Preparation of an Anodic Alumina-Supported Ni Catalyst and Development of a Catalytic Plate Reformer for the Steam Reforming of Methane
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3D model, anodic alumina, backmixing, Simulation, steam reforming of methane
A plate-type Al/Fe−Cr alloy/Al-clad substrate was used to prepare a sandwich-structured plate-type anodic alumina catalyst by anodization, post-modification treatment, and metal loading. The as-prepared plate-type catalyst was utilized in the design of a catalytic plate reactor for a methane steam reforming reaction, and a 3D model was developed to simulate the performance of tube-type and box-type reformers. The experimental results of the preparation of the clad materials showed that the hydrothermal treatment and subsequent high-temperature calcination transformed the amorphous skeletal alumina in the conventional anodic alumina layer into γ-alumina, and significantly increased its specific surface area. Simulation results showed that the temperature difference between the channel wall and the center of the gas phase of the thin-walled catalyst was only 30% of that of the particulate catalyst, indicating the potential advantages of the catalytic plate reactor in terms of heat transf... Sampling Rate and Performance of DC/AC Inverters with Digital PID Control—A Case Study
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: carrier frequency, Modelling, performance evaluation, PID control, PWM, Simulation, THD, variable structure, VSI
The huge influence of the sampling rate on the performance of the digital PID control of a voltage source inverter (VSI) is revealed. It is shown that an appropriately chosen continuous-time model of a digital controller with the PWM power converter behaves like the actual discrete-time system, which allows for a simple controller analysis and design. The variable structure nature of the inverter with both the RC rectifier and an abruptly changing resistive load with two modes of operation within the sampling period is directly taken into account. Two simulation models, a discrete-time PWM and a continuous-time, of an inverter are presented, which are used to tune the PID controller and to evaluate the control performance. The behavior of the system in both modes is explained on the basis of the root loci and frequency characteristics. The results obtained for three sampling rates: 12.8, 25.6, and 51.2 kHz, are presented and compared with an actual VSI experiment. A comparison with oth... [more]

Electrification of LPT in Algeciras Bay: A New Methodology to Assess the Consumption of an Equivalent E-Bus
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: charging infrastructure, electric bus consumption, electric heavy-duty vehicles, local public transport, Simulation
The present paper proposes a new methodology to aid the electrification process of local public transport (LPT). In more detail, real drive cycles of traditional buses currently in use are evaluated together with other data to simulate the consumption of equivalent e-buses (electric buses) with similar characteristics. The results are then used in order to design the best charging infrastructure. The proposed methodology is applied to the case study of Algeciras Bay, where a specific line of LPT is considered. Real measurements are used as data for the simulation model, and the average consumption of an equivalent e-bus is obtained for different operating conditions. Based on these results, different sizes and locations for fast-charging infrastructure are proposed, and the size of the depot charging system is defined trying to maintain the current buses timetable. Finally, some future developments of the present work are presented by considering other bus lines that may benefit from t... [more]

Standard and Modified SST Models with the Consideration of the Streamline Curvature for Separated Flow Calculation in a Narrow Channel with a Conical Dimple on the Heated Wall
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: channel, conical dimple, heat, Simulation, vortex
The testing of the standard and modified SST models of the transfer of shear stresses was carried out on an example of calculating the heat transfer with an intense detached flow around a conical dimple with a slope angle of 45° on the heated wall of a narrow channel. It was shown that the standard turbulence model by Menter SST (MSST) of 2003, widely used in the packages Fluent, CFX, StarCCM+, etc., significantly underestimated the intensity of the return flow. A correction of this model was presented that took into account the influence of the curvature of streamlines within the framework of the Rodi-Leshziner-Isaev (RLI) approach for spatial separated flows. It was found that the predictions for the RLI MSST 2003 were close to the predictions for the original standard MSST 1993, in which the eddy viscosity was calculated using the vorticity modulus. At the same time, the predictions based on the modified one, following Smirnov-Menter (SM) MSST 2003, included in the ANSYS model catal... [more]

Drying and Heating Processes in Arbitrarily Shaped Clay Materials Using Lumped Phenomenological Modeling
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ceramic materials, drying, industrial brick, lumped model, Simulation
This work aims to study the drying of clay ceramic materials with arbitrary shapes theoretically. Advanced phenomenological mathematical models based on lumped analysis and their exact solutions are presented to predict the heat and mass transfers in the porous material and estimate the transport coefficients. Application has been made in hollow ceramic bricks. Different simulations were carried out to evaluate the effect of drying air conditions (relative humidity and speed) under conditions of forced and natural convection. The transient results of the moisture content and temperature of the brick, and the convective heat and mass transfer coefficients are presented, discussed and compared with experimental data, obtaining a good agreement. It was found that the lower the relative humidity is and the higher the speed of the drying air is, the higher the convective heat and mass transfer coefficients are at the surface of the brick and in the holes, and the faster the moisture removal... Optimization and Coordination of Electric Vehicle Charging Process for Long-Distance Trips
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electric vehicle, fast charge, Optimization, Simulation
Battery electric vehicles offer many advantages in terms of performance and zero-emission pollutants, but their limited range for long-distance trips compromises their large-scale market penetration. The problem of range can be solved with a dense network of fast-charging stations and an increase in embedded battery capacity. Simultaneously, improvements in high-power charging point units offer range gains of hundreds of kilometers in a mere 20 min. One risk remains: The travel time depends on the availability of charging stations, which can drop during rush hours, due to long queues, or power grid constraints. These situations could significantly affect the user experience. In this paper, we presented an approach to coordinate EV charging station choices in the case of long-distance trips. This system relies on vehicle-to-infrastructure communications (V2X). The objective is to enhance the use of the infrastructure by improving the distribution of vehicles between the different chargi... [more]

Optimum Railway Transition Curves—Method of the Assessment and Results
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Optimization, railway transition curve, Simulation
This article discusses the optimization of railway transition curves, through the application of polynomials of 9th and 11th degrees. In this work, the authors use a 2-axle rail vehicle model combined with mathematically understood optimization methods. This model is used to simulate rail vehicle movement negotiating both a transition curve and circular arc. Passenger comfort is applied as the criterion to assess which transition is actually is the best one. The 4-axle vehicle was also used to verify the results obtained using the 2-axle vehicle. Our results show that the traditionally used in a railway engineering transition—3rd degree parabola—which is not always the optimum curve. This fact is especially valid for the longest curves, with lengths greater than 150 m. For such cases, the transition curves similar to standard curves of 9th and 11th degrees is the optimum ones. This result is confirmed by the use of the 4-axle vehicle.

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: ANN, DWSIM, hydrogenation of carbon dioxide, Simulation
The objective of this research was to design a neural network (ANN) to predict the methanol flux at the outlet of a carbon dioxide dehydrogenation plant. For the development of the ANN, a database was generated, in the open-source simulation software “DWSIM”, from the validation of a process described in the literature. The sample consists of 133 data pairs with four inputs: reactor pressure and temperature, mass flow of carbon dioxide and hydrogen, and one output: flow of methanol. The ANN was designed using 12 neurons in the hidden layer and it was trained with the Levenberg−Marquardt algorithm. In the training, validation and testing phase, a global mean square (RMSE) value of 0.0085 and a global regression coefficient R of 0.9442 were obtained. The network was validated through an analysis of variance (ANOVA), where the p-value for all cases was greater than 0.05, which indicates that there are no significant differences between the observations and those predicted by the ANN. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carnot battery, fluid mass flow, part load, Simulation, temperature, thermal energy storage
Pumped Thermal Energy Storages (PTES) are suitable for bridging temporary energy shortages, which may occur due to the utilization of renewable energy sources. A combined heat pump (HP)-Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system with suitable thermal storage offers a favorable way to store energy for small to medium sized applications. To address the aspect of flexibility, the part load behavior of a combined HP-ORC system, both having R1233zd(E) (Trans-1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene) as working fluid and being connected through a water filled sensible thermal energy storage, is investigated using a MATLAB code with integration of the fluid database REFPROP. The influence on the isentropic efficiency of the working machines and therefore the power to power efficiency (P2P) of the complete system is shown by variation of the mass flow and a temperature drop in the thermal storage. Further machine-specific parameters such as volumetric efficiency and internal leakage efficiency are also conside... [more]

In order to tap the world wide offshore wind resources above deep waters, cost efficient floating platforms are inevitable. Tension-Leg Platforms (TLPs) could enable that crucial cost reduction in floating wind due to their smaller size and lighter weight compared to spars and semi-submersibles. The continuous development of the GICON®-TLP is driven by computer-aided engineering. So-called aero-hydro-servo-elastic coupled simulations are state-of-the-art for predicting loads and simulating the global system behavior for floating offshore wind turbines. Considering the complexity of such simulations, it is good scientific praxis to validate these numerical calculations by use of scaled model testing. This paper addresses the setup of the scaled model testing as carried out at the offshore basin of the École Centrale de Nantes, as well as the numerical model for the GICON®-TLP. The results of dedicated decay tests of the scaled model are used to validate the computational model at the fi... [more]

Accessible Battery Model with Aging Dependency
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aging parameters, battery, electric power storage system, Simulation, temperature
Designed to store and discharge electrical energy, rechargeable batteries consist of elementary storage cell assemblies. Aging is affected by various aggravating factors, mainly temperature. There are many electric or electrochemical models which describe their operation. Most standard models do not consider the aging phenomena of batteries and their consequences, while batteries deteriorate when used or stored. Precisely, most battery models do not simulate the influence of cell aging on other cells. The model presented in this paper incorporates aging and the effects of mutual interactions between cells. The model can be established based on four measurement points on the cell characteristic curve and allows the simulation of a single cell’s or multiple coupled cells’ behavior. The model can then be easily implemented in simulation software like Matlab.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aquifer thermal energy storage system, demand response, efficient operation method, Simulation, water heat pump
The mass introduction of renewable energy is essential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We examined an operation method that combines the surplus energy of photovoltaic power generation using demand response (DR), which recognizes the balance between power supply and demand, with an aquifer heat storage system. In the case that predicts the occurrence of DR and performs DR storage and heat dissipation operation, the result was an operation that can suppress daytime power consumption without increasing total power consumption. Case 1-2, which performs nighttime heat storage operation for about 6 h, has become an operation that suppresses daytime power consumption by more than 60%. Furthermore, the increase in total power consumption was suppressed by combining DR heat storage operation. The long night heat storage operation did not use up the heat storage amount. Therefore, it is recommended to the heat storage operation at night as much as possible before DR occurs. In the target ar... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control systems, flight dynamics, guided missile, Kalman filter, LQR control, mechatronics, Simulation
The paper presents the concept of controlling the designed optoelectronic scanning and tracking seeker. The above device is intended for the so-called passive guidance of short-range anti-aircraft missiles to various types of air maneuvering targets. In the presented control method, the modified linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) and the estimation of input signals using the extended Kalman filter (EKF) were used. The LQR regulation utilizes linearization of the mathematical model of the above-mentioned seeker by means of the so-called Jacobians. What is more, in order to improve the stability of the seeker control, vector selection of signals received by the optoelectronic system was used, which also utilized EKF. The results of the research are presented in a graphical form. Numerical simulations were carried out on the basis of the author’s own program developed in the programming language C++.

This paper describes an ejector model for the prediction of on-design performance under available conditions. This is a direct method of calculating the optimal ejector performance (entrainment ratio or ER) without the need for iterative methods, which have been conventionally used. The values of three ejector efficiencies used to account for losses in the ejector are calculated by using a systematic approach (by employing CFD analysis) rather than the hit and trial method. Both experimental and analytical data from literature are used to validate the presented analytical model with good agreement for on-design performance. R245fa working fluid has been used for low-grade heat applications, and Engineering Equation Solver (EES) has been employed for simulating the proposed model. The presented model is suitable for integration with any thermal system model and its optimization because of its direct, non-iterative methodology. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bioenergy, Biomass, communities, cost sharing, Optimization, quantity discounts, Simulation, supply chain coordination, system dynamics
Biomass is an abundant energy source, particularly in Canada, as an alternative or primary source for electricity generation. However, low economy of scale could cause a loss of efficiency for bioenergy adoption in small remote communities. In this sense, coordination among the players could promote the efficiency and profitability of bioenergy supply chains for these communities. There are different coordination strategies with varying impacts on supply chain players’ profit or cost. Therefore, analyzing and comparing them could provide insights on how to decide about the choice of coordination strategy. In doing so, this study considers the coordination strategies of quantity discounts and cost-sharing. The study adopts a system dynamics approach for simulating these coordination scenarios, obtaining their corresponding optimal supply chain decisions, followed by a comparative analysis. For a case study, the study considers multiple suppliers providing biomass for electricity generat... [more]

The behaviour of partial discharge as consequences of an alternating current (AC) is already well defined. AC partial discharges have completely different behaviour, background physics and parameters than partial discharges (PD) under direct current (DC) stress. This paper focuses on the most used and promising evaluation method of the PD DC stress—pulse sequence analysis (PSA). The first step is understanding and verifying the mechanisms and principles of this method. It is provided by well-known fundamentals of AC PD and by comparison with the other diagnostic and fault-locating methods such as phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) and pulse diagrams. The paper shows the PSA simulations and PD analyses performed at AC and partly at DC test conditions on typical PD test arrangements such as corona, surface and internal discharges. Keywords: control, EMS, microgrid, MPC, Simulation
An Energy Management System (EMS) that uses a Model Predictive Control (MPC) to manage the flow of the microgrids is described in this work. The EMS integrates both wind speed and solar radiation predictors by using a time series to perform the primary grid forecasts. At each sampling data measurement, the power of the photovoltaic system and wind turbine are predicted. Then, the MPC algorithm uses those predictions to obtain the optimal power flows of the microgrid elements and the main network. In this work, three time-series predictors are analyzed. To further the development of low-enriched uranium fuels, precedence has been placed on delivering the same amount of power while lowering the fuel temperature and radial temperature gradient. To address this, modeling efforts have resulted in a novel design featuring conductive fins of varying thermal conductivities and geometries inserted into the fuel matrix. These conductive inserts were not allowed to exceed 6% of the original fuel volume. This constraint was imposed due to other designs displacing 10% of fuel volume. A parametric study was performed that consisted of 2.56 million BISON simulations involving varying fin characteristics (i.e., fin thermal conductivity, number, and geometry) to determine the optimal geometric configuration for a desired amount of fuel volume displaced. The results from this study show that the thickness and length of each fin affect the fuel temperature and temperature gradient more than varying the number and thermal conductivity of the fins.
