Interpretation of Eccentricity of an Enameled Wire by Capacitance Measurements
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: capacitance, dielectric, eccentricity, enameled wire
There are systems dedicated to measuring the eccentricity of enameled wires based on optical and electromagnetic phenomena. However, these methods are limited by the nature of the insulation and the conductor. The proposed solution consists of checking the wire eccentricity by an electrical measurement. Since it is a conductor on which an insulator is placed, the idea consists of forming a capacitor and measuring its capacitance in order to deduce the insulation thickness.

Improving Transportation Technologies for Carbon Reduction in the Chinese Provinces along the Silk Road
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon reduction, Malmquist index, Silk Road Economic Belt, transportation technologies
As an economic corridor, the Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) connects the East to Western nations, where carbon emissions are gradually becoming severe. This study aims to provide solutions for dealing with carbon emissions from the transportation of the SREB in the Chinese range. By employing the Malmquist index method of data envelopment analysis (DEA), this study develops models to test the different carbon-reduction performances (CRP) of transportation in the Chinese provinces along the SREB. This study shows that carbon-reduction performance has improved since 2013 because of the improvements in transportation technology. Technical efficiency, including scale efficiency and pure technological efficiency, may improve carbon reduction, while the lagged technological progress restricts the CRP. It is further suggested that the provincial CRPs are different. The southwest provinces have the best decarbonization performance, followed by the northwest, while the northeast provinces, incl... An Analytical Heat Transfer Model in Oil Reservoir during Long-Term Production
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat loss to the fluid flowing, Joule–Thomson effect, non-isothermal, reservoir heat transfer, steady-state, system heat transfer
Contrary to the assumption of previous researchers, the radial temperature in the petroleum reservoir during production is non-isothermal because several heat transfer mechanisms change the radial temperature in reservoirs. As there have been few studies, especially after long-term production, this work derives steady-state analytic solutions considering the long-term production. It also presents sensitivity analysis with the various production conditions to investigate heat transfer between the producing fluids and surrounding formations during fluids flowing (hereafter, system heat transfer) in a steady-state. For oil production, the system heat transfer induces a cooling effect on the radial temperature in the reservoir, reducing the temperature rise due to the Joule−Thomson (J−T) heating. This cooling effect increases with the larger Peclet number, however, the relative contribution of the cooling effect to the radial temperature change diminishes. The equations explain that the co... Flux-Weakening Drive for IPMSM Based on Model Predictive Control
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flux-weakening drive, IPMSM, Model Predictive Control
This paper presents a flux-weakening model predictive control (FW-MPC) for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive system. The FW control is a strategy to extend the IPMSM’s operating region. However, the primary FW needs to track the torque reference and maximize the electrical torque per current amplitude with the current and voltage limitations. The two objects make it impossible to solve the FW problem using the optimization method. We proposed an equivalent optimization problem to simplify the complex FW problem, including two objective functions. The MPC is selected as the controller due to its high robustness and transient performance. The constraints from the equivalent optimization problem are added in the MPC to control the IPMSM in the FW region. The simulation and experiment results indicate that the proposed FW-MPC is feasible and effective in driving the IPMSM in the FW region. The proposed FW-MPC can find the optimal point with the maximum electrica... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: iron ore, liberation, mineralogy, reverse flotation, tabling, WHIMS
The greater demand for high-quality iron ores has forced the iron and steel industries to utilize low-grade iron ores, such as banded hematite quartzite (BHQ). In the present work, a striped hematite quartzite sample from the Haraginadoni area, in the Sandur schist belt, Ballari District, Karnataka, India, was subjected to characterization studies and conventional mineral processing methods to produce pellet-grade concentrate, assayed as Fe > 63.0%, SiO2 + Al2O3 < 7%, (Al2O3/SiO2 < 0.5). The sample was analyzed as 35.70% Fe, 47.44% SiO2, 0.75% Al2O3, 0.06% Mn, 0.07% TiO2, 0.03% P, 0.02% S, and 0.83% LOI. We focused on two routes of beneficiating BHQ samples: (1) conventional gravity followed by reverse floatation and (2) magnetic separation followed by cleaning of magnetic concentrate by reverse floatation. Route 1, achieved pellet-grade concentrate through assaying, and was 63.73% Fe, 6.20% SiO2, 0.19% Al2O3, 0.03% Al2O3/SiO2, and 0.23% LOI, D80 45 µm, with 70.1% Fe recovery and... [more]

Hotspot-Aware Workload Scheduling and Server Placement for Heterogeneous Cloud Data Centers
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, heterogeneous data center, hotspot-aware scheduling, server relocation, thermal-profile
Data center servers located in thermal hotspot regions receive inlet air at a higher than the set temperature and thus generate comparatively high outlet temperature. Consequently, there is a rise in energy that is consumed to cool down the servers that otherwise would undergo reliability hazards. The workload deployment across the servers should be resilient to thermal hotspots to ensure smooth performance. In a heterogeneous data center environment, an equally important fact is the placement of the servers in a thermal hotspot-aware manner to lower the peak outlet temperatures. These approaches can be applied proactively with the help of outlet temperature prediction. This paper presents the hotspot adaptive workload deployment algorithm (HAWDA) and hotspot aware server relocation algorithm (HASRA) based on thermal profiling regarding outlet temperature prediction. HAWDA deploys workload on servers in a thermal-efficient manner and HASRA optimizes the server location in thermal hotsp... [more]

Spray Behavior, Combustion, and Emission Characteristics of Jet Propellant-5 and Biodiesel Fuels with Multiple Split Injection Strategies
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, combustion, emissions, JP-5, multiple injection, spray behavior
This study focuses on an analysis of the spray behavior, combustion, and emission characteristics of jet propellant-5 (JP-5) and biodiesel fuels with single-injection timing and multiple split injection strategies in a common rail direct injection (CRDI) single-cylinder diesel engine system. The analysis includes visualization of the spray and combustion. Multiple split injection strategies (e.g., double, triple, quadruple, and quintuple) were considered by equally distributing the fuel injection amount within the single-injection. Injection of biodiesel has a delayed start (0.2 ms) as well as shorter spray tip penetration compared with JP-5. As the fuel injection timing was approached to the top dead center (TDC), the engine performance and combustion efficiency improved. Retarding the injection timing contributed to an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) (JP-5: max. 2.6% up, BD100: max. 1.5% up) and a decrease in carbon monoxide (CO) (JP-5: max. 93% down, BD100: max. 91% down) and nitro... Seismic Analysis of 10 MW Offshore Wind Turbine with Large-Diameter Monopile in Consideration of Seabed Liquefaction
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bending moment envelope, excess pore water pressure, liquefaction potential, offshore wind turbines
With the increasing construction of large-scale wind turbines in seismically active coastal areas, the survivability of these high-rated-power offshore wind turbines (OWTs) in marine and geological conditions becomes extremely important. Although research on the dynamic behaviors of OWTs under earthquakes has been conducted with consideration of the soil-structure interaction, the attention paid to the impact of earthquake-induced seabed liquefaction on OWTs supported by large-diameter monopiles remains limited. In view of this research gap, this study carries out dynamic analyses of a 10 MW OWT under combined wind, wave, and earthquake loadings. This study uses a pressure-dependent multisurface elastoplastic constitutive model to simulate the soil liquefaction phenomenon. The results indicate that the motion of the large-diameter monopile leads to more extensive soil liquefaction surrounding the monopile, specifically in the zone near the pile toe. Moreover, compared with earthquake l... [more]

Lightning Failure Risk Assessment of Overhead Transmission Lines Based on Modified Dempster−Shafer Theory
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Dempster–Shafer theory, lightning failure, mass function correction, risk assessment
Lightning has a certain degree of potential threat to the safe operation of overhead transmission lines. In order to make targeted lightning protection arrangements and reduce the impact of lightning on overhead transmission lines, it is necessary to conduct lightning risk assessments on overhead transmission lines. This paper proposes a lightning failure risk assessment method for overhead transmission lines based on a modified Dempster−Shafer theory. First, analyze the historical lightning failure data of the line, determine the lightning failure impact factors, and use confidence to express the relationship between the lightning failure and the impact factor; then, use entropy weight theory and gray relational theory to calculate the value of mass function, and modify it on this basis; finally, use Dempster−Shafer theory to determine the trust degree and fit this with the calculated lightning trip rate to produce the risk assessment. March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: arch support, cross-section, laser scanning, mine drift area, mine tunnel
Underground mine tunnels, drifts, and mine headings are susceptible to the impact of convergence. The convergence has a big influence on further measurements such as airflow and the volume concentration of methane and other gases. In most cases, deformation of arch supports lead to getting a smaller cross-section area. A comparison is made between five methods of measuring the cross-sectional area of a mine tunnel. The reference size of the six cross-section mine drift areas were obtained by Terrestrial Laser Scanning, which were then compared with the cross-section areas obtained by four other methods. The following methods were considered: area calculation using CAD software, an empirical method, approximation by a semi-ellipse and approximation by a semi-ellipse with attached straight sections. This article presents the quantitative and qualitative differences of the obtained results. Differences in the calculated cross-sectional areas of the mine drift are discussed, and reasons fo... Spatial-Temporal Pattern and Driving Factors of Carbon Efficiency in China: Evidence from Panel Data of Urban Governance
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon efficiency, driving factors, dynamic spatial econometric model, spatial–temporal pattern, super-efficiency SBM model
The improvement in city-level carbon efficiency (CE) is crucial for China to achieve its CO2 emission targets. Based on the panel data from 2003 to 2017, total factor CE values of 283 prefecture-level cities were measured using the super-efficiency SBM model. Through the exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA), we found that the average city-level CE from 2003 to 2017 showed a “W”-type growth trend. Additionally, there are significant spatial heterogeneity and spatial dependency characteristics of city-level CE. The results of local spatial correlation analysis showed that the Low−Low clusters are distributed in all cities of Shanxi and Northern Shaanxi, and gradually expand to Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Ningxia, and Hebei over time, and the High−High clusters are mainly located in the southeast coastal cities and central and eastern Sichuan. High−Low clusters are generally scattered in cities with relatively superior political−economic status in Northeast China, North China, and Northwes... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: discrete-time control, grid-connected inverter, harmonics, Modelling, voltage source converter
This paper elaborates on a development technique for the grid-connected voltage source converter (VSC). We propose a simulation technique in the MATLAB/Simulink environment that emulates the operation of the discrete-time controlled grid-connected VSC. The switched-circuit modeling approach is used for simulation of the power stage in the continuous-time domain with the physical unit scale. The discrete-time control algorithm is implemented in an interpreted MATLAB function in the per-unit scale, which synchronizes with the switching period. Such a control algorithm is easily translated into the C language for programing of the 32-bit C2000 DSP controller with the same regulators’ parameters. The proposed platform was validated with a hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulator and with a 5-kVA 3-phase LCL-filtered grid-connected VSC. The discrete-time control scheme was implemented in the synchronous reference frame control with proportional-integral with multi-resonant controllers at ha... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: degradation resistance, Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, state of health estimation, Unscented Kalman Filter
The evolution of performance degradation has become a major obstacle to the long-life operation of the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system. The feasibility of employing degradation resistance to assess the State of Health (SOH) is proposed and verified. In addition, a real-time Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) based SOH estimation method is further proposed to eliminate the disturbance of calculating the SOH directly utilizing measurement and electric balance model. The results of real-time SOH estimation with an UKF under constant and varying load conditions demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the SOFC performance degradation assessment method.

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: anaerobic digestion plants, biogas, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, energy transition, preferences, rural change
Anaerobic digestion (AD) plants undoubtedly represent an integral and irreplaceable element in rural energy transition and sustainable waste management. In our study, we focus on an advanced understanding of the dynamics behind the changing perceptions of AD plants in host communities in Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The surveyed AD plant case studies were selected to represent best-practice examples of AD plant operations in their countries. By means of a comparative survey in three host communities, we seek to learn more about the shift in perceptions of AD plants between their planning and operational phases. We find that, although our cases are considered best-practice examples of AD plant operations, their overall support in their communities dramatically dropped in the operational phase consequent to real-life experience with living in the neighbourhood of an AD plant. Additionally, our findings indicate that respondents who reported the most severe deterioration of A... [more]

Regulated Two-Dimensional Deep Convolutional Neural Network-Based Power Quality Classifier for Microgrid
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: IEEE Std. 1159, microgrid, power quality classifier, power quality disturbances, regulated two-dimensional deep convolutional neural network, signal synchronization
Due to the penetration of renewable energy and load variation in the microgrid, the diagnosis of power quality disturbances (PQD) is important to the operation stability and safety of the microgrid system. Once the power imbalance is present between the generation and the load demand, the fundamental frequency would deviate from the nominal value. As a result, the performance of the power quality classifier based on the neural network would be deteriorated since the deviation of fundamental frequency is not taken into account. In this paper, the regulated two-dimensional (2D) deep convolutional neural network (CNN)-based approach for PQD classification is proposed. In the data preprocessing stage, the IEC-based synchronizer is introduced to detect the deviation of fundamental frequency. In this way, the 2D grayscale image serving as the input of the deep CNN classifier can be accurately regulated. The obtained 2D image can effectively preserve information and waveform characteristics o... [more]

Effects of the Operating Parameters of Supersonic Separators on the Supersonic Liquefaction Characteristics of Natural Gas
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: condensation, liquefaction, Natural Gas, supersonic separator
In this study, a mathematical model for the supersonic condensate flow of natural gas to understand its condensation process in a supersonic separator has been proposed. The effects of export back pressure, inlet temperature, and inlet pressure on the condensation parameters were investigated. The results indicate that the condensation position moves forward with the increase in the inlet pressure and the decrease in the inlet temperature. A method for determining the optimal range of operating parameters (export back pressure, inlet temperature, and inlet pressure) for the supersonic separator is proposed. Within the optimal back pressure range, the region of extreme Mach number in the device should be at the inlet of the straight pipe section after the separation gap, and extreme value distribution areas of low temperature, condensation nucleation, and humidity should be between the nozzle expansion section and the inlet of the straight pipe section. Combustion Stability Control Based on Cylinder Pressure for High Efficiency Gasoline Engines
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion stability, exhaust gas recirculation, hybrid gasoline engine, in-cylinder pressure sensor
Minimizing fuel consumption of passenger car vehicles can be achieved thanks to hybridization of the powertrain associated with innovative engine technologies. To feed the new high compression ratio combustion systems, air system cutting-edge technologies are used to manage air and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) quantities. Increasing EGR allows us to improve engine consumption in the high efficiency area, but it comes at the cost of a loss of stability. It is then of primary importance to be able to manage the engine near the stability limit to minimize fuel consumption. So far, the stability limit is managed in open-loop thanks to conservative calibration of the EGR quantity, implying efficiency losses. This paper addresses the combustion stability feedback control using in-cylinder pressure sensors. From this information, an indicator of stability is proposed, offering a more robust behavior in transient situations than state-of-the-art indicators. This indicator is then used to fe... [more]

Reliability-Centered Maintenance Scheduling of Photovoltaic Components According to Failure Effects
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: maintenance scheduling, photovoltaic, power distribution system, power outage, Weibull distribution
In the power distribution system of South Korea, the sectionalizer minimizes and recovers the system from failures, and prohibits independent operation of distributed energy resources. Therefore, it is difficult to expect reliability improvements owing to a photovoltaic system in the power distribution system. Herein, we propose a reliability-centered maintenance-scheduling method based on an economic analysis of photovoltaic integration facilities to ensure the economic feasibility of the photovoltaic system operator and the reliability of the power distribution system. Photovoltaic integration facilities are divided into two categories based on their spread of the failure, and the maintenance scheduling is evaluated according to the maximum and minimum losses according to the time of failure. Facilities that cause power outages to photovoltaics and to loads have relatively little effect on the time of failure. This is because the effects of the power outages in the loads predominate.... Keywords: last two stages, steam turbine, thermodynamic loss, water droplets resistance loss, wetness loss
Wetness loss of a steam turbine seriously affects the security of the unit when operating in deep peak regulation. To obtain the distribution characteristics of the high wetness loss area under different working conditions, especially low-load conditions, the last two stages of the low-pressure cylinder (LPC) of a 600 MW steam turbine were simulated using the non-equilibrium condensation model proposed in this study. The nucleation rate distribution, supercooling degree, and steam velocity droplet were analyzed. Consequently, the diameter distribution of coarse water droplets under 100%, 50%, 40%, 30%, and 20% THA conditions and the distribution of the thermodynamic loss and water droplet resistance loss were obtained. Thermodynamic loss mainly occurred at the front end of second-stage stator blades and trailing end of the last-stage stator blades. The water droplet resistance loss mainly occurred at 40% of the blade height and at the tip of the last-stage stator blades. Moreover, with... [more]

For more than 20 years, the use of nanofluids to enhance heat transfer in microchannel heat sinks (MCHSs) has been the subject of a large number of scientific articles. Despite the great potentialities reported in several works, the presence of controversial results and the lack of understanding of heat transfer enhancement mechanisms prevent further advancement in the use of nanofluids as coolants. This article reviews the scientific literature focused on several aspects of nanofluids that have a role in the heat transfer enhancement within the MCHSs: nanofluid stability, thermal conductivity, and particle clustering, as well as the particle−surface interactions, i.e., abrasion, erosion, and corrosion. We also include the most relevant works on the convective heat transfer and MCHSs operated with nanofluids in our review.
