Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR): A Comprehensive Review of Topologies, Power Converters, Control Methods, and Modified Configurations
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control methods, distributed generation, dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), modified DVR configurations, power converter, power quality
Power quality is a pressing concern and of the utmost importance for advanced and high-tech equipment in particular, whose performance relies heavily on the supply’s quality. Power quality issues like voltage sags/swells, harmonics, interruptions, etc. are defined as any deviations in current, voltage, or frequency that result in end-use equipment damage or failure. Sensitive loads like medical equipment in hospitals and health clinics, schools, prisons, etc. malfunction for the outages and interruptions, thereby causing substantial economic losses. For enhancing power quality, custom power devices (CPDs) are recommended, among which the Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is considered as the best and cost-effective solution. DVR is a power electronic-based solution to mitigate and compensate voltage sags. This paper provides a thorough discussion and comprehensive review of DVR topologies based on operations, power converters, control methods, and applications. The review compares the sta... [more]

On the Performance of Night Ventilation in a Historic Office Building in Nordic Climate
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building energy simulation, historic buildings, IDA-ICE, night ventilation, Nordic climate, office buildings
The effect of mechanical night ventilation on thermal comfort and electricity use for cooling of a typical historic office building in north-central Sweden was assessed. IDA-ICE simulation program was used to model the potential for improving thermal comfort and electricity savings by applying night ventilation cooling. Parametric study comprised different outdoor climates, flow rates, cooling machine’s coefficient of performance and ventilation units’ specific fan power values. Additionally, the effect of different door schemes (open or closed) on thermal comfort in offices was investigated. It was shown that night ventilation cannot meet the building’s total cooling demand and auxiliary active cooling is required, although the building is located in a cold climate. Night ventilation had the potential in decreasing the percentage of exceedance hours in offices by up to 33% and decreasing the total electricity use for cooling by up to 40%. More electricity is saved with higher night ve... [more]

Multi-Label Learning for Appliance Recognition in NILM Using Fryze-Current Decomposition and Convolutional Neural Network
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: activation current, appliance recognition, Convolutional Neural Network, distance similarity matrix, fryze power theory, multi-label learning, Non-intrusive Load Monitoring, V-I trajectory
The advance in energy-sensing and smart-meter technologies have motivated the use of a Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), a data-driven technique that recognizes active end-use appliances by analyzing the data streams coming from these devices. NILM offers an electricity consumption pattern of individual loads at consumer premises, which is crucial in the design of energy efficiency and energy demand management strategies in buildings. Appliance classification, also known as load identification is an essential sub-task for identifying the type and status of an unknown load from appliance features extracted from the aggregate power signal. Most of the existing work for appliance recognition in NILM uses a single-label learning strategy which, assumes only one appliance is active at a time. This assumption ignores the fact that multiple devices can be active simultaneously and requires a perfect event detector to recognize the appliance. In this paper proposes the Convolutional Neural... [more]

Aircraft Propellers—Is There a Future?
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aircraft, flight efficiency, flight speed, propeller, turboprop
The race for speed ruled the early Jet Age on aviation. Aircraft manufacturers chased faster and faster planes in a fight for pride and capability. In the early 1970s, dreams were that the future would be supersonic, but fuel economy and unacceptable noise levels made that era never happen. After the 1973 oil crisis, the paradigm changed. The average cruise speed on newly developed aircraft started to decrease in exchange for improvements in many other performance parameters. At the same pace, the airliner’s power-plants are evolving to look more like a ducted turboprop, and less like a pure jet engine as the pursuit for the higher bypass ratios continues. However, since the birth of jet aircraft, the propeller-driven plane has lost its dominant place, associated with the idea that going back to propeller-driven airplanes, and what it represents in terms of modernity and security, has started a propeller avoidance phenomenon with travelers and thus with airlines. Today, even with the m... [more]

Economic Issues in Deep Low-Carbon Energy Systems
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: critical raw materials, land, merit order and competitive markets, renewable energy boundaries, speed of transition, transportation
The main interlinked challenges to achieve a low-carbon emission economy are analyzed. It is argued first that there are no obstacles to a free market working effectively with a high penetration of distributed Renewable Energies (RE), since intermittency has been overstated, and affordable storage solutions are available because of strong learning rates. Demand-side management policies are promising too, neither are there foreseeable boundaries to the availability of economically extractable photovoltaic and wind energies. A full 100% RE system may be more challenging though, partly because bioenergy, a key dispatchable source in most available RE roadmaps, clashes with growing food needs and reforestation to counter greenhouse gases emissions. Similarly, the green growth proposal is constrained by materials availability, mainly cobalt and phosphorus, which will also constrain the deployment of electric vehicles. Alternatively, the United Nations Human Development Index may be a more s... [more]

Complementarity between Combined Heat and Power Systems, Solar PV and Hydropower at a District Level: Sensitivity to Climate Characteristics along an Alpine Transect
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combined heat and power, run-of-the river hydropower, solar power, succeed indicators
Combined heat and power systems (CHP) produce heat and electricity simultaneously. Their resulting high efficiency makes them more attractive from the energy managers’ perspective than other conventional thermal systems. Although heat is a by-product of the electricity generation process, system operators usually operate CHP systems to satisfy heat demand. Electricity generation from CHP is thus driven by the heat demand, which follows the variability of seasonal temperature, and thus is not always correlated with the fluctuation of electricity demand. Consequently, from the perspective of the electricity grid operator, CHP systems can be seen as a non-controllable energy source similar to other renewable energy sources such as solar, wind or hydro. In this study, we investigate how ‘non-controllable’ electricity generation from CHP systems combines with ‘non-controllable’ electricity generation from solar photovoltaic panels (PV) and run-of-the river (RoR) hydropower at a district lev... Numerical Analysis of High-Altitude Inlet Air on Boundary Layer Flow Loss in an Aero-Engine Compressor
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: boundary layer, compressor, entropy increase, flow loss, high Mach number, similarity criterion
A numerical analysis is performed to explore the high altitude and high Mach flight on the effect of wall boundary layer loss in the compressor. The accuracy for solution results by the application of the similarity criterion and parameter definition of the air inlet is compared with the existing experimental test result. The results indicate that the radial adverse pressure gradient in the rotor domain gradually increases along the span direction and decreases as flight Mach number increases; meanwhile, the circumferential adverse pressure gradient on the pressure side of the rotor blade is correspondingly larger and less than that on the suction side. In particular, the entropy increase along the streamwise shows a decreasing trend and an increasing trend inside the hub and shroud wall boundary layers, respectively. At 2.1 Ma, the entropy increase in the rotor domains enhances by 24.36−27.80% inside the shroud boundary layer, relative to the hub boundary layer; however, it decreases... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: genetic algorithm (GA), global maxima (GM), incremental conductance (IC), local maxima (LM), maximum power point tracking (MPPT), photovoltaic (PV), proportional integral deferential (PID)
In this article, a novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller for the fast-changing irradiance of photovoltaic (PV) systems is introduced. Our technique utilizes a modified incremental conductance (IC) algorithm for the efficient and fast tracking of MPP. The proposed system has a simple implementation, fast tracking, and achieved steady-state oscillation. Traditional MPPT techniques use a tradeoff between steady-state and transition-state parameters. The shortfalls of various techniques are studied. A comprehensive comparative study is done to test various existing techniques against the proposed technique. The common parameters discussed in this study are fast convergence, efficiency, and reduced oscillations. The proposed method successfully addresses these issues and improves the results significantly by using a proportional integral deferential (PID) controller with a genetic algorithm (GA) to predict the variable step size of the IC-based MPPT technique. The system is d... [more]

Design, Selection and Application of Energy Recovery Device in Seawater Desalination: A Review
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy recovery device, pressure exchanger, recovery rate, specific energy consumption, turbine
In the seawater desalination system, the energy recovery system is a crucial part, as it consumes a lot of energy and plays a guiding role in the recovery efficiency. Therefore, in the energy recovery system, the recovery rate and energy consumption are the key factors to guide the system design. In order to make the energy recovery device achieve a high recovery rate under conditions of low energy consumption, the design and selection of each device in the system are particularly important. At the current stage, system matching optimization, device design optimization, and function objective optimization are widely used to improve the energy recovery system. In this paper, the design principle of the energy recovery integration system is analyzed, methods of reducing energy consumption and improving recovery efficiency are presented. The study provides guidance for the design and selection of energy recovery devices under different operating conditions.

A Design Method for Magnetically Coupled Resonant Coils Considering Transmission Objectives and Dimension Constraints
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dimension constraints, magnetic flux, magnetically coupled resonant coils, parameters design, the PTE and PDL calculation model
This paper proposes a coil design method for the magnetically coupled resonant wireless power transfer (MCR-WPT) system. Based on the Biot−Savart law, the magnetic flux density at the observation point was derived, and the magnetic flux of the observation plane generated by the exciting coil was deduced to build the calculation model of power transfer efficiency (PTE) and power delivered to the load (PDL). The PTE and PDL curves via coil parameters could be fitted in minutes using numerical calculation. The coil was designed according to transmission objectives and dimension constraints. In addition, the calculated PTE and PDL were compared with those from finite element analysis to verify the credibility of the method. Finally, the actual curves of PTE and PDL were achieved, which showed a strong positive correlation with the corresponding curves from the calculation model. The relative average deviations of PDL curves were less than 6.11%. Meanwhile, coils designed with the numerical... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: building envelope, environmental impact, house, LCA, thermal performance
The building envelope is critical to reducing operational energy in residential buildings. Under moderate climates, as in South-Western Europe (Portugal), thermal operational energy may be substantially reduced with an adequate building envelope selection at the design stage; therefore, it is crucial to assess the trade-offs between operational and embodied impacts. In this work, the environmental influence of building envelope construction with varying thermal performance were assessed for a South-Western European house under two operational patterns using life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. Five insulation thickness levels (0−12 cm), four total ventilation levels (0.3−1.2 ac/h), three exterior wall alternatives (double brick, concrete, and wood walls), and six insulation materials were studied. Insulation thickness tipping-points were identified for alternative operational patterns and wall envelopes, considering six environmental impact categories. Life-cycle results show that,... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: decentralized wind power, economic analysis, technical schemes, wind curtailment
Wind power technology is developing rapidly in China. Especially in the north of China, decentralized wind power (DWP) has developed rapidly. However, wind curtailment exceeds 4% of the gross generation, which has become an important obstacle restricting the development of DWP in 2019. Technical schemes are effective solutions to promote decentralized wind power consumption (DWPC). Moreover, there are few economic analyses of DWP projects with key technologies. This paper summarizes the typical technical schemes and analyzes the economy of a DWP grid-connected project with typical technical schemes by combining methods of the net present value (NPV) and real options (RO). It appears that the DWP project can be profitable with an NPV of about CNY 4.3721 million and an option value of CNY 16.6022 million in the case of a feed-in tariff of 0.34 CNY/kWh. Feed-in tariff and equipment investment costs are the most relevant parameters for economic feasibility according to the sensitivity anal... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: car charging, coil misalignment, coupling coefficient, efficiency, electrical vehicle, wireless power transfer
Although the wireless power transfer (WPT) system for electric vehicles (EVs) provides numerous advantages, there is still a low coupling coefficient and the misalignment between the primary coil and the secondary coil needs to be solved. In this paper, the transmission efficiency and transmitted power were calculated based on Series-Series (SS) compensation topology. The coupling coefficient is related to the coil parameters and misalignments. A simulation study was carried out to explore the variation in the coupling coefficient for different coil configurations under different air gaps and coil misalignments. Moreover, the influence of the internal parameters of the square coil on the coupling coefficient was further studied. Finally, this paper discusses the influence of ferrite cores with a square coil on the coupling coefficient. We provide theoretical estimates to predict tonal frequencies, which are used to identify the main physical mechanisms responsible for the tonal signature and for each configuration and enable the categorisation of the main tonal aeroacoustic sources of vertical axis turbines operating in close proximity. Namely, we identify wake, vortex, blade passing and boundary layer phenomena and provide estimates for the associated tonal frequencies, which are validated with simulations. In the far... [more]

Video Analysis of Pedestrian Movement (VAPM) under Different Lighting Conditions—Method Exploration
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: outdoor lighting, pedestrian, video analysis
When daylight hours are limited, pedestrians are dependent on appropriate outdoor lighting. Although new city lighting applications must consider both energy usage and pedestrian responses, current methods used to capture pedestrian walking behaviour during dark conditions in real settings are limited. This study reports on the development and evaluation of a video-based method that analyses pedestrians’ microscopic movements (VAPM—video analysis of pedestrian movements), including placement and speed, in an artificially lit outdoor environment. In a field study utilising between-subjects design, 62 pedestrians walked along the same path under two different lighting applications. VAPM accurately discriminated pedestrians’ microscopic movements in the two lighting applications. By incorporating methodological triangulation, VAPM successfully complemented observer-based assessments of pedestrians’ perceptions and evaluations of the two lighting applications. March 29, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: adjustable-speed pumped hydro, arbitrage, Genetic Algorithm, MATPOWER, regulation, ternary pumped hydro
With increasing renewable penetration and projected increase in natural disasters, the reliability and resiliency of a power system become crucial issues. As network inertia drops with increasing penetration of renewables, operators search for flexible resources that can help cope with a disruptive event or manage renewable intermittency. Energy storage is a solution, but the type of storage solution needs to be profitable to exist in the current and upcoming power markets. Advanced pumped-storage hydropower (PSH) is one solution that can help cope with such requirements, which will in turn help to increase the renewable penetration in the system. This paper qualitatively compares the revenue earning potential of PSH configurations, including, adjustable-speed PSH (AS-PSH) and ternary PSH (T-PSH) in comparison to conventional PSH (C-PSH) from the arbitrage and regulation markets, with and without the presence of wind penetration. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: building, carbon abatement, climate transition, CO2 emissions, construction, decarbonization, emissions reduction, heavy industry, roadmap, Supply Chain
Sweden has committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to net-zero by 2045. Around 20% of Sweden’s annual CO2 emissions arise from manufacturing, transporting, and processing of construction materials for construction and refurbishment of buildings and infrastructure. In this study, material and energy flows for building and transport infrastructure construction is outlined, together with a roadmap detailing how the flows change depending on different technical and strategical choices. By matching short-term and long-term goals with specific technology solutions, these pathways make it possible to identify key decision points and potential synergies, competing goals, and lock-in effects. The results show that it is possible to reduce CO2 emissions associated with construction of buildings and transport infrastructure by 50% to 2030 applying already available measures, and reach close to zero emissions by 2045, while indicating that strategic choices with respect to process tec... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dust accumulation, dust surface density, efficiency decrease, photovoltaic module
The aspect of dust accumulation on the surface of photovoltaic (PV) modules should be thoroughly understood in order to minimize possible obstacles affecting energy generation. Several elements affect the amount of pollutant gathered on the surface of a solar device, mainly its localization, which is irreversibly linked to factors such as annual rainfall, occasional snow coverage, or, in a dry climate, increased blow of dust during sandstorms and higher concentration of soil particles in desert areas. Other than weather conditions in the region, PV installation type also plays an important role as a more horizontal position is favorable for the accumulation of soil. The research carried out and presented in this paper was done for dust accumulated naturally on PV modules kept in outdoor conditions and dust artificially sieved onto the front glass cover of modules. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Biomass, combined heat and power generation (CHP), district heating, heat storage, Modelling, Simulation
The targets of global CO2 reduction outline the importance of decarbonizing the heating and cooling sector, which consume half of the final energy in the European Union (EU). Consequently, heating network operators must adapt to growing requirements for carbon neutrality. Energy system modeling allows the simulation of individual network compositions and regulations, while considering electricity market signals for a more efficient plant operation. The district heating model, programmed for this work, covers a measured heat demand with peak load boiler, biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant, and biomass heating plant supply. The CHP plant reacts to electricity prices of the European Power Exchange market and uses a long-term heat storage to decouple heat and electricity production. This paper presents the results of three annual simulation scenarios aimed at carbon neutrality for the analyzed heating network. Two scenarios achieve a climate-neutral system by replacing the p... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat recovery, Stirling engine, waste heat
Even though this discovery dates back to 1816, the greatest advancement in technology and understanding of Stirling-cycle devices has occurred in the last 50 years. Although their mass production is currently limited to special-purpose machines, its prospective use is in combination with renewable sources and indicates a potential for commercial purposes. The lack of commercial success, despite obvious advantages, is probably due to a lack of appropriate modeling techniques and theoretical predictions of what these devices can achieve. Nowadays the Stirling engine has found its use mainly in solar power plants, where it represents the only piston engine converting solar energy into mechanical and then electricity with relatively high efficiency. The Stirling engine also appears to be suitable for recovering waste heat, especially in heavy industry. Keywords: hydrate, phase transitions, statistical mechanics, thermodynamic properties
The formation of natural gas hydrates during processing and transport of natural has historically been one of the motivations for research on hydrates. In recent years, there has been much focus on the use of hydrate as a phase for compact transport of natural gas, as well as many other applications such as desalination of seawater and the use of hydrate phase in heat pumps. The huge amounts of energy in the form of hydrates distributed in various ways in sediments is a hot topic many places around the world. Common to all these situations of hydrates in nature or industry is that temperature and pressure are both defined. Mathematically, this does not balance the number of independent variables minus conservation of mass and minus equilibrium conditions. There is a need for thermodynamic models for hydrates that can be used for non-equilibrium systems and hydrate formation from different phase, as well as different routes for hydrate dissociation. In this work we first discuss a resid... [more]
