Pressure Measurements for Monitoring CO2 Foam Pilots
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 EOR, CO2 foam, CO2 storage, pilot monitoring, pressure measurements, transient analysis
This study focuses on the use of pressure measurements to monitor the effectiveness of foam as a CO2 mobility control agent in oil-producing reservoirs. When it is applied optimally, foam has excellent potential to improve reservoir sweep efficiency, as well as CO2 utilization and storage, during CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes. In this study, we present part of an integrated and novel workflow involving laboratory measurements, reservoir modeling and monitoring. Using the recorded bottom-hole pressure data from a CO2 foam pilot study, we demonstrate how transient pressures could be used to monitor CO2 foam development inside the reservoir. Results from a recent CO2 foam pilot study in a heterogeneous carbonate field in Permian Basin, USA, are presented. The injection pressure was used to evaluate the development of foam during various foam injection cycles. A high-resolution radial simulator was utilized to study the effect of foam on well injectivity, as well as on CO2 mobi... [more]

A New Short Term Electrical Load Forecasting by Type-2 Fuzzy Neural Networks
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: electrical load forecasting, Machine Learning, recurrent fuzzy neural network, time series
In this study, we present a new approach for load forecasting (LF) using a recurrent fuzzy neural network (RFNN) for Kermanshah City. Imagine if there is a need for electricity in a region in the coming years, we will have to build a power plant or reinforce transmission lines, so this will be resolved if accurate forecasts are made at the right time. Furthermore, suppose that by building distributed generation plants, and predicting future consumption, we can conclude that production will be more than consumption, so we will seek to export energy to other countries and make decisions on this. In this paper, a novel combination of neural networks (NNs) and type-2 fuzzy systems (T2FSs) is used for load forecasting. Adding feedback to the fuzzy neural network can also benefit from past moments. This feedback structure is called a recurrent fuzzy neural network. In this paper, Kermanshah urban electrical load data is used. The simulation results prove the efficiency of this method for for... [more]

Design and Optimization of a Small-Scale Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Blade for Energy Harvesting at Low Wind Profile Areas
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blade design, low wind speed, power harvesting, Q-blade, small wind turbine
Wind turbine blades perform the most important function in the wind energy conversion process. It plays the most vital role of absorbing the kinetic energy of the wind, and converting it to mechanical energy before it is transformed into electrical energy by generators. In this work, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 4412 and SG6043 airfoils were selected to design a small horizontal axis variable speed wind turbine blade for harvesting efficient energy from low wind speed areas. Due to the low wind profile of the targeted area, a blade of one-meter radius was considered in this study. To attain the set objectives of fast starting time and generate more torque and power at low wind speeds, optimization was carryout by varying Reynolds numbers (Re) on tip speed ratios (TSR) values of 4, 5, and 6. The blade element momentum (BEM) method was developed in MATLAB programming code to iteratively find the best twist and chord distributions along the one-meter blade length for... [more]

Voltage Readjustment Methodology According to Pressure and Temperature Applied to a High Temperature PEM Fuel Cell
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: atmospheric pressure, design of experiments, Fuel Cells, high temperature PEMFC, Hydrogen, more electric aircraft, operating conditions, readjustment method
The operating conditions can have uncontrolled effects on the voltage of a High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC). For instance, the HT-PEMFC can be used at ambient pressure, i.e., without having a back pressure regulator. In this case, the variation in the atmospheric pressure directly affects pressures inside the fuel cell, which induces voltage variation. Moreover, in transient phases, several coupled phenomena can have an uncontrolled effect on the voltage. For example, following a change in the current operating point, thermal conditions in the fuel cell can vary, and the temperature stabilization then leads to a voltage variation. This article introduces a readjustment method for the fuel cell voltage to compensate for the effects of the pressure and temperature variations that are undergone and to decouple their effects. This methodology is based on the realization of a design of experiments to characterize the voltage sensitivity to pressure ([1; 1.5 bar... [more]

Which Determinants Matter for Working Capital Management in Energy Industry? The Case of European Union Economy
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cash conversion cycle, energy industry, European Union, liquidity, working capital management
The main purpose of the paper is to identify firm,- industry- and country-specific determinants of working capital management (WCM) in energy industry. The empirical research is based on 6122 EU companies operating in the years 2011−2018. The influence of internal factors on variables describing WCM (cash conversion cycle—CCC, financial liquidity—LIQ and level of working capital—WC) were identified. The factors included: size of the company (positive effect), its growth, tangibility and indebtedness (negative effect). Cash flow had a positive effect on CCC and a negative effect on LIQ and WC. The influence of industry-specific factors were also found. Companies applied similar strategies in CCC and LIQ management, following their industry averages. Measures of WCM decreased under the influence of an increase in average trade payables in the industry. Following country-specific factors were found to be significant: (i) growth of GDP and strength of legal rights had negative influence on... [more]

Performance Evaluation of Silicon and GaN Switches for a Small Wireless Power Transfer System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Gallium Nitride, GaN HEMT, inductive resonance, wireless power transfer (WPT)
In the last few years, the wide diffusion of rechargeable devices has fueled the research interest in wireless power transfer (WPT) technology that offers advantages such as safety, flexibility, and ease of use. Different standards have been developed over the years but a significant part of the global interest is focused on the inductive resonant wireless power transfer. By increasing the resonance frequency, an improvement in the transfer efficiency between transmit and receive coils is generally observed, at the expense, however, of an increase in losses in the switching devices that constitute the transmitting and receiving circuits. This study concerned the performance evaluation of a WPT transmitting circuit built using Gallium Nitride (GaN) or conventional silicon (Si) switching devices, to assess their specific contribution to the overall efficiency of the system. The overall performance of two circuits, respectively based on GaN HEMTs and Si MOSFETs, were compared at frequenci... [more]

Subject: Information Management
Keywords: edge computing, intelligent Power Grid System (PGS), PGS load, resource management
This research aims to minimize the unnecessary resource consumption by intelligent Power Grid Systems (PGSs). Edge Computing (EC) technology is used to forecast PGS load and optimize the PGS load forecasting model. Following a literature review of EC and Internet of Things (IoT)-native edge devices, an intelligent PGS-oriented Resource Management Scheme (RMS) and PGS load forecasting model are proposed based on task offloading. Simultaneously, an online delay-aware power Resource Allocation Algorithm (RAA) is developed for EC architecture. Finally, comparing three algorithms corroborate that the system overhead decreases significantly with the model iteration. From the 40th iteration, the system overhead stabilizes. Moreover, given no more than 50 users, the average user delay of the proposed delay-aware power RAA is less than 13 s. The average delay of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the other two algorithms. This research contributes to optimizing intelligent PGS in sma... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: control system, electrolyte synthesis, flow battery, vanadium flow battery, vanadium redox flow battery
The article deals with the urgent task of creating a technological and production basis for the development and serial production of energy storage systems with flow batteries and uninterruptible power systems based on them. Flow batteries are a highly efficient solution for long-term energy storage in critical and alternative energy facilities. The main advantage of the flow batteries is the ability to create a system with the required power and capacity without redundant parameters due to the fact that the characteristics of the system are regulated by independent blocks, as in a fuel cell. Among flow batteries, vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) are of particular interest, as they have a long service life. The main elements of a flow battery are the stack, which determines the power of the battery and its efficiency, and the electrolyte, which determines the energy capacity of the battery and its service life. A stand for testing the operating modes of the flow battery stack has b... [more]

This work is aimed at solving the problem of converting diesel power drives to diesel−hydrogen fuels, which are more environmentally friendly and less expensive alternatives to diesel fuel. The method of increasing the energy efficiency of diesel fuels has been improved. The thermochemical essence of using methanol as an alternative fuel to increase energy efficiency based on the provisions of thermotechnics is considered. Alternative methanol fuel has been chosen as the initial product for the hydrogen conversion process, and its energy value, cost, and temperature conditions have been taken into account. Calculations showed that the caloric effect from the combustion of the converted mixture of hydrogen H2 and carbon monoxide CO exceeds the effect from the combustion of the same amount of methanol fuel. Engine power and fuel energy were increased due to the thermochemical regeneration of engine exhaust gas heat. An experimental setup was created to study the operation of a converted... [more]

Surface Complexation Modelling of Wettability Alteration during Carbonated Water Flooding
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbonated water, CO2 utilization, improved oil recovery, surface complexation modelling, wettability alteration
CO2 capture and utilization is an effective tool in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and hence, combating global warming. In the present study, surface complexation modeling (SCM) with the geochemistry solver, PHREEQ-C, was utilized to predict the wettability alteration of minerals, sandstone reservoir rocks (SRR), and pseudo-sandstone rocks (PSR) and mineral mixtures during carbonated water (CW) injection. The bond products, which is defined as the product of the mole fraction of oppositely charged mineral and oil surfaces, were calculated to estimate the wettability preferences. For the studied fluid systems, the results from SCM predicted that albite and quartz minerals were strongly water-wet while calcite was strongly oil-wet with formation water (FW). When it came to clay minerals, illite and montmorillonite were more oil-wet than quartz and less oil-wet than calcite. During CW injection (CWI), the wettability preferences of dominant minerals (considering weight and surface area... [more]

The Effect of the Swiss CO2 Levy on Heating Fuel Demand of Private Real Estate Owners
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon tax, energy consumption, Fossil Fuel, household panel, policy evaluation, price elasticity, pseudo-panel, Switzerland, tax elasticity
To effectively mitigate climate change, it is crucial to better understand the reaction of fossil-fuel demand to price and tax changes, and more precisely to climate policy instruments such as a carbon levy. The Swiss CO2 levy on heating fuels was introduced in 2008 at CHF 12/tCO2eq, and was increased steadily up to CHF 84/tCO2eq during the period of 2016/2017. This paper investigated the effectiveness of the levy as an instrument to reduce heating fuel demand, and hence carbon emissions, of private real estate owners. The Swiss Household Budget Survey 2006−2017 constituted the main data source. Before−after and pseudo-panel regressions were used to capture the CO2 levy’s effects, and a large set of household characteristics, as well as climatic conditions, were controlled for. No significant effects in the first two policy periods of 2008−2013 were found. Power Hardware-in-the-Loop Test of a Low-Cost Synthetic Inertia Controller for Battery Energy Storage System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: ancillary services, distributed energy resources, fast frequency measurement, fast frequency regulation, legacy resources, microgrids, power hardware-in-the-loop, virtual inertia
In the last years, the overall system inertia is decreasing due to the growing amount of energy resources connected to the grid by means of power inverters. As a consequence, reduced levels of inertia can affect the power system stability since slight variations of power generation or load may cause wider frequency deviations and higher rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) values. To mitigate this trouble, end-user distributed energy resources (DERs) interfaced through grid-following inverters, if opportunely controlled, can provide additional inertia. This paper investigated the possibility of improving the control law implemented by a low-cost controller on remotely controllable legacy DERs to provide synthetic inertia (SI) contributions. With this aim, power hardware-in-the-loop simulations were carried out to test the capability of the proposed controller to autonomously measure frequency and RoCoF and provide SI actions by controlling an actual battery energy storage system.

Because electricity retailers must ensure that energy supply matches end-user demand, electricity that is not traded through bilateral contracts is typically traded in power exchanges which are subject to great price volatility. In Colombia, the spot price is a reflection of climate variability because approximately 70% of the country’s electricity is generated by large hydropower stations. In this study, we forecast 2018′s prices and calculated its corresponding purchase margins using the 2015 to 2017 bilateral contract prices for electricity plus power exchange price information and climate information. Our forecasts included climate uncertainty and evaluated two multi-period portfolio methods for deciding among three purchasing strategies: bilateral contracts in the regulated market, bilateral contracts in the non-regulated markets, and purchases in the power exchange. Thermal Analysis of Dual-Axis-Direction Hybrid Excitation Generator for Electric Vehicles
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dual-axis-direction, electric vehicle, hybrid excitation, lumped parameter thermal network, thermal analysis
Electric vehicle (EV) generators have characteristics of small volume and high power density, which leads to high temperature rise. The temperature rise will directly influence the service life and reliability of the generator, so thermal analysis of EV generators is necessary in machine design. This paper carries out thermal analysis of a dual-axis-direction hybrid excitation generator (DHEG) used in EVs. The lumped parameter thermal network (LPTN) method is used to build the three-dimensional thermal model of DHEG. Compared with finite element analysis, LPTN can significantly reduce the simulation time while ensuring a good accuracy. Then, the influence of heat dissipation rib on DHEG temperature rise is studied. The results prove that adding heat dissipation rib on the enclosure surface can effectively reduce the maximum temperature of DHEG.
