April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: IoT sensors, Lora parser, LoRaWAN/Sigfox gateway, multi-agent system (MAS), parallel management, smart parking
Smart Parking is essential for any future smart cities due to the tremendous growth of the car fleet. Such infrastructures require a certain amount of equipment. Indeed, smart parking integrates a lot of actors, to manage the parking its equipment must be managed accordingly. Here, is proposed a distributed architecture to manage them by collecting efficiently their data. Two types of data relating to the parking must be collected: those coming from the deployed equipment in the parking and those coming from the internet due to remote users. Thus, a system of two main servers based on the multi-agent concept is proposed. This system manages the parking platform. The first server is dedicated to the parking equipment data collection (Processing Server−PS). The second server (Processing Web Server−PWS) collects the users’ online data such as reservation, and it is responsible for pricing policies, and receive post-processed data from the Processing Server. The parking equipment integrate... [more]
Evaluation of Inoculated Waste Biological Stabilization Degree by Olfactometric Methods
Mirosław Szyłak-Szydłowski
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biostabilization, mechanical biological treatment, odor, olfactometry
As a result of compounds’ transformation in the waste biostabilization phases, there is an increase in odor nuisance and health problems among people exposed to odorants. Linking the odor concentration to the degree of waste biostabilization may be an important tool for the assessment of individual technological variants of biostabilization. The study aimed to link the odor emissions to the biostabilization degree in individual process variants that differed in the inoculum. The tests were carried out on inoculated windrows on the waste mechanical-bological treatment open site. Odor concentrations were measured during the entire seven-week process of biostabilization (weeks 1−7) and compared with kinetics parameters of organic compounds’ decomposition. The olfactometric tests showed the necessity of using the preparation to reduce the value of odor concentration. Research proved that the decrease of odor concentration values could be useful to indicate the particular phases of biostabi... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: biohydrogen, environmental biotechnology, Fermentation, green energy, liquid food waste, solid food waste
The constant increase in the amount of food waste accumulating in landfills and discharged into the water reservoirs causes environment pollution and threatens human health. Solid and liquid food wastes include fruit, vegetable, and meat residues, alcohol bard, and sewage from various food enterprises. These products contain high concentrations of biodegradable organic compounds and represent an inexpensive and renewable substrate for the hydrogen fermentation. The goal of the work was to study the efficiency of hydrogen obtaining and decomposition of solid and liquid food waste via fermentation by granular microbial preparation (GMP). The application of GMP improved the efficiency of the dark fermentation of food waste. Hydrogen yields reached 102 L/kg of solid waste and 2.3 L/L of liquid waste. The fermentation resulted in the 91-fold reduction in the weight of the solid waste, while the concentration of organics in the liquid waste decreased 3-fold. Our results demonstrated the pote... Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: analysis of variance, Energy Efficiency, energy poverty, energy supply, financial risk, household, tax
The purpose of the study is to assess the level of energy supply to the population of the Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asian (EECCA) countries, taking into account their financial risk and energy efficiency for households as potential socially vulnerable consumers. The research methodology is based on three approaches to determining the energy poverty of the population, as well as the integral index of energy supply to socially vulnerable segments of the population. Based on the results of the three approaches to assessing the level of energy supply to the population of EECCA countries, it has been revealed that its critical indicators are found in Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Ukraine. The multivariate analysis of variance has revealed that, in all EECCA countries, both financial risk and energy efficiency levels have a significant impact. In Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia, financial risk has the greatest impact on the level of energ... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: auto-rickshaw, backward-facing model, dynamic programming, energy management strategy, forward-facing model, fuel economy, hybrid electric vehicle, multi-objective optimization, rule-based control
Millions of three-wheelers in large cities of Asia and Africa contribute to the already increasing urban air pollutants. An emerging method to reduce adverse effects of the growing three-wheeler fleet is hybrid-electric technology. The overall efficiency of a hybrid electric vehicle heavily depends on the power management strategy used in controlling the main powertrain components of the vehicle. Recent studies highlight the need for a comprehensive report on developing an easy-to-implement and efficient control strategy for hybrid electric three-wheelers. Thus, in the present study, a design methodology for a rule-based supervisory controller of a pre-transmission parallel hybrid three-wheeler based on an optimal control strategy (i.e., dynamic programming) is proposed. The optimal control problem for minimizing fuel, emissions (i.e., HC, CO and NOx) and gear shift frequency are solved using dynamic programming (DP). Numerical issues of DP are analyzed and trade-offs between optimizin... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: FEM, flow boiling, heat transfer coefficient, mini-channel, Picard method, time-dependent, Trefftz functions
The intensification of heat transfer using two-phase boiling flow in mini-channels is widely used to dissipate the high heat fluxes in miniaturized electronic devices. However, the process itself is not fully recognized and still requires experimental studies and developing computation methods appropriate for them. The main aim of this work was the mathematical modeling of time-dependent heat transfer process in FC-72 flow boiling in a mini-channel heat sink with five parallel mini-channels of 1 mm depth. Channels have an asymmetrically heated wall while its outer temperature was measured by infrared thermography. The opposite wall of the mini-channels was transparent, helping to record flow patterns due to a high-speed digital camera. The objective of the numerical calculations was to determine the heat transfer coefficient on the wall-fluid contact surface from the Robin boundary condition. The problem was solved using methods based on the Trefftz-type functions. Three mathematical m... [more]
One-Cycle Control of Three-Phase Five-Level Diode-Clamped STATCOM
In Wha Jeong, Tae Hyun Sung
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dc-link voltage balance, one-cycle control, reactive power compensation, static VAR compensator
This paper presents a new multilevel one-cycle control (OCC) technique for a five-level diode-clamped multilevel converter (DCMC)-based static VAR compensator (STATCOM). The OCC algorithm in combination with multi-carrier level-shifted PWM control is used in the proposed five-level DCMC-based STATCOM. The automatic dc link voltage balance is simply realized by four voltage compensators presented as the part of the OCC controller. In this paper the OCC principle of a two-level converter-based STATCOM is reviewed and extended to the five-level DCMC-based STATCOM. The proposed multilevel OCC control method of the five-level DCMC-based STATCOM in steady-state and dynamic operation modes is verified by simulation and experimental results.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: flux distribution, optical modelling, radiation homogenizer, ray tracing simulations, solar furnace optimization
Solar radiation homogenizers are multi-mirror devices that try to reshape the solar radiation distribution coming from a concentrator, so that, after passing through the homogenizer, the light flux becomes as much evenly distributed as possible. The optical behavior of these multi-reflective devices is complex and still ill-understood. The geometry of the concentrator defines the features of the concentrated flux and then the characteristics of a particular homogenizer must be chosen according to the envisaged use. In this work, we developed and used optical ray-tracing software to investigate how the homogenizer’s optical output is affected by the following homogenizer’s characteristics: (i) Number of reflecting surfaces; (ii) total length; (iii) position (relative to focal plane); and (iv) tilt angle (inclination) of reflecting surfaces. The obtained results provide valuable information for the use of these optical devices and may contribute to the development of more efficient strat... [more]

Keywords: distorted voltage, Finite Set Position, harmonics components, Model Predictive Control, One-Cycle Fourier filter, PLL
This work introduces a new method for computing the angular position of the voltage of the grid—based on a finite set of angles—in the condition of failures in the distribution systems, as symmetrical and asymmetric voltage sags, unbalance, harmonic distortions, and frequency changes. This method is inspired in the model predictive control finite control set principles. In this way, the proposal employs the One-Cycle Fourier filter (OCF) to estimate the positive sequence of the voltage vector into the stationary αβ-frame. The positive sequence voltages extracted from this filter is then handled by an algorithm that is implemented by a finite position set (FPS) for estimating the phase angle. In this way, the minimized cost function chooses the optimal angular position while using the predicted behavior of the grid voltage vector elements in dq frame. The structure, called One-Cycle Fourier Finite position Set Phase Locked Loop (OCF-FS-PLL), here is a composition of the OCF and the FPS.... [more]
Co-Design of CVT-Based Electric Vehicles

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-design, component sizing, continuously variable transmission, convex programming, electric vehicle, Energy Efficiency, optimal control
For an electric vehicle (EV) with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), a novel convex programming (CP)-based co-design method is proposed to minimize the total-cost-of-ownership (TCO). The integration of the electric machine (EM) and the CVT is the primary focus. The optimized system with co-design reduces the TCO by around 5.9% compared to a non-optimized CVT-based EV (based on off-the-shelf components) and by around 2% compared to the EV equipped with a single-speed transmission (SST). By taking advantage of the control and design freedom provided by the CVT, the optimal CVT, EM and battery sizes are found to reduce the system cost. It simultaneously finds the optimal CVT speed ratio and air-flow rate of the cooling system reducing the energy consumption. The strength of co-design is highlighted by comparing to a sequential design, and insights into the design of a low-power EV that is energy-efficient and cost-effective for urban driving are provided. A highly integrated EM-C... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy harvesting, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), Optimization, switching converter, wind energy
Sensor nodes have been assigned a lot of tasks in a connected environment that is growing rapidly. The power supply remains a challenge that is not answered convincingly. Energy harvesting is an emerging solution that is being studied to integrate in low power applications such as internet of things (IoT) and wireless sensor networks (WSN). In this work an interface circuit for a novel fluttering wind energy harvester is presented. The system consists of a switching converter controlled by a low power microcontroller. Optimization techniques on the hardware and software level have been implemented, and a prototype is developed for testing. Experiments have been done with generated input signals resulting in up to 67% efficiency for a constant voltage input. Other experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel that showed a transient output that is compatible with the target applications.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bankruptcy of the household, decision-making, economics of family, finance, financial energy, financial health, forecasting, insolvency of consumers, Polish households, Taiwanese households
This paper examines the usefulness of statistical methods in forecasting the financial energy of households. The study’s objective is to create the innovative ratios that combine both financial and demographic information of households and implement them in the forecasting models. To conduct this objective, six forecasting models are developed using three different methods—discriminant analysis, logit analysis, and decision trees separately for households in Poland and Taiwan. Such a research approach will answer the question whether the implementation of constructed ratios can increase effectiveness of the forecasting model and its’ versatility between different economic regions. The research relies on four samples of households—two learning samples and two testing samples (one for each country) consisting of 2400 households from both countries. This study is one of the first attempts in the literature globally to develop forecasting models based on ratios constructed with a combinati... [more]

Keywords: demand response, multi-agents, ramp period, real-time simulation, smart grids
This paper presents MARTINE (Multi-Agent based Real-Time INfrastruture for Energy), a simulation, emulation and energy management platform for the study of problems related to buildings and smart grids. Relevant advances related to buildings and smart grid management and operation have been proposed, focusing either on software models for decision support or on physical infrastructure and control approaches. These two perspectives are, however, complementary, and no practical assessment can be achieved without a suitable interaction and analysis of the impact that decision-making models have on physical resources, and vice-versa. MARTINE overcomes this limitation by integrating, in a single platform: real buildings with the associated devices and resources; emulated components that complement the ones present in the buildings; simulated resources, players and buildings using multi-agent systems, real-time simulation with hardware in the loop capabilities, which enables integrating virt... Keywords: automatically controlled pressure regulator, Energy Efficiency, energy savings, flexible production systems, product mix
During pneumatic control system design, the critical value for choosing the appropriate pneumatic actuator is the weight of the workpiece. In the case of flexible production systems, which are the core part of the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) concept, the weight of the workpieces is often variable, since the crucial feature of this kind of production is its ability to deal with variable parts. Therefore, in order to deal with the variable weight of parts, a pneumatic actuator is chosen according to the heaviest part. However, according to another I4.0 principle, energy efficient operation of machines, the previous criteria for choosing a pneumatic actuator is energy efficient only when handling the heaviest part. In all other cases, operation of the pneumatic actuator is suboptimal in terms of energy efficiency. Aiming to solve this problem, this paper considers the possibility of using a new pressure regulator instead of traditional manually adjusted pressure regulators. This regulator provide... [more]

Keywords: microgrid, parameter tuning, Virtual Oscillator Control, voltage-mode inverter
Virtual Oscillator Control (VOC) is a promising technique that allows several inverters connected to a microgrid to naturally synchronize, without communication. However, the selection of the VOC parameters often require iterative or optimization procedures that render its practical use not straightforward. In this paper, this problem is overcome with the proposition of a novel methodology for determining the dead-zone type VOC parameters based on the describing function method. The methodology consists of a set of analytical equations that use as input data few basic electrical system parameters from the converter and from the microgrid, namely, the operating voltage and frequency ranges, besides rated power. The proposed set of equations is used to calculate the parameters required to control an inverter in voltage mode. The validity of the proposed approach is demonstrated in experiments that encompass different situations such as pre-synchronization, connection, and disconnection o... [more]

Keywords: biofuel, microalgae, microfluidic, UV mutagenesis
Microalgae are important green energy resources. With high efficiency in fixing carbon dioxide, microalgae are broadly applied for biofuel production. Integrating various cultivation parameters, we applied ultraviolet (UV) mutagenesis, one of the most common approaches, to induce genomic mutation in microalgae and thus enhance the production of lipid content, but the screening process is convoluted and labor-intensive. In this study, we aimed to develop an accessible microfluidic platform to optimize the biofuel production of microalgae. Instead of traditional lithography, we designed hanging-drop microfluidic chips that were fabricated using a cheap computer numerical control (CNC) micro-milling technique. On each chip, we cultured in parallel Botryococcus braunii, one of the most common freshwater microalgae for biofuel production, in sets of ten separated hanging drops (~30 µL each); we monitored their growth in each individual drop for more than 14 days. To optimize the culturing c... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined heating, energy saving technology, heat pump, solar energy
Three connection methods for the combined heating systems of a closed-type heat-source tower heat pump (CHTHP) and solar collector (SC) were proposed in this paper: the heat-source tower (HST) and solar collector were connected in series (HST+SC), and the solar collector and heat pump (HP) condenser were connected in series (SC+HP) and in parallel (SC//HP). The calculation module of the closed heat-source tower was built using programming software based on C++ language, and three corresponding calculation models of the combined heating systems were established in the TRNSYS. Under the climatic conditions of the cold season in Changsha, the combined heating performance of the three systems was simulated and analyzed. The results indicate that the simulation results of the established models are in good agreement with the test results, and the simulation results can be used for the research of the system’s combined heating performance. April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asymmetrical supply, balancing compensation, currents’ physical components (CPC) theory, hybrid power filters, nonsinusoidal waveforms, unbalanced load
The article presents the possibility of using the currents’ physical components (CPC) theory to generate the reference current of the active power filter (APF). The solution proposed by the authors is based on the cooperation of minimizing balancing compensators (MBC), which, due to their use in 4-wire systems, have been divided into two structures. The first compensator, which purpose is to minimize and balance the reactive current and the unbalanced current of the zero sequence, is built in the star system (STAR-MBC). The purpose of the second compensator, which operation occurs in the delta system (DELTA-MBC), is to minimize and balance the other two components, i.e., the unbalanced current of the negative sequence and the unbalanced current of the positive sequence. The two structures cooperating with each other significantly reduce the currents associated with the reactive elements, i.e., reactive current, and the unbalanced current. As mentioned, these currents are reduced but no... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: centralized photovoltaic, grid parity, industry life cycle, learning curve
The cost of centralized photovoltaic (CPV) power generation has been decreasing rapidly in China. However, the achievement of grid parity is full of uncertainties due to changes in policies and the industry environment. In order to explore the time, price, and external conditions in which grid parity can be achieved, we create the improved grey GM (1, 1) model to estimate the installed capacity over the next 10 years, and apply a learning curve to predict the cost of CPV generation. In the analysis of grid parity, we compare the benchmark price of coal power and the price under the market-oriented mechanism with CPV. The results show that China’s CPV industry will enter the early stage of maturity from 2020 onwards; with the help of benchmark investment, the grid parity of CPV may be achieved in 2022 at the earliest and 2025 at the latest. After 2025, the photovoltaic electricity price will be generally lower than the coal electricity price under marketization. By 2030, CPV power gener... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ensemble techniques, features extraction, features selection, Machine Learning, oil assessment, physicochemical tests, random forest, transformer oil
Machine learning is widely used as a panacea in many engineering applications including the condition assessment of power transformers. Most statistics attribute the main cause of transformer failure to insulation degradation. Thus, a new, simple, and effective machine-learning approach was proposed to monitor the condition of transformer oils based on some aging indicators. The proposed approach was used to compare the performance of two machine-learning classifiers: J48 decision tree and random forest. The service-aged transformer oils were classified into four groups: the oils that can be maintained in service, the oils that should be reconditioned or filtered, the oils that should be reclaimed, and the oils that must be discarded. From the two algorithms, random forest exhibited a better performance and high accuracy with only a small amount of data. Good performance was achieved through not only the application of the proposed algorithm but also the approach of data preprocessing.... [more]

This study proposes the time-varying nonlinear panel unit root test to investigate the convergence of ecological foot prints between the EU and candidate countries. Sixteen European countries (such as Albania, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Turkey) and analysis periods are selected according to data availability. This study proposes a cross-sectional Panel KSS with Fourier to test the convergence of the ecological footprints. Then, we combine this methodology with the rolling window method to take into account the time-varying stationarity of series. This study evaluated sub-components of ecological footprints separately and provided more comprehensive findings for the ecological footprint. According to empirical findings, this study proves that convergence or divergence does not show continuity over time. On the other side, this study points out the presence of divergence draws attention... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diesel generator, isolated microgrid, power quality, power system simulation, power system stability, wind turbine generator
Wind diesel isolated microgrids (WDIMs) combine wind turbine generators (WTGs) with diesel generators (DGs) to supply electricity to remote consumers. WDIMs are low-inertia isolated power systems where large system frequency and voltage variations occur. WDIM dynamic modeling allows short-term simulations to be performed and detailed electrical variable transients to be obtained so that the WDIM power quality and stability can be tested. This paper presents a literature review about WDIM dynamic simulation. The review classifies articles according to factors such as the different WDIM operation modes (diesel only, wind−diesel and wind only) simulated, the types of WTGs used in the WDIM (constant- and variable-speed types), or the use of different short-term energy storage technologies (batteries, ultracapacitors, flywheels) to improve the WDIM power quality, stability and reliability. Papers about the dynamic simulation of related isolated microgrids are also reviewed. Finally, as an e... [more]

Keywords: distribution networks, optimal control, optimal dispatching order, penalty electricity price, supply and demand balance
With the integration of large-scale renewable energy and the implementation of demand response, the complexity and volatility of distribution network operations are increasing. This has led to the inconsistency between the actual net power consumption of power users and their optimal dispatching orders. As a result, the distribution networks cannot operate according to their optimization strategy. The study proposed a penalty electricity price mechanism and the optimal control method based on this electricity price mechanism for distribution networks. First, we established the structure of the distribution network optimal control system. Second, aiming at the actual net power consumption (including power generation and consumption) of power users tracking their dispatching orders, we established a penalty electricity price mechanism. Third, we designed an optimal control strategy and process of distribution networks based on the penalty electricity price. Finally, we verified the propo... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, mathematical modeling, MSW management, recycling
Municipal waste management system modeling based on the mass balance of individual waste streams allows us to answer the question of how the system will react to organizational changes, e.g., to the expected reduction in the amount of plastics or the introduction of a deposit for glass and/or plastic packaging. Based on the data on Polish municipal solid waste and the forecast of changes in its quantity and composition, as well as demographic data, a balance model was prepared to assess the impact of introducing higher and higher levels of recycling, in accordance with the circular economy assumptions on the waste management system. It has been shown that, for the Polish composition of municipal waste, even if the assumed recycling levels of individual streams are achieved, achieving the general target level of 65% recycling in 2025/30 may not be feasible. The possibility of achieving a higher level of recycling will be possible due the introduction of selective ash collection from ind... [more]
