Soft Start-Up Control Strategy for Dual Active Bridge Converter with a Supercapacitor
Min-Soo Kim, Do-Hyun Kim, Dong-Keun Jeong, Jang-Mok Kim, Hee-Je Kim
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3-step soft start-up operation, dual active bridge (DAB) converter, phase shift, photovoltaic/energy storage system (PV/ESS), supercapacitor (SC)
Renewable energy needs are steadily on the rise. Bidirectional DC/DC converters are essential in charging and discharging various storage batteries, such as PV/ESS (photovoltaic/energy storage system). A dual active bridge (DAB) converter, in particular, transfers power in both directions by phase shift using a soiled state transformer (SST). To reduce switching inrush current in batteries under high voltages, a soft start-up is demonstrated during the initial switching operation. When a supercapacitor (SC) is used as a battery, the reverse power caused by the inrush current appears under high voltage at the DC-link side. This causes serious electrical damage to the PV/ESS’ boost converter and inverter. To suppress peak overshoot voltage and stabilize soft start-up transients, we propose a three-step soft start-up controller and algorithm for bidirectional DAB converter implementation at virtual ESS and UPS. The step-by-step control strategy by OLDC (open loop duty control), OLPSC (ope... [more]
Modeling Three-Dimensional Anisotropic Structures of Reservoir Lithofacies Using Two-Dimensional Digital Outcrops

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Junggar Basin, multiple-point geostatistics, parametric sensitivity analysis, Qingshuihe formation, reservoir lithofacies anisotropic structures model, simulation sequence, training image
Reservoir heterogeneity is a key geological problem that restricts oil and gas exploration and development of clastic rocks from the early to late stages. Existing reservoir heterogeneity modeling methods such as multiple-point geostatistics (MPS) can accurately model the two-dimensional anisotropic structures of reservoir lithofacies. However, three-dimensional training images are required to construct three-dimensional reservoir lithofacies anisotropic structures models, and the method to use reservoir heterogeneity model of fewer-dimensional to obtain a three-dimensional model has become a much-focused research topic. In this study, the outcrops of the second member of Qingshuihe Formation (K1q2) in the northwestern margin of the Junggar Basin, which are lower cretaceous rocks, were the research target. The three-dimensional reservoir heterogeneity model of the K1q2 outcrop was established based on the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) digital outcrops model and MPS techniques, and the... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, energy scheduling, information sharing, multi-agent system, multi-microgrid system
Regarding the different ownerships and autonomy of microgrids (MGs) in the distributed multi-microgrid (MMG) system, this paper establishes a multi-stage energy scheduling model based on a multi-agent system (MAS). The proposed mechanism enables a microgrid agent (MGA), a central energy management agent (CEMA), and a coordination control agent (CCA) to cooperate efficiently during various stages including prescheduling, coordinated optimization, rescheduling and participation willingness analysis. Based on the limited information sharing between agents, energy scheduling models of agents and coordinated diagrams are constructed to demonstrate the different roles of agents and their interactions within the MMG system. Distributed schemes are introduced for MG internal operations considering demand response, while centralized schemes under the control of the CCA are proposed to coordinate MGAs. Participation willingness is defined to analyze the MGA’s satisfaction degree of the matchmaki... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: generic model, IEC 61400-27, power system stability, voltage dip, wind turbine
Wind power plants depend greatly on weather conditions, thus being considered intermittent, uncertain and non-dispatchable. Due to the massive integration of this energy resource in the recent decades, it is important that transmission and distribution system operators are able to model their electrical behaviour in terms of steady-state power flow, transient dynamic stability, and short-circuit currents. Consequently, in 2015, the International Electrotechnical Commission published Standard IEC 61400-27-1, which includes generic models for wind power generation in order to estimate the electrical characteristics of wind turbines at the connection point. This paper presents, describes and details the models for wind turbine topologies Types 1 and 2 following IEC 61400-27-1 for electrical simulation purposes, including the values for the parameters for the different subsystems. A hardware-in-the-loop combined with a real-time simulator is also used to analyse the response of such wind t... [more]
Disturbance Observer-Based Offset-Free Global Tracking Control for Input-Constrained LTI Systems with DC/DC Buck Converter Applications
Kyunghwan Choi, Dong Soo Kim, Seok-Kyoon Kim
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC/DC buck converters, disturbance observer, input constraints, LTI systems, offset-free global tracking control
This paper presents an offset-free global tracking control algorithm for the input-constrained plants modeled as controllable and open-loop strictly stable linear time invariant (LTI) systems. The contribution of this study is two-fold: First, a global tracking control law is devised in such a way that it not only leads to offset-free reference tracking but also handles the input constraints using the invariance property of a projection operator embedded in the proposed disturbance observer (DOB). Second, the offset-free tracking property is guaranteed against uncertainties caused by plant-model mismatch using the DOB’s integral action for the state estimation error. Simulation results are given in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by applying it to a DC/DC buck converter.
Density Difference Grid Design in a Point-Mass Filter
Jakub Matoušek, Jindřich Duník, Ondřej Straka
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: nonlinear filtering, nonlinear system, point-mass method, state estimation
The paper deals with the Bayesian state estimation of nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems. The stress is laid on the point-mass filter, solving the Bayesian recursive relations for the state estimate conditional density computation using the deterministic grid-based numerical integration method. In particular, the grid design is discussed and the novel density difference grid is proposed. The proposed grid design covers such regions of the state-space where the conditional density is significantly spatially varying, by the dense grid. In other regions, a sparse grid is used to keep the computational complexity low. The proposed grid design is thoroughly discussed, analyzed, and illustrated in a numerical study.

Zhengqing Han, Shuai Li, Shuping Liu, Shibin Gao
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: all-parallel AT railway system, fault location, fault state matrix, feeding condition
The existing fault location methods for all-parallel autotransformer railway systems (AARS) have limitations because they are generally designed for several given feeding conditions. In alternate feeding conditions, the existing fault location methods do not work well and may have large errors. To solve this problem, we have proposed a generalized fault location scheme for AARS in this paper. After analyzing the fault characteristics of AARS, we classified the feeding conditions of the faulted section of AARS into three types and introduced the corresponding fault location methods. In order to identify the faulted section and its feeding condition, we first formed a switch state matrix based on the adjacency matrix and mapped the fault current distribution into a current state matrix, then we unified the two matrices into a fault state matrix to reflect the fault state of the AARS. Finally, a generalized fault location scheme was proposed based on a fault state matrix. The proposed sch... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy system model, energy transition, GIS, Optimization, South Africa, spatial clustering
The decarbonization of energy systems has led to a fundamental change in their topology since generation is shifted to locations with favorable renewable conditions. In planning, this change is reflected by applying optimization models to regions within a country to optimize the distribution of generation units and to evaluate the resulting impact on the grid topology. This paper proposes a globally applicable framework to find a suitable regionalization for energy system models with a data-driven approach. Based on a global, spatially resolved database of demand, generation, and renewable profiles, hierarchical clustering with fine-tuning is performed. This regionalization approach is applied by modeling the resulting regions in an optimization model including a synthesized grid. In an exemplary case study, South Africa’s energy system is examined. The results show that the data-driven regionalization is beneficial compared to the common approach of using political regions. Furthermor... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: embedded system, energy-management system, grid-connected, photovoltaic array, residential DC microgrid
The design and implementation of an energy-management system (EMS) applied to a residential direct current microgrid (DC-µG) is presented in this work. The proposed residential DC-µG is designed to provide a maximum power of one kilowatt by using two photovoltaic arrays (PAs) of 500 W, a battery bank (BB) of 120 V−115 Ah, a supercapacitor module of 0.230 F and a bidirectional DC−AC converter linked to the AC main grid (MG). The EMS works as a centralized manager and it defines the working operation mode for each section of the DC-µG. The operation modes are based on: (1) the DC-link bus voltage, (2) the generated or demanded power to each section of the DC-µG and (3) the BB’s state of charge. The proposed EMS—during the several working operation modes and at the same time—can obtain the maximum energy from the PAs, reduce the energy consumption from the main grid and keep the DC-link bus voltage inside a range of 190 V ± 5%. The EMS and local controllers are implemented by using LabVIE... [more]

Jose-Maria Delgado-Sanchez, Isidoro Lillo-Bravo
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery degradation, battery stress factors, feasibility, lead–acid battery, photovoltaic system
Most technoeconomic feasibility studies of photovoltaic (PV) systems with batteries are mainly focused on the load demand, PV system profiles, total system costs, electricity price, and the remuneration rate. Nevertheless, most do not emphasise the influence degradation process such as corrosion, sulphation, stratification, active material seeding, and gassing on battery lifetime, efficiency, and capacity. In this paper, it is analysed the influence of the degradation processes in lead−acid batteries on the technoeconomic analysis of PV systems with and without battery. Results show that Net Present Value (NPV), Payback Period (PBP), and Discounted PayBack Period (DPBP) have a heavy dependence on the assumptions about the value of the battery performance parameters according to its degradation processes. Results show NPV differences in the range from −307% to 740%, PBP differences in the range from 9% to 188%, and DPBP differences in the range from 0% to 211%.

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, graph clustering, key distribution, link security, wireless sensor networks
In recent times, the field of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has attained a growing popularity in observing the environment due to its dynamic factors. Sensor data are gathered and forwarded to the base station (BS) through a wireless transmission medium. The data from the BS is further distributed to end-users using the Internet for their post analysis and operations. However, all sensors except the BS have limited constraints in terms of memory, energy and computational resources that degrade the network performance concerning the network lifetime and trustworthy routing. Therefore, improving energy efficiency with reliable and secure transmissions is a valuable debate among researchers for critical applications based on low-powered sensor nodes. In addition, security plays a significant cause to achieve responsible communications among sensors due to their unfixed and variable infrastructures. Keeping in view the above-mentioned issues, this paper presents an energy-aware graph clu... [more]

Jong S. Park, Dong Wook Chang
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: composite, electrocatalysts, graphene, iron phthalocyanine, oxygen reduction reaction
Recently, the development of non-precious electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has become important in replacing currently employed platinum (Pt)-based catalysts. Although Pt-based catalysts exhibit satisfactory ORR performances, their high price, easy methanol/CO2 poisoning, and poor long-term stability significantly hamper the forward movement of fuel cell technology. Among the various candidates, graphene-supported iron phthalocyanine (FePc) composites have attracted great attention because of their unique advantages, including low cost, good dimensional stability, high durability, and tunable catalytic activity. In the composite catalyst, FePc molecules are immobilized on graphene via noncovalent or covalent interactions. In addition, two-dimensional graphene substrates can improve not only the electrical conductivity of the composite, but also the dispersion of FePc molecules, triggering a significant improvement in the catalytic properties of the composite cat... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ancillary services market, chance-constrained optimization, electric vehicles, risk management, strategic bidding
The adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) will revolutionize the storage capacity in the power system and, therefore, will contribute to mitigate the uncertainty of renewable generation. In addition, EVs have fast response capabilities and are suitable for frequency regulation, which is essential for the proliferation of intermittent renewable sources. To this end, EV aggregators will arise as a market representative party on behalf of EVs. Thus, this player will be responsible for supplying the power needed to charge EVs, as well as offering their flexibility to support the system. The main goal of EV aggregators is to manage the potential participation of EVs in the reserve market, accounting for their charging and travel needs. This work follows this trend by conceiving a chance-constrained model able to optimize EVs participation in the reserve market, taking into account the uncertain behavior of EVs and their charging needs. The proposed model, includes penalties in the event of a... [more]
A Two-Way Neutronics/Thermal-Hydraulics Coupling Analysis Method for Fusion Blankets and Its Application to CFETR

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFETR, fusion blanket, Neutronics/thermal-hydraulics Coupling
The China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) is a tokamak device to validate and demonstrate fusion engineering technology. In CFETR, the breeding blanket is a vital important component that is closely related to the performance and safety of the fusion reactor. Neutronics/thermal-hydraulics (N/TH) coupling effect is significant in the numerical analysis of the fission reactor. However, in the numerical analysis of the fusion reactor, the existing coupling code system mostly adopts the one-way coupling method. The ignorance of the two-way N/TH coupling effect would lead to inaccurate results. In this paper, the MCNP/FLUENT code system is developed based on the 3D-1D-2D hybrid coupling method. The one-way and two-way N/TH coupling calculations for two typical blanket concepts, the helium-cooled solid breeder (HCSB) blanket and the water-cooled ceramic breeder (WCCB) blanket, are carried out to study the two-way N/TH coupling effect in CFETR. The numerical results show that, compare... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, energy price, linear effect, nonlinear effect, panel quantile regression, panel threshold regression
The empirical conclusions regarding the relationship between energy price and energy efficiency are relatively mixed. This paper systematically examines the influence of energy price on energy efficiency in China based on data from 30 provinces between 2003 and 2017, using linear and nonlinear effect analysis. We found that the impact of energy price on energy efficiency in China was positive in general. However, there existed heterogeneous effects of energy price on energy efficiency in various regions, and the effect differed with differences in energy efficiency levels based on the panel quantile regression analysis. Finally, the nonlinear effect analysis based on the panel threshold model indicated that the effect of energy price on energy efficiency increased with the rise of the environmental regulation level and economic growth rate, while it decreased with the ascent of the degree of energy price distortion and economic development level. In particular, when the value of a regi... [more]

Keywords: data-driven, Granger causality, kernel principal component analysis, oscillation root cause diagnosis, solid oxide fuel cell, transfer entropy
The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a new energy technology that has the advantages of low emissions and high efficiency. However, oscillation and propagation often occur during the power generation of the system, which causes system performance degradation and reduced service life. To determine the root cause of multi-loop oscillation in an SOFC system, a data-driven diagnostic method is proposed in this paper. In our method, kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) and transfer entropy were applied to the system oscillation fault location. First, based on the KPCA method and the Oscillation Significance Index (OSI) of the system process variable, the process variables that were most affected by the oscillations were selected. Then, transfer entropy was used to quantitatively analyze the causal relationship between the oscillation variables and the oscillation propagation path, which determined the root cause of the oscillation. Finally, Granger causality (GC) analysis was used to v... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: heterogeneity, multifractal analysis, NMR measurements, pore structure, tight sandstone
Understanding the pore structure can help us acquire a deep insight into the fluid transport properties and storage capacity of tight sandstone reservoirs. In this work, a series of methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, casting thin sections, scanning electron microscope (SEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment and multifractal theory were employed to investigate the pore structure and multifractal characteristics of tight sandstones from the Taiyuan Formation in the southern North China Basin. The relationships between petrophysical properties, pore structure, mineral compositions and NMR multifractal parameters were also discussed. Results show that the tight sandstones are characterized by complex and heterogenous pore structure, with apparent multifractal features. The main pore types include clay-dominated micropores and inter- and intragranular dissolution pores. Multifractal parameters of sandstone samples were acquired by NMR and applied to quantitative... March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complex power, Equal Area Criterion, micro grid, out-of-step, power swing, smart grid, transient stability
Power quality and stability have become the most important issues in power system operations, Micro Grids, and Smart Grids. Sensitive equipment can be seriously damaged when exposed to unstable power swing conditions. An unstable system may cause serious damage to Micro Grid System elements such as generators, transformers, transmission lines, and so forth. Therefore, out-of-step detection is essential for the safe operation of a Micro Grid system. In general, Equal Area Criterion (EAC) is a method for evaluating the stability of Smart Grid systems. However, EAC can be performed only if it is possible to analyze the active power and generator angle. This paper presents an analysis of the trajectory of complex power using a mathematical model. The variation of complex power is analyzed using a mathematical method, and then the relationship between complex power and EAC is presented, and a simulation performed. Later, in part II, a novel out-of-step detection algorithm based on part I wi... [more]

Keywords: Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), Fuzzy Analytical Network Process (FANP), Fuzzy Theory, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar power plant
Following the recent development trend in the struggle for cleaning the earth’s environment, solar is the one of most promising area that can partially be used as a replaceable energy from non-renewable fuel sources. As such, it plays a significant role in protecting the environment from global warming. As solar power does not emit harmful gases into the atmosphere, its production, distribution, setup, and operation are vital should the production remain constant. Even solar energy waste emissions are small; when compared to current energy sources, the amount of harmful gases is negligible. This paper presented an integrated approach for site of solar plants by using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Fuzzy Analytical Network Process (FANP). Furthermore, these integrated methodologies, incorporated with the most relevant parameters of requirements for solar plants, are introduced. First, the paper considers an integrated hierarchical DEA and FANP model for the optimal geographical loc... [more]

Keywords: equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD), humidity, insulator, leakage current, non-soluble deposit density (NSDD), pollution, post-installation study
Among the main causes of outdoor insulation failures is their poor specifications in terms of leakage distances. This happens when the selected criteria are unable to cope with all the stresses imposed by the changes in environmental pollutions. Therefore, it is important for utilities to fully understand the actual pollution characteristics of the service environment in which the insulators are operating. In this paper, the pollution severity and performance of some 13.2 kV ceramic insulators, sampled in different areas of a Canadian aluminum factory, are assessed. The investigations were performed taking into account the influence of air humidity. Various characteristics were investigated to assess the pollution levels of the insulators, such as equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) and non-soluble deposit density (NSDD), surface resistance, and leakage current characteristics (density, 3rd harmonic amplitude, and phase). It was witnessed that the insulators, collected around the fa... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery electric vehicles, battery management, en-route recharging behavior, gasoline vehicles, mixed network equilibrium
With the rapidly increasing number of electric vehicle users, in many urbans transport networks, there are mixed traffic flows (i.e., electric vehicles and gasoline vehicles). However, limited by driving ranges and long battery recharging, the battery electric vehicle (BEV) drivers’ route choice behaviors are inevitably affected. This paper assumes that in a transportation network, when BEV drivers are traveling between their original location and destinations, they tend to select the path with the minimal driving times and recharging time, and ensure that the remaining charge is not less than their battery safety margin. In contrast, gasoline vehicle drivers tend to select the path with the minimal driving time. Thus, by considering BEV drivers’ battery management strategies, e.g., battery safety margins and en-route recharging behaviors, this paper developed a mixed user equilibrium model to describe the resulting network equilibrium flow distributions. Finally, a numerical example i... [more]

Keywords: heating rate, Jordan, kinetic parameters, oil shale, Omari formation, pyrolysis, thermogravimetric analysis
Oil shale is one of the alternative energies and fuel solutions in Jordan because of the scarcity of conventional sources, such as petroleum, coal, and gas. Oil from oil shale reservoirs can be produced commercially by pyrolysis technology. To optimize the process, mechanisms and rates of reactions need to be investigated. Omari oil shale formation in Jordan was selected as a case study, for which no kinetic models are available in the literature. Oil shale was analyzed using the Fischer assay method, proximate analysis (moisture, volatile, and ash), gross calorific value, elemental analysis (CHNS), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements. Non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis was applied to study the kinetic parameters (activation energy and frequency factor) at four selected heating rates (5, 10, 15, and 20 °C/min). When oil shale was heated from room temperature to 1100 °C, the weight loss profile exhibited three different zones: drying (devolatilization), pyrolysis, and miner... [more]

Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), pressure fluctuation, propeller turbine, tip-clearance size (TCS), tip-leakage vortex (TLV)
Unavoidable tip clearance between blade tip and casing shroud plays an important role in the performance and characteristics of a tidal propeller turbine. In this work, the tip-leakage vortex (TLV) induced in the end-wall region was numerically illustrated by using the shear-stress transport (SST) k−ω turbulence model at various flow conditions and different tip-clearance sizes (TCSs). The swirling strength criterion was employed to visualize the tip-leakage vortex trajectory and investigate vortex evolution according to clearance size change. Although TLV occurs in both design and off-design conditions, vortex intensity develops strongly under excess flow rate with increased tip gap. The extreme influence of TCS on the turbine’s generated power and efficiency was predicted in steady simulations for four TCS cases, namely, δ = 0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75%. With the extension of the tip gap, turbine performance was drastically reduced because of vigorous turbulent leakage flow combined wi... [more]
