4616. The maximum meth... [more]

Keywords: dynamic impedance measurements, lithium-ion capacitor, Optimization, temperature
In order to obtain the full impedance characteristics of a lithium-ion capacitor as a function of temperature, the authors proposed the use of dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Impedance tests were carried out under wide range of dynamic temperature changes for lithium-ion supercapacitors. Significant differences in electrochemical processes were observed as a result of working temperature. Moreover, the quality of fitting of the equivalent circuits most frequently used in impedance analysis of lithium-ion capacitors was discussed. The proposed methodology allows for a comprehensive characterization of the performance of these devices and provides key information for their optimization in wide range of operations.

Kai Wang, Lianguo Wang, Bo Ren
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: advanced grouting, failure mechanism, fault fracture zone, support technology
This paper introduces a case study on the failure mechanism and support design of a roadway tunnel in the fault fracture zone of the 106 mining area in the Yuandian no.2 coal mine. Based on the on-site geological conditions (in-situ stress test, borehole television imaging, and lithological analysis), the failure mechanism of the roadway tunnel in the fault fracture zone was studied. The test results showed that the high tectonic stress, fractured rock, and poor lithology are the primary reasons for the roadway instability. According to the support principles of grouting reinforcement, pre-reinforced support, and rational support range, a new type of combined support technology was proposed, including advanced grouting, grouting bolts, and grouting anchor cables. A 100 m roadway section was selected for field testing using the new support scheme, and detailed deformation monitoring was performed. Monitoring results showed that the roadway deformation under the new support was significa... [more]

Keywords: economic analysis, Energy Efficiency, LED corn bulbs, street lighting
The costs related to the operation of street lighting can be significant expenses for municipalities; therefore, it is very important to take advantage of opportunities for improving energy efficiency. In this paper, the authors studied the effects of the implementation of energy efficiency measures in a street lighting system. Different scenarios, including replacing luminaires, replacing inefficient lamps, and installing a dimming control system, are analysed. The model includes a detailed analysis of the techno-economic characteristics of both LED street luminaires and LED corn bulbs available on the market. The results show that the replacement of low-power, high-intensity discharge lamps with LED corn bulbs is an economically favourable solution that provides desirable economic project parameters with relatively low investments. Moreover, in the case of a relatively low price of electricity for street lighting, it is the preferable solution in most scenarios.

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: design, FEM, outer rotor, PMaSynRM, synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM)
Today’s automotive industry has focused its studies on electric vehicles (EVs) or hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) rather than gasoline-powered vehicles. For this reason, more investment has been made in electric motors with high efficiency, high torque density, and high-power factor to be used in both EVs and HEVs. In this study, an outer-rotor permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMaSynRM) with a new rotor topology was designed for use in an EV. The design has a transversally laminated anisotropic (TLA) rotor structure. In addition, neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets were used in rotor topology. The stator slots were designed as distributed windings, so torque ripples are minimized. At the same time, the maximum electromagnetic torque was achieved. The analysis of the designed motor was carried out using the finite element method (FEM). Optimal values of motor parameters were obtained by improving the rotor geometry of the three-phase PMaSynRM in order to obtain m... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicle, gear meshing ratio, gear reference efficiency, planetary gear, transmission
As environmental regulations have been strengthened worldwide since the Paris Climate Agreement, the automobile industry is shifting its production paradigm to focus on eco-friendly vehicles such as electric vehicles and hydrogen-battery vehicles. Governments are banning fossil fuel vehicles by law and expanding the introduction of green vehicles. The energy efficiency of electric vehicles that use a limited power source called batteries depends on the driving environment. Applying a two-speed transmission to an electric vehicle can optimize average speed and performance efficiency at low speeds, and achieve maximum speed with minimal torque at high speeds. In this study, a two-speed transmission for an electric vehicle has been developed, to be used in a compact electric vehicle. This utilizes a planetary gear of a total of three pairs, made of a single module which was intended to enable two-speed. The ring gear was removed, and the carrier was used in common. When shifting, the ener... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COMSOL, distribution transformer, electrostatic, gas-insulated, heat, R410A
Electricity companies around the world are constantly seeking ways to provide electricity more safely and efficiently while reducing the negative impact on the environment. Mineral oils have been the most popular transformer insulation, having excellent electrical insulating properties, but have many problems such as high flammability, significant cleaning problems, and are toxic to fish and wildlife. This paper presents an alternative approach to mineral oil: a transformer design that is clean and provides better performance and environmental benefits. A 50 kVA, 34.5/0.4 kV gas insulated distribution transformer was designed and evaluated using the COMSOL Multiphysics environment. R410A was used as insulation material. R410A is a near-azeotropic mixture of difluoromethane (CH2F2, called R-32) and pentafluoro ethane (C2HF5, called R-125), which is used as a refrigerant in air conditioning applications. It has excellent properties including environmentally friendly, no-ozone depletion,... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, liquefaction, LNG carrier, single mixed refrigerant
Recently, due to regulations on emissions of vessels, fuel is changing to liquefied natural gas (LNG). When using LNG as fuel, it is advantageous in terms of fuel saving and boil-off gas control if a small-scale liquefaction process is installed on the ship. However, due to the limited space, the small-scale liquefaction process for ships has to consider not only efficiency but also simplicity and compactness. In this respect, it is different from the process in onshore liquefaction plants, and research on this is insufficient. Therefore, this paper performs a comparative analysis in terms of efficiency by simplifying the composition of the mixed refrigerant in the liquefaction process. Additionally, a single mixed refrigerant process is used to pursue the compactness of the process. For comparative analysis, the liquefaction process is designed and simulated, and the specific power consumption calculated as the power required to liquefy the unit LNG is used as the objective function t... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical design, finite element method, multiobjective genetic algorithm, transverse flux motor, vehicle traction
Transverse flux motors (TFMs) are being investigated to be used in vehicle traction applications due to their high torque density. In this paper, a two-phase axial-gap transverse flux motor is designed for an electric scooter, proposing a novel analytical design method. First, the dimensioning equations of the motor are obtained based on the vehicle requirements, and the stationary dq model is calculated. Then, the motor is optimized using a multiobjective genetic algorithm, and finally a 3D-FEM verification is made. Both the motor structure and the design method aim to have a low complexity, in order to favor the sizing and manufacturing processes through a low computation time and simple core shapes. This approach has not yet been explored in axial-gap TFMs.

Keywords: contracts, data centres, district heating and cooling, excess heat, low-temperature, urban waste heat recovery
Urban Waste Heat Recovery, heat recovery from low-temperature urban sources such as data centres and metro systems, has a great deal of potential in terms of meeting domestic and commercial heat demands whilst significantly reducing carbon emissions. Urban sources of heat are advantageous in that they tend to be close to areas of high heat demand and are therefore highly suitable as inputs to existing and newly constructed district heating networks. This paper has two main focuses. Firstly, the issue of efficiency in waste heat recovery is addressed with a focus on Technical, Economic, Social, and Environmental (TESE) efficiencies, which we consider should be given equal consideration. Secondly, we address the question of contractual efficiency and argue that contracts should be underpinned by mathematical modelling. We then focus on the contractual relationship between the owner of the waste heat and the district heating operator and consider the question of waste heat pricing. We sug... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic co-digestion, coffee pulp, experimental design, kinetic model, raw cheese whey
In this paper, a study on the feasibility of the treatment of raw cheese whey by anaerobic co-digestion using coffee pulp residues as a co-substrate is presented. It considers raw whey generated in artisanal cheese markers, which is generally not treated, thus causing environmental pollution problems. An experimental design was carried out evaluating the effect of pH and the substrate ratio on methane production at 35 °C (i.e., mesophilic conditions). The interaction of the parameters on the co-substrate degradation and the methane production was analyzed using a response surface analysis. Furthermore, two kinetic models were proposed (first order and modified Gompertz models) to determine the dynamic profiles of methane yield. The results show that co-digestion of the raw whey is favored at pH = 6, reaching a maximum yield of 71.54 mLCH4 gVSrem−1 (31.5% VS removed) for raw cheese whey and coffee pulp ratio of 1 gVSwhey gVSCoffe−1. The proposed kinetic models successfully fit the exper... [more]

Keywords: experimental study, fruit packaging box, thermal performance
Packaging was recently identified as an essential element in addressing the key challenge of sustainable food supply and is gaining interest among researchers. It is a central element in food quality preservation due to its role in heat and mass exchange with the external atmosphere, contributing to the preservation of food quality during storage and extending food shelf life. This work proposes three new packaging configurations with the same size but different geometry and ventilation hole sizes and geometry, that change the conditions in which the heat and mass exchange occurs, during either the cooling period of fruits, inside the cooling chamber, or during the period when the packaging is exposed to ambient conditions, outside the cooling chamber. For this purpose, packages with fruit models that replicate the properties of real fruit were subjected to a cooling process inside a cooling chamber for 8 h. Subsequently, during the heating phase, the packages were exposed to ambient c... [more]

Keywords: boost converter, cascaded converters, high voltage-gain converters, Luo converter
We designed and implemented a single-switch step-up DC-DC converter based on cascaded boost and Luo converters. The proposed converter demonstrated a quadratic voltage gain and a high efficiency, which makes it suitable for renewable energy applications, where a high voltage gain ratio is desired without imposing a high number of bulky items or employing a high duty cycle of the active switches. This converter benefits from the continuity of the input current waveform, which equips the maximum utilisation of renewable energy sources. While a transformer-less high voltage-gain was achieved, the voltage and current stresses of the power switch and diodes were kept low in comparison with the existing quadratic DC-DC converters. We analysed the converter in both continuous and discontinuous conduction modes. A non-ideal model of components was considered for power loss and efficiency calculations and comparisons. Finally, the simulation results were extracted with PLECS and validated with... [more]

Keywords: electrochemical processes, Hydrogen, hydrogen cycle, mechano-chemical processes, regeneration of sodium borohydride, sodium borohydride, thermochemical processes
In 2007, the US Department of Energy recommended a no-go on NaBH4 hydrolysis for onboard applications; however, the concept of a NaBH4-H2-PEMFC system has the potential to become a primary source for on-demand power supply. Despite the many efforts to study this technology, most of the published papers focus on catalytic performance. Nevertheless, the development of a practical reaction system to close the NaBH4-H2 cycle remains a critical issue. Therefore, this work provides an overview of the research progress on the solutions for the by-product rehydrogenation leading to the regeneration of NaBH4 with economic potential. It is the first to compare and analyze the main types of processes to regenerate NaBH4: thermo-, mechano-, and electrochemical. Moreover, it considers the report by Demirci et al. on the main by-product of sodium borohydride hydrolysis. The published literature already reported efficient NaBH4 regeneration; however, the processes still need more improvements. Moreov... [more]

Keywords: behaviour of drivers and pedestrians, pedestrian crossing, pedestrian safety, road safety
Pedestrians are participants and, most likely, fatalities in every third road traffic accident in Poland. Over 30% of all fatalities on Polish roads are pedestrians. Accidents with pedestrians are very often the result of various factors related to the infrastructure and behaviour of pedestrians and drivers. The objective of the work was to assess driver and pedestrian behaviour in pedestrian crossing areas. The research also served as a pilot study for similar work to be conducted across Poland, and constituted the basis for monitoring the behaviour of road users in the area of pedestrian crossings. Parameters which must be analysed were identified on the basis of field studies. Principles of selecting test sites were adopted, and measurement methods for pedestrian crossing areas are presented. The influence of the location of the selected test cross-section infrastructure parameters on the behaviour of road users in pedestrian crossing areas is demonstrated. The results of the study... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brick schema, key performance indicators, occupancy detection, occupant-centric, project haystack, space utilization
Occupant behavior can significantly influence the operation and performance of buildings. Many occupant-centric key performance indicators (KPIs) rely on having accurate counts of the number of occupants in a building, which is very different to how occupancy information is currently collected in the majority of buildings today. To address this gap, the authors develop a standardized methodology for the calculation of percent space utilization for buildings, which is formulated with respect to two prevalent operational data schemas: the Brick Schema and Project Haystack. The methodology is scalable across different levels of spatial granularity and irrespective of sensor placement. Moreover, the methods are intended to make use of typical occupancy sensors that capture presence level occupancy and not counts of people. Since occupant-hours is a preferable metric to use in KPI calculations, a method to convert between percent space utilization and occupant-hours using the design occupan... [more]

Keywords: higher viscosity, interfacial friction factor, pressure drop, two-phase flow, vertical pipes
Proper selection and application of interfacial friction factor correlations has a significant impact on prediction of key flow characteristics in gas−liquid two-phase flows. In this study, experimental investigation of gas−liquid flow in a vertical pipeline with internal diameter of 0.060 m is presented. Air and oil (with viscosities ranging from 100−200 mPa s) were used as gas and liquid phases, respectively. Superficial velocities of air ranging from 22.37 to 59.06 m/s and oil ranging from 0.05 to 0.16 m/s were used as a test matrix during the experimental campaign. The influence of estimates obtained from nine interfacial friction factor models on the accuracy of predicting pressure gradient, film thickness and gas void fraction was investigated by utilising a two-fluid model. Results obtained indicate that at liquid viscosity of 100 mPa s, the interfacial friction factor correlation proposed by Belt et al. (2009) performed best for pressure gradient prediction while the Moeck (197... [more]
