Diagnostics on the Basis of the Frequency-Temperature Dependences of the Loss Angle Tangent of Heavily Moistured Oil-Impregnated Pressboard
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: FDS method, insulation of transformers, moisture, oil, oil-impregnated pressboard, transformer diagnostics, transformer temperature
The aim of this study was to perform precision measurements of the frequency-temperature dependences of the loss angle tangent of the liquid-solid composite with the FDS Dirana meter. The composite consisted of heavily moistered oil-impregnated pressboard. The moisturization of the pressboard occurred in a manner as close as possible to the process of wetting the insulation in power transformers to a moisture content of (5.0 ± 0.2) wt. %. This value of moisture content was chosen because exceeding this value can lead to transformer failure. The measuring temperature range was from 293.15 K (20 °C) to 333.15 K (60 °C), with a step of 8 K. The measuring frequency range was 0.0001 Hz to 5000 Hz. It was observed that the shape of the frequency dependence of the loss angle tangent for a moisture content of 5.0 wt. % does not depend on the value of the measuring temperature. An increase in temperature leads to a shift of the waveforms into the higher frequency region. This is associated with... [more]

Research on Fault-Tolerant Operation Strategy of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with Common DC Bus Open Winding Phase-Breaking Fault
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decoupled modulation, fault-tolerant control, open winding permanent magnet synchronous motor, phase break fault, zero-sequence current
In some key areas, fault-tolerant control is usually needed in order to enable the motor to operate continuously in fault mode. Given that it is difficult to detect the zero-sequence current of the open winding permanent magnet synchronous motor after the phase break fault occurs, the traditional zero-sequence current suppression strategy is no longer applicable after the phase break fault occurs. Therefore, a zero-sequence current suppression strategy for a common DC bus under a phase break fault is proposed in this paper. By establishing the mathematical model between the current component in the synchronous coordinate system and the current component and the zero-sequence current in the static coordinate system, the relationship between the non-fault phase current and the zero-sequence current in the open phase fault is analyzed. A method of suppressing the zero-sequence current by using proportional integral double resonance in a zero-sequence current control loop is proposed. In a... [more]

as a New Biomass Source for Biogas Production
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, biomass characteristics, biomethane, silage, willow-leaf sunflower
Renewable energy is becoming a widely discussed topic in the European Union (EU), due to a desire to reduce the negative effects of fossil fuels on climate change and biodiversity. About 60% of the total renewable energy produced in the EU is derived from biomass. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an important pathway to convert biomass into biogas and then into bioenergy. Helianthus salicifolius is a perennial plant, whose biomass can serve as a co-substrate in biogas plants. Biomass composition, in addition to the biomethane and biogas potential, were investigated in raw green biomass and silage obtained from Helianthus salicifolius plants grown under different types (mineral and organic) and doses (0, 85, 170 kg N ha−1) of nitrogen fertilization. The biomethane production efficiency from Helianthus salicifolius was recorded for 25 days and found to range on average between 169.4 NL kg−1 VS for raw biomass and 193.2 NL kg−1 VS for silage. It follows from the current study that ensiling inc... [more]

Effects of Ethanol Admixtures with Gasoline on Fuel Atomization Characteristics Using High-Pressure Injectors
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ethanol admixture, fuel atomization quality, high-pressure injectors, injector deposits, optical measurements of fuel atomization, SI combustion engine
Correct fuel atomization is an important parameter in the process of preparing a combustible mixture. Distortions of the atomization can lead to unfavorable effects in the combustion process. This paper presents an analysis of the fuel atomization characteristics of high-pressure fuel injector tests. Optically tested injectors were previously tested in a 48 h engine test carried out in accordance with the CEC F-113-KC procedure, using alternative fuels with ethanol blends. As a result of engine tests on fuels containing various amounts of ethanol admixture, the injectors became contaminated. The effect of the deposits on the geometric atomization indicators was determined. This paper focuses on analyzing the area of the atomized spray in a constant volume chamber at different parameters, reflecting real operating conditions. We found that the addition of ethanol (20%) increases the observed spray area for all test points. Complementing the quantitative results is a qualitative analysis... [more]

Analysis of the Operation of Cascade Current Transformers for Measurements of Short-Circuit Currents with a Non-Periodic Component with a Large Time Constant of Its Decay
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: cascade current transformers, finite element method, short-circuit current measurements, transient state
Simulations of emergency states and tests of resistance of electrical devices to emergencies are performed in specialized high-power laboratories, the so-called short-circuit laboratories. For most electrical power devices, such measurements are required by international standards. The basic equipment of short-circuit testing laboratories consists of current transformers for measuring short-circuit currents. These transformers should not only enable the accurate conversion of sinusoidal currents—which is typical for conventional current transformers, but also asymmetrical short-circuit currents containing an aperiodic component, which classic current transformers cannot reproduce. Therefore, manufacturers and designers try to meet the market demands and design these special class 0.2 current transformers. To meet the high technical requirements, the field-circuit method with three-dimensional space−time analysis of electromagnetic fields was used during design, considering physical phe... [more]

Influence of a Cooling System on Power MOSFETs’ Thermal Parameters
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cooling systems, measurements, power MOSFETs, power semiconductor devices, self-heating, thermal parameters, thermal phenomena, thermal resistance, transient thermal impedance
In the current paper, an analysis of the influence of cooling system selection on the thermal parameters of two thermally coupled power MOSFETs is presented. The required measurements of the thermal parameters were performed using the indirect electrical method at different values of power dissipated in the investigated transistors and various supply conditions for the active parts of their cooling systems. The results of the investigations are analysed and discussed. Functions modelling the observed dependences of thermal parameters of the investigated MOSFETs on the power that was dissipated in them as well as the supply conditions of the active parts of their cooling systems are proposed. A good agreement between the results of the measurements and the computations was obtained. It is shown that the use of active cooling systems makes it possible to reduce the value of the thermal resistance of the tested transistor up to 20 times. March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: DC charging, electric vehicle charging station, harmonics, power quality, supraharmonics, TDD, THD, V2G
Bidirectional electric vehicle supply equipment and charging stations (EVSE) offer new business models and can provide services to the electrical grid. The smart grid lab in Vienna gives unique testing possibilities of future smart grids, as different type of electrical equipment can be operated at a reconstructed, well-known distribution grid. In this work the harmonic and supraharmonic emissions of a bidirectional EVSE are measured according to IEC61000-4-7 and IEC61000-4-30 Ed3 standard as well as the high-frequency grid impedance. In addition, the efficiency and the power factor are determined at various operating points. Although THDi at nominal power (10 kW) is very low and the efficiency and power factor is very high, at low power levels the opposite situation arise. Supraharmonic emissions remain stable independent of the charging/discharging power, and both wideband and narrowband emissions occur. The additional capacitance when connecting the EVSE impacts the high-frequency g... [more]

Fluid-Structure Interaction Analysis of a Competitive Car during Brake-in-Turn Manoeuvre
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: car dynamics, cornering, coupled analysis, FSI, vehicle aerodynamics
The relationship between the presented work and energy conservation is direct and indirect. Most of the literature related to energy-saving focuses on reducing the aerodynamic drag of cars, which typically leads to the appearance of vehicle motion instabilities at high speeds. Typically, this instability is compensated for by moving aerodynamic body components activated above a certain speed and left in that position until the vehicle speed drops. This change in vehicle configuration results in a significant increase in drag at high velocities. The presented study shows a fully coupled approach to fluid−structure interaction analyses of a car during a high-speed braking-in-turn manoeuvre. The results show how the aerodynamic configuration of a vehicle affects its dynamic behaviour. In this work, we used a novel approach, combining Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis with the Multibody Dynamic System. March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Dynamic Inductive Power Transfer, frequency control, series-series compensation network, state machine, voltage copying
Electrical Vehicles (EVs) have gained popularity in recent years in the automotive field. They are seen as a way to reduce the CO2 footprint of vehicles. Although EVs have witnessed significant advancement in recent years, they still have two major setbacks: limited autonomy and long recharging time. Dynamic Inductive Power Transfer (DIPT) systems permit charging EVs while driving, provide unlimited autonomy, and eliminate stationary charging time and lower battery dependency. Multiple transmitters are required to achieve DIPT; thus, dealing with transient phases is essential because every time a receiver crosses over from one transmitter to another, it experiences a new transient phase. This article presents a novel control strategy for multi-transmitter DIPT systems that ensures a continuous and stable power transfer to a moving EV. The proposed control strategy eliminates drop and inrush currents during transient phases. The control integrates a soft start feature and a degraded ope... [more]

Multi-Sensor Data Fusion Approach for Kinematic Quantities
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: digital signal processing, multi-channel systems, sensor data fusion
A theoretical framework to implement multi-sensor data fusion methods for kinematic quantities is proposed. All methods defined through the framework allow the combination of signals obtained from position, velocity and acceleration sensors addressing the same target, and improvement in the observation of the kinematics of the target. Differently from several alternative methods, the considered ones need no dynamic and/or error models to operate and can be implemented with low computational burden. In fact, they gain measurements by summing filtered versions of the heterogeneous kinematic quantities. In particular, in the case of position measurement, the use of filters with finite impulse responses, all characterized by finite gain throughout the bandwidth, in place of straightforward time-integrative operators, prevents the drift that is typically produced by the offset and low-frequency noise affecting velocity and acceleration data. A simulated scenario shows that the adopted metho... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: coal-fired power plant, grey wolf optimizer, load dispatch, multiobjective optimization, nondominated sorting
Coal-fired power plants are widely used to achieve a power balance in grids with renewable energy, which leads to new requirements for speediness in load dispatch. This paper presents a nondominated-sorting grey wolf optimizer algorithm (NSGWO) for the multiobjective load dispatch of coal-fired power plants that employed efficient nondominated sorting, a reference-point selection strategy, and a simulated binary crossover operator. The optimization results of the benchmark functions indicated that the NSGWO algorithm had a better accuracy and a better distribution than the traditional multiobjective grey wolf optimizer algorithm. Regarding the load dispatch of economy, environmental protection, and speediness strategies, the NSGWO had the best performance of all the simulated algorithms. The optimal-compromise solutions of the economy and speediness strategies of the NSGWO algorithm had a good distribution, which elucidated that this novel algorithm was favorable to allowing coal-fired... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD analysis, Hydrogen, methane–hydrogen, micro gas turbine
The use of hydrogen in small scale gas turbines is currently limited by several issues. Blending hydrogen with methane or other gaseous fuels can be considered a low medium-term viable solution, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, only small amounts can be mixed with methane in premixed combustors, due to the risk of flashback. The aim of this article is to investigate the injection of small quantities of steam as a method of increasing the maximum permissible hydrogen content in a mixture with methane. The proposed approach involves introducing the steam directly into the combustion chamber into the main fuel feeding system of a Turbec T100. The study is carried out by means of CFD analysis of the combustion process. A thermodynamic analysis of the energy system is used to determine boundary conditions. Subject: Environment
Keywords: biogas plant, digestate, large-scale installation, microalgae, photobioreactor
Microalgae-based technologies have huge potential for application in the environment sector and the bio-energy industry. However, their cost-efficiency has to be improved by drawing on design and operation data for large-scale installations. This paper presents a technical concept of an installation for large-scale microalgae culture on digestate liquor, and the results of a pilot-scale study to test its performance. The quality of non-treated digestate has been shown to be insufficient for direct use as a growth medium due to excess suspended solids, turbidity, and organic matter content, which need to be reduced. To that end, this paper proposes a system based on mechanical separation, flotation, and pre-treatment on a biofilter. The culture medium fed into photobioreactors had the following parameters after the processing: COD—340 mgO2/dm3, BOD5—100 mgO2/dm3, TN—900 mg/dm3, and TP—70 mg/dm3. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bidirectional buck–boost converter, hybrid energy storage system, Li-ion battery, pulsed load, supercapacitor
With greater power density, a hybrid power source that combines supercapacitors and batteries has a wide range of applications in pulse-operated power systems. In this paper, a supercapacitor/battery semi-active hybrid energy storage system (HESS) with a full current-type control strategy is presented.
