Numerical Study of 4H-SiC UMOSFETs with Split-Gate and P+ Shielding
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: current spreading layer, P+ shielding, silicon carbide, split gate, UMOSFETs.
In this paper, performances of a 4H-SiC UMOSFET with split gate and P+ shielding in different configurations are simulated and compared, with an emphasis on the switching characteristics and short circuit capability. A novel structure with the split gate in touch with the P+ shielding is proposed. The key design issues for 4H-SiC UMOSFETs are trench gate dielectric protection and reverse transfer capacitance Crss reduction. Based on simulation results, it is concluded that a UMOSFET with a gate structure combining split gate grounded to the trench bottom protection P+ shielding layer and a current spreading layer is achieved to yield the best compromise between conduction, switching, and short circuit performance. The split-gate design can effectively reduce Crss by shielding the coupling between the gate electrode and the drain region. The P+ shielding design not only protects the oxide at trench bottom corners but also minimizes the short channel effect due to drain-induced barrier l... [more]

Alienation Coefficient and Wigner Distribution Function Based Protection Scheme for Hybrid Power System Network with Renewable Energy Penetration
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alienation coefficient, hybrid power system network, power system fault, protection, solar energy, Wigner distribution function, wind energy.
The rapid growth of grid integrated renewable energy (RE) sources resulted in development of the hybrid grids. Variable nature of RE generation resulted in problems related to the power quality (PQ), power system reliability, and adversely affects the protection relay operation. High penetration of RE to the utility grid is achieved using multi-tapped lines for integrating the wind and solar energy and also to supply loads. This created considerable challenges for power system protection. To overcome these challenges, an algorithm is introduced in this paper for providing protection to the hybrid grid with high RE penetration level. All types of fault were identified using a fault index (FI), which is based on both the voltage and current features. This FI is computed using element to element multiplication of current-based Wigner distribution index (WD-index) and voltage-based alienation index (ALN-index). Application of the algorithm is generalized by testing the algorithm for the re... [more]

Development of an Efficient Cooling Strategy in the Heading Face of Underground Mines
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air cooler, excavation roadway, heading face, high-efficient cooling, mine cooling system.
Heat damage in deep mines is severe and can lead to adverse health effects. The existing refrigeration schemes for the heading face in excavation roadways aim to cool the whole cooling region. However, the ratio of the area occupied by workers to that of the cooling region is quite small. A great quantity of energy for refrigeration is doomed to waste. In this study, a new cooling strategy for building a non-uniform environment in the heading face was developed. A certain quantity of well-designed tracking air coolers were distributed in the excavation roadway near the heading face. The air cooler tracked the constantly moving workers and blew cold air to them. Economic analysis based on estimation of the cooling load for this cooling strategy was conducted. The airflow in the excavation roadway was numerically simulated to estimate the cooling effect. An average energy saving of approximately 30% could be realized. The thermal environment for the workers whether near the heading face... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: geomechanical model, mechanical properties, NDNR block, pore pressure, shale gas, Sichuan Basin, stress state.
The abundant reserve of shale gas in Sichuan Basin has become a significant natural gas component in China. To achieve efficient development of shale gas, it is necessary to analyze the stress state, pore pressure, and reservoir mechanical properties such that an accurate geomechanical model can be established. In this paper, Six wells of Neijiang-Dazu and North Rongchang (NDNR) Block were thoroughly investigated to establish the geomechanical model for the study area. The well log analysis was performed to derive the in-situ stresses and pore pressure while the stress polygon was applied to constrain the value of the maximum horizontal principal stress. Image and caliper data, mini-frac test and laboratory rock mechanics test results were used to calibrate the geomechanical model. The model was further validated by comparing the model prediction against the actual wellbore failure observed in the field. It was found that it is associated with the strike-slip (SS) stress regime; the or... [more]

Optimizing Energy Consumption in Transportation: Literature Review, Insights, and Research Opportunities
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: efficient energy consumption, intelligent algorithms, optimization problems, Sustainability, transportation systems.
From airplanes to electric vehicles and trains, modern transportation systems require large quantities of energy. These vast amounts of energy have to be produced somewhere—ideally by using sustainable sources—and then brought to the transportation system. Energy is a scarce and costly resource, which cannot always be produced from renewable sources. Therefore, it is critical to consume energy as efficiently as possible, that is, transportation activities need to be carried out with an optimal intake of energetic means. This paper reviews existing work on the optimization of energy consumption in the area of transportation, including road freight, passenger rail, maritime, and air transportation modes. The paper also analyzes how optimization methods—of both exact and approximate nature—have been used to deal with these energy-optimization problems. Finally, it provides insights and discusses open research opportunities regarding the use of new intelligent algorithms—combining metaheur... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: control algorithm, heat pump, PV self-consumption.
Heat pumps in combination with a photovoltaic system are a very promising option for the transformation of the energy system. By using such a system for coupling the electricity and heat sectors, buildings can be heated sustainably and with low greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reveals a method for dimensioning a suitable system of heat pump and photovoltaics (PV) for residential buildings in order to achieve a high level of (photovoltaic) PV self-consumption. This is accomplished by utilizing a thermal energy storage (TES) for shifting the operation of the heat pump to times of high PV power production by an intelligent control algorithm, which yields a high portion of PV power directly utilized by the heat pump. In order to cover the existing set of building infrastructure, 4 reference buildings with different years of construction are introduced for both single- and multi-family residential buildings. By this means, older buildings with radiator heating as well as new buildings w... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decentralized control, input voltage sharing, input-series-output-parallel converter, output current sharing.
Input-Series-Output-Parallel (ISOP) converters, a kind of modular converter, are used in high-input voltage and high-output current applications. In ISOP converters, Input Voltage Sharing (IVS) and Output Current Sharing (OCS) should be implemented for stable operation. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a decentralized control method. In the proposed control, output current reference is changed according to the decentralized control characteristic in individual current control loops. In this way, the proposed control method is able to implement IVS and OCS without communication. Also, this method can be easily used in current control loops and has high reliability compared to conventional control methods that require communication. In this paper, the operation principle is described to elucidate the proposed control and a small signal model of an ISOP converter is also implemented. Based on the small signal model, IVS stability analysis is performed using pole-zero ma... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biomass, biomass deconstruction, lignin, NMR characterization, structural changes.
In this study, lignin with fine structures and facile enzymatic saccharifying residue were successively dissociated based on the lignin-first biomass deconstruction strategy. In the lignin-first process, aldehyde-protected lignin fractions were firstly isolated by acid-catalyzed dioxane extraction in the presence of formaldehyde (FA) and acetaldehyde (AA) and then analyzed by advanced nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The optimized hydrogenolysis of the extracted lignin (LFA and LAA) resulted in a high yield (42.57% and 33.00%) of lignin monomers with high product selectivity (mainly 2,6-dimethoxy-4-propylphenol) (39.93% and 46.61%). Moreover, the cellulose-rich residues were saccharified into fermentable glucose for bioethanol production. The glucose yield of the substrate (RAA) reached to 75.12%, which was significantly higher than that (15.4%) of the substrate (RFA). In short, the lignin-first biomass deconstruction by adding AA i... [more]

Determinants of the Forward Premium in the Nord Pool Electricity Market
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electricity, forward premium, futures, quantile regression.
Nord Pool is the leading power market in Europe. It has been documented that the forward contracts traded in this market exhibit a significant forward premium, which could be a sign of market inefficiency. Efficient power markets are important, especially when there is a goal to increase the share of the power mix stemming from renewable energy sources. We therefore contribute to the understanding of this topic by examining how the forward premium in the Nord Pool market depend on several economic and physical conditions. We utilise two methods: ordinary least squares and quantile regression. The results show that the reservoir level and the basis (the difference between the forward and spot price) have a significant impact on the forward premium. The realised volatility of futures prices and the implied volatility of the stock market have strong effects on both the conditional lower and upper tails of the forward premium. We also find that, as the market has matured, the forward premi... [more]

A High-Gain Observer-Based Adaptive Super-Twisting Algorithm for DC-Link Voltage Control of NPC Converters
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive super-twisting algorithm, high-gain observer, three-level NPC converter.
Acting as an interface between the grid and many energy systems, the active front-end (AFE) has been widely used in a large variety of industrial applications. In this paper, in order to ensure the fast dynamic performance and good disturbance rejection ability of the AFE, a high-gain observer (HGO) plus adaptive super-twisting algorithm (STA) for the three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter is proposed. Comparing with the conventional PI control strategy, the proposed controller implements the adaptive STA in the voltage regulator to provide a faster transient response. The gains of the adaptive STA keep varying according to the rules being reduced in steady state but increasing in transient conditions. Therefore, the chattering phenomenon is mitigated and the dynamic response is guaranteed. Additionally, to undermine the impact of external disturbances on the dc-link voltage, a high-efficiency HGO is designed in the voltage regulation loop to reject it. Experimental results... [more]

Unsupervised Monitoring System for Predictive Maintenance of High Voltage Apparatus
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: embedded systems, partial discharges, predictive maintenance.
The online monitoring of a high voltage apparatus is a crucial aspect for a predictive maintenance program. Partial discharges (PDs) phenomena affect the insulation system of an electrical machine and—in the long term—can lead to a breakdown, with a consequent, significant economic loss; wind turbines provide an excellent example. Embedded solutions are therefore required to monitor the insulation status. The paper presents an online system that adopts unsupervised methodologies for assessing the condition of the monitored machine in real time. The monitoring process does not rely on any prior knowledge about the apparatus; nonetheless, the method can identify the relevant drifts in the machine status. In addition, the system is specifically designed to run on low-cost embedded devices.

Anti-Agglomeration Effects of Biodegradable Surfactants from Natural Sources on Natural Gas Hydrate Formation
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anti-agglomerants, gas hydrates, hydrate inhibitors, lanolin, lecithin.
Kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHI) and anti-agglomerants (AA) rather than thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors (THI) are often used for flow assurance in pipelines. This is because they require much lower dosages than thermodynamic inhibitors. Although the hydrate-phase equilibria are not affected, KHI and AA prevent the formed hydrate crystals from growing to a bulky state causing pipeline blockage. However, these KHIs might have huge environmental impact due to leakages from the pipelines. In this study, two biodegradable AA candidates from natural sources (that is, lecithin and lanolin) are proposed and their performances are evaluated by comparing them with and without a conventional AA (Span 80, sorbitan monooleate). At 30% and 50% water cut, the addition of AA materials was found to enhance the flow characteristics substantially in pipelines and hardly affected the maximum value of the rotational torque, respectively. Fabrication of Skutterudite-Based Tubular Thermoelectric Generator
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: joining, power density, skutterudite, specific contact resistance, tubular thermoelectric generator (TTEG).
The conversion efficiency of the thermoelectric generator (TEG) is adversely affected by the quality of thermal contact between the module and the heat source. TEGs with the planar substrate are not suitable for the curved heat sources. Several attempts have been made to tackle this issue by fabricating complex tubular-shaped TEGs; however, all efforts have been limited to low-temperature applications. Furthermore, the electrical contact resistance of the module is critical to achieving a high-power output. In this work, we developed the tubular TEG with significantly low specific contact resistance by optimizing the joining process. We show that the modified resistance welding (MRW) performed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) is an efficient joining method for the fabrication of the TE module, with high feasibility and scalability. This research seeks to suggest important design rules to consider when fabricating TEGs.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: advanced thermodynamic cycles, benzene, cyclopentane, decentralised energy systems, ORC integration technologies, Toluene.
This paper presents an off-design analysis of a gas turbine Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) combined cycle. Combustion turbine performances are significantly affected by fluctuations in ambient conditions, leading to relevant variations in the exhaust gases’ mass flow rate and temperature. The effects of the variation of ambient air temperature have been considered in the simulation of the topper cycle and of the condenser in the bottomer one. Analyses have been performed for different working fluids (toluene, benzene and cyclopentane) and control systems have been introduced on critical parameters, such as oil temperature and air mass flow rate at the condenser fan. Results have highlighted similar power outputs for cycles based on benzene and toluene, while differences as high as 34% have been found for cyclopentane. The power output trend with ambient temperature has been found to be influenced by slope discontinuities in gas turbine exhaust mass flow rate and temperature and by the upp... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bubble, liquid, semi-analytical model, two-phase heat transfer, vapor.
Multi-stage refrigeration systems cover a wide range of possibilities and are diffusing more and more. The idea that inspired this work derived from the need to have a tool to model the energy behavior of the intercooler inside a multi-stage refrigeration system. In this work, a semi-analytical model of a single bubble, injected into the liquid of an intercooler of a multi-stage system, has been developed. The developed model is a set of equations derived from the Fourier equation for heat conduction in defined conditions and includes the effects of sensible and latent heat. The vapor bubble is supposed to be injected in the saturated liquid contained in a tank at a defined depth, at an intermediate pressure. The model has been implemented in Matlab and the results show the influence of the liquid surface tension, the injection depth and the thermal diffusivity of the vapor. The model developed here is a useful low-cost tool for evaluating heat transfer optimization of a separator/inte... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: collapsing cavity model, validation experiment, water hammer with multipoint collapsing, wave velocity of water hammer.
The traditional discrete vapor cavity model (DVCM) is widely used in water hammer simulation. Water column separation in pipelines is usually predicted with this model. The new method uses a new water hammer velocity formula, a new cavity model, and a floating grid method. Through simulations to test the effects of the new model, an experimental platform can be established to realize a water hammer with multipoint collapsing. The numerical simulation was programmed in C++ and the test was carried out with an actual pipeline model built in the laboratory.
