Sorption−Dilatometric Properties of Coal from a High-Methane Mine in a CO2 and CH4 Atmosphere
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, Coal, methane, sorption, swelling
Although highly developed countries are trying to diversify away from coal-based energy, many economies rely on this resource. Its consumption results in the production of carbon dioxide, which promotes global warming, necessitating its sequestration. This paper presents the sorption−dilatometric relationships of hard coal samples differing in vitrinite and inertinite content. The studies were carried out under isothermal conditions (298 K) at a free pressure drop complemented by measurements under non-isothermal conditions (298 K to 323 K). The tests were performed on an original apparatus, based on the operation of an Arduino microcontroller. For the natural porosity to be preserved and for a better representation of the behaviour of the coal−gas system, samples in the form of cuboidal blocks were used, making this apparatus unique worldwide. Based on the study, it appears that the difference in petrographic composition affects the behaviour of the coal structure, influencing differe... [more]

Relationship between Odor Adsorption Ability and Physical−Hydraulic Properties of Torrefied Biomass: Initial Study
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biomass, indole, odor, physical-hydraulic properties, torrefaction
Various techniques are implemented to reduce odor emission due to their potential multi-source nature. One modern approach is the use of thermochemically processed biomass to eliminate odors. Compared with raw biomass, processed biomass is characterized by greater porosity and an expanded specific surface. In these laboratory experiments, adsorption tests for a mixture of indole, 2,3-dimethylpyrazine, and 2,3,5-trimethylpyrazine are carried out using torreficates produced from biomass from the agri-food industry (walnut shells, orange peels, peach stones, and apple wood chips). This research is focused on the determination of the correlation between the physical-hydraulic properties of the torreficates and their ability to reduce the odors simulated by the selected compounds. The results indicate that 2,3-dimethylpyrazine and 2,3,5-trimethylpyrazine are not detected in any of the investigated low-temperature biochars. However, indole is detected in most materials, and its most signific... [more]

Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: immobilization, soil amendments, soil contamination
The presence of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils can upset the natural balance and increase the risk of PTE incorporation into the food chain. The use of composite biochar with municipal sewage sludge compost (MSSC/C) can be an effective way of both managing waste, such as sewage sludge, and providing an effective additive-supporting phytostabilization processes. The effectiveness of D. glomerata and MSSC/C in the technique of assisted phytostabilization of industrially contaminated soils was determined under the pot experiment conditions. The PTE contents in D. glomerata and the soil were determined using the spectrophotometric method. The addition of MSSC/C to PTE-contaminated soil contributed to an 18% increase in plant biomass and increased the soil pH by 1.67 units, with the PTE concentration being higher in the roots than in the above-ground parts of D. glomerata. The MSSC/C addition had the strongest effect on the reduction in Cd, Cr, and Ni contents in the soil follow... [more]

“Is Energy That Different from Labor?” Similarity in Determinants of Intensity for Auto Assembly Plants
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: automotive industry, energy-efficient manufacturing, productivity, unit energy intensity
This paper addresses the question “Is energy that different from labor?” from the perspective of efficiency. It presents a novel statistical analysis for the auto assembly industry in North America to examine the determinants of relative energy intensity, and contrasts this with a similar analysis of the determinants of another important factor of production, labor intensity. The data used combine two non-public sources of data previously used to separately study key performance indicators (KPIs) for energy and labor intensity. The study found these two KPIs are statistically correlated (the correlation coefficient is 0.67) and the relationship is one-to-one. The paper identifies 11 factors that may influence both energy and labor intensity KPIs. The study then contrasts which of the empirical factors the two KPIs’ share and how they differ. Two novel statistical methods, Huber estimators and Multiple M-estimators, combined with regularized algorithms, are identified as the preferred m... [more]

Effect of Ethanol Added to Diesel Fuel on the Range of Fuel Spray
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, diesel fuel, dodecanol, Ethanol, kinematic viscosity, spray macrostructure
The constantly growing number of vehicles sold and operated has resulted in greater contribution of automobiles to global pollution. One way to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and toxic compounds, including the particulates and nitrogen oxides (NOx) contained in exhaust gases, is to use alternative fuels. Within this group of fuels, those of plant origin, mainly alcohols, are attracting more and more attention because of their high oxygen content (around 35%), low viscosity, and good atomisation. However, alternative fuels have different physicochemical properties than diesel fuel, and these may affect the formation of the fuel spray, which, in turn, impacts the operation of the internal combustion engine, operating parameters, and the purity of the exhaust gases emitted into the environment. To make sure this type of fuel can be used in compression ignition engines, it is necessary to gain a thorough understanding of the phenomena and relationships occurring during fuel injec... [more]

A New Methodology Combining Geophysical Calculations and Geological Analysis to Identify and Characterize Carrier Systems for Vertical Hydrocarbon Migration in the Central Diapir Zone of the Yinggehai Basin, China
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carrier systems, central diapir zone, fractures, gas migrations and accumulations, overpressure
To understand hydrocarbon migration in terms of the mechanisms, accumulations and exploration targets, it is essential to correctly identify and characterize the carrier systems that control fluid-migration history and oil/gas reservoir formation. The Yinggehai Basin in China is an important area for natural gas exploration and production. However, due to the argillaceous sand sedimentary environment and the absence of faults from the Neogene thermal subsidence period, traditional migration pathways are absent in the Yinggehai Basin, posing significant challenges to target evaluation in this area. Exploration shows that most of the existing gas reservoirs are associated with vertical migration. In this work, coherence cube and curvature seismic techniques are used in the central diapir zone of the Yinggehai Basin to identify diapir-associated fractures and regional stress. Together with geological analysis, two categories of carrier system are discussed in detail to explain the complex... [more]

Electrically Active Defects in SiC Power MOSFETs
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: 4H-SiC, interface traps, near-interface traps, SiC power MOSFET
The performance and reliability of the state-of-the-art power 4H-SiC metal−oxide−semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) are affected by electrically active defects at and near the interface between SiC and the gate dielectric. Specifically, these defects impact the channel-carrier mobility and threshold voltage of SiC MOSFETs, depending on their physical location and energy levels. To characterize these defects, techniques have evolved from those used for Si devices to techniques exclusively designed for the SiC MOS structure and SiC MOSFETs. This paper reviews the electrically active defects at and near the interface between SiC and the gate dielectric in SiC power MOSFETs and MOS capacitors. First, the defects are classified according to their physical locations and energy positions into (1) interface traps, (2) near interface traps with energy levels aligned to the energy gap, and (3) near-interface traps with energy levels aligned to the conduction band of SiC. Water Influence on the Determination of the Rock Matrix Bulk Modulus in Reservoir Engineering and Rock-Fluid Coupling Projects
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biot’s coefficient, carbon sequestration, compressibility, fluid injection, improved oil recovery, pore pressure, poroelasticity, reservoir engineering, Skempton’s coefficient, unconventional reservoir
This research was conducted to determine how the incorporation of different poroelastic equations would affect the measured rock matrix bulk modulus in the laboratory. To do this, three experimental methods were used to measure the matrix bulk modulus, Ks, of seven sandstone specimens taken from the Świętokrzyskie mine in Poland. Those experimental methods were based on the different governing equations in poroelasticty theory. The matrix bulk modulus has a substantial impact on the rock strength against external stresses. Moreover, the rock bulk modulus depends directly on two components: the pore fluid bulk modulus and matrix bulk modulus. The second one is more important as it is much higher than the first one. In this study, the accuracy of those three methods in the measurement of the matrix bulk modulus was evaluated. For this purpose, an acoustic wave propagation apparatus was used to perform the required tests. For each method, an empirical correlation was extracted between the... [more]

Water Wall Tubes’ High Temperature Corrosion Root Cause Investigation: A 300 MW Level Boiler Case
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: boiler, H2S, high temperature corrosion, reducing ambience
High temperature corrosion poses a great threat to boiler water wall safe operation. To investigate the corrosion root cause, a 300 MW level boiler water wall high temperature H2S corrosion case was reported. The typical hydrogen sulfide H2S corrosion feature was large amounts of sulfur which could be found in the cut down sample tube corrosion layer, with a thickness of 482 μm. In addition, huge amounts of lead (Pb) could be found in the corrosion layer, which resulted from the lead sulfide (PbS) deposition when the high temperature flue gas condensed at the water wall tubes. Meanwhile, the sulfur in the corrosion layer was closely related to the H2S concentration in the water wall ambience. The related ambience test showed that the H2S could achieve up to 1000 ppm when the boiler was in operation, far larger than the suggested reference value of 100 ppm. Hence, the overlarge H2S concentration was a vital factor for the tube corrosion. To further investigate the reason why the H2S was... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow separation, heat transfer, overexpanded nozzle, Thrust Optimized Parabolic (TOP) nozzle
In this study, numerical simulations have been carried out to analyze the effect of convective heat transfer on flow separation occurring in a DLP-PAR nozzle. Heat transfer coefficient (0, 200 and 1000 w/m2K) was applied to the nozzle wall to incorporate the cooling effect for different gas inlet temperatures ranging from 1000 to 1500 K. The impact of the cooling effect was analyzed based on nozzle wall temperature and wall static pressure. The wall static pressure distribution also characterizes movement of the separation point. For an inlet temperature of 1000 K, a detailed heat transfer study was carried out for four different nozzle pressure ratios (14, 22, 30 and 40). Significant amount of heat transfer was observed for pressure ratio 14, which in turn had an impact on flow separation. The wall cooling resulted in a shift of the point of separation towards the nozzle exit. For the nozzle pressure ratio of 14, this shift was by about 8.8%, indicating that the flow separation can be... [more]
