The Influence of Co-Fermentation of Agri-Food Waste with Primary Sludge on Biogas Production and Composition of the Liquid Fraction of Digestate
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: biogas plant, co-fermentation, energy balance, organic nitrogen fractionation, wastewater treatment plant
Energy self-sufficiency is a current trend in wastewater treatment plants. This effect can be achieved by increasing the production of electricity from biogas and by reducing energy consumption for technological processes. One idea, in line with the circular economy concept, is the use of waste rich in organic matter as co-substrates for the fermentation process. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of waste co-fermentation on biogas production and nitrogen concentration in the reject water. A co-fermentation process with flotate or flotate and vegetables increased biogas production compared to primary sludge by 162 and 180%, respectively. During the tests, there was no inhibition of the fermentation process. Hydrolysis of organic compounds contained in flotate and vegetables resulted in a significant increase in ammonium nitrogen (by 80−100%) and dissolved organic nitrogen concentration (by 170−180%). The biogas and methane production rate as well as the ammonium and tota... [more]

A Diesel Engine with a Catalytic Piston Surface to Propel Small Aircraft at High Altitudes—A Theoretical Study
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diesel engine, flight ceiling, in-cylinder steam reforming, small aircraft
Due to the oxygen shortage at high altitudes, the use of diesel engines in small aircraft is limited to a low ceiling level. Here, we propose to significantly extend the ceiling level by introducing an in-cylinder steam reforming system. In this arrangement, the fuel direct-injection assembly comprises of a two-stage process. In the first stage, a blend of methanol and water is injected into the hot previously compressed cylinder charge onto an in-cylinder catalyst. Residual heat is absorbed due to the blend evaporation and the steam-reforming process to produce hydrogen. In the second stage, diesel fuel with a lower ignition temperature than the hydrogen fuel is injected to initiate combustion, while the absorbed heat (from the first stage) is released through the hydrogen oxidation. Essentially, the absorbed heat is exploited to produce extra hydrogen fuel, which increases the cycle efficiency. In this arrangement, the in-cylinder oxygen content is significantly increased due to the... [more]

In Situ Evaluation of the U-Value of a Window Using the Infrared Method
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy remodeling of existing houses, in situ, ISO 9869-1: HFM (heat flow meter), ISO 9869-2: IR (infrared method), U-value, window
The amount of heat lost through the envelope of a building is one of the most important variables that affects the energy performance evaluation of a house. In addition, it is especially important to estimate and accurately diagnose the amount of heat produced by windows. In Korea, windows’ U-values reflect a building’s initial design values and thermal characteristics that determine the thermal performance of an existing building, and is a factor that can overestimate the energy performance of a building. Therefore, there is a need for a field measurement method that can accurately measure the total U-value of windows in an existing house. This study provides a method of quantitatively measuring the total U-value of windows using the infrared (IR) method in ISO 9869-2. As a result of measuring the U-value using the infrared (IR) method, the Korean Standard (KS F 2278) for window performance test result values and the root mean square error (cvRMSE) for the U-value measurements using t... Strategically Targeting Plug-In Electric Vehicle Rebates and Outreach Using “EV Convert” Characteristics
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: adopter characteristics, consumer segment, electric vehicle, EV, incentive design, outreach strategy
To expand markets for plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) beyond enthusiastic early adopters, investments must be strategic. This research characterizes a segment of EV adoption that points the way toward the mainstream: EV consumers with low or no initial interest in EVs, or “EV Converts.” Logistic regression is utilized to profile EV Convert demographic, household, and regional characteristics; vehicle-transaction details; and purchase motivations—based on 2016−2017 survey data characterizing 5447 rebated California EV consumers. Explanatory factors are rank-ordered—separately for battery EVs (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs), to inform targeted outreach and incentive design. EV Converts tend to have relatively “lower” values on factors that might have otherwise “pre-converted” them to EV interest: hours researching EVs online; motivation from environmental impacts and carpool-lane access; and solar ownership. PHEV Converts more closely resemble new-car buyers than other EV adopters,... [more]

Modeling Control and Robustness Assessment of Multilevel Flying-Capacitor Converters
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: control, Dynamic Modelling, multilevel flying-capacitor converter, robustness assessment, voltage balancing capability
When performing AC/DC-DC/AC power conversions, multilevel converters provide several advantages as compared to classical two-level converters. This paper deals with the dynamic modeling, control, and robustness assessment of multilevel flying-capacitor converters. The dynamic model is derived using the Power-Oriented Graphs modeling technique, which provides the user with block schemes that are directly implementable in the Matlab/Simulink environment by employing standard Simulink libraries. The performed robustness assessment has led to the proposal of a divergence index, which allows for evaluating the voltage balancing capability of the converter using different voltage vector configurations for the extended operation of the converter, namely when the number of output voltage levels is increased for a given number of capacitors. A new variable-step control algorithm is then proposed. The variable-step control algorithm safely enables the converter extended operation, which prevents... [more]

Application of a Polyacrylate Latex to a Lithium Iron Phosphate Cathode as a Binder Material
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: emulsified water-based binder, lithium iron phosphate cathode, lithium-ion battery, polyacrylate latex
In the manufacturing process of lithium-ion batteries, the current organic solvent-based processes will inevitably be replaced with eco-friendly water-based processes. For this purpose, the current organic-soluble binder should be replaced with a water-soluble or water-dispersed binder. In this study, a new polyacrylate latex dispersed in water was successfully applied as a binder of lithium-ion battery cathodes for the first time. One of the biggest advantages of the polyacrylate binder is that it is electrochemically stable at the working voltage of typical cathodes, unlike a conventional water-dispersed styrene-butadiene binder. This implies that the water-dispersed polyacrylate has no limitations for the usage of a cathodic binder. The performance of the polyacrylate binder for lithium iron phosphate cathodes was compared with those of a conventional organic-based polyvinylidene fluoride binder as well as a water-dispersed styrene-butadiene binder. The polyacrylate binder exhibited... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, in-situ analysis, nanogrid, renewable energy storage (RES), small-scale plants, waste cooking oils
Small-scale plants that produce biodiesel have many social, economic and environmental advantages. Indeed, small plants significantly contribute to renewable energy production and rural development. Communities can use/reuse local raw materials and manage independently processes to obtain biofuels by essential, simple, flexible and cheap tools for self-supply. The review and understanding of recent plants of small biodiesel production is essential to identify limitations and critical units for improvement of the current process. Biodiesel production consists of four main stages, that are pre-treatment of oils, reaction, separation of products and biodiesel purification. Among lots of possibilities, waste cooking oils were chosen as cheap and green sources to produce biodiesel by base-catalyzed transesterification in a batch reactor. In this paper an overview on small-scale production plants is presented with the aim to put in evidence process, materials, control systems, energy consump... [more]

Validation of Sea-Surface Temperature Data for Potential OTEC Deployment in the Mexican Pacific
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: OTEC cycle, sea surface temperature, thermal gradient
As the operation of an ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) plant depends on the temperature gradient between the surface and deeper water (SST), a variation in SST can significantly modify the energy produced. The aim of this paper is to present a comparative analysis of three sea-surface temperature databases (World Ocean Atlas (WOA), Satellite Oceanic Monitoring System (SATMO), and in situ sensor measurements). Simple linear regression and graphic comparisons allow correlations to be made between the distribution patterns of the SST data. The results show that there is no statistically significant difference between the three databases. To determine general regions where OTEC implementation is possible, at the macroscale, the WOA database is recommended, as a smaller amount of data must be analyzed. For meso- and microscales, such as specific areas of the Mexican exclusive economic zone. It is better to use SATMO and in situ measurements as a higher spatial resolution is required.

Life Cycle Assessment for Supporting Eco-Design: The Case Study of Sodium−Nickel Chloride Cells
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environmental impact, environmental sustainability, life cycle assessment, sodium–nickel chloride cells
The European Union is moving towards a sustainable, decarbonized, and circular economy. It has identified seven key value chains in which to intervene, with the battery and vehicle value chain being one of them. Thus, actions and strategies for the sustainability of batteries need to be developed. Since Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a strategic tool for evaluating environmental sustainability, this paper investigates its application to two configurations of a sodium−nickel chloride cell (planar and tubular), focusing on the active material and the anode, with the purpose of identifying the configuration characterized by the lowest environmental impacts. The results, based on a “from cradle to gate” approach, showed that the tubular cell performs better for all environmental impact categories measured except for particulate matter, acidification, and resource depletion. With nickel being the main contributor to these impact categories, future sustainable strategies need to be oriented... [more]

Keywords: base stations, battery storage device, cellular networks, photovoltaic system
Satisfying the mobile traffic demand in next generation cellular networks increases the cost of energy supply. Renewable energy sources are a promising solution to power base stations in a self-sufficient and cost-effective manner. This paper presents an optimal method for designing a photovoltaic (PV)-battery system to supply base stations in cellular networks. A systematic approach is proposed for determining the power rating of the photovoltaic generator and battery capacity from a technical and economical point of view in order to minimize investment cost as well as operational expenditure, while the power autonomy of the PV-battery system is maximized in a multi-objective optimization framework. The proposed method is applied to optimally size a photovoltaic-battery system for three cases with different availability of solar power to investigate the effect of environmental conditions. Short-Term Wind Power Prediction for Wind Farm Clusters Based on SFFS Feature Selection and BLSTM Deep Learning
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: BLSTM, deep learning, feature selection, wind farm clusters, wind power prediction
Wind power prediction (WPP) of wind farm clusters is important to the safe operation and economic dispatch of the power system, but it faces two challenges: (1) The dimensions of the input parameters for WPP of wind farm clusters are very high so that the input parameters contain irrelevant or redundant features; (2) it is difficult to build a holistic WPP model with high-dimensional input parameters for wind farm clusters. To overcome these challenges, a novel short-term WPP model for wind farm clusters, based on sequential floating forward selection (SFFS) feature selection and bidirectional long short-term memory (BLSTM) deep learning, is proposed in this paper. First, more than 300,000 input features of the wind farm cluster are constructed. Second, the SFFS method is applied to sort the high-dimensional features and analyze the rule that the forecasting accuracy changes with the number of features to obtain the optimal number of features and feature sets. April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ground heat exchanger, heat exchanger rate, low-depth modular GHX, real-scale experiment
A ground source heat pump system is a high-performance technology used for maintaining a stable underground temperature all year-round. However, the high costs for installation, such as for boring and drilling, is a drawback that prevents the system to be rapidly introduced into the market. This study proposes a modular ground heat exchanger (GHX) that can compensate for the disadvantages (such as high-boring/drilling costs) of the conventional vertical GHX. Through a real-scale experiment, a modular GHX was manufactured and buried at a depth of 4 m below ground level; the heat exchange rate and the change in underground temperatures during the GHX operation were tracked and calculated. The average heat exchanges rate was 78.98 W/m and 88.83 W/m during heating and cooling periods, respectively; the underground temperature decreased by 1.2 °C during heat extraction and increased by 4.4 °C during heat emission, with the heat pump (HP) working. Multi-Electrode Architecture Modeling and Optimization for Homogeneous Electroporation of Large Volumes of Tissue
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electromagnetic fields, electroporation, finite element methods
Electroporation is a phenomenon that consists of increasing the permeability of the cell membrane by means of high-intensity electric field application. Nowadays, its clinical application to cancer treatment is one of the most relevant branches within the many areas of electroporation. In this area, it is essential to apply homogeneous treatments to achieve complete removal of tumors and avoid relapse. It is necessary to apply an optimized transmembrane potential at each point of the tissue by means of a homogenous electric field application and appropriated electric field orientation. Nevertheless, biological tissues are composed of wide variety, heterogeneous and anisotropic structures and, consequently, predicting the applied electric field distribution is complex. Consequently, by applying the parallel-needle electrodes and single-output generators, homogeneous and predictable treatments are difficult to obtain, often requiring several repositioning/application processes that may l... Optimization of a Gate Distribution Layout to Compensate the Current Imbalance Generated by the 3D Geometry of a Railway Inverter
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: 3D layout, coupling, Optimization, paralleling devices, PEEC method, power electronics, stray inductance
The impact of the stray inductances originated from interconnects in power electronics becomes crucial with the next generation of SiC devices. This paper shows that the existing layout of a railway inverter, operating with Si IGBTs already exhibits a dynamic current imbalance between paralleled modules. This will not allow using this geometry with SiC MOSFETs. A complete investigation of the electromagnetic origin of this issue has been performed. A generic circuit model has been proposed to establish a cabling rule to design a Gate Distribution Printed Circuit Board (PCB) in such a way that it compensates the power dissymmetry. An optimization strategy has been used to obtain a new geometry of this PCB, which has been validated with a time domain simulation.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dual-bridge, isolated DC–DC converter, LLC resonant converter, photovoltaics, power optimizer, wide voltage range
This paper proposes a photovoltaic (PV) string-level isolated DC−DC power optimizer with wide voltage range. A hybrid control scheme in which pulse frequency modulation (PFM) control and pulse width modulation (PWM) control are combined with a variable switching frequency is employed to regulate the wide PV voltage range. By adjusting the switching frequency in the above region during the PWM control process, the circulating current period can be eliminated and the turn-on period of the bidirectional switch of the dual-bridge LLC (DBLLC) resonant converter is reduced compared to that with a conventional PWM control scheme with a fixed switching frequency, resulting in better switching and conduction loss. Soft start-up control under a no-load condition is proposed to charge the DC-link electrolytic capacitor from 0 V. Analysis of Heat Flux Distribution during Brush Seal Rubbing Using CFD with Porous Media Approach
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: brush seal, Computational Fluid Dynamics, heat flux distribution, porous media, rubbing
This paper discusses the question of heat flux distribution between bristle package and rotor during a rubbing event. A three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (3D CFD) model of the brush seal test rig installed at the Institute of Thermal Turbomachinery (ITS) was created. The bristle package is modelled as a porous medium with local non-thermal equilibrium. The model is used to numerically recalculate experimentally conducted rub tests on the ITS test rig. The experimentally determined total frictional power loss serves as an input parameter to the numerical calculation. By means of statistical evaluation methods, the ma in influences on the heat flux distribution and the maximum temperature in the frictional contact are determined. The heat conductivity of the rotor material, the heat transfer coefficients at the bristles and the rubbing surface were identified as the dominant factors.

Effect of LCA Data Sources on GBRS Reference Values: The Envelope of an Italian Passive House
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Active House, embedded impacts, Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), Green Building Rating Systems (GBRS), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Passive House, sustainable buildings
Scientific literature provides evidence that mitigating the effects of a building’s operation does not in itself ensure an overall improvement in its environmental performance. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) plays a key role in gauging the overall environmental performance of a building although several authors argue that the lack of LCA threshold values makes it difficult to compare design options or measure whether reduced impact targets are achieved. This has led the Green Building Rating Systems (GBRS) to include the LCA within their evaluation criteria and, in like Active House (AH), establish threshold values of the main impact categories to quantify the level of performance achieved. Since the reliability of the data sources is a crucial issue for applying the LCA method, the effectiveness of their implementation within the GBRS also strictly depends on the origin of the impact values. To quantify the extent to which the source affects the impacts calculated by the LCA threshold... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diffusion processes, gasification, thermogravimetry, thermokinetic analysis
This study presents experimental studies of charcoal gasification with CO2 at different heating rates (1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 K min−1). The kinetics of the reaction C + CO2 under pore-diffusion control is studied. We propose a new method for the proper determination of activation energy during the processing of thermogravimetric curves of porous carbon gasification under conditions of pore-diffusion resistance. The results of the inverse kinetic problem solution are compared with different hypotheses about the regime of the investigated heterogeneous reaction process (kinetic, diffusion, pore-diffusion). The change of reaction regimes from kinetic to diffusion is detected during charcoal gasification at different heating rates. At heating rates of 5−20 K min−1, the values of activation energy of carbon gasification reaction in the carbon dioxide atmosphere, obtained by the proposed method, closely match the data found in the previous studies. Reaching Law Based Sliding Mode Control of Sampled Time Systems
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: reaching law approach, sampled time systems, sliding mode control
In this paper, discrete time reaching law-based sliding mode control of continuous time systems is considered. In sliding mode control methods, usually the assumption of bounded absolute values of disturbances is used. However in many cases, the rate of change of the disturbance is also bounded. In the presented approach, this knowledge is used to improve the control precision and reduce the undesirable chattering. Another advantage of the proposed method is that the disturbance does not have to satisfy the matching conditions. In the paper two new reaching laws are analyzed, one of them ensures the switching quasi-sliding motion and the other the non-switching motion. For both of them, the robustness is assessed by calculating the quasi-sliding mode band width, as well as the greatest possible state error values. Specifically, the state errors are not considered only at the sampling instants, as is usual for discrete time systems, but the bounds on the continuous values “between” the... [more]
