Centralized Multiple Back-Up Protection Scheme with Sharing Data between Adjacent Substations Based on IEC 61850
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: back-up protection, centralized protection, data communication, HILS, IEC 61850, RTDS, SV, testbed
A centralized multiple back-up protection scheme with sharing data between adjacent substations based on IEC 61850 is suggested in this paper to overcome the inherent defects of a conventional back-up protection scheme such as uncertainty of a remote end condition, especially for a distance relay, long operating time delay, and IED/CT fails. A current differential protection element, a distance-based directional protection element, local back-up, and remote back-up protection elements are applied for the multiple back-up protection scheme suggested in this paper. The phasor voltage/current data of the IMU are transferred to a CPCU. In this paper, the IMU has two functions, which are local protection IED and merging unit, as well. The CPCU performs the back-up protection functions by using the phasor voltage/current data collected from other CPCUs located at the adjacent substations. IMU/CT fails are also considered. To verify the back-up protection scheme proposed, a testbed was compos... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ANFIS, ECMS, Haar wavelet transform, hybrid electric vehicle, hydrogen consumption, power management scheme, system efficiency
The power management strategy (PMS) is intimately linked to the fuel economy in the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). In this paper, a hybrid power management scheme is proposed; it consists of an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference method (ANFIS) and the equivalent consumption minimization technique (ECMS). Artificial intelligence (AI) is a key development for managing power among various energy sources. The hybrid power supply is an eco-acceptable system that includes a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) as a primary source and a battery bank and ultracapacitor as electric storage systems. The Haar wavelet transform method is used to calculate the stress σ on each energy source. The proposed model is developed in MATLAB/Simulink software. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme meets the power demand of a typical driving cycle, i.e., Highway Fuel Economy Test Cycle (HWFET) and Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedures (WLTP—Class 3), for testing the vehicle per... Power Transformer Diagnosis Based on Dissolved Gases Analysis and Copula Function
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Bayesian estimation, copula function, DGA, power transformer
The traditional DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis) diagnosis method does not consider the dependence between fault characteristic gases and uses the relationship between gas ratio coding and fault type to make the decision. As a tool of the dependence mechanism between variables, a copula function can effectively analyze the correlation between variables when it cannot determine whether the linear correlation coefficient can correctly measure the correlation between variable relationships. In this paper, the edge variable of a copula function is selected from the fault characteristic gas of a transformer, and the distribution type of the edge variable is fitted at the same time. Then, Bayesian estimation with the Gaussian residual likelihood function is used to fit the parameters of a copula function and a copula function is selected to describe the optimal dependence of the fault characteristic gas of transformer. The relationship between a copula function and the state of transformer is st... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: 1DCNN, coal and gangue identification, near-infrared reflection spectroscopy, self-attention
For the study of coal and gangue identification using near-infrared reflection spectroscopy, samples of anthracite coal and gangue with similar appearances were collected, and different dust concentrations (200 ug/m3, 500 ug/m3 and 800 ug/m3), detection distances (1.2 m, 1.5 m and 1.8 m) and mixing gangue rates (one-third coal, two-thirds coal, full coal) were collected in the laboratory by the reflection spectroscopy acquisition device and the gangue reflection spectral data. The spectral data were pre-processed using three methods, first-order differentiation, second-order differentiation and standard normal variable transformation, in order to enhance the absorption characteristics of the reflectance spectra and to eliminate the effects of changes in the experimental environment. The PCViT gangue identification model is established, and the disadvantages of the violent patch embedding of the ViT model are improved by using the stepwise convolution operation to extract features. Prospects of Using Gas Hydrates in Power Plants
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal slime, coal–water slurry, gas emission, gas hydrate combustion, gas hydrate dissociation, methane–propane hydrate, multi-criteria decision making
By adding water to fuels, several objectives are pursued, with the main ones being to stabilize combustion, minimize the anthropogenic gaseous emissions, homogenize and stabilize the fuel, as well as improve its fire and explosion safety. Water can be injected into the furnace as droplets or vapor and introduced as part of fuel samples. Water often serves as a coupling or carrier medium for the delivery of the main fuel components. In this paper, we compare the combustion behaviors of high-potential slurry fuels and gas hydrates. We also analyze the contribution of in slurries and gas hydrates to the combustion process. The values of relative combustion efficiency indicators are determined for gas hydrates and slurry fuels. The conditions are identified in which these fuels can be burned effectively in power plants. The research findings can be used to rationalize the alternative ways of using water resources, i.e., gas hydrate powder and promising composite fuel droplets. The results... [more]

Full Simulation Modeling of All-Electric Ship with Medium Voltage DC Power System
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: all-electric ship (AES), medium DC power system, ship operating condition, shipboard, Simulation
This paper proposes the full simulation model for the electrical analysis of all-electric ship (AES) based on a medium voltage DC power system. The AES has become popular both in the commercial and the military areas due to a low emission, a high fuel consumption efficiency, and a wide applicability. In spite of many advantages, it is complex and difficult to construct the whole system with many mechanical and electrical components onboard. Full electrical analysis is essentially required to simplify the design of the AES, a control and optimization of a ship electric system. The proposed full simulation model of the AES includes the mechanical and the electrical elements by using the MATLAB/Simulink. The mechanical elements are comprised of a steam turbine and a hydrodynamic model of a ship which is adopted by an average value model that is based on the characteristic equation of the mechanical system. The electrical elements are developed by full detailed models which consist of gene... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Biomass, equilibrium model, error, gasification, Japan, kinetic model, Pro/II, Simulation, waste wood
The conversion of biomass to olefin by employing gasification has recently gained the attention of the petrochemical sector, and syngas composition is a keystone during the evaluation of process design. Process simulation software is a preferred evaluation tool that employs stoichiometric and kinetic approaches. Despite the available literature, the estimation errors of these simulation methods have scarcely been contrasted. This study compares the errors of stoichiometric and kinetic models by simulating a downdraft steam gasifier in PRO/II. The quantitative examination identifies the model that best predicts the composition of products for the gasification of Japanese wood waste. The simulation adopts reaction mechanisms, flowsheet topology, reactions parameters, and component properties reported in the literature. The results of previous studies are used to validate the models in a comparison of the syngas composition and yield of products. The models are used to reproduce gasificat... [more]

Failure Analysis of a Centrifugal Compressor Impeller Made of 17-4PH Steel in the Moist Hydrogen Sulfide Environment
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: compressor impeller fracture, failure analysis, sulfide stress cracking
The impeller under consideration is a rotor wheel of a centrifugal compressor, made of 17-4PH martensitic precipitated hardening stainless steel. Its total operating lifetime was estimated to 80,000 h, but it fractured beforehand, 4 days after the scheduled overhaul without any observed pre-symptoms. The important causes of the failure were its working conditions: a moist H2S environment, the applied shaft fitting stress, and the martensitic structure of its material. In the article the post-failure analysis of an impeller is described, explaining the root cause of the impeller failure by means of both experimental and Finite Element Methods (FEM). Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) was found to be the primary failure mechanism for the impeller under investigation. Details of the investigations and possible corrective measures to improve performance impellers used under harsh environment conditions are discussed.

Deciphering the Interplay between Binders and Electrolytes on the Performance of Li4Ti5O12 Electrodes for Li-Ion Batteries
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Li4Ti5O12, LTO, sodium alginate binder, synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), tetraglyme-based electrolyte
Lithium titanium oxide (Li4Ti5O12, LTO) is an attractive negative electrode for the development of safe—next-generation—lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). LTO can find specific applications complementary to existing alternatives for LIBs thanks to its good rate capability at high C-rates, fast lithium intercalation, and high cycling stability. Furthermore, LIBs featuring LTO electrodes are inherently safer owing to the LTO’s operating potential of 1.55 V vs. Li+/Li where the commonly used organic-based electrolytes are thermodynamically stable. Herein, we report the combined use of water-soluble sodium alginate (SA) binder and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)-tetraglyme (1m-T) electrolyte and we demonstrate the improvement of the electrochemical performance of LTO-based electrodes with respect to those operating in conventional electrolyte 1M LiPF6-ethylene carbonate: dimethyl carbonate (LP30). February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CNx, copolymerization, nanowire arrays, photoelectrocatalysis, TiO2
Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation is an advanced technology that combines photocatalytic oxidation (PC) and electrolytic oxidation (EC). PEC activity can be greatly enhanced by the PC and EC synergy effect. In this work, novel copolymerized g-C3N4 (denoted as CNx)/TiO2 core-shell nanowire arrays were prepared by chemical vapor deposition. CNx were deposited on the surface of TiO2 nanowire arrays using organic monomer 4,5-dicyanidazole and dicyandiamide as copolymerization precursor. TiO2 nanowire arrays provide a direct and fast electron transfer path, while CNx is a visible light responsive material. After CNx deposition, the light response range of TiO2 is broadened to 600 nm. The deposition of CNx shell effectively improves the PC efficiency and PEC efficiency of TiO2. Under visible light irradiation and 1 V bias potential, the rate constant k of PEC degradation of CNx/TiO2 core-shell nanowire arrays is 0.0069 min−1, which is 72% higher than that of pure TiO2 nanowires. Artificial Intelligence-Based Protection for Smart Grids
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network-based relay, distribution system, microgrids, protection strategies, smart grids
Lately, adequate protection strategies need to be developed when Microgrids (MGs) are connected to smart grids to prevent undesirable tripping. Conventional relay settings need to be adapted to changes in Distributed Generator (DG) penetrations or grid reconfigurations, which is a complicated task that can be solved efficiently using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based protection. This paper compares and validates the difference between conventional protection (overcurrent and differential) strategies and a new strategy based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), which have been shown as adequate protection, especially with reconfigurable smart grids. In addition, the limitations of the conventional protections are discussed. The AI protection is employed through the communication between all Protective Devices (PDs) in the grid, and a backup strategy that employs the communication among the PDs in the same line. This paper goes a step further to validate the protection strategies based... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery degradation, capacity decay/attenuation, charge/discharge cycles, Energy Storage, lead acid battery, lithium-ion battery, renewable energy sources, stratification, sulfation, ultra-capacitor
As renewable energy sources, such as solar systems, are becoming more popular, the focus is moving into more effective utilization of these energy sources and harvesting more energy for intermittency reduction in this renewable source. This is opening up a market for methods of energy storage and increasing interest in batteries, as they are, as it stands, the foremost energy storage device available to suit a wide range of requirements. This interest has brought to light the downfalls of batteries and resultantly made room for the investigation of ultra-capacitors as a solution to these downfalls. One of these downfalls is related to the decrease in capacity, and temperamentality thereof, of a battery when not used precisely as stated by the supplier. The usable capacity is reliant on the complete discharge/charge cycles the battery can undergo before a 20% degradation in its specified capacity is observed. This article aims to investigate what causes this degradation, what aggravates... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automated shading, control, office building, sensor location
Shading facilities are important technology to enable the adjustment of the indoor light and heat environment, and the control logic of the technology relies on data collected by sensors. The sensor position is generally arranged on the work surface, which is only suitable for single rooms with fixed locations. For open-plan offices or other large offices, more study of detailed designs for the sensor position is required. Therefore, various sensor locations for different spaces will be investigated. Based on existing research, the UDI2000 lux [50%] and UDI450−2000 lux [50%] are the key indices for measuring sensor location. The Entropy Weight method is used to determine the weight of each index, and the ideal point method (TOPSIS method) is used to select the best sensor location. Based on the results, recommendations are provided for different space scales, window-to-wall ratios, and building orientations of offices for shading control sensor location.

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: concentrating solar power plants, control strategy, disturbance rejection, flexible operation
With the ambition of achieving carbon neutrality worldwide, renewable energy is flourishing. However, due to the inherent uncertainties and intermittence, operation flexibility of controllable systems is critical to accommodate renewables. Existing studies mainly focus on improving the flexibility of conventional plants, while no attention has been paid to the flexible operation of concentrating solar power with thermal energy storage (CSP-TES) systems. To this end, the ultimate goal of this work is to investigate the potentiality and realization of CSP-TES systems to flexibly operate in grid system regulation. With this goal, the dynamic characteristics of a 50 MW parabolic trough collector CSP plant with molten-salt-based TES is analyzed, and its dominant control characteristics are concluded to demonstrate the possibility of the ideal. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DTW distance, fault location, FCM clustering, resonant grounding system, transient projection method, transient signal
When a single-phase grounding fault occurs in a resonant grounding system, the determination of the fault location remains a significant challenge due to the small fault current and the instability of the grounding arc. In order to solve the problem of low protection sensitivity when a high-resistance grounding fault occurs in a resonant grounding system, this paper proposes a fault location method based on the combination of dynamic time warping (DTW) distance and fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering. By analyzing the characteristics of the zero-sequence current upstream and downstream of the fault point when a single-phase grounding fault occurs in the resonant grounding system, it is concluded that the waveform similarity on both sides of the fault point is low. DTW distance can be used to measure the similarity of two time series, and has the characteristics of good fault tolerance and synchronization error tolerance. Estimation Accuracy of the Electric Field in Cable Insulation Based on Space Charge Measurement
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deconvolution, estimation accuracy, field distribution, power cables, pulsed electroacoustic method, space charge measurement
Space charge measurement accuracy is crucial when assessing the suitability of cables for high-voltage direct current (DC) systems. This study assembled state-of-the-art analysis technologies, including time-domain deconvolution, to mark electric field estimation accuracy, which the present techniques achieve. The pulse electroacoustic method was applied to a 66 kV-class extruded cable, and waveforms were obtained and analyzed to reproduce the electric field distribution. The DC voltage was set to be sufficiently low so that the analysis results can be compared with Laplace’s equation. The statistical analysis of 81 waveforms under a DC voltage of 30 kV showed that the estimation accuracy was −0.3% ± 19.9% with a 95.4% confidence interval, even with the deconvolution parameter optimized. The estimated accuracy using the “reference” waveform is applied to waveforms at higher voltages since similar estimation accuracies were confirmed for waveforms obtained under a DC voltage of 45 kV.

Numerical Investigation of Flow and Heat Transfer in Rectangular Microchannels with and without Semi-Elliptical Protrusions
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow and heat transfer, heat transfer enhancement, microchannel, turbulence generation
Micro-cooling is a growing trend in the field of turbine blade cooling. Technical difficulties in the experiments of large-aspect-ratio rectangular microchannels that are commonly used in the turbine blades cause the rareness of related literature. In this study, the flow characteristics and heat transfer performance of the microchannels with and without semi-ellipsoidal protrusions, whose height is 0.6 mm and width is 9 mm, are numerically investigated. In the microchannel without protrusions, when 2214 < Re < 3589, the velocity has a Λ-shaped distribution, resulting in a Λ-shaped Nu distribution on the wall. When Re > 3760, it is worth noting that from the sidewall to the middle of the channel, Nu first decreases and then increases. In the microchannel with protrusions, when Re < 1214, the turbulence formed by the protrusion is almost all behind it and does not spread to both sides. When 1214 < Re < 2374, the turbulence caused by the protrusions gradually spreads to the m... [more]

Keywords: clustering, energy management, k-means algorithm, networked microgrid, SOM algorithm
Networked microgrid (NMG) is a novel conceptual paradigm that can bring multiple advantages to the distributed system. Increasing renewable energy utilization, reliability and efficiency of system operation and flexibility of energy sharing amongst several microgrids (MGs) are some specific privileges of NMG. In this paper, residential MGs, commercial MGs, and industrial MGs are considered as a community of NMG.
