Analysis of Energy Saving Effect and Cost Efficiency of ECMs to Upgrade the Building Energy Code
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building energy code, energy conservation measure, energy saving ratio, investment cost
Building energy codes are key policy tools for improving building energy efficiency by defining the minimum requirement for the energy performance of new buildings. In Korea, the building energy code was focused on prescriptive criteria for a long time but is now gradually introducing performance criteria. However, switching to performance criteria is not straightforward because of the resistance of the market to abandoning the well-consolidated prescriptive criteria. The objective of this study is to derive appropriate measures to strengthen the prescriptive criteria and the performance criteria, considering both the energy-saving effect and the economic efficiency for new office buildings and educational buildings to increase the market acceptance of the building energy codes. To this end, the energy-saving effects of reference buildings resulting from the reinforcement of the prescriptive criteria in the past have been first analyzed. Then, based on the collected energy performance... [more]

Secure Operation of Integrated Natural Gas and Electricity Transmission Networks
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: contingency analysis, integrated natural gas and electricity transmission networks, N-1 criteria, separated and integrated methods
The interaction between natural gas and electricity networks is becoming more significant due to the projected large penetration of renewables into the energy system to meet the emission targets. This is due to the role of gas-fired plants in providing backup to renewables as the linkage between these networks. Therefore, this paper proposes a deterministic coordinated model for the secure and optimal operation of integrated natural gas and electricity transmission networks by taking into account the N-1 contingency analysis on both networks. In order to reduce the computational burden and time, an iterative algorithm is proposed to select the critical cases and neglect other contingencies, which do not have a significant impact on the energy system. The proposed integrated mixed-integer nonlinear programming operational model is evaluated and compared to another enhanced separated model on the IEEE 24-bus and 15-node gas test systems. The results emphasize the importance and effective... [more]

A Predictive Model for Coal Coking Based on Product Yield and Energy Balance
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal coking, coal pyrolysis, heat effect of pyrolysis, kinetics of pyrolysis, pyrolytic reactions
A series of experimental coal pyrolysis studies were conducted to define the parameters of a kinetic model to enable complete mass and energy balances by identifying basic process products. The developed model determines the chemical enthalpy of pyrolytic reactions, making it possible to determine the share of exothermic conversions in the coking process. To validate the model, a series of experimental pyrolysis tests of coking coals used in the coke plant and their blends were conducted, including TGA, retort, and industrial coke oven scale. Despite significant differences in the chemical composition of various coal types, element balancing allowed detection of the difference in product composition and the heat effects of the chemical conversion of such a complex substance as coal. Analysis of the heat effects of pyrolytic coal decomposition indicates substantial variability. In the first coking period, there are endothermic reactions; in the second, exothermic reactions occur. On Simplified Calculations of Leakage Inductances of Power Transformers
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 1D stray field analysis, discrete differential operator, energy-based approach, multi-winding transformers, self- and mutual leakage inductances
This paper deals with the problem of the leakage inductance calculations in power transformers. Commonly, the leakage flux in the air zone is represented by short-circuit inductance, which determines the short-circuit voltage, which is a very important factor for power transformers. That inductance is a good representation of the typical power transformer windings, but it is insufficient for multi-winding ones. This paper presents simple formulae for self- and mutual leakage inductance calculations for an arbitrary pair of windings. It follows from a simple 1D approach to analyzing the stray field using a discrete differential operator, and it was verified by the finite element method (FEM) calculation results.

Integrating Methods and Empirical Findings from Social and Behavioural Sciences into Energy System Models—Motivation and Possible Approaches
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy system modelling, energy transition, investment behaviour, local acceptance, social science, socio-political acceptance, system optimisation, technology genesis, user behaviour
The transformation of the energy system is a highly complex process involving many dimensions. Energy system models help to understand the process and to define either target systems or policy measures. Insights derived from the social sciences are not sufficiently represented in energy system models, but address crucial aspects of the transformation process. It is, therefore, necessary to develop approaches to integrate results from social science studies into energy system models. Hence, as a result of an interdisciplinary discourse among energy system modellers, social scientists, psychologists, economists and political scientists, this article explains which aspects should be considered in the models, how the respective results can be collected and which aspects of integration into energy system models are conceivable to provide an overview for other modellers. As a result of the discourse, five facets are examined: Investment behaviour (market acceptance), user behaviour, local ac... [more]

Hybrid Multimodule DC-DC Converters for Ultrafast Electric Vehicle Chargers
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cross feedback output current sharing, input-series input-parallel output-series output-parallel multimodule converter, reflex charging, ultra-fast chargers
To increase the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), significant efforts in terms of reducing the charging time are required. Consequently, ultrafast charging (UFC) stations require extensive investigation, particularly considering their higher power level requirements. Accordingly, this paper introduces a hybrid multimodule DC-DC converter-based dual-active bridge (DAB) topology for EV-UFC to achieve high-efficiency and high-power density. The hybrid concept is achieved through employing two different groups of multimodule converters. The first is designed to be in charge of a high fraction of the total required power, operating at a relatively low switching frequency, while the second is designed for a small fraction of the total power, operating at a relatively high switching frequency. To support the power converter controller design, a generalized small-signal model for the hybrid converter is studied. Also, cross feedback output current sharing (CFOCS) control for the hybrid inpu... [more]

An Air Terminal Device with a Changing Geometry to Improve Indoor Air Quality for VAV Ventilation Systems
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air terminal device geometry, indoor air quality, VAV ventilation systems
This study aimed to develop a new concept for an air terminal device for a VAV (variable air volume) ventilation system that would improve overall ventilation efficiency under a varying air supply volume. In VAV systems, air volume is modified according to the thermal load in each ventilated zone. However, lowering the airflow may cause a lack of proper air distribution and lead to the degradation of hygienic conditions. To combat this phenomenon, an air terminal device with an adapting geometry to stabilize the air throw, such that it remains constant despite the changing air volume supplied through the ventilation system, was designed and studied. Simulations that were performed using the RNG k−ε model in the ANSYS Fluent application were later validated on a laboratory stand. The results of the study show that, when using the newly proposed terminal device with an adaptive geometry, it is possible to stabilize the air throw. The thermal comfort parameters such as the PMV (predicted... [more]

Manufacturing 4.0 Operations Scheduling with AGV Battery Management Constraints
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: automated guided vehicles, battery management, energy optimization, job-shop scheduling, transport constraints
The industry 4.0 concepts are moving towards flexible and energy efficient factories. Major flexible production lines use battery-based automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to optimize their handling processes. However, optimal AGV battery management can significantly shorten lead times. In this paper, we address the scheduling problem in an AGV-based job-shop manufacturing facility. The considered schedule concerns three strands: jobs affecting machines, product transport tasks’ allocations and AGV fleet battery management. The proposed model supports outcomes expected from Industry 4.0 by increasing productivity through completion time minimization and optimizing energy by managing battery replenishment. Experimental tests were conducted on extended benchmark literature instances to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed approach.

A Novel Probabilistic Approach to Optimize Stand-Alone Hybrid Wind-Photovoltaic Renewable Energy System
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery capacity, hybrid wind-photovoltaic system, optimization model, probabilistic approach
In the present study, a novel probabilistic approach is proposed to optimize a stand-alone hybrid wind-photovoltaic renewable energy system installed in the South China Sea. In detail, the probability distribution of power generated from a hybrid wind-photovoltaic system is estimated based on the probabilistic descriptions of wind and solar energy resources in the South China Sea. In addition, the present study proposed a battery level coefficient model to calculate the battery capacity of the hybrid system. As the battery level coefficient implies the expected power deficit in a specific continuous duration, it reflects the reliability of the battery system and, hence, the performance of the system under the power deficit condition. Given the probabilistic models estimated the stability of power generations, a genetic algorithm is applied to optimize the sizes of the system components (the installed capacities of wind turbines and photovoltaic modules and the load) when the levelized... Online Rotor and Stator Resistance Estimation Based on Artificial Neural Network Applied in Sensorless Induction Motor Drive
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network (ANN), indirect field-oriented control (IFOC), rotor resistance estimation, sensorless control, stator resistance estimation
This paper presents a new approach method for online rotor and stator resistance estimation of induction motors using artificial neural networks for the sensorless drive. In this method, the rotor resistance is estimated by a feed-forward neural network with the learning rate as a function. The stator resistance is also estimated using the two-layered neural network with learning rate as a function. The speed of the induction motor is also estimated by the neural network. Therefore, the accurate estimation of the rotor and stator resistance improved the quality of the sensorless induction motor drive. The results of simulation and experiment show that the estimated speed tracks the real speed of the induction motor; simultaneously, the error between the estimated rotor and stator resistance using neural network and the normal rotor and stator resistance is very small.

Recovery Mechanisms for Cyclic (Huff-n-Puff) Gas Injection in Unconventional Reservoirs: A Quantitative Evaluation Using Numerical Simulation
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cyclic gas injection, EOR, huff-n-puff, numerical simulation, oil swelling, recovery mechanisms, unconventional, vaporization
Unconventional reservoirs produce large volumes of oil; however, recovery factors are low. While enhanced oil recovery (EOR) with cyclic gas injection can increase recovery factors in unconventional reservoirs, the mechanisms responsible for additional recovery are not well understood. We examined cyclic gas injection recovery mechanisms in unconventional reservoirs including oil swelling, viscosity reduction, vaporization, and pressure support using a numerical flow model as functions of reservoir fluid gas−oil ratio (GOR), and we conducted a sensitivity analysis of the mechanisms to reservoir properties and injection conditions. All mechanisms studied contributed to the additional recovery, but their significance varied with GOR. Pressure support provides a small response for all fluid types. Vaporization plays a role for all fluids but is most important for gas condensate reservoirs. Oil swelling impacts low-GOR oils but diminishes for higher-GOR oil. Viscosity reduction plays a min... Keywords: activated rice husk, few-layer graphene, nickel hydroxide, supercapacitor electrode
The renewable biomass material obtained from rice husk, a low-cost agricultural waste, was used as a precursor to synthesize a highly porous graphene-based carbon as electrode material for supercapacitors. Activated graphene-based carbon (AGC) was obtained by a two-step chemical procedure and exhibited a very high specific surface area (SSA) of 3292 m2 g−1. The surface morphology of the synthesized materials was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). Furthermore, the AGC was modified with nickel hydroxide Ni(OH)2 through a simple chemical precipitation method. It was found that the most significant increase in capacitance could be reached with Ni(OH)2 loadings of around 9 wt.%. The measured specific capacitance of the pure AGC supercapacitor electrodes was 236 F g−1, whereas electrodes from the material modified with 9 wt.% Ni(OH)2 showed a specific capacitance of up to 300 F g−1 at a current density of 50 mA g−1. Modeling Wind-Turbine Power Curves: Effects of Environmental Temperature on Wind Energy Generation
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: artificial neural networks, electricity generation, global warming, power curve, wind turbine
Global warming represents a serious challenge, which requires the adoption of renewable energy technologies worldwide. However, it can negatively affect the availability of renewable energy resources, such as wind, which are needed for electricity generation. In this context, there is an increasing need for more accurate evaluations of wind turbine power curves. A novel methodology to model the power curves of wind turbines, which combines the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) and Fuzzy logic rules, is proposed in this paper. This methodology assesses the role of environmental temperature in the power curve and the impact of temperature increases on wind energy production. The application of this methodology is illustrated with the simulation of the impact of global warming on the electricity generation of a wind farm. Due to the non-linear relationship between the power output of a turbine and its primary and derived parameters, it is shown that ANN combined with an expert syste... [more]

On the Influence of the Ammonium Nitrate(V) Provenance on Its Usefulness for the Manufacture of ANFO Type Explosives
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: ammonium nitrate (V), ANFO, morphology, TGA, thermal decomposition
Ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) samples based on fertilizer (AN-F) and ammonium nitrate porous prill (AN-PP) were studied. Tests were carried out using both a thermogravimetric analyzer and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC). Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopy analysis (SEM) of ammonium nitrate(V) (AN) concerning either their surface or cross-section was performed. Based on the SEM results, it was shown that the surface of AN-F grains was flat and slightly deformed, while the AN-PP surface was wrinkled and deformed. Furthermore, the various steps of thermogravimetric process exhibited continuous AN phase transition according to precise temperatures. From TGA analysis, a significant mass loss was found as a result of ANFO decomposition. Direct comparison of SEM and TGA/DCS data led to the conclusion that ANFO based on AN-F was characterized by lower absorption of FO in contrast to AN-PP.

A Discussion of Possible Approaches to the Integration of Thermochemical Storage Systems in Concentrating Solar Power Plants
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonates calcination, concentrated solar power plants, concentrated solar thermal plants, oxides carbonation, oxides decomposition, storage integration, thermochemical storage
One of the most interesting perspectives for the development of concentrated solar power (CSP) is the storage of solar energy on a seasonal basis, intending to exploit the summer solar radiation in excess and use it in the winter months, thus stabilizing the yearly production and increasing the capacity factor of the plant. By using materials subject to reversible chemical reactions, and thus storing the thermal energy in the form of chemical energy, thermochemical storage systems can potentially serve to this purpose. The present work focuses on the identification of possible integration solutions between CSP plants and thermochemical systems for long-term energy storage, particularly for high-temperature systems such as central receiver plants. The analysis is restricted to storage systems potentially compatible with temperatures ranging from 700 to 1000 °C and using gases as heat transfer fluids. New Sensorless Speed Control of a Hybrid Stepper Motor Based on Fuzzy Sliding Mode Observer
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy control, sensorless speed control, sliding mode observer, stepper motor
Stepper motors are widely used in industrial and consumer applications due to low-cost, high reliability, and open-loop control capability. Though open-loop features a simple structure, it bears low step resolution, high torque ripple, and low energy efficiency. To improve the performance without increasing hardware cost, a fuzzy sliding mode observer (SMO)-based new sensorless speed control structure is proposed. Unlike the conventional sensorless speed control, it does not use Park and inverse Park transformations to transform currents between a-b and d-q coordinates. Instead, it uses a new current transformation method to generate reference currents of stator windings, which not only reduces the calculation burden of the controller, but also improves the stability of the system. To reduce the chattering, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) embedded into the SMO is designed to adjust the observer gain adaptively, without using the conventional method that replaces the discontinuous sign f... Gini and Entropy-Based Spread Indexes for Primary Energy Consumption Efficiency and CO2 Emission
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon emissions, Coal, energy consumption, fossil fuels, generalized entropy index, Gini index, Natural Gas, non-fossil fuels, Petroleum, technology efficiency
Primary energy consumption is one of the key drivers of global CO2 emissions that, in turn, heavily depends on the efficiency of involved technologies. Either improvement in technology efficiency or the expansion of non-fossil fuel consumption requires large investments. The planning and financing of such investments by global policy makers or global energy firms require, in turn, reliable measures of associated global spread and their evolution in time, at least from the point of view of the principles for responsible investment (PRI). In this paper, our main contribution is the introduction of index measures for accessing global spread (that is, measures of inequality or inhomogeneity in the statistical distribution of a related quantity of interest) of technology efficiency and CO2 emission in primary energy consumption. These indexes are based on the Gini index, as used in economical sciences, and generalized entropy measures. Regarding primary energy sources, we consider petroleum... [more]

Keywords: carbon conversion, clean coal technology, gasifying agent, HNCERI, two-stage entrained-flow gasifier
In this paper, coal gasification characteristics in the reductor were investigated in a full-scale two-stage pressurized entrained-flow gasifier, which has been seldom conducted previously. The present study aimed at elucidating the effects of gasifying agent concentration, coal input rate, and operation period under full reductor load on the performance of a utility two-stage pressurized entrained-flow gasifier for the first time. When the steam input in the combustor was raised from 3318 kg/h to 5722 kg/h, the total outputs of H2, CO, and CO2 were increased by 1765 Nm3/h and 2063 Nm3/h, respectively, while the CH4 output was decreased by 49 Nm3/h. The coal conversion rate was minimal at low steam input. In addition, more coal gasified in the reductor could increase the output of CH4, while CH4 could reach 1.24% with the coal input in the range of 8000−10,000 kg/h. The present work can offer a further understanding of the gasification performance in the reductor of the full-scale two-... [more]

Keywords: combustion, emission, knock, temperature, water injection
A turbocharged downsizing spark ignition (SI) engine cooperating with an in-cylinder direct injection technology is one of the most effective ways to improve the power and economy of gasoline engines. However, engine knock has limited the application and development of the downsizing of gasoline engines. Water injection technology can effectively suppress the knock. In this study, a method of numerical simulation was used to explore the effect of the water injection temperature on the combustion and suppression of the knock. First of all, the knock of the gasoline engine was induced by advancing the spark timing. Then, when the other conditions were the same, different water injection temperatures were set. The results show that lowering the water injection temperature reduced the knock intensity in the cylinder, but increasing the water injection temperature made the water distribution more uniform, and the peak values of each monitoring point were more consistent.
