Power Transfer Control Strategy Based on True Bipolar MMC-MTDC System
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flexible direct current transmission, power transfer, true bipolar
The true bipolar modular multilevel converter-based multi-terminal direct current (MMC-MTDC) DC transmission line is prone to single-pole grounding fault, which may cause overload and overcurrent of the non-fault DC line with fault poles, resulting in system protection misoperation and system collapse. Therefore, the power transfer control strategy should be adopted to improve system stability. In addition, considering that the commutator stations of true bipolar MMC-MTDC system may have unipolar faults, it is necessary to adopt the control strategy of inter-pole power transfer or inter-station power transfer to improve the transmission capacity of the system under fault conditions. In this paper, a power transfer control strategy is proposed, which is widely applicable to MMC-MTDC system. In the case of line fault, the power transfer takes into account the line power margin and the power margin of converter station. The inter-pole power transfer is better than the inter-station power... [more]

Activities in Divertor Reflector and Linear Plates Using WCLL and HCPB Breeding Blanket Concepts
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: activity, breeding blanket, DEMO, FISPACT, fusion, fusion
In fusion devices, such as European Demonstration Fusion Power Reactor (EU DEMO), primary neutrons can cause material activation due to the interaction between the source particles and the targeting material. Subsequently, the reactor’s inner components become activated. For safety and safe performance purposes, it is necessary to evaluate neutron-induced activities. Activities results from divertor reflector and liner plates are presented in this work. The purpose of liner shielding plates is to protect the vacuum vessel and magnet coils from neutrons. As for reflector plates, the function is to shield the cooling components under plasma-facing components from alpha particles, thermal effects, and impurities. Plates are made of Eurofer with a 3 mm layer of tungsten, while the water is used for cooling purposes. The calculations were performed using two EU DEMO MCNP (Monte Carlo N-Particles) models with different breeding blanket configurations: helium-cooled pebble bed (HCPB) and wate... [more]

Proposal of a Novel Mooring System Using Three-Bifurcated Mooring Lines for Spar-Type Off-Shore Wind Turbines
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clump mass, spar-type platform, three-bifurcated mooring system, vibration control, wind turbine
Floating wind turbine vibration controlling becomes more and more important with the increase in wind turbine size. Thus, a novel three-bifurcated mooring system is proposed for Spar-type floating wind turbines. Compared with the original mooring system using three mooring lines, three-bifurcated sub-mooring-lines are added into the novel mooring system. Specifically, each three-bifurcated sub-mooring-line is first connected to a Spar-type platform using three fairleads, then it is connected to the anchor using the main mooring line. Six fairleads are involved in the proposed mooring system, theoretically resulting in larger overturning and torsional stiffness. For further improvement, a clump mass is attached onto the main mooring lines of the proposed mooring system. The wind turbine surge, pitch, and yaw movements under regular and irregular waves are calculated to quantitatively examine the mooring system performances. A recommended configuration for the proposed mooring system is... [more]

Adaline-Based Control Schemes for Non-Sinusoidal Multiphase Drives−Part I: Torque Optimization for Healthy Mode
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive linear neuron, multi-harmonic, multiphase machine, non-sinusoidal electromotive force, seven-phase machine, torque ripple elimination
More degrees of freedom not only enable multiphase drives to be fault-tolerant but also allow non-sinusoidal electromotive forces (NS-EMFs) in high-quality vector control. NS-EMFs lead to lower costs of design and manufacturing of electrical machines. However, the presence of multi-harmonics in NS-EMFs possibly generates pulsating torque in both healthy and faulty conditions of multiphase drives. To facilitate the use of NS-EMFs, this two-part study proposes control schemes to adaptively improve torque quality of multiphase drives in dealing with multi-harmonics of NS-EMFs. The proposed schemes are based on a simple but effective type of artificial intelligence, Adaptive Linear Neuron (Adaline). The knowledge of multiphase drives including the harmonic ranks of NS-EMFs and the rotor position is exploited to design the online-trained optimal Adalines. The first part of this study is to propose a control scheme using an Adaline for healthy mode with high-quality torque regardless of nume... [more]

Effects of Reversed Shock Waves on Operation Mode in H2/O2 Rotating Detonation Chambers
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: mode switching, operation mode, reversed shock wave, rotating detonation chamber
Operation modes are an important topic in the research of Rotating Detonation Chamber (RDC) as it can affect the stability of RDC. However, they have not been discussed in detail due to the limitation of measurement means in experiments. The aim of this research is to investigate the mechanism of different operation modes by numerical simulation. In this paper, a numerical simulation for RDCs with separate injectors is carried out. Different operation modes and mode switching are analyzed. There is a series of reversed shock waves in the flow field. It was found that they have great effects on operation mode and mode switching in RDCs. A reversed shock wave can transit into a detonation wave after passing through isolated fresh gas region where fresh gas and burnt gas distribute alternatively. This shock-to-detonation transition (SDT) phenomenon will influence the ignition process, contra-rotating waves mode and mode switching in RDCs. SDT makes the number of detonation wave increases,... Anaerobic Digestion of Cigarette Butts: Microbial Community Analysis and Energy Production Estimation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, cigarette butts, methane, microbial community, waste to energy
Anaerobic digestion using cigarette butts, one of most littered items, was studied not only as a waste treatment, but also as an energy production method. Methane production from cigarette butts was measured through the biochemical methane potential (BMP) test and it was evaluated whether it is possible to produce electrical energy. Intact cigarettes or individual components (filter, paper, and leaf) were supplied as the sole carbon source (substrate) for the BMP test. The tendency of methane production indicated biodegradation in the order of paper, filter, and leaves; however, the filter of cigarettes was the substrate produced the highest amount of methane per total solid. The microbial community was also analyzed in each anaerobic digestion reactor, and substrate-specific microorganisms were identified, such as Proteiniphilum strain (filter) and Methanobacterium formicicum (paper). In intact cigarettes, the related microbial community became dominant over time in the order of paper... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: COMSOL, environmentally friendly gas, streamer, surface discharge
As an environmentally friendly gas with good insulation and stable chemical properties, CF3I gas mixture is considered as a potential alternative to SF6 gas to compensate for the shortcomings of SF6 gas as a greenhouse gas. This article attempts to study the CF3I ternary gas mixtures with c-C4F8 and N2 by considering the process of streamer development in surface discharge. The model of surface discharge in CF3I gas mixture under DC voltage was established by COMSOL, and the drift-diffusion equations of particles was solved to show the discharge process, and the changes of electric field and particle concentration, etc. during the development of streamer were obtained, which provides the theoretical basis for the reliable diagnosis of partial discharge. On this basis, the model is compared with models for two other different gases (SF6/N2, artificial air) in terms of particle characteristics, streamer characteristics and streamer branches characteristics. Finally, it is concluded that... [more]

Energy Resources Exploitation in the Russian Arctic: Challenges and Prospects for the Sustainable Development of the Ecosystem
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Arctic, business, ecosystem, Energy, environmental risks, oil and gas projects, project risk management, state, sustainable development
According to the forecasts made by IEA, BP, and Total in early 2021, the demand for hydrocarbons will continue for decades, and their share in the global energy balance will remain significant. Russia, as a key player in the energy market, is interested in maintaining and increasing hydrocarbon production, so further exploitation of the Arctic energy resources is an urgent issue. A large number of onshore oil and gas projects have been successfully implemented in the Arctic since the 1930s, while recently, special attention has been paid to the offshore energy resources and implementation of natural gas liquefaction projects. However, the implementation of oil and gas projects in the Arctic is characterized by a negative impact on the environment, which leads to a violation of the ecological balance in the Arctic, and affects the stability of its ecosystem, which is one of the most vulnerable ecosystems on the planet. The main goal of the present study is to understand how the implemen... [more]

Numerical Investigation on Propagation Behaviors of a Three-Dimensional Fracture Network Coupled with Microseismicity in Fractured Shale Reservoirs
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: discrete fracture network, discrete lattice method, hydraulic fracturing, microseismic events, multi-cluster fracturing, unconventional reservoir
The formation mechanism and propagation behaviors of a three-dimensional hydraulic fracture network in fractured shale reservoirs remain unclear, especially when the scale of hydraulic fractures is much larger than that of natural fractures. In this study, taking the well XH in the Longmaxi shale reservoir in the Sichuan Basin, China as an example, we develop a fully three-dimensional numerical model for hydraulic fracturing coupled with microseismicity based on the discrete lattice method. We introduce a randomly generated discrete fracture network into the proposed model and explore the formation mechanism of the hydraulic fracture network under the condition that the hydraulic fractures are much larger than natural fractures in scale. Moreover, microseismic events are inversely synthesized in the numerical model, which allows the evolution of the fracture network to be monitored and evaluated quantitatively. In addition, we analyze the effects of injection rate, horizontal stress di... [more]

Method for Tuning the Parameters of Active Force Reducing Building Vibrations—Numerical Tests
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: building, numerical model, numerical model, resonance zones, structure vibrations
The paper formulates a method of active reduction of structure vibrations in the selected resonance zones of the tested object. The method ensures reduction of vibrations of the selected resonance zones by determining the parameters of the active force that meets the desired dynamic properties. The paper presents a method for determining the parameters of the active force by reducing the vibrations of the structure in its resonance zones to a given vibration amplitude. For this purpose, an analytical form was formulated, which will clearly define the dynamic properties of the tested object and the force reducing the vibrations in the form of a mathematical model. The formulated mathematical model is a modified object input function, which in its form takes into account the properties of the active force reducing the vibrations. In such a case, it is possible to use the methods of mechanical synthesis to decompose the modified characteristic function into the parameters of the system an... [more]

Analytical Study of Nonlinear Vibration in a Rub-Impact Jeffcott Rotor
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: dry friction damper, nonlinear rotor dynamics, Optimal Auxiliary Functions Method, rub-impact, stability analysis
The purpose of this work is to explore the nonlinear vibration of a rub-impact Jeffcott rotor. In the first stage, the motion is not affected by the friction force, but in the second stage, the motion is influenced by the normal force and the friction force. The governing equations of the rotor of this model are derived in this paper. In consequence, there appears a difference between the two stages. We establish an approximate analytical solution for nonlinear vibrations corresponding to two stages with the mention of the location of jumps. The obtained results are compared with the numerical integration results. The steady-state response and the stability of the solutions are analytically determined for the two stages. The stability of a full annular rub solution is studied with the help of the Routh−Hurwitz criterion. Effects of different parameters of the system, the saddle-node bifurcation (turning points) and the Hopf bifurcation are presented. The main contribution lies in the a... [more]

Production of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete with Low Energy Consumption and Carbon Footprint Using Supplementary Cementitious Materials Instead of Silica Fume: A Review
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ground granulated blast furnace slag, metakaolin, rice husk ashes, silica fume, ultra-high-performance concrete
The increase in cement production as a result of growing demand in the construction sector means an increase in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. These emissions are estimated at 7% of the global production of CO2. Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) has excellent mechanical and durability characteristics. Nevertheless, it is costly and affects the environment due to its high amount of cement, which may reach 800−1000 kg/m3. In order to reduce the cement content, silica fume (SF) was utilized as a partial alternative to cement in the production of UHPC. Nevertheless, SF is very expensive. Therefore, the researchers investigated the use of supplementary cementitious materials cheaper than SF. Very limited review investigates addressed the impact of such materials on different properties of UHPC in comparison to that of SF. Thus, this study aims to summarize the effectiveness of using some common supplementary cementitious materials, including fly ashes (FA), ground granulated bla... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: economic dispatch, Hydrogen, integrated energy systems, iodine–sulfur cycle, Nuclear, Stochastic Optimization
Hydrogen produced without carbon emissions could be a useful fuel as nations look to decarbonize their electricity, transport, and industry sectors. Using the iodine−sulfur (IS) cycle coupled with a nuclear heat source is one method for producing hydrogen without the use of fossil fuels. An economic dispatch model was developed for a nuclear-driven IS system to determine hydrogen sale prices that would make such a system profitable. The system studied is the HTTR-GT/H2, a design for power and hydrogen cogeneration at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency’s High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor. This study focuses on the development of the economic model and the role that input data plays in the final calculated values. Using a historical price duration curve shows that the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) or breakeven sale price of hydrogen would need to be 98.1 JPY/m3 or greater. Synthetic time histories were also used and found the LCOH to be 67.5 JPY/m3. The price duration input was f... [more]

Distributed Control Strategy of Single-Phase Battery Systems for Compensation of Unbalanced Active Powers in a Three-Phase Four-Wire Microgrid
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: current unbalance factor, distributed control, multi-agents, rooftop PV unit, single-phase battery storage system, unbalanced active powers, voltage unbalance factor
Unbalanced active powers can affect power quality and system reliability due to high penetration and uneven allocation of single-phase photovoltaic (PV) rooftop systems and load demands in a three-phase four-wire microgrid. This paper proposes a distributed control strategy to alleviate the unbalanced active powers using distributed single-phase battery storage systems. In order to balance the unbalanced active powers at the point of common coupling (PCC) in a distributed manner, the agents (households’ single-phase battery storage systems) must have information on the active powers and phases. Inspired by supervised learning, a clustering approach was developed to use labels in order to match the three-phase active powers at the PCC with the agents’ phases. This enables the agent to select the correct active power data from the three-phase active powers. Then, a distributed power balancing control strategy is applied by all agents to compensate the unbalanced active powers. Each agent... [more]

Design of Hardware Setup Based on IEC 61850 Communication Protocol for Detection & Blocking of Harmonics in Power Transformer
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: 7UT61), differential protection, DIGSI4, IEC-61850, multifunctional relay (7SJ64, over-current relay, transformer protection
In this paper, the authors have developed a hardware model for blocking even and odd harmonics of a power transformer. In the proposed hardware model, intelligent differential & over-current relays are used for the blocking of harmonics of a power transformer. The harmonic restraint function on the differential relay (7UT61) prevents the relay from tripping during transformer magnetizing inrush current. However, the over-current relays which are used for back up protection does not have a harmonic restraint element, and over-current relay trips due to magnetizing inrush current, causes unwanted interruptions and power failures. The establishment of harmonic blocking scheme for over-current protection in power transformers is an important finding of this research study. IEC61850 standard-Based GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Event) applications used in power transformer protection for fast detecting and clearing of faults is an interested study presented in the proposed work.

Control Performance Improvement of Hydro-Viscous Clutch Based on Fuzzy-PID Controller
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Fuzzy-PID control, hydro-viscous clutch, mathematical model, pump control system, speed fluctuation
As a rotational speed controller, a hydro-viscous clutch (HVC) is usually used in the constant pressure water supply system to maintain the needed water pressure constant. However, when the hydro-viscous clutch is working, it often suffers from the problem of output rotational speed fluctuation since the spool of proportional relief valve can easily get stuck. Consequently, water pressure will fluctuate too. A special pump control system of HVC was proposed based on the Fuzzy-PID controller for the purpose of reducing the fluctuation rate. The MATLAB simulation was carried out according to the mathematical model and the results show that the Fuzzy-PID control strategy is superior to traditional PID control. The corresponding experiment was performed and the result indicate that through applying the Fuzzy-PID controller based pump control system, the rotational output speed fluctuation of HVC can be inhibited from ±60π to ±6π rad/min, and the water pressure fluctuation is dropped from ±...
