Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) of Seaweed (Macroalgae) for Producing Hydrochar
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bio-coal, biomass conversion, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, seaweed, wet biomass
Waste seaweed that is collected at coastal regions of maritime provinces in Canada is creating ecological problems as it promotes an anoxic event, which produces nearly zero dissolved oxygen in water along with hydrogen sulfide emission. The work done in this study attempts to address this issue by producing a coal-like solid hydrochar and nutritious liquid slurry (processed water) by employing a rather recent thermo-chemical process called hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) on the seaweed. The HTC was carried out in a batch reactor system for three different reaction temperatures, 180 °C, 200 °C, 220 °C, and three different reaction times, 30, 60, and 120 min. Each of the produced hydrochars was characterized by different analytical methods. The effects of the process conditions on the yield and the properties of the hydrochar and process water were examined. The hydrochar produced at 220 °C and 120 min showed the highest carbon content (48.5%) and heating value (18.93 MJ/kg). The energ... [more]

Modelling of Coupled Heat and Mass Transfer in a Water-Cooled Falling-Film Absorber Working with an Aqueous Alkaline Nitrate Solution
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: absorber modelling, alkitrate, aqueous nitrate solution, heat and mass transfer, horizontal tube falling-film absorber, thermal cooling
A theoretical model was developed to investigate a falling-film absorber on horizontal tubes with an aqueous alkaline nitrate solution as working fluid. The absorbent, composed of an aqueous solution of nitrates (Li, K, Na) in salt mass percentages of 53%, 28%, and 19% respectively, offers favourable thermal stability, corrosiveness, and heat and mass transfer conditions which can be appropriate for absorption cooling cycles driven by high-temperature heat sources. The mathematical model developed characterises the heat and mass transfer processes and the flow regime effect (droplet-formation, droplet-fall, and falling-film) on the falling-film absorber. The results show the importance of the falling-film and droplet-formation flow regimes in the absorption process. The solution temperature and concentration profiles inside the absorber were established together with their values at the exit. The results obtained by the theoretical model were well in agreement with the experimental dat... [more]

Observation of the Main Natural Parameters Influencing the Formation of Gas Hydrates
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Antarctic sediment samples, gas hydrate, salinity, water chemistry
Chemical composition in seawater of marine sediments, as well as the physical properties and chemical composition of soils, influence the phase behavior of natural gas hydrate by disturbing the hydrogen bond network in the water-rich phase before hydrate formation. In this article, some marine sediments samples, collected in National Antarctic Museum in Trieste, were analyzed and properties such as pH, conductivity, salinity, and concentration of main elements of water present in the sediments are reported. The results, obtained by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and ion chromatography (IC) analysis, show that the more abundant cation is sodium and, present in smaller quantities, but not negligible, are calcium, potassium, and magnesium, while the more abundant anion is chloride and sulfate is also appreciable. These results were successively used to determine the thermodynamic parameters and the effect on salinity of water on hydrates’ formation. Then, hydrate fo... [more]

An Open Circuit Voltage Model Fusion Method for State of Charge Estimation of Lithium-Ion Batteries
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive cubature Kalman filter, electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, model fusion, open circuit voltage, state of charge
The mapping between open circuit voltage (OCV) and state of charge (SOC) is critical to the lithium-ion battery management system (BMS) for electric vehicles. In order to solve the poor accuracy in the local SOC range of most OCV models, an OCV model fusion method for SOC estimation is proposed. According to the characteristics of the experimental OCV−SOC curve, the method divides SOC interval (0, 100%) into several sub-intervals, and respectively fits the OCV curve segments in each sub-interval to obtain a corresponding number of OCV sub-models with local high precision. After that, the OCV sub-models are fused through the continuous weight function to obtain fusional OCV model. Regarding the OCV curve obtained from low-current OCV test as the criterion, the fusional OCV models of LiNiMnCoO2 (NMC) and LiFePO4 (LFP) are compared separately with the conventional OCV models. The comparison shows great fitting accuracy of the fusional OCV model. Furthermore, the adaptive cubature Kalman f... [more]

Europeanization Processes of the EU Energy Policy in Visegrad Countries in the Years 2005−2018
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy policy, EU studies, Europeanization, the European Union, Visegrad countries
Energy issues are sensitive for the four Visegrad countries as European Union (EU) member states; thus, this area’s convergence might be problematic for these countries. There is a clear research gap concerning the processes of Europeanization of the energy policy in the Visegrad countries. This article aims to identify and evaluate the progress of four Visegrad countries (V4) in implementing the EU energy goals in the context of the Europeanization. The article uses three main methods: Hellwig’s method, Kendall’s rank concordance coefficient, and k-means clustering. These calculations will allow one to study the Europeanization processes, which means checking the gamma convergence. For calculations, we use the available statistical data from Eurostat for the years 2005−2018. Poland and other Central European countries, including Czechia, and Hungary, largely depend on coal for their energy needs. The empirical results have shown that there have been no significant changes in the class... [more]

Electric Vehicle Charger Static and Dynamic Modelling for Power System Studies
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: curve fitting, dynamic load modelling, electric vehicle chargers, electric vehicles, load modelling
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly available and are expected to be a large part of the load in future power systems. EV chargers are a relatively new type of load and are mainly interfaced with the grid through power electronics. It is therefore important to investigate the impact they have on power system dynamic behaviour. In this paper, two detailed EV charger models (representing a typical slow and fast charger) were investigated. The aim was to test the capability of standard static—and more importantly, dynamic—load models, commonly used in power system studies, to represent the static and dynamic behaviour of EV chargers. Different control parameter settings for two types of EV chargers were investigated, as were the limits of standard power system dynamic load model structures’ accurate representation. Typical parameter sets have also been provided for cases where proper representation was possible.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: cathode material, intermediate temperature-solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs), LSCF, nanopowders, perovskite
The perovskite nanopowders of lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCF) have been synthesized using the alginate mediated ion-exchange process. This perovskite-based material is a promising cathode for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) due to its high electrical conductivity, low polarizability, high catalytic activity for oxygen reduction, enhanced chemical stability at an elevated temperature in high oxygen potential environment and high compatibility with the ceria based solid electrolytes. Phase pure LSCF 6428, LSCF 6455, and LSCF 6482 corresponding to La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ, La0.6Sr0.4Co0.5Fe0.5O3-δ, and La0.6Sr0.4Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ, respectively were successfully synthesized. The simultaneous thermal analysis (DSC-TGA) and XRD were used to determine the optimum calcination temperature for the dried ion-exchanged beads. Single phase nanopowders of LSCF (6428, 6455, and 6482) have been successfully prepared at a calcination temperature of 700 °C. The TGA anal... [more]

Evaluation of Building Energy Performance with Optimal Control of Movable Shading Device Integrated with PV System
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network, movable shading device, optimal control, photovoltaic system, window heat transfer
Among the envelope components (e.g., walls, roofs, floors, and windows, etc.) affecting the cooling and heating load of buildings, windows are the most thermally vulnerable. Shading devices can minimize the thermal load on windows due to solar radiation and decrease radiation effects. However, the load changes due to convection and conduction should be considered. Therefore, when a shading device is applied to a window, control logic for thermal blocking and heat retention is necessary to prevent the load changes. In addition, by combining the opposite features of photovoltaic (PV) that require solar radiation and the shading device to block solar radiation, energy-saving and production can be achieved simultaneously. Therefore, this study minimized the thermal effects of windows using a movable shading device integrated with PV and evaluated the PV power generation. This study evaluated the effects on window heat transfer by applying artificial intelligence techniques, which have rece... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy harvesting, hand-driven device, mechanical energy, triboelectric nanogenerator, Yo-Yo
Recently, as the demand for sustainable and renewable energy to power a large number of small electronics and sensors has increased, various mechanical energy harvesters such as electromagnetic, piezoelectric, and triboelectric generators have been highlighted because they have no environmental constraints to generate electricity and function as sustainable power sources. Among these generators, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which produce electrical energy via triboelectrification and electrostatic induction, are a promising energy harvesting technology that can utilize existing materials or the structure of existing commercial products. Considering the vast number of independent portable electronics used today, the development of hand-driven TENGs is important. There is great demand for TENG considering both commercial product-inspired designs, which are the merit of TENG itself, and the hand-driven type. However, relevant studies are still lacking, and therefore further studi... [more]

Biomass Sea-Based Supply Chains and the Secondary Ports in the Era of Decarbonization
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Biomass, decarbonization, overseas sourcing, renewable energy sources, seaports, supply chains
One of the tools to attain the goal of climate-neutrality by 2050 by the European Union is increasing the share of renewable energy sources (RESs) in the energy mix of member states. A major part of the future bioenergy mix is to be played by biomass. As many hazards have been pointed out when using forest biomass, particular attention is paid to the potential of agro biomass. However, as agro biomass is sourced mostly locally, the supply may not be sufficient to meet the growing demand. Therefore, international trade (including overseas) might become increasingly important to meet the EU renewable energy targets. In this context, it is seaports that may play a major part in developing biomass supply chains. The main purpose of the article is to fill the research gap by identifying the pros and cons for the development of biomass sea-based supply chains through secondary ports and specifying their relevance from the perspective of major stakeholders in the context of decarbonization pr... Evolutionary Hybrid System for Energy Consumption Forecasting for Smart Meters
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: energy consumption, forecasting, hybrid systems, Machine Learning, smart metering, statistical models, time series
The usage of smart grids is growing steadily around the world. This technology has been proposed as a promising solution to enhance energy efficiency and improve consumption management in buildings. Such benefits are usually associated with the ability of accurately forecasting energy demand. However, the energy consumption series forecasting is a challenge for statistical linear and Machine Learning (ML) techniques due to temporal fluctuations and the presence of linear and non-linear patterns. Traditional statistical techniques are able to model linear patterns, while obtaining poor results in forecasting the non-linear component of the time series. ML techniques are data-driven and can model non-linear patterns, but their feature selection process and parameter specification are a complex task. This paper proposes an Evolutionary Hybrid System (EvoHyS) which combines statistical and ML techniques through error series modeling. EvoHyS is composed of three phases: (i) forecast of the... Increasing Access to Electricity: An Assessment of the Energy and Power Generation Potential from Biomass Waste Residues in Tanzania
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, Biomass, electrification, energy potential, gasification, Tanzania
Tanzania has a high rural population, of which many rely on off-grid diesel generators to produce electricity. The focus of this paper is to assess if the waste biomass residues in Tanzania have sufficient energy potential to produce renewable electrical energy for small-scale electricity generation using off-grid diesel generators coupled with anaerobic digestion (AD) and/or gasification. The gaseous fuel produced can then be used to substitute diesel fuel used in small-scale dual fuel diesel gen-sets; thus, providing more affordable electricity whilst reducing dependency on fossil fuels. The biomass waste streams estimated are those arising from agriculture, forestry, livestock, and urban human waste. To answer this question, the energy potentials of each of these biomass waste streams are quantified, followed by further calculations to determine the electricity generation capacity per stream based on overall efficiencies of 10 and 25%. The results show that combined these waste stre... [more]

Three-Dimensional Electro-Thermal Analysis of a New Type Current Transformer Design for Power Distribution Networks
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: current transformer, electro-thermal coupling, finite element analysis, thermal field
In recent years, the new type design of current transformer with bushing structure has been widely used in the distribution network system due to its advantages of miniaturization, high mechanical strength, maintenance-free, safety and environmental protection. The internal temperature field distribution is an important characteristic parameter to characterize the thermal insulation and aging performance of the transformer, and the internal temperature field distribution is mainly derived from the joule heat generated by the primary side guide rod after flowing through the current. Since the electric environment is a transient field and the thermal environment changes slowly with time as a steady field under the actual conditions, it is more complex and necessary to study the electrothermal coupling field of current transformer (CT). In this paper, a 3D simulation model of a new type design of current transformer for distribution network based on electric-thermal coupling is establishe... [more]

Adaptive Robust Fault-Tolerant Control Design for Wind Turbines Subject to Pitch Actuator Faults
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive gain, fault tolerant control, pitch actuator, sliding mode control, wind turbine
This paper proposes an adaptive fault tolerant control (FTC) design for a variable speed wind turbine (WT) operating in the high wind speeds region. It aims at mitigating pitch actuator faults and regulating the generator power to its rated value, thereby reducing the mechanical stress in the high wind speeds region. The proposed FTC design implements a sliding mode control (SMC) approach with an adaptation law that estimates the upper bounds of the uncertainties. System stability and uniform boundedness of the outputs was proven using the Lyapunov stability theory. The proposed approach was validated on a 5 MW three-blade wind turbine modeled using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures and Turbulence (FAST) wind turbine simulator. The controller’s performance was assessed in the presence of several pitch actuator faults and turbulent wind conditions. Its performance was also compared to that of a standard SMC approach. This paper assesses the potential environmental effects of the optimization of the kitchen waste management in Opole. The separate collection of kitchen waste is improved by distribution of separate collection kits consisting of an in-home bin and 10 L biodegradable bags. The surplus of collected kitchen waste is diverted from treatment in a mechanical-biological pretreatment (MBP) along with the residual waste to anaerobic digestion (AD) with the biowaste. This has positive effects on European and Polish goals, ambitions, and targets, such as (i) increasing the level of renewables in the primary energy supply, (ii) decreasing the level of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, (iii) increasing the level of preparation for reuse and recycling of municipal waste. The environmental effects of 1 ton additionally separately collected and treated kitchen waste are determined by using life cycle assessment. Analysis of Multi-Stream Fuel Injector Flow Using Zonal Proper Orthogonal Decomposition
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas turbine fuel injector, modal analysis, multi-stream flows, proper orthogonal decomposition, swirling flow, ZPOD
The 3-component velocity distribution of two lean-burn gas turbine fuel injectors are measured at a planar location near and parallel to the injector outlet. The two injectors are nominally the same design, but one features blocked central passages to study the effects of the presence of multi-streams and reveal the single stream characteristics embedded within the multi-stream configuration. Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry is used in an isothermal, non-reacting water analogue flow facility at an engine relevant Reynolds number. The velocity data is analysed using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and the work introduces the concept of Zonal POD. This is the splitting of the velocity field into zones prior to the calculation of POD modes to better identify prominent structures and features associated with each zone. Because modes are sorted by the area averaged energy contribution, zoning of a velocity field of interest may change the individual modes and will almost certai... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: autonomous vehicles, deep learning, energy consumption, heterogeneous multicore, IoT, Scheduling, task mapping
With the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles have received much attention in recent years. Safe driving is one of the essential concerns of self-driving cars. The main problem in providing better safe driving requires an efficient inference system for real-time task management and autonomous control. This paper addressed these challenges and developed an intelligent task management system for IoT-based autonomous vehicles. For each task processing, a supervised resource predictor is invoked for optimal hardware cluster selection. Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy management, microgrids, nanogrids, power generation control, power management
Prosumers’ electrical installations (PEIs), as nanogrids and low-voltage microgrids, have gained importance in recent years following the development of standards such as the IEC 60364-8 series. In these systems, all distributed energy resources (DERs) are usually integrated using dc bus coupling. The IEC 60364-8-3 predicts an electrical energy management system (EEMS) for power-sharing. The overall research framework of this paper is the nanogrid power management, where complex algorithms are required, as well as the conventional state machines and hierarchical controls. However, the addition of new DERs in such systems is not straightforward due to the complicated parameter settings for energy usage optimization. A different control strategy, named price-based power management, has been conceived to make the EEMS scalable to include new sources and simplify parameterization. Since it is analogous to economic markets, most users understand the concepts and feel comfortable tuning para... [more]

Keywords: ball mill, drive system, electric motor, energetic efficiency, fluid coupling, grinding
Milling is among the most energy-consuming technological stages of copper ore processing. It is performed in mills, which are machines of high rotational masses. The start of a mill filled to capacity requires appropriate solutions that mitigate the overloading. One method for increasing the energy efficiency of ball mills is to optimize their drive systems. This article looks at two variants of drive systems with efficiencies higher than the already existing solutions. The first variant is a low-speed synchronous motor with permanent magnets without a gearbox, and the second variant is an asynchronous high-efficiency motor with a gearbox and a fluid coupling. The energy performance analysis of the three solutions was based on the average energy consumption indicator per mass unit of the milled material and on the energy consumption per hour. The investigations required models of the drive systems and analyses with the use of the Monte Carlo methods. The highest energy efficiency is ob... [more]

Behavior of Residual Current Devices at Frequencies up to 50 kHz
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: earth current, harmonics, high-frequency currents, protection against electric shock, residual current devices, testing
The use of residual current devices (RCDs) is obligatory in many types of low-voltage circuits. They are devices that ensure protection against electric shock in the case of indirect contact and may ensure additional protection in the case of direct contact. For the latter purpose of protection, only RCDs of a rated residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA are suitable. Unfortunately, modem current-using equipment supplied via electronic converters with a pulse width modulation produces earth fault currents composed of high-frequency components. Frequency of these components may have even several dozen kHz. Such components negatively influence the RCDs’ tripping level and, hence, protection against electric shock may be ineffective. This paper presents the results of the RCDs’ tripping test for frequencies up to 50 kHz. The results of the test have shown that many RCDs offered on the market are not able to trip for such frequencies. Such behavior was also noted for F-type and B-t... [more]

Thermal protection is still one of the key challenges for successful scramjet operations. In this study, the three-dimensional coupled heat transfer between high-temperature gas and regenerative cooling panel with kerosene of supercritical pressure flowing in the cooling channels was numerically investigated to reveal the fundamental characteristics of regenerative cooling as well as its influencing factors. The SST k-ω turbulence model with low-Reynolds-number correction provided by the pressure-based solver of Fluent 19.2 is adopted for simulation. It was found that the heat flux of the gas heated surface is in the order of 106 W/m2, and it declines along the flow direction of gas due to the development of boundary layer. Keywords: foam rheology, fracture conductivity, nitrogen foamed stimulation fluids, reservoir stimulation
In the case of fracturing of the reservoirs using fracturing fluids, the size of damage to the proppant conductivity caused by treatment fluids is significant, which greatly influence the effective execution of hydraulic fracturing operations. The fracturing fluid should be characterized by the minimum damage to the conductivity of a fracture filled with proppant. A laboratory research procedure has been developed to study the damage effect caused by foamed and non-foamed fracturing fluids in the fractures filled with proppant material. The paper discusses the results for high quality foamed guar-based linear gels, which is an innovative aspect of the work compared to the non-foamed frac described in most of the studies and simulations. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flow separation, model-based analysis, unsteady flow control, vibration wall
Vibration wall control is an important active flow control technique studied by many researchers. Although current researches have shown that the control performance is greatly affected by the frequency and amplitude of the vibration wall, the mechanism hiding behind the phenomena is still not clear, due to the complex interaction between the vibration wall and flow separation. To reveal the control mechanism of vibration walls, we propose a simplified model to help us understand the interaction between the forced excitation (from the vibration wall) and self-excitation (from flow instability). The simplified model can explain vibration wall flow control behaviors obtained by numerical simulation, which show that the control performance will be optimized at a certain reduced vibration frequency or amplitude. Also, it is shown by the analysis of maximal Lyapunov exponents that the vibration wall is able to change the flow field from a disordered one into an ordered one. Consistent with... [more]
