Vibration Fault Detection in Wind Turbines Based on Normal Behaviour Models without Feature Engineering
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: autoencoders, condition monitoring, convolutional autoencoders, Fault Detection, neural networks, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, vibrations, wind turbines
Most wind turbines are remotely monitored 24/7 to allow for early detection of operation problems and developing damage. We present a new fault detection approach for vibration-monitored drivetrains that does not require any feature engineering. Our method relies on a simple model architecture to enable a straightforward implementation in practice. We propose to apply convolutional autoencoders for identifying and extracting the most relevant features from a broad continuous range of the spectrum in an automated manner, saving time and effort. We focus on the range of [0, 1000] Hz for demonstration purposes. A spectral model of the normal vibration response is learnt for the monitored component from past measurements. We demonstrate that the trained model can successfully distinguish damaged from healthy components and detect a damaged generator bearing and damaged gearbox parts from their vibration responses. Using measurements from commercial wind turbines and a test rig, we show tha... [more]

Reactive Processes for H2S Removal
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biogas purification, catalyst, H2S removal
Growing demand for renewables and sustainable energy production contributes to a growing interest in producing high quality biomethane from biogas. Despite having methane (CH4) as its main component, biogas may also present other noncombustible substances in its composition, i.e., carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Contaminant gases, such as CO2 and H2S, are impurities known for being the main causes for the decrease of biogas calorific value and corrosion, wear of pipes, and engines, among others. Thus, it is necessary to remove these compounds from the biogas before it can be used in applications such as electricity production, thermal purposes, and replacement of conventional fossil fuels in vehicles, as well as injection into natural gas distribution networks. In this context, the present work aimed to present a systematic review of the literature using the multicriteria Methodi Ordinatio methodology and to describe processes and materials for H2S remov... Using Algae for Biofuel Production: A Review
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: algae, biodiesel, bioethanol, biofuel, biogas, eutrophication
One of the greatest challenges of the 21st century is to obtain an ecological source of transport fuels. The production of biofuels based on feedstock obtained through the exploitation of arable land translates into an increase in food prices and progressive degradation of the environment. Unlike traditional agricultural raw materials, algae are a neutral alternative in many respects. They can even be obtained as waste from polluted water reservoirs. One of the manifestations of the deterioration of surface waters is the eutrophication of water reservoirs, which leads to an increase in the number of algae. Algae reaching the shores of water reservoirs can be used as a raw material for the production of biofuels, including biogas, bioethanol and biodiesel. However, it should be remembered that water blooms are a periodic phenomenon, appearing in the summer months. Therefore, in order to ensure the continuity of obtaining energy from biomass, it is necessary to conduct algae cultivation... [more]

High-Cell-Density Yeast Oil Production with Diluted Substrates Imitating Microalgae Hydrolysate Using a Membrane Bioreactor
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosus, membrane bioreactor, microbial oil, oleaginous yeast, single-cell oils
Microbial oil production from industrial waste streams and biogenic resources, such as biomass hydrolysates, is emerging as a sustainable alternative to use of fossil and vegetable oils. However, the carbon sources of these substrates are typically diluted, leading to low product concentrations and, therefore, high fermentation and downstream processing costs. In this study, high-cell-density yeast oil production with a defined medium, which imitated the sugar composition of a diluted substrate, a typical microalgal biomass hydrolysate, is carried out on a 50 L scale using a membrane bioreactor (MBR) consisting of a microfiltration unit suited for industrial application. The process was run on a semi-continuous mode to reduce operational costs. Oleaginous yeast Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosus was used as a biocatalyst and lipid production was induced by phosphate deficiency in the medium with a C/P ratio of 3515 g g−1. In this way, high cellular lipid contents of up to 76.5% (w/w) of d... [more]

Empirical Study of Stability and Fairness of Schemes for Benefit Distribution in Local Energy Communities
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: fairness, local energy community, nucleolus, Shapley value, Shapley–core, stability
The concept of local energy communities is receiving increasing attention. However, the question of how to distribute the benefit of a community among its members is still open. It is commonly desired that the benefit distribution is fair and stable. While benefit distribution schemes such as the nucleolus, Shapley value and Shapley-core are known to perform well in terms of fairness and stability, studies have shown that none of them can guarantee full fairness and stability at the same time. However, the existing studies neglect the temporal component. Hence, in order to gain more insights into the stability and fairness of the three aforementioned distributions in practice, we investigate their performance over time in simulation experiments on real-world data from Australian households. In about 90% of the cases, the Shapley value yielded a reasonably stable distribution, while the nucleolus yielded a reasonably fair distribution in about 75% of the cases. Furthermore, the experime... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: intelligent algorithms, lithology identification, Raoyang sag, shale strata, well logs
Lithology identification is the basis for sweet spot evaluation, prediction, and precise exploratory deployment and has important guiding significance for areas with low exploration degrees. The lithology of the shale strata, which are composed of fine-grained sediments, is complex and varies regularly in the vertical direction. Identifying complex lithology is a typical nonlinear classification problem, and intelligent algorithms can effectively solve this problem, but different algorithms have advantages and disadvantages. Compared were the three typical algorithms of Fisher discriminant analysis, BP neural network, and classification and regression decision tree (C&RT) on the identification of seven lithologies of shale strata in the lower 1st member of the Shahejie Formation (Es1L) of Raoyang sag. Fisher discriminant analysis method is linear discriminant, the recognition effect is poor, the accuracy is 52.4%; the accuracy of the BP neural network to identify lithology is 82.3%, bu... [more]

A Survey on the Application of Machine Learning in Turbulent Flow Simulations
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Machine Learning, turbulence, turbulence modeling
As early as at the end of the 19th century, shortly after mathematical rules describing fluid flow—such as the Navier−Stokes equations—were developed, the idea of using them for flow simulations emerged. However, it was soon discovered that the computational requirements of problems such as atmospheric phenomena and engineering calculations made hand computation impractical. The dawn of the computer age also marked the beginning of computational fluid mechanics and their subsequent popularization made computational fluid dynamics one of the common tools used in science and engineering. From the beginning, however, the method has faced a trade-off between accuracy and computational requirements. The purpose of this work is to examine how the results of recent advances in machine learning can be applied to further develop the seemingly plateaued method. Examples of applying this method to improve various types of computational flow simulations, both by increasing the accuracy of the resu... [more]

Dynamic Control of Traction Motor for EV Fed via Dual Source Inverter with a Two Battery System
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, dual-source inverter, electric vehicle, field-oriented control-space vector modulation, multi-energy storage system
An electric vehicle uses multiple energy-storage systems to power the traction motor. Dual-source inverters (DSIs) are used for single-stage power conversion by skipping the dc/dc boost converter stage; therefore, eliminating the passive magnetic storing element which improves the overall efficiency of the drive; moreover, multiple energy-storage systems improve the power density of the system. This article discusses the fine control of a traction motor from zero speed to rated speed supplied through a dual-source inverter. Field-oriented control with space vector modulation technique is applied to achieve closed-loop control. Two dc sources are used, one having a higher-voltage battery and one a lower-voltage battery. The higher-voltage battery is the main battery which supplies power to the traction motor, whereas the lower-voltage battery supplies power to supplementary loads of the EV. This article presents improved dynamic behaviour of an induction-motor-driven EV fed from a dual-... [more]

Power Electronics Converters for Electric Vehicle Auxiliaries: State of the Art and Future Trends
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: auxiliary power module (APM), dual active bridge (DAB), electric vehicles (EV), isolated DC-DC converter, wide-band-gap (WBG) semiconductors
Electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to take over the transportation and mobility market over traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles soon. The internal power demands of EVs are expected to increase. The reason for this is to achieve a longer driving range for the EV and to provide the required power for the low-voltage (LV) network auxiliary loads. To illustrate, there are extra added sensors, cameras, and small actuating motors, especially for future autonomous vehicles. Therefore, a new electrical/electronic (E/E) architecture is required to convert the high-voltage (HV) traction battery voltage (e.g., 320−800 V DC) to the standard LV levels with high current ratings of 5 kW and more. This HV-LV DC-DC converter is known in the literature as an auxiliary power module (APM). The standard LV rails in an EV are the 12 V/24 V rail to supply for an instant the EV’s lighting and electronic control units (ECUs), while the 48 V rail is required for propulsive loads, such as air... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: airborne wind energy, life-cycle assessment, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Sustainability, wind farm
A key motivation for airborne wind energy is its potential to reduce the amount of material required for the generation of renewable energy. On the other hand, the materials used for airborne systems’ components are generally linked to higher environmental impacts. This study presents comparative life-cycle analyses for future multi-megawatt airborne wind energy systems and conventional wind turbines, with both technologies operating in the same farm configuration and under matching environmental conditions. The analyses quantify the global warming potential and cumulative energy demand of the emerging and established wind energy technologies. The cumulative energy demand is subsequently also used to determine the energy payback time and the energy return on investment. The selected airborne wind energy system is based on the design of Ampyx Power, using a fixed-wing aircraft that is tethered to a generator on the ground. Circular Economy and Green Chemistry: The Need for Radical Innovative Approaches in the Design for New Products
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, energy efficient chemical production, green chemistry, waste management
The idea of a circular economy (CE) has gained ground over the past ten years as a means of addressing sustainable development and getting around the limitations of the current and linear dominant production and consumption patterns. The primary goal of a CE is to encourage the adoption of closing-the-loop production methods to improve resource use efficiency, modify chemical processes, and increase product and material lifespan. According to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which focuses on 17 Sustainable Development Goals, 14 of which call for the appropriate application of green chemistry (GC) concepts and patterns, the role that chemistry may play in the shift toward more sustainable models is critical. By serving as the foundation for novel products made from renewable feedstocks and designed to be reused, recycled, or recovered with the associated minimum energy requirements, green and sustainable chemistry could be the key to unlocking the economic potential of the C... A Decade Review of the Art of Inspection and Monitoring Technologies for Long-Distance Oil and Gas Pipelines in Permafrost Areas
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: in-line inspection, long-distance oil and gas pipeline, monitoring, off-line inspection, permafrost area
Long-distance oil and gas pipelines buried in permafrost areas will inevitably encounter typical geological disasters, such as frost heave and thaw settlement and sliding, which easily cause pipeline displacement, bending, or deformation. When there are certain defects in the pipeline, additional complex, external stress will further lead to the failure of the pipeline or weld and can even lead to serious accidents such as pipeline leakage, pipe burst, or fracture. This paper introduces in detail the typical defects and risks of buried pipelines in permafrost areas and summarizes the in-line inspection technologies, off-line inspection technologies, and integrated monitoring systems for pipelines in the pipeline industry. Regarding pipelines in permafrost areas, in-line inspection methods may be employed. These include magnetic flux leakage, electromagnetic eddy current, ultrasonic, IMU, and electromagnetic acoustic transducer inspections. Off-line inspection is also one of the importa... [more]

Sensitivity Analysis of Battery Aging for Model-Based PHEV Use Scenarios
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery aging, plug-in hybrid vehicle, sensitivity analysis, use case scenarios
Battery lifetime is an important parameter in the life cycle assessment (LCA) of a plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle (PHEV). This paper aims to study the impact of various parameters on the battery aging of a PHEV. For this purpose, model-based use cases are generated, the outputs of which are the daily driven distances for a period of one year, recharge scenarios, and battery temperature. A combined aging model (calendar and cycling aging) is used to calculate the capacity lost by the battery at the end of one year of use. The thermal model of the battery is using an electro-thermal coupling equation, for which the ambient temperature is modeled using daily minimum and maximum temperature data varying throughout the year for different cities. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is carried out using the conditioned variance method to identify the most important input parameters which largely affect the output of this study. Physical Modelling of Tidal Stream Turbine Wake Structures under Yaw Conditions
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: experiment, tidal stream energy, turbine alignment, wake structure, yaw angles
Tidal stream turbines may operate under yawed conditions due to variability in ocean current directions. Insight into the wake structure of yawed turbines can be essential to ensure efficient tidal stream energy extraction, especially for turbine arrays where wake interactions emerge. We studied experimentally the effects of turbines operating under varying yaw conditions. Two scenarios, including a single turbine and a set of two turbines in alignment, were configured and compared. The turbine thrust force results confirmed that an increasing yaw angle results in a decrease in the turbine streamwise force and an increase in the turbine spanwise force. The velocity distribution from the single turbine scenario showed that the wake deflection and velocity deficit recovery rate increased at a rate proportional to the yaw angle. The two-turbine scenario results indicated that the deployment of an upstream non-yawed turbine significantly limited the downstream wake steering (i.e., the wake... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: algae, digestate, liquid fertilizers, mine materials, sustainable energy policy, waste materials
The topical challenge for the Polish, European, and global fertilizer industry is to produce sufficient nutrients for growing plants using more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly methods. The appropriate course of action, in terms of the challenges posed, could be the production of liquid fertilizers, made from waste materials that exhibit fertilizer properties. This solution makes it possible not only to reduce the exploitation of natural resources but above all, to implement elements of a circular economy and reduce the energy intensity of the fertilizer industry. This study shows that both in Poland and the European Union, there are current regulations aimed at elements of a circular economy and indicating the need to obtain fertilizers containing valuable plant nutrients from organic waste or recycled materials. Subject: Environment
Keywords: biodiesel, circular economy, economic analysis, waste cooking oil
A detailed review was conducted to explore waste cooking oil (WCO) as feedstock for biodiesel. The manuscript highlights the impact on health while using used cooking oil and the scope for revenue generation from WCO. Up to a 20% blend with diesel results in less pollutants, and it does not demand more modifications to the engine. Also, this reduces the country’s import bill. Furthermore, it suggests the scope for alternate sustainable income among rural farmers through a circular economy. Various collection strategies are discussed, a SWOC (strength, weakness, opportunity, and challenges) analysis is presented to aid in understanding different countries’ policies regarding the collection of WCO, and a more suitable method for conversion is pronounced. A techno-economic analysis is presented to explore the viability of producing 1 litre of biodiesel. Turbine Fast Valving Setting Method Based on the Hybrid Simulation Approach
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: detail model, hybrid approach, power system stability, turbine fast valving
Turbine fast valving is one way to preserve the stability of power systems in case of emergency excess power. The determination of optimal setting parameters of turbine fast valving is a rather complicated task. It is connected with the necessity to determine the parameters of an electrical signal, which controls by means of an amplifier the position of control valves and, accordingly, the value of the output turbine power. The amplitude, duration, as well as the form of the electric signal influence the speed and depth of turbine unloading; they also determine the character of transient process development, including in the post-emergency mode. The proposed approach differs from the currently used one in that the optimal electrical signal shape is selected by multiple detailed modelling in power system simulators, rather than one of three to five initial settings determined at the turbine manufacturer without taking into account the response of the power system. Thus, when using compl... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ANFO, AUTODYN, detonation, EXPLO5, numerical modeling, shock initiation
The ammonium nitrate (AN) and fuel oil (FO) mixture known as ANFO is a typical representative of non-ideal explosives. In contrast to ideal explosives, the detonation behavior of ANFO exhibits a strong dependence on charge diameter, existence, and properties of confinement, with a large failure diameter and long distance required to establish steady-state detonation. In this study shock initiation and propagation of detonation in ANFO were studied experimentally by determining the detonation velocity at different distances from the initiation point, as well as by numerical modeling using AUTODYN hydrodynamics code and a Wood−Kirkwood detonation model incorporated into EXPLO5 thermochemical code. The run-to-steady-state detonation velocity distance was determined as a function of charge diameter, booster charge mass, and confinement. It was demonstrated that a Lee−Tarver ignition and growth reactive flow model with properly calibrated rate constants was capable of correctly ascertaining... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage systems, demand response strategies, demand side management, distributed energy resources, distribution generation, operational challenges, optimization techniques
Distribution systems in traditional power systems (PS) constituted of passive elements and the distribution issues were then limited to voltage and thermal constraints, harmonics, overloading and unbalanced loading, reactive power compensation issues, faults and transients, loss minimization and frequency stability problems, to name a few. Contemporary distribution systems are becoming active distributed networks (ADNs) that integrate a substantially increasing amount of distributed energy resources (DERs). DERS include distributed generation (DG) sources, energy storage resources and demand side management (DSM) options. Despite their evidenced great benefits, the large-scale deployment and integration of DERs remain a challenge as they subsequently lead to the network operational and efficiency issues, hampering PS network reliability and stability. Heat Transfer Analysis Using Thermofluid Network Models for Industrial Biomass and Utility Scale Coal-Fired Boilers
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: boiler process models, furnace, radiative-convective heat exchanger
Integrated whole-boiler process models are useful in the design of biomass and coal-fired boilers, and they can also be used to analyse different scenarios such as low load operation and alternate fuel firing. Whereas CFD models are typically applied to analyse the detail heat transfer phenomena in furnaces, analysis of the integrated whole-boiler performance requires one-dimensional thermofluid network models. These incorporate zero-dimensional furnace models combined with the solution of the fundamental mass, energy, and momentum balance equations for the different heat exchangers and fluid streams. This approach is not new, and there is a large amount of information available in textbooks and technical papers. However, the information is fragmented and incomplete and therefore difficult to follow and apply. The aim of this review paper is therefore to: (i) provide a review of recent literature to show how the different approaches to boiler modelling have been applied; (ii) to provid... [more]
