Ze Zhou, Fuwu Yan, Gengxin Zhang, Dawei Wu, Hongming Xu
July 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: droplet collision, explosive boiling, heated surface, high-speed imaging, Leidenfrost effect
This study uses high-speed imaging to investigate the dynamic collision behavior of a single hydrous ethanol droplet in different water/ethanol ratios on a heated horizontal glass surface. The initial droplet diameter varied from 3.3 to 4.1 mm, and the impact velocity was 0.57 m/s. The study covers a range of surface temperatures (373 K to 553 K) and ethanol mass fractions (0% to 100%) to reveal four regimes of droplet-impinging behaviors, including quiescent surface evaporation, puffing or partial boiling, explosive nuclear boiling, and the Leidenfrost effect. The addition of volatile ethanol to less volatile water shifts the droplet collision behavior toward explosive boiling and the Leidenfrost phenomenon. As the ethanol mass fraction increased from 0% to 100%, the superheat limit temperature decreased by approximately 80 K, while the Leidenfrost temperature decreased by at least 100 K. The dimensionless droplet diameter in the regime of droplet spreading with quiescent surface evap... [more]

July 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, calcium oxide, cerium oxide, steel slag, transesterification
For further resource utilization of solid waste steel slag and the reduction in biodiesel production costs, this study used steel slag as a carrier to synthesize a CaO-CeO2/slag solid base catalyst for the effective transesterification of palm oil into fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). The synthesis involved a two-step impregnation of steel slag with nitrate of calcium and cerium and thermal activation at 800 °C for 180 min. Then, the catalysts’ textural, chemical, and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption properties were characterized. The catalytic activity depended highly on the ratio of Ca-Ce to steel slag mass; the CaO-CeO2/slag-0.8 catalyst showed outstanding performance. Characterization showed that the surface area and total basicity of the Ca-Ce/slag-0.8 catalyst were 3.66 m2/g and 1.289 mmol/g, respectively. The reactivity results showed that FAMEs obtained using 7 wt.% catalyst, 9:1 of methanol-to-palm-oil molar ratio, 180 min reaction duration, and 70 °C reaction temperatur... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: calcium sulfate whisker, cleaner production, FGD gypsum, filtrate recycle, hydrothermal method
Calcium sulfate whiskers (CSWs) were synthesized using purified flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum as raw materials using a hydrothermal method, where the filtrate was recycled back to the reaction slurry. The study investigated the impact of pH and Cu2+ concentration in the reaction solution with or without reagent compensation. The effects of cycle number on the crystal morphology, phase structure, and productivity of the hydrothermal products were also examined. The findings indicate that the crystal morphology and quality of the CSWs deteriorated as the cycle number increased due to a rise in pH and a decrease in Cu2+ concentrations in the reaction solution without reagent compensation. However, adding a specific amount of H2SO4 and CuCl2 to the slurry with filtrate recycle maintained the long fibrous shape of the hydrothermal products for up to seven cycles while also increasing their productivity from 73.7% to 86%. Regardless of reagent compensation, the cycle number of filtra... [more]

July 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element, gear parameters, high-tooth gear, strength calculation
This article studies the calculation method for the tooth root bending stress of a high-tooth gear pair with a high contact ratio. The boundary point of the double-tooth meshing zone of the high-tooth gear pair is used as the loading point for the load, and the calculation formula for the bending stress at the dangerous section of the tooth root is obtained. By using ANSYS finite element simulation, the effect of the addendum coefficient, pressure angle, and other gear parameters on the bending stress of the tooth root is studied. The analysis shows that increasing the pressure angle will reduce the bending strength of the tooth root. Increasing the coefficient of a tooth’s top height will lead to an increase in the bending strength of the tooth root. Comparing the finite element analysis (FEA) results with the theoretical calculation results, the analysis shows that under low loads, the maximum error of the theoretical calculation values of the driving toothed gear and driven gear sha... Keywords: broken coal, gob-side entry driving (GED), grouting, roadway surrounding rock control, section coal pillar width
To solve the problem of considerable deformation of the tailgate in a fully mechanized caving face, the position of the main roof fracture line is first obtained by theoretical calculation, combined with the results of a similar simulation test and numerical simulation analysis. The width of the section coal pillar in the tailgate is determined to be 11.5 m. Based on the distribution characteristics of deviatoric stress and the plastic zone of surrounding rock, combined with the location characteristics and geological conditions, a new zoning control design approach is proposed, a “two pillars, three zones, and three parts” arrangement for the surrounding rock of the tailgate. The targeted two-entry support design is carried out following common engineering practices. Mine pressure monitoring data were used to verify the results of the new two-entry design. The comparison shows that the supporting technology can effectively control the considerable deformation of the surrounding rock,... [more]

Keywords: active metal, alternative cofactor, biocatalysis, bioelectronics, cytochrome P450, electrochemistry, electron transfer, photocatalysis
The functional significance of cytochrome P450s (CYP) enzymes is their ability to catalyze the biotransformation of xenobiotics and endogenous compounds. P450 enzymes catalyze regio- and stereoselective oxidations of C-C and C-H bonds in the presence of oxygen as a cosubstrate. Initiation of cytochrome P450 catalytic cycle needs an electron donor (NADPH, NADH cofactor) in nature or alternative artificial electron donors such as electrodes, peroxides, photo reduction, and construction of enzymatic “galvanic couple”. In our review paper, we described alternative “handmade” electron sources to support cytochrome P450 catalysis. Physical-chemical methods in relation to biomolecules are possible to convert from laboratory to industry and construct P450-bioreactors for practical application. We analyzed electrochemical reactions using modified electrodes as electron donors. Electrode/P450 systems are the most analyzed in terms of the mechanisms underlying P450-catalyzed reactions. Keywords: crystal plasticity, electrode calendering, stress of the current collector
Calendering is a crucial process in the manufacturing of lithium-ion battery electrodes. However, this process introduces several challenges to the current collector, including uneven stress distribution, stress concentration, and plastic pits, which ultimately impact electrode consistency and safety. It is important to note that the load exerted on the current collector during calendering cannot be determined solely through experimental means. Moreover, due to the extremely thin nature of the current collector, there is a size effect problem. To address these issues, this study establishes a lithium-ion battery cathode model based on real experimental data and conducts a numerical simulation of the calendering process. By obtaining the load applied to the current collector and incorporating it into the crystal plasticity model, we investigate the mechanical behavior of the current collector at the crystal level during calendering. The results demonstrate that the lithium battery catho... [more]

Keywords: health index, petrochemical plants, state evaluation, technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS)
Due to the involvement of hazardous materials and the potential serious accidents that may occur in petrochemical plants, it is of great significance to develop real-time state evaluation methods offering high performance. Data-driven methods have received widespread attention following the development of advanced condition-monitoring systems. However, scarce training samples evaluated under multiple operating conditions are available because of the high stability and reliability requirements of petrochemical plants. In this paper, a real-time state evaluation method based on the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is proposed, which circumvents dependence on data samples. First, the positive and negative ideal solutions of TOPSIS are determined using expert experience and the process index control limits of process cards. Then, fixed-value and fixed-interval indices are proposed to address the interval-optimal parameters. Subsequently, a new combine... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, filling line, fittings, parenteral products, shear stress
Fill-finish of parenteral formulations represents a crucial step in the pharmaceutical industry that necessitates careful monitoring of product stability down the line. Shear stress and interfacial stress are two elements that threaten product stability, the respective contributions of which are still up for debate. This article focuses on the analysis of shear stress in the sampling phase of the filling line. Specifically, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were employed to determine the shear stress distribution experienced by a protein-based parenteral drug as it passes through sampling fittings of various shapes under laminar and turbulent regime conditions. Rather than seeking the specific mechanism triggering the destabilization of a product, an attempt was made to analyze the fluid dynamics within these fittings and offer further understanding of the resulting shear stress. In addition, information was collected on the product path within the fittings, which allowed... [more]

Keywords: damage identification, generalized likelihood ratio test, minimum mean square error estimation, wind tunnel flexible plate
In this paper, we propose a damage identification method based on minimum mean square error estimation for a wind tunnel flexible plate condition monitoring system. Critical structural members of important equipment are large in size, and the measurement systems used to monitor their condition are often complex. The proposed damage identification method is based on the minimum mean squared error estimator and the generalized likelihood ratio test. It introduced activation function to generate the standard deviation of the data, which can then simulate the sensor output. A single sensor damage only affects a single dimension of the output data matrix of the measurement system. However, structural damage affects the output of multiple sensors. The damage identification method proposed in this paper can not only distinguish the sensor damage from the structure damage, but also locate the damaged sensor or structure damage location. This method can identify the measurement system output an... [more]

Keywords: bimetallic alloy, electrocatalysts, formic acid oxidation, fuel cell
Bimetallic Pd-based catalysts for formic acid oxidation (FAO) are one of the most promising anode materials for the next generation of direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFC). It is imperative to develop a simple strategy for preparing efficient, stable, and clean nanoparticle catalysts. Herein, we prepared a series of Pd, PdNi, and PdCo nanoparticle catalysts using the nanoparticle beam composite deposition system, which revealed good catalytic activity and stability in the process of FAO. The incorporation of Ni or Co prevents the adsorption of active intermediates and the accumulation of toxic intermediates in the process of FAO. Therefore, more Pd active centers can be used to decompose formic acid directly by dehydrogenation. The results indicate that PdNi-2 (Pd0.9Ni0.1) and PdCo-3 (Pd0.89Co0.11) catalysts exhibit the optimal catalytic performance, with the mass activity of 1491.5 A g−1Pd and 1401.7 A g−1Pd, respectively, which is 2.1 and 2 times that of the pure Pd sample.
