April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogeneration systems, DE-TOP program, hybrid desalination technologies, nuclear desalination, seawater desalination, small modular reactor (SMR), thermo-economic analysis
Small modular reactors (SMRs) represent a key area of interest to nuclear industry developers, which have been making significant progress during the past few years. Generally, these reactors are promising owing to their improved safety due to passive systems, enhanced containment efficiency, and fewer capital costs in comparison to traditional nuclear reactors. An important advantage of SMRs is their adaptability in being coupled to other energy-consuming systems, such as desalination plants (DPs) to create a cogeneration plant. Considering the serious challenges regarding the freshwater shortage in many regions of the world and the necessity of using low-carbon energy sources, it is advantageous to use SMR for supplying the required heat and electricity of DPs. As a high-performance desalination technology, the hybrid desalination (HD) systems can be exploited, which retain the advantages of both thermal and membrane desalination methods. In this study, several SMR coupling schemes t... [more]
A Novel Check-List Strategy to Evaluate the Potential of Operational Improvements in Wastewater Treatment Plants
Vojtěch Zejda, Vítězslav Máša, Šárka Václavková, Pavel Skryja
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency evaluation, methodology, overall efficiency, parameter analysis, Wastewater, WWTP
With increasing demands for cleaning and purification of water, wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) require their most efficient operation. The operators are thus obliged to constantly review the efficiency of the processing units and technological equipment of WWTPs and seek opportunities for improvements. To increase the efficiency of particular equipment, the important parameters to be used for the intensification must be correctly selected. A common WWTP consists of different types of processing units, where the basic parameters can be changed to achieve the highest efficiency (i.e., maximum output with minimum energy consumption) in the WWTP. However, due to many possible technologies in the wastewater treatment process, the combinations of processing units can be complex. In such cases, the efficiency assessment can be misleading if only basic parameters were accessed. Moreover, single-unit intensification can potentially improve the efficiency of the unit itself but cannot guaran... [more]
Effects of Porous Structure Development and Ash on the Steam Gasification Reactivity of Biochar Residues from a Commercial Gasifier at Different Temperatures
Saiman Ding, Efthymios Kantarelis, Klas Engvall
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ash effects, char reactivity, pore structure, steam gasification
The present study aims at investigating the effects of porous structure development and ash content on the observed reactivity during steam gasification of biochar residues from a commercial gasifier. The experiments were conducted at a temperature range of 700 to 800 °C using biochar, derived from entrained flow gasification of biomass, under isothermal conditions using a thermogravimetric analyzer. The pore size distribution, surface area and morphology of char samples were determined by N2 physiosorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the gasification temperature does not affect the porous structure development considerably. The total surface area of char exhibits a threefold increase, while the total pore volume increase ranges between 2.0 and 5.3 times, at all temperatures. Both properties are directly proportional to the observed reactivity, especially at conversions up to 70%. Catalytic effects of the mineral matter of the char (mainly potassium)... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle charging, electric vehicles, energy districts, forecasting, load shifting, peak shaving, photovoltaics, renewable energy sources, self-consumption, smart charging
In the context of electric vehicle (EV) development and positive energy districts with the growing penetration of non-programmable sources, this paper provides a method to predict and manage the aggregate power flows of charging stations to optimize the self-consumption and load profiles. The prediction method analyzes each charging event belonging to the EV population, and it considers the main factors that influence a charging process, namely the EV’s characteristics, charging ratings, and driver behavior. EV’s characteristics and charging ratings are obtained from the EV model’s and charging stations’ specifications, respectively. The statistical analysis of driver behavior is performed to calculate the daily consumptions and the charging energy request. Then, a model to estimate the parking time of each vehicle is extrapolated from the real collected data of the arrival and departure times in parking lots. A case study was carried out to evaluate the proposed method. This consisted... [more]

Jianping Wang, Shiguang Xiao, Tao Song, Junqi Yue, Pingyan Bian, Yu Li
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Bresenham’s algorithm, discriminate regions, integer discriminants, spatial straight line
A novelty algorithm of spatial straight-line drawing based on a method of discriminate regions is proposed in this paper based on Bresenham’s algorithm. Three-dimensional space is divided into innumerable three-dimensional meshes according to the given rule; the distance between the start and the end points of the three coordinates is Δx, Δy, and Δz, respectively; the distribution types of spatial straight line and the position of the end point are determined by judging the relationship among Δx, Δy, and Δz; then, the active-passive directions can be determined. The plane of the ending point of the straight line in a three-dimensional mesh is divided into four regions; then, the discriminant is obtained; and this discriminant determine which region the point is located in The algorithm is verified and analyzed by the method of contrastive analysis; the results show that: the error of the algorithm is related to the step length L; the maximum theoretical error is 0.7071*L. The discrimin... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Antithamnion plumula, barley straw, biogas, Catalysis, cost-benefits analysis, green ZnO nanoparticles, kinetic models, levelized cost of energy
The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on the biogas production from mechanically treated barley straw and to perform a techno-economic analysis based on the costs assessment and on the results of biogas production. The structural changes of mechanically pretreated barley straw were observed using FTIR, XRD, TGA, and SEM. Additionally, both green ZnO NPs prepared from red alga (Antithamnion plumula) extract and chemically prepared ZnO NPs were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TEM, surface area, and EDX. The results revealed that the biogas production was slightly improved by 14.9 and 13.2% when the barley straw of 0.4 mm was mechanically pretreated with 10 mg/L of both green and chemical ZnO NPs and produced 390.5 mL biogas/g VS and 385 mL biogas/g VS, respectively. On the other hand, the higher concentrations of ZnO NPs equal to 20 mg/L had an inhibitory effect on biogas production and decreased the biogas yield to 173 mL biogas/g VS, which... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CMK-8, functional materials, lithium-ion batteries (LIB), nitrogen doping, ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC)
Designing carbonaceous materials with heightened attention to the structural properties such as porosity, and to the functionalization of the surface, is a growing topic in the lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) field. Using a mesoporous silica KIT-6 hard template, mesoporous carbons belonging to the OMCs (ordered mesoporous carbons) family, namely 3D cubic CMK-8 and N-CMK-8 were synthesized and thoroughly structurally characterized. XPS analysis confirmed the successful introduction of nitrogen, highlighting the nature of the different nitrogen atoms incorporated in the structure. The work aims at evaluating the electrochemical performance of N-doped ordered mesoporous carbons as an anode in LIBs, underlining the effect of the nitrogen functionalization. The N-CMK-8 electrode reveals higher reversible capacity, better cycling stability, and rate capability, as compared to the CMK-8 electrode. Coupling the 3D channel network with the functional N-doping increased the reversible capacity to ~... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: film cooling, gas turbine, swirling flow
The presence of injectors with strongly swirled flows, used to promote flame stability in the combustion chambers of gas turbines, influences the behaviour of the effusion cooling jets and consequently of the liner’s cooling capabilities. For this reason, unsteady behaviour of the jets in the presence of swirling flow requires a characterization by means of experimental flow field analyses. The experimental setup of this work consists of a non-reactive single-sector linear combustor test rig, scaled up with respect to the real engine geometry to increase spatial resolution and to reduce the frequencies of the unsteadiness. It is equipped with a radial swirler and multi-perforated effusion plates to simulate the liner cooling system. Two effusion plates were tested and compared: with cylindrical and with laid-back fan-shaped 7-7-7 holes in staggered arrangement. Time resolved Particle Image Velocimetry has been carried out: the unsteady characteristics of the jets, promoted by the inter... [more]
Numerical Investigations on the Propagation of Fire in a Railway Carriage
Matthew Craig, Taimoor Asim
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), fire dynamics, smoke distribution, thermal plume
In this study, advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-based numerical simulations have been performed in order to analyse fire propagation in a standard railway compartment. A Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) has been employed to mimic real world scenarios associated with fire propagation within railway carriages in order to develop safety guidelines for railway passengers. Comprehensive parametric investigations on the effects of ignition location, intensity and cabin upholstery have been carried out. It has been observed that a fire occurring near the exits of the carriage results in a lower smoke layer height, due to the local carriage geometry, than an identical fire igniting at the center of the carriage. This in turn causes the smoke density along the aisleway to vary by around 30%. Reducing the ignition energy by half has been found to restrict combustion, thus reducing smoke density and carbon exhaust gases, reducing the average temperature from 170 °C to 110 °C. Changing the... [more]
Jump Linear Quadratic Control for Microgrids with Commercial Loads
Maryam Khanbaghi, Aleksandar Zecevic
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy management, jump linear quadratic control, Markov chain, microgrids, stochastic hybrid systems, Stochastic Optimization
Due to the aging power-grid infrastructure and increased usage of renewable energies, microgrids (μGrids) have emerged as a promising paradigm. It is reasonable to expect that they will become one of the fundamental building blocks of a smart grid, since effective energy transfer and coordination of μGrids could help maintain the stability and reliability of the regional large-scale power-grid. From the control perspective, one of the key objectives of μGrids is load management using local generation and storage for optimized performance. Accomplishing this task can be challenging, however, particularly in situations where local generation is unpredictable both in quality and in availability. This paper proposes to address that problem by developing a new optimal energy management scheme, which meets the requirements of supply and demand. The method that will be described in the following models μGrids as a stochastic hybrid dynamic system. Jump linear theory is used to maximize storag... [more]

Keywords: energy production, finite element analysis, floating photovoltaic power generation structure, new and renewable energy, safety
Countries around the world are expanding their investment in the new and renewable energy industry for strengthening energy security, improving air pollution, responding to climate change, and tackling energy poverty. In Korea, with the nuclear phase-out declaration in 2017, the government has announced a policy to expand the ratio of new and renewable energy from 4.7% to 20% by 2030. This study examines a floating photovoltaic power generation system, which is a new and renewable energy source. A structure composed of high-durability steel with excellent corrosion resistance and durability was designed for constructing and installing a 500-kW-class floating photovoltaic power generation structure. In addition, the safety of the structure was verified through finite element analysis. By reviewing the safety of the structure with respect to the wave height, the behavior of the structure was confirmed through the design wave height formula proposed in the domestic standard. Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Germany, industrial transitions, sectoral innovation systems, system failures, systems of innovation, United Kingdom
Industrial processes are associated with high amounts of energy consumed and greenhouse gases emitted, stressing the urgent need for low-carbon sectoral transitions. This research reviews the energy-intensive iron and steel, cement and chemicals industries of Germany and the United Kingdom, two major emitting countries with significant activity, yet with different recent orientation. Our socio-technical analysis, based on the Sectoral Innovation Systems and the Systems Failure framework, aims to capture existing and potential drivers of or barriers to diffusion of sustainable industrial technologies and extract implications for policy. Results indicate that actor structures and inconsistent policies have limited low-carbon innovation. A critical factor for the successful decarbonisation of German industry lies in overcoming lobbying and resistance to technological innovation caused by strong networks. By contrast, a key to UK industrial decarbonisation is to drive innovation and invest... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ART, multiple chargers, overshoot, set point modulation, supercapacitor
Autonomous rail transit (ART) vehicle is a new type of urban rail transportation, which has good development prospects. It is powered by onboard supercapacitors, which are charged at midway stations. It requires short charging time and fast charging speed. Usually, multiple chargers are used in parallel for charging. However, this will cause an overshoot phenomenon during charging, and the overshoot of multiple chargers will be superimposed on the supercapacitor, affecting the stability and life of both supercapacitors and chargers. In this paper, we propose a predictive set point modulation charging method, which can reduce the system’s overshoot and increase the reliability of the system. First, the state-space averaging method is used to establish the electronic physical model of the multicharger system. Secondly, a predictive set point modulation charging control method is designed, and the closed-loop model of the proposed charging system is developed using the buck diagram. The e... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: axial flux induction motor, finite element analysis, performance evaluation
In recent years, with developing technology in the field of electrical machines, more efficient and high power density electric motors have been produced. The use of high energy efficiency motors gains importance due to the increase in global energy demand. The main purpose of this study was to design an Axial Flux Induction Motor (AFIM) with the same efficiency class as the Radial Flux Induction Motor (RFIM) in premium efficiency (IE3) class which is used commonly in industrial applications. Various AFIMs are designed with different rotor slot numbers and performance analyses as efficiency and torque ripple changes are investigated. It is known that torque ripple is one of the key parameters in electrical machine design which should be kept as low as possible without decreasing efficiency and torque. Accordingly, AFIMs’ rotor slots are skewed considering the stator and rotor slot numbers. The use of a Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC) material in design is also investigated. As a result... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery cooling, control strategy, driving profile, electric buses, system identification
Previous research identified that battery temperature control is critical to the safety, lifetime, and performance of electric vehicles. In this paper, the liquid-based battery temperature control of electric buses is investigated subject to heat transfer behavior and control strategy. Therefore, a new transient calculation method is proposed to simulate the thermal behavior of a coolant-cooled battery system. The method is based on the system identification technique and combines the advantage of low computational effort and high accuracy. In detail, four transfer functions are extracted by a thermo-hydraulic 3D simulation model comprising 12 prismatic lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) cells, housing, arrestors, and a cooling plate. The transfer functions describe the relationship between heat generation, cell temperature, and coolant temperature. A vehicle model calculates the power consumption of an electric bus and thus provides the input for the transient calculation. Fu... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: localization, magnetic gradient tensor, radial horizontal jet drilling
To obtain the real-time drilling trajectory of radial horizontal jet drilling (RHJD), a magnetized nozzle localization method based on magnetic gradient tensor (MGT) is proposed. The MGT system consisting of five tri-axial magnetometers, a tri-axial accelerometer, and a tri-axial gyroscope are installed in the casing. The magnetized nozzle is made of a strong magnetic permanent magnet whose position can be obtained by measuring the MGT generated by itself at the measurement point. The simulation and experiment of the localization method are carried out, which show that the method has high accuracy. When the detection distance is 40 m, the error is only 0.07 m, which meets the requirements of engineering practice. The accuracy of the magnetometer, the baseline distance and the magnetization strength of the nozzle are the main factors affecting the localization error. This localization method can meet the requirements of positioning accuracy in practical engineering, which greatly avoids... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD-DEM coupling method, particle features and behaviors, single-channel pump, solid-liquid two-phase flows
Since various foreign bodies can cause clogging and wear in single-channel pumps, considerable attention has been focused on the numerical study of solid-liquid flows in the single-channel pump. However, conventional numerical simulation cannot responsibly assess the significant effect of the particle material properties, inter-particle collision, and size on the pump. In consideration of the particle features and behaviors, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-Discrete Element Method (DEM) coupling method was applied for the first time to simulate the solid-liquid flows in a single-channel pump. The results showed that the smaller particles possessed a wider velocity distribution range and velocity peak, while the larger particles exerted a greater contact force. Additionally, the pie-shaped particles had the most severe collisions, and spherical particles had the least in total. Furthermore, the hub and shroud wall suffered a minor contact force, but the blade and volute wall both... [more]
Thermal Viscous Fingering in Thermal Recovery Processes

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer, Oil Sands, steam chambers, thermal recovery, viscous fingering
Heat and fluid flow at the edge of steam chambers found in thermal recovery processes such as steam-assisted gravity drainage and cyclic steam stimulation remain unresolved. Given the multiple phases present and contrast of thermophysical properties, it remains unclear where instabilities occur within this thin, yet critical, zone of the process. In the research reported here, heat and fluid flow are examined in vertical and horizontal sections of a steam chamber to understand the differences between the two orientations by using detailed and fine-gridded thermal reservoir simulation models. The results show that heat transfer in vertical and horizontal directions are different with greater heat transfer found in the vertical orientation. In the vertical direction, heat transfer occurs with mobilized bitumen draining with subsequent steam moving into the emptied pore space. Conduction beyond the edge of the chamber dominates and heated, low viscosity bitumen fingers into cold, higher v... [more]
Decomposed Iterative Optimal Power Flow with Automatic Regionalization

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automatic regionalization, decomposed iterative algorithm, optimal power flow
The optimal power flow (OPF) problem plays an important role in power system operation and control. The problem is nonconvex and NP-hard, hence global optimality is not guaranteed and the complexity grows exponentially with the size of the system. Therefore, centralized optimization techniques are not suitable for large-scale systems and an efficient decomposed implementation of OPF is highly demanded. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient method to decompose the entire system into multiple sub-systems based on automatic regionalization and acquire the OPF solution across sub-systems via a modified MATPOWER solver. The proposed method is implemented in a modified solver and tested on several IEEE Power System Test Cases. The performance is shown to be more appealing compared with the original solver.

Keywords: fuelwood, harvesting residues, renewable energy sources, slash for fuel, woody biomass
Forest biomass is and will remain a primary source of renewable energy in many EU countries in the coming years. The aim of this study was to determine the energy potential of forest biomass on a regional scale with regard to the needs of its inhabitants in terms of electricity and heat consumption. The study was carried out in south-eastern Poland. Energy potential was calculated based on the determined wood mass and calorific value of wood. The current level of forest biomass acquisition satisfies 4.2% of the needs of the local market in terms of electricity and heat consumption. Taking into account high forest cover of the region (40%), the 60% annual increment of total harvesting, and obtaining biomass at the level of 30% of the total harvesting, waste wood from the forest can meet 58.1% of the needs of the local market in terms of electricity consumption and 14.4% of the need for thermal energy consumption. There is a certain niche in the fuel wood market that is currently unused,... [more]
A Novel Data-Energy Management Algorithm for Smart Transformers to Optimize the Total Load Demand in Smart Homes

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand response, distribution system, energy management, Optimization, smart home, smart transformer
The increased integration of Electric Vehicles (EVs) into the distribution network can create severe issues—especially when demand response programs and time-varying electricity prices are applied, EVs tend to charge during the off-peak time to minimize the electricity cost. Hence, another peak demand might be created, and other solutions are required. Many researchers tried to solve the problem; however, limitations exist because of the decentralized topology of the network. The system operator is not allowed to control the end-users’ load due to security and privacy issues. To overcome this situation, we propose a novel data-energy management algorithm on the transformer’s level that controls the power demand profiles of the householders and exchange energy between them without violating their privacy and security. Our method is compared to an existing one in the literature based on a decentralized control strategy. Simulations show that our approach has reduced the electricity cost... [more]

Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), wind energy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rotor blade, tip vortices, winglet
Wind energy is one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources, and the most developed energy extraction device that harnesses this energy is the Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT). Increasing the efficiency of HAWTs is one important topic in current research with multiple aspects to look at such as blade design and rotor array optimization. This study looked at the effect of wingtip devices, a split winglet, in particular, to reduce the drag induced by the wind vortices at the blade tip, hence increasing performance. Split winglet implementation was done using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) on the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) Phase VI sequence H. In total, there are four (4) blade configurations that are simulated, the base NREL Phase VI sequence H blade, an extended version of the previous blade to equalize length of the blades, the base blade with a winglet and the base blade with split winglet. Results at wind speeds of 7 m/s to 15 m/s show that adding a winglet in... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy consumption, financial development, nonlinear econometric method, spatial econometric method, sustainable development
Energy consumption is of great significance to the sustainable development of the economy. Due to the spatial heterogeneity of low-carbon growth in regional economies, the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth is complicated. However, a few researches have been published about spatial spillover effects and non-linearity of energy consumption and financial development on regional economic growth in China. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2007 to 2017, this paper analyzes the spatial spillover effects and threshold effects of energy consumption and financial development on regional economic growth by using spatial and nonlinear econometric methods. The main conclusions are as follows. Spatial econometric methods show that financial development and energy consumption are two factors of production input to promote China’s economic growth. Meanwhile, energy consumption and financial development have spillover effects on regional economic growth. Ad... [more]
