Improved Energy Management in an Intermittently Heated Building Using a Large Broiler House in Central Europe as an Example
Grzegorz Nawalany, Paweł Sokołowski
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: broiler house, building energy management, conditions in the broiler living zone, floor temperature, heat exchange with soil
This paper deals with the problem of rational energy management in an intermittently heated broiler house. The aim was to evaluate the energy amount necessary to heat up the building floor for the production cycle, preceded by a technological interruption of varying length. The scope of studies included the indoor and outdoor air temperature measurements and the soil temperature measurements under the building floor. The results of field tests allowed computer simulations to be carried out in the WUFIplussoftware (Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics, Holzkirchen Branch, Germany). The variant analysis was preceded by the validation of the calculation model whose results showed a strong correlation of theoretical data with actual results. The winter breeding cycle was analyzed in detail. The detailed soil and air temperature curves are presented graphically. The results allow a conclusion that the length of the technological interruption has a significant impact on the amount of en... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: fast terminal sliding mode control, non-linear, power converters, wireless power transfer
Compared to the plug-in charging system, Wireless power transfer (WPT) is simpler, reliable, and user-friendly. Resonant inductive coupling based WPT is the technology that promises to replace the plug-in charging system. It is desired that the WPT system should provide regulated current and power with high efficiency. Due to the instability in the connected load, the system output current, power, and efficiency vary. To solve this issue, a buck converter is implemented on the secondary side of the WPT system, which adjusts its internal resistance by altering its duty cycle. To control the duty cycle of the buck converter, a discrete fast terminal sliding mode controller is proposed to regulate the system output current and power with optimal efficiency. The proposed WPT system uses the LCC-S compensation topology to ensure a constant output voltage at the input of the buck converter. The LCC-S topology is analyzed using the two-port network theory, and governing equations are derived... [more]
Multi-Hop LoRa Network Protocol with Minimized Latency
Dinh Loc Mai, Myung Kyun Kim
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: LoRa networks, low latency, multi-hop networks, parallel transmissions
LoRa (Long Range) is a long-range communications capacity with chirp spread spectrum modulation. It has been developed for Internet of Things (IoT) applications for long-distance and low power consumption. Some authors proposed LoRa protocols such as LoRaWAN, LoRaBlink, DQ-LoRa and the multi-hop LoRa network with linear topology; however, these protocols have disadvantages. In this paper, we propose a minimized latency multi-hop LoRa network protocol that is collision-free with low latency to improve on the disadvantages. First, in the proposed protocol, tree topology is constructed by exchanging packets between LoRa nodes and the sink node. During this period, a timeslot and channel are assigned to each tree link, over which LoRa nodes communicate with their parent node and which is collision-free with its neighbor nodes. After the tree construction period, LoRa nodes start data transmission using the timeslot and channel that they have already been assigned to in the tree constructio... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: local search, Particle Swarm Optimization, sea surface temperature, sea surface temperature prediction, similarity measure, support vector machine
The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is one of the key factors affecting ocean climate change. Hence, Sea Surface Temperature Prediction (SSTP) is of great significance to the study of navigation and meteorology. However, SST data is well-known to suffer from high levels of redundant information, which makes it very difficult to realize accurate predictions, for instance when using time-series regression. This paper constructs a simple yet effective SSTP model, dubbed DSL (given its origination from methods known as DTW, SVM and LSPSO). DSL is based on time-series similarity measure, multiple pattern learning and parameter optimization. It consists of three parts: (1) using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to mine the similarities in historical SST series; (2) training a Support Vector Machine (SVM) using the top-k similar patterns, deriving a robust SSTP model that offers a 5-day prediction window based on multiple SST input sequences; and (3) developing an improved Particle Swarm Optimization... March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bibliometric analysis, district heating, Energy Storage, energy transition, hybrid energy system, municipal energy system planning, Optimization, renewable energies, research trends
In the context of the energy transition, energy system planning is becoming increasingly relevant for decentralized systems. Motivated by the strong increase of publications on municipal energy system planning (MESP), these studies are subjected to a bibliometric analysis in this paper. The 1235 articles, which are based on the Web of Science database, are examined using the R-tool bibliometrix. The study shows that China is the most important contributor with 225 articles, followed by the USA (205) and Germany (120). Most cross-country collaborations were conducted between China and Canada, focusing mainly on uncertainties in MESP. Among the institutions, the North China Electric Power University is responsible for most articles (42). The core journals on MESP are Energy, Applied Energy, Energy Policy, Energies and Renewable Energy, which published 37% of the 1235 articles. Publications on MESP focus on renewable energies, optimization and hybrid energy systems. Furthermore, district... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: computed tomography, impurity effects, permeability characteristics, salt rock
Impure salt rock strata are extensively distributed in China, giving them great significance in the study of the physical properties of impure salt rock for the construction of underground gas storage in salt mines. To investigate the confining pressure and impurity effects on the mechanical properties and gas permeability characteristics of salt rock, permeability tests under hydrostatic confining pressure and conventional triaxial compression (CTC), on salt rock samples with different impurity contents, were carried out. The results demonstrate that the confining pressure effects cause an increase in triaxial compression strength, but a decrease in permeability. However, impurity enhances the bearing capacity and permeability of the salt rock; both rock strength and permeability increase with an increase in impurity content. Moreover, the broken salt rock specimens were analyzed after the CTC test using Computed Tomography (CT) equipment. To understand the relationships between pore... [more]
How Much Human-Caused Global Warming Should We Expect with Business-As-Usual (BAU) Climate Policies? A Semi-Empirical Assessment
Ronan Connolly, Michael Connolly, Robert M. Carter, Willie Soon
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: airborne fraction, business-as-usual, climate change mitigation, climate policies, climate sensitivity, Paris Agreement
In order to assess the merits of national climate change mitigation policies, it is important to have a reasonable benchmark for how much human-caused global warming would occur over the coming century with “Business-As-Usual” (BAU) conditions. However, currently, policymakers are limited to making assessments by comparing the Global Climate Model (GCM) projections of future climate change under various different “scenarios”, none of which are explicitly defined as BAU. Moreover, all of these estimates are ab initio computer model projections, and policymakers do not currently have equivalent empirically derived estimates for comparison. Therefore, estimates of the total future human-caused global warming from the three main greenhouse gases of concern (CO2, CH4, and N2O) up to 2100 are here derived for BAU conditions. A semi-empirical approach is used that allows direct comparisons between GCM-based estimates and empirically derived estimates. If the climate sensitivity to greenhouse... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, briquettes production, decision support system, Miscanthus, multilayer perceptron, willow
The biomass is regarded as a part of renewable energy sources (RES), which can satisfy energy demands. Biomass obtained from plantations is characterized by low bulk density, which increases transport and storage costs. Briquetting is a technology that relies on pressing biomass with the aim of obtaining a denser product (briquettes). In the production of solid biofuels, the technological as well as material variables significantly influence the densification process, and as a result influence the end quality of briquette. This process progresses differently for different materials. Therefore, the optimal selection of process’ parameters is very difficult. It is necessary to use a decision support tool—decision support system (DSS). The purpose of the work was to develop a decision support system that would indicate the optimal parameters for conducting the process of producing Miscanthus and willow briquettes (pre-comminution, milling and briquetting), briquette parameters (durability... March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: destress blasting, elastic deformation energy, mechanical model, rockburst, roof breakage, steeply inclined and extremely thick coal seam
The steeply inclined and extremely thick coal seams (SIETCS) under the condition of gob filling frequently suffer from the occurrence of rockbursts. Figuring out the mechanisms of rockbursts under this condition for taking targeted measures to mitigate rockburst hazards in SIETCS is of great significance. Using the typical SIETCS with an average dip angle of 87° at Wudong Coal Mine (WCM) as a case study, a mechanical model and elastic deformation energy (EDE) function of a “steeply inclined suspended roof structure” was developed, and the influence factors were analyzed by theoretical analysis. Simultaneously, the rockburst risk assessment was carried out based on the theory of a rockburst start-up. The pressure relief measures are optimized by comparing the pressure relief effects of three kinds of destress blasting schemes. The results indicate that the damage characteristics of rockburst are mainly floor heave, the sidewall’s inward deformation and roof subsidence. The damage degree... [more]

Keywords: fully developed flow, Galerkin-based integral (GBI) method, Petroleum, Poiseuille number, pressure gradient
Fluid flow in pipes plays an important role in different areas of academia and industry. Due to the importance of this kind of flow, several studies have involved circular cylindrical pipes. This paper aims to study fully developed internal laminar flow through a corrugated cylindrical duct, using the Galerkin-based integral method. As an application, we present a study using heavy oil with a relative density of 0.9648 (14.6 °API) and temperature-dependent viscosities ranging from 1715 to 13000 cP. Results for different fluid dynamics parameters, such as the Fanning friction factor, Reynolds number, shear stress, and pressure gradient, are presented and analyzed based on the corrugation number established for each section and aspect ratio of the pipe.
Effect of Cell Size on the Performance and Temperature Distribution of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells
Jae-Hyeong Yu, Chang-Whan Lee
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Fluid Dynamics, molten carbonate fuel cell, size effect, stack
Molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) are high-operating-temperature fuel cells with high efficiency and fuel diversity. Electrochemical reactions in MCFCs are exothermic. As the size of the fuel cells increases, the amount of the heat from the fuel cells and the temperature of the fuel cells increase. In this work, we investigated the relationship between the fuel cell stack size and performance by applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Three flow types, namely co-flow, cross-flow, and counter-flow, were studied. We found that when the size of the fuel cells increased beyond a certain value, the size of the fuel cell no longer affected the cell performance. The maximum fuel cell temperature converged as the size of the fuel cell increased. The temperature and current density distribution with respect to the size showed a very similar distribution. The converged maximum temperature of the fuel cells depended on the gas flow condition. The maximum temperature of the fuel cell decrea... [more]

Keywords: convective heat transfer, electronics cooling, heat sink, heat transfer enhancement, laser etching, microstructured surface
The efficient dissipation of localized heat flux by convection is a key request in several engineering applications, especially electronic ones. The recent advancements in manufacturing processes are unlocking the design and industrialization of heat exchangers with unprecedented geometric characteristics and, thus, performance. In this work, laser etching manufacturing technique is employed to develop metal surfaces with designed microstructured surface patterns. Such precise control of the solid-air interface (artificial roughness) allows to manufacture metal heat sinks with enhanced thermal transmittance with respect to traditional flat surfaces. Here, the thermal performance of these laser-etched devices is experimentally assessed by means of a wind tunnel in a fully turbulent regime. At the highest Reynolds number tested in the experiments ( R e L ≈ 16 , 500 ), elliptic scale-roughened surfaces show thermal transmittances improved by up to 81% with respect to heat sinks wi... March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multidimensional systems, nonlinear plants, particle filter, power system grid, sequential importance resampling, state estimation
In this paper, a new object in the form of a theoretical network is presented, which is useful as a benchmark for particle filtering algorithms designed for multivariable nonlinear systems (potentially linear, nonlinear, and even semi-Markovian jump system). The main goal of the paper is to propose an object that potentially can have similar to the power system grid properties, but with the number of state variables reduced twice (only one state variable for each node, while there are two in the case of power systems). Transition and measurement functions are proposed in the paper, and two types of transition functions are considered: dependent on one or many state variables. In addition, 10 types of measurements are proposed both for branch and nodal cases. The experiments are performed for 14 different, four-dimensional systems. Plants are both linear and highly nonlinear. The results include information about the state estimation quality (based on the mean squared error indicator) a... [more]

Keywords: harvesting system, hog fuel, olive groves, pruning, pruning supply chain, stationary chipper
Pruning residues could represent an important biomass resources for energy production. Only in Italy it has been estimated that an annual quantity of biomass of over 2600 kt of dry matter could be obtained from olive residues. Several machines developed for pruning harvesting are available in the market, most of which are tractor-driven, while limited knowledge is available on performance, quality of work and costs of harvesting logistics based on stationary chippers. The aim of the present paper is to analyze machine performance of a forestry stationary chipper applied to pruning harvesting for what concerns work productivity, quality of the comminuted product and harvesting operating costs. This system is actually applied by Fiusis Company, an Italian enterprise which manages a biomass power plant exclusively powered by olive trees’ pruning residues, and it has never been analyzed in literature. The results obtained showed consistent work productivity, which resulted the highest ever... [more]

Boning Wu, Xuesong Zhou, Youjie Ma
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC distribution network, disturbance compensation, LESO, sliding mode control, unit power rectifier
The DC distribution network has more advantages in power transmission, grid connection of distributed energy, and reliability of power supply when compared with AC distribution network, but there are still many problems in the development of DC distribution network. DC bus voltage control is one of the hot issues in the research of DC distribution network. To solve this problem, in this paper, a new type of sliding mode active disturbance rejection control (SMADRC) controller for AC/DC converters is designed and applied to the voltage outer loop. The linear extended state observer (LESO) can observe the state variables and the total disturbance of the system. The SMADRC is composed of a sliding mode controller, LESO, and disturbance compensator, which can compensate the total disturbance observed by LESO properly. Therefore, it improves the dynamic. At the same time, it can also reduce the system jitter that is caused by sliding mode controller. The state variables that are observed by... [more]

Luke Farrier, Richard Bucknall
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery systems, equivalent circuit model, power quality
The supply of pulsed power loads is considered a key driver for the integration of energy storage systems (ESSs) with warship power systems. ESSs are identified as a means to offer fast response dynamics capable of driving pulsed loads for sustained periods. This paper contributes a novel investigation into the performance of a Nickel Manganese Cobalt based lithium-ion battery system to supply laser directed energy weapon (LDEW) loads for future warship combat power systems using time-domain simulation methodology. The approach describes a second order Thévenin equivalent circuit battery model validated against a battery module of a type used in commercial marine ESS. The ability of the battery system to power LDEW loads peaking at 2 MW for up to periods of four minutes were simulated for beginning of life (BoL) and degraded conditions. The repeatability of the pulsed power supply with ESS is also reported. Simulation results show that Quality of Power Supply (QPS) is maintained within... [more]
The Impacts of a Building’s Thermal Mass on the Cooling Load of a Radiant System under Various Typical Climates
Rong Hu, Gang Liu, Jianlei Niu
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy conservation, energy simulation, radiant cooling system, thermal inertia, thermal mass
Cooling load is difficult to predict for a radiant system, because the interaction between a building’s thermal mass and radiation heat gain has not been well defined in a zone with a cooling surface. This study aims to reveal the effect of thermal mass in an external wall on the transmission load in a space with an active cooling surface. We investigated the thermal performances in a typical office building under various weather conditions by dynamic simulation with Energy-Plus. It was found that the thermal mass in the inside concrete layer had positives in terms of indoor temperature performance and energy conservation. The peak cooling load of the hydronic system decreases 28% in the proper operating state, taking into account the effect of the thermal mass in an external wall. Compared to the performances in zones with equivalent convective air systems (CASs), the peak cooling load and the accumulated load of the combined system (radiant system coupled by fresh air system) are hig... March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ARM processors, benchmark problems, electronic circuits, real-time simulation, thermal circuits, time–domain circuit simulation
Time−domain simulation of electronic and thermal circuits is required by a large array of applications, such as the design and optimization of electric vehicle powertrain components. While efficient execution is always a desirable feature of simulation codes, in certain cases like System-in-the-Loop setups, real-time performance is demanded. Whether real-time code execution can be achieved or not in a particular case depends on a series of factors, which include the mathematical formulation of the equations that govern the system dynamics, the techniques used in code implementation, and the capabilities of the hardware architecture on which the simulation is run. In this work, we present an evaluation framework of numerical methods for the simulation of electronic and thermal circuits from the point of view of their ability to deliver real-time performance. The methods were compared using a set of nontrivial benchmark problems and relevant error metrics. The computational efficiency of... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: building, environmental costs, green GDP, China, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty analysis
Energy consumption and pollutant emissions from buildings have caused serious impacts on the environment. Currently, research on building environmental costs is quite insufficient. Based on life cycle inventory of building materials, fossil fuel and electricity power, a calculating model for environmental costs during different stages is presented. A single-objective optimization model is generated by converting environmental impact into environmental cost, with the same unit with direct cost. Two residential buildings, one located in Beijing and another in Xiamen, China, are taken as the case studies and analyzed to test the proposed model. Moreover, data uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of key parameters, including the discount rate and the unit virtual abatement costs of pollutants, are also conducted. The analysis results show that the environmental cost accounts for about 16% of direct cost. The environmental degradation cost accounts for about 70% of the total environmental c... [more]
Effective Permeability of Multi Air Gap Ferrite Core 3-Phase Medium Frequency Transformer in Isolated DC-DC Converters

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: average air gap length, dc-dc power converters, gapped magnetic core, magnetic permeability, magnetizing inductance, medium frequency transformer
The magnetizing inductance of the medium frequency transformer (MFT) impacts the performance of the isolated dc-dc power converters. The ferrite material is considered for high power transformers but it requires an assembly of type “I” cores resulting in a multi air gap structure of the magnetic core. The authors claim that the multiple air gaps are randomly distributed and that the average air gap length is unpredictable at the industrial design stage. As a consequence, the required effective magnetic permeability and the magnetizing inductance are difficult to achieve within reasonable error margins. This article presents the measurements of the equivalent B(H) and the equivalent magnetic permeability of two three-phase MFT prototypes. The measured equivalent B(H) is used in an FEM simulation and compared against a no load test of a 100 kW isolated dc-dc converter showing a good fit within a 10% error. Further analysis leads to the demonstration that the equivalent magnetic permeabil... [more]

Keywords: adaptiveness, bioenergy, Denmark, Finland, Germany, policy mix, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, resilience, robustness, solar power, wind energy
Denmark, Germany, and Finland are countries that have emerged as technology leaders in key renewable energy fields—wind energy, solar power, and bioenergy. In this article, we dig into the policy trajectories of these countries and concentrate particularly on a phenomenon that is common for them all—the long-term commitment to promoting particular renewable energy (RE) technologies. Analyzing commitment, its causes and its consequences, can be considered important, as earlier findings show that long-term, consistent policy signals are a key for policy success. In this article, we point out that this ‘sticking’ to a RE technology has emerged and manifested in multiple ways in the case countries. Examples include relying on existing cultural capacities when navigating energy policy direction, strategically promoting scaling of technology markets to root new energy practices in society and developing energy policies as an extension of existing socio-technical structures. March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CO2 and N2 adsorption, fractal characteristics, Heterogeneity, longmaxi shale, micropores and mesopores, multifractal
To better understand the variability and heterogeneity of pore size distributions (PSDs) in the Longmaxi Shale, twelve shale samples were collected from the Xiaoxi and Fendong section, Sichuan Province, South China. Multifractal analysis was employed to study PSDs of mesopores (2−50 nm) and micropores (<2 nm) based on low-pressure N2/CO2 adsorption (LP-N2/CO2GA). The results show that the PSDs of mesopores and micropores exhibit a multifractal behavior. The multifractal parameters can be divided into the parameters of heterogeneity (D−10−D10, D0−D10 and D−10−D0) and the parameters of singularity (D1 and H). For both the mesopores and micropores, decreasing the singularity of the pore size distribution contributes to larger heterogeneous parameters. However, micropores and mesopores also vary widely in terms of the pore heterogeneity and its controlling factors. Shale with a higher total organic carbon (TOC) content may have a larger volume of micropores and more heterogeneous mesopo... [more]

Keywords: high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC), mathematical model, phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based proton exchange membranes, prediction of performance variation caused by manufacturing tolerances and defects, six-sigma product specification
The automated process of coating catalyst layers on gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells results inherently into a number of defects. These defects consist of agglomerates in which the platinum sites cannot be accessed by phosphoric acid and which are the consequence of an inconsistent coating, uncoated regions, scratches, knots, blemishes, folds, or attached fine particles—all ranging from μm to mm size. These electrochemically inactive spots cause a reduction of the effective catalyst area per unit volume (cm2/cm3) and determine a drop in fuel cell performance. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is presented that predicts performance variation caused by manufacturing tolerances and defects of the GDE and which enables the creation of a six-sigma product specification for Advent phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data analysis, demand response (DR), load profile clustering, k-means, targeting of customer
Due to the heterogeneity of demand response behaviors among customers, selecting a suitable segment is one of the key factors for the efficient and stable operation of the demand response (DR) program. Most utilities recognize the importance of targeted enrollment. Customer targeting in DR programs is normally implemented based on customer segmentation. Residential customers are characterized by low electricity consumption and large variability across times of consumption. These factors are considered to be the primary challenges in household load profile segmentation. Existing customer segmentation methods have limitations in reflecting daily consumption of electricity, peak demand timings, and load patterns. In this study, we propose a new clustering method to segment customers more effectively in residential demand response programs and thereby, identify suitable customer targets in DR. The approach can be described as a two-stage k-means procedure including consumption features and... [more]
