Cascaded Voltage and Current Control for a Dual Active Bridge Converter with Current Filters
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: controller tuning, current filter, Dual Active Bridge (DAB), dynamic model, Single Phase Shift (SPS) modulation
The paper describes the cascaded voltage and current control for a bidirectional DC/DC converter in Dual Active Bridge (DAB) topology. The typical DAB converter circuit was extended by additional current filters, which allow it to operate in application fields with high requirements on current ripples. The core concept of the presented solution is usage of the modified Single Phase Shift (SPS) modulation, which allows to compensate for the DC-bias current occurring in dynamic states and provides a settling time of half switching cycle during transients. Its features were utilized to build a simplified dynamic model of the converter. The linear Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers are used in both voltage and current control loops. Based on the developed dynamic models, the tuning rules for both controllers were derived. In both cases, a number of the tuned parameters were reduced from two to one (which can present a great practical value for application engineers). The proposed solut... [more]

Modular Multilevel Converters for Large-Scale Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems: A Review
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: maximum power point tracking, modular inverters, photovoltaic systems, power electronic converters, switched mode power supplies
The use of photovoltaic (PV) systems as the energy source of electrical distributed generators (DG) is gaining popularity, due to the progress of power electronics devices and technologies. Large-scale solar PV power plants are becoming the preferable solution to meet the fast growth of electrical energy demand, as they can be installed in less than one year, as compared to around four years in the case of conventional power plants. Modular multilevel inverters (MMIs) are the best solution to connect these large-scale PV plants to the medium-voltage (MV) grid, due to their numerous merits, such as providing better power quality, having higher efficiency, providing better reliability, and their scalability. However, MMIs are still progressing and need some improvement before they can be implemented safely in the industrial, medium, and high voltage networks. The main purpose of this paper is to review the present MMIs topologies when used in PV applications. The review aims to present a... [more]

An Energy Management System for the Control of Battery Storage in a Grid-Connected Microgrid Using Mixed Integer Linear Programming
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: battery energy storage system, energy management system, LSTM, MILP, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, RH
This paper proposes an energy management system (EMS) for battery storage systems in grid-connected microgrids. The battery charging/discharging power is determined such that the overall energy consumption cost is minimized, considering the variation in grid tariff, renewable power generation and load demand. The system is modeled as an economic load dispatch optimization problem over a 24 h horizon and solved using mixed integer linear programming (MILP). This formulation, therefore, requires knowledge of the expected renewable energy power production and load demand over the next 24 h. To achieve this, a long short-term memory (LSTM) network is proposed. The receding horizon (RH) strategy is suggested to reduce the impact of prediction error and enable real-time implementation of the EMS that benefits from using actual generation and demand data on the day. At each hour, the LSTM predicts generation and load data for the next 24 h, the dispatch problem is then solved and the battery... [more]

A Brief History of the Kaplan Turbine Invention
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Francis turbine, impeller blades, specific speed, turbine impeller, Viktor Kaplan
One of the most important milestones in the history of hydropower is the invention of the Kaplan turbine. It is a machine stemming from the Francis turbine, which Viktor Kaplan was originally trying to improve. However, it gradually developed into the creation of a completely new solution of an impeller with an axial flow rate and adjustable blades. The first patent relating to the new invention dates from 1913. Shortly afterwards, the Kaplan turbine became the most widely used type of device for the use of low heads and variable flow rates. That meant a significant expansion of the potential of economically usable hydropower. The article briefly introduces the history of turbine development. The overall picture is then completed by a few less-known historical documents.

Analytical, Experimental, and Numerical Investigation of Energy in Hydraulic Cylinder Dynamics of Agriculture Scale Excavators
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: Energy, hydraulic machinery, physical parameter identification, port-Hamiltonian theory
This paper discusses energy behaviors in hydraulic cylinder dynamics, which are important for model-based control of agriculture scale excavators. First, we review hydraulic cylinder dynamics and update our physical parameter identification method to agriculture scale experimental excavators in order to construct a nominal numerical simulator. Second, we analyze the energy behaviors from the port-Hamiltonian point of view which provides many links to model-based control at laboratory scale at least. At agriculture scale, even though the nominal numerical simulator is much simpler than an experimental excavator, the analytical, experimental, and numerical energy behaviors are very close to each other. This implies that the port-Hamiltonian point of view will be applicable in agriculture scale against modeling errors.

A Review of Hydrogen as a Fuel in Internal Combustion Engines
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrogen fuel, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The demand for fossil fuels is increasing because of globalization and rising energy demands. As a result, many nations are exploring alternative energy sources, and hydrogen is an efficient and practical alternative fuel. In the transportation industry, the development of hydrogen-powered cars aims to maximize fuel efficiency and significantly reduce exhaust gas emission and concentration. The impact of using hydrogen as a supplementary fuel for spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI) engines on engine performance and gas emissions was investigated in this study. By adding hydrogen as a fuel in internal combustion engines, the torque, power, and brake thermal efficiency of the engines decrease, while their brake-specific fuel consumption increase. This study suggests that using hydrogen will reduce the emissions of CO, UHC, CO2, and soot; however, NOx emission is expected to increase. Due to the reduction of environmental pollutants for most engines and the related environme... [more]

Life Cycle Air Emissions and Social Human Health Impact Assessment of Liquified Natural Gas Maritime Transport
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air emissions, life cycle assessment, Liquified Natural Gas, maritime transport, social human health
Air pollution, which causes over seven million deaths per year, is the most significant and specifically related to health impacts. Nearly 90% of the urban population worldwide is exposed to pollution not meeting the World Health Organization guidelines for air quality. Many atmospheric carbon oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter emitting sources, such as inefficient energy and polluting transportation, directly impact health. Natural gas maritime transport from various parts of the world (carbon supplied to consuming areas) has become more critical. Natural gas liquefaction offers a cleaner and more efficient transportation option and also increases its storage capacity. It is expected that natural gas will reduce the human health impact compared with other traditional fuels consumed. This research establishes a life cycle assessment model of air emission and social human health impact related to LNG maritime transport to investigate the impact of each type of fuel used for... Energy Savings Results from Small Commercial Building Retrofits in the US
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, retrofit, small commercial
Small commercial buildings, or those comprising less than 50,000 square feet of floor area, represent 94% of U.S commercial buildings by count and consume approximately 8% of the nation’s primary energy; as such, they represent a largely unexploited opportunity for energy savings. Small commercial buildings also represent a large economic market—the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) estimated the small commercial retrofit market at USD 35.6 billion. Despite the prominence of small commercial buildings and the economic opportunity for energy retrofits, many energy efficiency programs focus on large commercial buildings, and create efficiency solutions that do not meet the needs of the small commercial market. This paper presents an analysis of 34 small commercial case study projects that implemented energy efficiency retrofits. This paper contributes to the existing building retrofit body of knowledge in the following ways: (1) it identifies the decision criteria used by sm... [more]

Gathering Energy of the Stray Currents in Electrified Railways Environment for Power Supply
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: control algorithm, electrochemical corrosion, energy harvesting, rail potential, rails, stray currents
The paper presents a new, unconventional energy harvesting (EH) method for supplying low-power devices on electrified railway lines that utilises stray currents and the non-zero potential of the rails to the ground. The EH device gathers the energy and stores it in batteries. It could even work in extremely unfavourable weather conditions and could be easily placed in almost any location. The presented real-life data show that the average available power is less than 250 mW and the average useful power is about 100 mW. This is enough to supply ultra-low power microcontrollers, which only occasionally use energy-consuming modules to perform measurements or communicate. The disadvantage of the EH method is the introduction of resistance between the rail and the earth, which increases stray currents and could increase the electrochemical corrosion of the rail. To reduce the impact of this resistance, a method for balancing the flowing charge is proposed. After balancing, the average of th... [more]

Effect of Microwave Pulses on the Morphology and Development of Spark-Ignited Flame Kernel
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy absorption, flame kernel morphology, interaction regime, microwave pulses, spark ignition
Microwave-assisted spark ignition (MAI) is a promising way to enhance the ignition performance of engines under lean conditions. To understand the effect of microwave-induced flow during MAI, the development and morphology of spark-ignited methane-air flame kernel under various microwave pulse parameters are experimentally studied. Experiments are conducted in a constant volume combustion chamber, and flame development is recorded through a high-speed shadowgraph method. Flame area and deformation index are adopted to evaluate the flame characteristic. Results show that increasing the microwave pulse energy from 0 to 150 mJ exhibits a threshold process for expanding the flame kernel area under 0.2 MPa ambient pressure. When the pulse energy is below the threshold of 90 mJ, the microwave enhancing efficiency is much lower than that beyond the threshold. Increasing microwave pulse repetition frequency (PRF) changes the flow on flame surface and raises the absorption efficiency for microw... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: 5G, antenna array, defective ground surface, future handsets, multiband antenna system, smartphone antenna
The study and exploration of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MMIMO) and millimeter-wave wireless access technology has been spurred by a shortage of bandwidth in the wireless communication sector. Massive MIMO, which combines antennas at the transmitter and receiver, is a key enabler technology for next-generation networks to enable exceptional spectrum and energy efficiency with simple processing techniques. For massive MIMOs, the lower band microwave or millimeter-wave band and the antenna are impeccably combined with RF transceivers. As a result, the 5G wireless communication antenna differs from traditional antennas in many ways. A new concept of the MIMO tri-band hexagonal antenna array is being introduced for next-generation cellular networks. With a total scaling dimension of 150 × 75 mm2, the structure consists of multiple hexagonal fractal antenna components at different corners of the patch. Performance Augmentation of the Flat Plate Solar Thermal Collector: A Review
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flat plate solar collector, nanofluid, solar selective coating, turbulators, vacuum
The need for hot water in residential buildings requires a significant energy potential. Therefore, an efficient water heating system is important to achieve the goal of saving high-grade energy. The most simple and cheapest solar water heater is a flat plate solar collector (FPSC), which can increase the thermal energy of fluid by absorbing solar radiation. The performance of FPSC is comparatively low due to the dilute nature of solar insolation. Therefore, advancement of FPSC is being undertaken to improve the performance and achieve size reduction. In past, several techniques have been exploited to improve the performance of FPSC, which are presented in the present paper. These techniques include surface modifications, use of nanofluids, solar selective coating, and applications of a mini/macro channel, heat pipe, and vacuum around absorber. Surface modification on the absorber/absorber tube techniques are exploited to transfer the maximum possible solar energy to working fluids by... [more]

Optimization Method for Multiple Measures to Mitigate Line Overloads in Power Systems
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC emergency control, emergency control, line overload, load shedding, overload protection, power flow transfer
Line overload is one of the important causal factors of cascading failures and blackouts in power systems. An optimization method for protection and control measures to mitigate line overloads is proposed in this study. The method consists of two main parts, i.e., the modeling process and the solving process. In the modeling process, an optimization model including overload protection and emergency control measures is developed using PFT (Power Flow Tracing). In the solving process, a multi-stage optimization method using IBSO (Improved Brain Storm Optimization algorithm) is proposed to obtain the final result. The aim of this study is to form a coordinated protection and control strategy that reduces the power on the overloaded line within the safety limits and minimizes the load loss of the power system. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: consumer behavior, consumer ethnocentrism, food marketing, gender differences, higgins regulatory focus theory, local food preference, schwartz theory of values, willingness to pay (WTP) a higher price for domestic products
This paper aims to identify which Schwartz values and regulatory focus orientations influence consumer behavior on the food market in the domain of preference for domestic products, which is closely related to consumer ethnocentrism. The CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interviews) method was applied. The sample consisting of 1000 respondents was representative for the Polish adult population in terms of sex, age, education, place of living (rural vs. urban), and region. The willingness to pay (WTP) a higher price for domestic products was affected by the tradition and universalism values. Consumer value orientations and regulatory focus were more powerful in explaining the WTP than demographic or socio-economic variables. The theories of value orientations and regulatory focus were found to be more relevant for men than for women, as reflected in adjusted regression determination coefficients. Finally, the promotion regulatory focus was a significant predictor of the WTP among men, but not... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), salt cavern, thermo-mechanical effects
The article presents the results of a numerical simulation of the deformation-stress state in the rock mass around a salt cavern which is a part of a CAES installation (Compressed Air Energy Storage). The model is based on the parameters of the Huntorf power plant installation. The influence of temperature and salt-creep speed on the stability of the storage cavern was determined on the basis of the three different stress criteria and the effort of the rock mass in three points of the cavern at different time intervals. The analysis includes two creep speeds, which represent two different types of salt. The solutions showed that the influence of temperature on the deformation-stress state around the CAES cavern is of importance when considering the stress state at a distance of less than 60 m from the cavern axis (at cavern diameter 30−35 m). With an increase in cavern diameter, it is possible that the impact range will be proportionately larger, but each case requires individual model... [more]

The ambient temperature has a great influence on the discharge and charging performance of a lithium battery, which may cause thermal runaway of the battery pack in extreme cases. In terms of the poor cooling effect caused by only using the cooling bottom plate for liquid cooling and the fact that the battery pack needs to be preheated before it can be used normally, a new cooling structure design was carried out, and a variety of cooling schemes and preheating schemes were proposed for analysis and comparison. The Star ccm+ simulation software was used to analyze and study their liquid cooling performance and preheating performance under different conditions. The best cooling scheme and preheating scheme were obtained by comparing the results of the simulation analysis. Subject: Materials
Keywords: COMSOL, ex-FEM, phase change materials (PCMs), thermal performance
The thermal performance of building envelopes is essential for building thermal comfort and the reduction of building energy requirements. Phase change materials (PCMs) implemented in building envelopes can improve thermal performance. An explicit finite element method (ex-FEM) has been developed based on a previous study to investigate the heat transfer performance through building walls with installed PCMs. For verification, we introduce an electrical circuit analogy (ECA) method. For model validation, at first, COMSOL is used. For comparison, data were collected from experiments using a small hotbox, part of the sides are covered by PCMs with different configurations. This work shows how the ex-FEM model can predict the wall’s temperature profile with and without incorporated PCM. With the implementation of PCMs, the work problematizes unpredictable influences for modeling. In addition, the study introduces results from simulations of sequencing of PCM layers in wall construction.

This paper presents a nonlinear magnetic equivalent circuit method and an electromagnetic characteristic analysis and verification of a wound rotor synchronous generator (WRSG). The reluctance generated by the stator, rotor, and air gap is subdivided to form a reluctance construction. A nonlinear magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) for the WRSG is constructed and solved by an iteration method. Moreover, to calculate the inductance of the generator, the reluctance circuit of the d−qaxis is constructed, and the inductance of the generator is obtained using the initial relative permeability of the material.
