Optimal Scheduling of Energy Storage System Considering Life-Cycle Degradation Cost Using Reinforcement Learning
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: energy storage system, life-cycle cost, optimal scheduling, reinforcement learning
Recently, due to the ever-increasing global warming effect, the proportion of renewable energy sources in the electric power industry has increased significantly. With the increase in distributed power sources with adjustable outputs, such as energy storage systems (ESSs), it is necessary to define ESS usage standards for an adaptive power transaction plan. However, the life-cycle cost is generally defined in a quadratic formula without considering various factors. In this study, the life-cycle cost for an ESS is defined in detail based on a life assessment model and used for scheduling. The life-cycle cost is affected by four factors: temperature, average state-of-charge (SOC), depth-of-discharge (DOD), and time. In the case of the DOD stress model, the life-cycle cost is expressed as a function of the cycle depth, whose exact value can be determined based on fatigue analysis techniques such as the Rainflow counting algorithm. The optimal scheduling of the ESS is constructed consideri... [more]

Periglacial Landforms and Fluid Dynamics in the Permafrost Domain: A Case from the Taz Peninsula, West Siberia
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: common depth point method, fluid migration, gas chimneys, gas emission craters, Natural Gas, permafrost thickness, pingos, shallow transient electromagnetic method, taliks, upper part of the section
Most of the developing oil and gas fields in Russia are located in Arctic regions and constructed on permafrost, where recent environmental changes cause multiple hazards for their infrastructure. The blowing-up of pingos, resulting in the formation of gas emission craters, is one of the disastrous processes associated both with these external changes and, likely, with deep sources of hydrocarbons. We traced the channels of fluid migration which link a gas features reservoirs with periglacial phenomena associated with such craters with the set of geophysical methods, including common depth point and shallow transient electromagnetic methods, on an area of a prospected gas field. We found correlated vertical anomalies of acoustic coherence and electrical resistivity associated with gas chimneys in the upper 500−600 m of the section. The thickness of the ice-bonded permafrost acting as a seal for fluids decreased in the chimney zone, forming 25−50 m deep pockets in the permafrost base. T... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: modal analysis, noise and vibration, normal modes, NVH, synchronous reluctance machine
In this paper, an analysis of noise and vibration of a synchronous reluctance machine for EV applications is performed. The analyzed machine was designed for electric vehicle application. The noise and vibration of a synchronous reluctance machine were first estimated during simulations; next, the obtained results were validated during laboratory tests. The analyzed model of the machine was simplified and included only stator core as it was assumed to be the main source of the machine vibration and generated noise. To simulate the noise and vibration of the machine, multiphysics modeling of the machine was performed. Laboratory tests proved the correctness of performed simulations. The obtained results allowed us to investigate the influence of the machine’s operating point on the generated noise and vibration. The frequency of the magnetic radial forces were proven to be the dominant factor in noise generation. The influence of the load and current angle on the machine’s noise and vib... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans, solid refused fuel, stack, waste heat boiler
Incineration plants using solid refused fuel (SRF) should control their air pollution materials to minimize environmental impact. This study evaluated the emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/dibenzofurans (PCDD/DFs) congener patterns in seven commercial incineration plants in Korea using SRF and biomass SRF (bio-SRF). We examined the reduction rate differences of PCDD/DFs, depending on the air pollutant control device. All seven incineration plants sufficiently managed their dioxin emissions. However, both SRF and bio-SRF incineration plants showed active chlorination reactions and resulted in a large amount of highly chlorinated dioxins. The average dioxin concentration was 0.02 ng international toxic equivalency quantity (I-TEQ)/Sm3. Ratios of 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF and 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDF were high in the waste heat boilers of both SRF and bio-SRF incineration plants. Experimental Assessment of the Thermal Conductivity of Basalt Fibres at High Temperatures
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: basalt fibre, district heat network, heat losses, thermal conductivity, thermal insulation, thermogravimetry
This paper investigates fibrous thermal insulation materials of various densities to assess the change in their thermophysical properties at high temperatures. The thermal conductivity of fibrous thermal insulation materials is discussed as a function of the temperature in the range from 50 °C to 500 °C. It is shown that the thermal insulating properties depend not only on the physical properties of the material (e.g., density or diameter of fibres), but also on the geometric parameters of the structure and on the orientation of the fibres. The influence of high temperatures on the mass change of fibrous materials associated with the burnout of synthetic binders is shown. These features should be taken into account during the design of thermal insulation operating at high temperatures to provide the optimal selection of the material and to guarantee the stability of their thermal properties.

The Interaction between In-Cylinder Turbulent Flow and Flame Front Propagation in an Optical SI Engine Measured by High-Speed PIV
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flame front, high-speed PIV, ignition, in-cylinder flow
The relationship between the flow field and flame propagation is essential in determining the dynamics and effects of turbulent flow in an optical SI engine. In this study, high turbulence flow at stable operations was achieved using 12,000 rpm engine speed, 60 kPa absolute intake pressure, 14.7 A/F, and 15 deg. BTDC spark timing. The turbulent flow field and flame propagation interplay were analyzed through the simultaneous high-speed PIV measurements of the in-cylinder flow and flame front propagation under firing conditions. The intensity of the seeder used was optimized by changing the crank angle. Successful simultaneous detection of the flame front and turbulent flow was demonstrated. Strong turbulence was produced at the flame front simultaneously with the flame movement. After ignition timing, the flame accelerated in the unburned region, and a vital turbulence region occurred.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building energy consumption, glazing system, heat transfer simulation, spectral selective absorption film, thermal parameters
Spectral selective absorption film (SSAF), a solar control film, has a special energy-saving mechanism. In the previous studies of SSAF coated glazing systems, thermal parameters (global thermal transmittance (U) and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)) calculated by traditional algorithms were not verified. In order to evaluate the energy-saving effect of SSAF coated glazing systems accurately, U and the SHGC were calibrated and then used for energy consumption simulation. Firstly, the simulation models of the heat transfer process of SSAF coated glazing systems were established by COMSOL Multiphysics, considering simplified linear attenuation of radiative transfer. After being validated, the simulation models were used for the calibration of U and SHGC by the Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) model. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: combinatorial dynamic encoding algorithm for searches, hybrid energy system, Optimization, power
This study proposes a computational design method for determining a hybrid power system’s sizing and ratio values that combines the national electric, solar cell, and fuel cell power sources. The inequality constraints associated with the ranges of power storage exchange and the stored energy are reflected as penalty functions in the overall cost function to be minimized. Using the energy hub model and the actual data for the solar cell power and the load of the residential sector in one Korean city for one hundred days, we optimize the ratio of fuel cell energy and solar cell energy to 0.46:0.54 through our proposed approach. We achieve an average cost-reduction effect of 19.35% compared to the cases in which the fuel-cell energy ratio is set from 0.1 to 0.9 in 0.1 steps. To optimize the sizing and the ratio of fuel-cell energy in the hybrid power system, we propose the modified version of the univariate dynamic encoding algorithm for searches (uDEAS) as a novel optimization method. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: deep learning techniques, electricity theft detection, gated recurrent unit, long short term memory, machine learning techniques, smart grids, theft attacks
Electricity theft is one of the challenging problems in smart grids. The power utilities around the globe face huge economic loss due to ET. The traditional electricity theft detection (ETD) models confront several challenges, such as highly imbalance distribution of electricity consumption data, curse of dimensionality and inevitable effects of non-malicious factors. To cope with the aforementioned concerns, this paper presents a novel ETD strategy for smart grids based on theft attacks, long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) called TLGRU. It includes three subunits: (1) synthetic theft attacks based data balancing, (2) LSTM based feature extraction, and (3) GRU based theft classification. GRU is used for drift identification. It stores and extracts the long-term dependency in the power consumption data. It is beneficial for drift identification. In this way, a minimum false positive rate (FPR) is obtained. This study presents a fast terminal synergetic control (FTSC) scheme to investigate the nonlinear control problem of permanent magnet vernier generator (PMVG)-based variable-speed wind energy conversion systems (WECSs). In wind turbines, better speed tracking and fast dynamic behavior is required to achieve the maximum power extraction. Efficient Plasma Technology for the Production of Green Hydrogen from Ethanol and Water
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: discharge, plasma, reforming
This study concerns the production of hydrogen from a mixture of ethanol and water. The process was conducted in plasma generated by a spark discharge. The substrates were introduced in the liquid phase into the reactor. The gaseous products formed in the spark reactor were hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, acetylene, and ethylene. Coke was also produced. The energy efficiency of hydrogen production was 27 mol(H2)/kWh, and it was 36% of the theoretical energy efficiency. The high value of the energy efficiency of hydrogen production was obtained with relatively high ethanol conversion (63%). In the spark discharge, it was possible to conduct the process under conditions in which the ethanol conversion reached 95%. However, this entailed higher energy consumption and reduced the energy efficiency of hydrogen production to 8.8 mol(H2)/kWh. Hydrogen production increased with increasing discharge power and feed stream. However, the hydrogen concentration was very high und... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: ANSYS, FEM, ferromagnetic side plates, magnetic blow-out force, MCB
The paper presents a modern method of computer modeling, concerning the low-voltage extinguishing chambers employed in modular apparatuses. The focus was put on presenting the phenomenon of increasing the blow-out, through the use of ferromagnetic plates, dividing the electric arc inside the electrical apparatus. The use of ferromagnetic material for the production of extinguishing chambers results in the distortion of the magnetic field generated by the electric arc. This creates a magnetic force that draws the arc towards the plate area of the extinguishing chamber. The authors presented a modern tool for the analysis of physical phenomena inside the extinguishing chamber. Defining and Specifying Design Considerations for Distribution Transformers in Large-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Plants
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distribution transformers, finite element analysis (FEA), harmonics, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar photovoltaic (PV)
In the new era of the renewable energy market in South Africa, there is a knowledge gap in the technical standards relating to distribution transformers, which are exclusively intended to serve in large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) applications. The problem arises from the reality that these transformers are compelled to facilitate an environment with a potentially high risk of an unacceptable level of harmonics and distortion. What manufacturers currently need is a comprehensive transformer specification for DT transformers in PV applications, as the standards currently in use for regular transformers have so far proven to be inadequate. The latter triggers the need for this work to contribute to the advancement of this knowledge gap by mapping a comparative analysis of defining and specifying the design considerations for solar PV transformers. Initially, the computation of the various transformer losses at multifaceted active-part structures under normal conditions by employing the... [more]

A Novel Polarity Correction Method Developed on Cross Correlation Analysis for Downhole Migration-Based Location of Microseismic Events
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cross correlation analysis, hydraulic fracturing, microseismic events, migration-based location, polarity correction
Migration-based approaches depending on waveform stacking are generally used to locate the microseismic events in hydro-fracturing monitoring. A simple waveform stacking with polarity correction normally provides better results than any of the absolute value-based methods. However, the existing polarity estimation method based on cross correlation analysis selects only individual waveform as a reference waveform, which may affect the precision of migration-based methods. Therefore, a novel polarity correction method based on cross correlation analysis is introduced for a migration-based location in order to accurately locate the microseismic events in a borehole system. The proposed method selects all waveforms from one event having high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as corresponding reference waveforms, instead of only selecting a single high SNR waveform from one target event as the corresponding reference waveform. A Comprehensive Analysis of the Risks Associated with the Determination of Biofuels’ Calorific Value by Bomb Calorimetry
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biorefinery, calorific value, calorimetry, CHP, fair pricing, moisture content, repeatability, reproducibility, uncertainty, wood biomass
Two of the most commonly used solid biomass sources for fuel are wood chips and wood pellets. The calorific value and the moisture content of those biofuels determine the efficiency of the CHP and the biorefinery plants. Therefore, with the increased shift towards a biobased economy, the biomass cost and its physical properties must be precisely determined. Most of the current standards are lacking and provide neither enough details about the issues caused by the biomass heterogeneity nor with the variation in experimental practice. Phenomena such as data scattering, poor repeatability and wide uncertainty, are mostly observed during the measurements of the calorific value and the moisture content. To overcome such issues, an interlaboratory comparison between three national metrology institutes using bomb calorimetry has taken place. The comparison helped to identify the root causes behind the poor reproducibility of the wood samples. Factors such as the equilibrium moisture content o... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distribution transformers, hotspot temperature, Solar Photovoltaic
In South Africa, distribution transformers (DTs) facilitating solar photovoltaic applications represent the highest percentage of total ownership cost investment for independent power producers (IPPs). One of the most indispensable variables that regulate DTs’ operational life span is the hotspot temperature. The prevailing analytical approaches designated to guesstimate the transformer thermal necessities were fathered in accordance with the conservative foundation that an electrical transformer is prone to uniform mean daily and monthly peak loads. In order to appropriately puzzle out the transformer thermal necessities, the formation of a more detailed thermal model that operates with real-time contorted cyclic loading, ambient air temperature, and the intrinsic characteristics of the transformer in-service losses is required.
