Blockchain Technology Applied to Energy Demand Response Service Tracking and Data Sharing
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: blockchain, data sharing coordination, demand response, distributed ledger technology, flexibility provision, hyperledger
Demand response (DR) services have the potential to enable large penetration of renewable energy by adjusting load consumption, thus providing balancing support to the grid. The success of such load flexibility provided by industry, communities, or prosumers and its integration in electricity markets, will depend on a redesign and adaptation of the current interactions between participants. New challenges are, however, bound to appear with the large scale contribution of smaller assets to flexibility, including, among others, the dispatch coordination, the validation of delivery of the DR provision, and the corresponding settlement of contracts, while assuring secured data access among interested parties. In this study we applied distributed ledger (DLT)/blockchain technology to securely track DR provision, focusing on the validation aspect, assuring data integrity, origin, fast registry, and sharing within a permissioned system, between all relevant parties (including transmission sys... A Design Method for the Cogging Torque Minimization of Permanent Magnet Machines with a Segmented Stator Core Based on ANN Surrogate Models
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural networks, cogging torque, finite element analysis, Genetic Algorithm, manufacturing tolerance, modular stator, permanent magnet machines, segmented stator, software design, surrogate models, tolerance analysis, topological optimization
Permanent magnet machines with segmented stator cores are affected by additional harmonic components of the cogging torque which cannot be minimized by conventional methods adopted for one-piece stator machines. In this study, a novel approach is proposed to minimize the cogging torque of such machines. This approach is based on the design of multiple independent shapes of the tooth tips through a topological optimization. Theoretical studies define a design formula that allows to choose the number of independent shapes to be designed, based on the number of stator core segments. Moreover, a computationally-efficient heuristic approach based on genetic algorithms and artificial neural network-based surrogate models solves the topological optimization and finds the optimal tooth tips shapes. Simulation studies with the finite element method validates the design formula and the effectiveness of the proposed method in suppressing the additional harmonic components. Moreover, a comparison... [more]

Investigating Preconditions for Sustainable Renewable Energy Product−Service Systems in Retail Electricity Markets
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Energy Product–Service Systems, energy transition, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, retail market
Energy transitions are complex and involve interrelated changes in the socio-technical dimensions of society. One major barrier to renewable energy transitions is lock-in from the incumbent socio-technical regime. This study evaluates Energy Product−Service Systems (EPSS) as a renewable energy market mechanism. EPSS offer electricity service performance instead of energy products and appliances for household consumers. Through consumers buying the service, the provider company is enabled to choose, manage and control electrical appliances for best-matched service delivery. Given the heterogenous market players and future uncertainties, this study aims to identify the necessary conditions to achieve a sustainable renewable energy market. Simulation-Based Design for EPSS framework is implemented to assess various hypothetical market conditions’ impact on market efficiency in the short term and long term. The results reveal the specific market characteristics that have a higher chance of... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Capture and Storage, energy system decarbonisation, PROMETHEUS model
The Paris Agreement has set out ambitious climate goals aiming to keep global warming well-below 2 °C by 2100. This requires a large-scale transformation of the global energy system based on the uptake of several technological options to reduce drastically emissions, including expansion of renewable energy, energy efficiency improvements, and fuel switch towards low-carbon energy carriers. The current study explores the role of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as a mitigation option, which provides a dispatchable source for carbon-free production of electricity and can also be used to decarbonise industrial processes. In the last decade, limited technology progress and slow deployment of CCS technologies worldwide have increased the concerns about the feasibility and potential for massive scale-up of CCS required for deep decarbonisation. The current study uses the state-of-the-art PROMETHEUS global energy demand and supply system model to examine the role and impacts of CCS deployment... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current modulator, diode rectifier, sinusoidal current, supporting system, three-phase system
The article presents various concepts of three-phase power rectifiers with improved quality of converted electric power. This effect is obtained by modulating the currents in the DC output circuits of the rectifiers by means of power electronics controlled voltage or current sources, working as a so-called voltage or current modulators. For further quality improvement of the grid currents of the analyzed systems, it was proposed to use an additional controlled current source connected in parallel to the DC load, hereinafter referred to as a supporting system. The original elaborated method of controlling this source (supporting system) was presented. The main goal of the work was to propose a solution for an effective method of improving the quality of energy conversion in rectifier systems, especially high power ones, by using controlled current sources in DC circuits, operating as the power electronics current modulator and the supporting system.

Catalytic Hot Gas Cleanup of Biomass Gasification Producer Gas via Steam Reforming Using Nickel-Supported Clay Minerals
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass gasification, clay, nickel montmorillonite, Steam Reforming, tar removal/conversion
Amongst the issues associated with the commercialization of biomass gasification, the presence of tars has been one of the most difficult aspects to address. Tars are an impurity generated from the gasifier and upon their condensation cause problems in downstream equipment including plugging, blockages, corrosion, and major catalyst deactivation. These problems lead to losses of efficiency as well as potential maintenance issues resulting from damaged processing units. Therefore, the removal of tars is necessary in order for the effective operation of a biomass gasification facility for the production of high-value fuel gas. The catalytic activity of montmorillonite and montmorillonite-supported nickel as tar removal catalysts will be investigated in this study. Ni-montmorillonite catalyst was prepared, characterized, and tested in a laboratory-scale reactor for its efficiency in reforming tars using naphthalene as a tar model compound. Efficacy of montmorillonite-supported nickel cata... [more]

A Combined CFD-FEM Approach to Predict Fluid-Borne Vibrations and Noise Radiation of a Rotary Vane Pump
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, FEM, noise radiation, NVH, rotary vane pump, vibroacoustic
The rising demand for lower noise emissions of car ancillary units due to electrification and higher customer expectations regarding driving comfort results in the need for more silent car components. Hydraulic driven car components in particular are often identified as a major source of noise in the system. Therefore, it is mandatory to investigate the noise sources inside the hydraulic system. In this work, a combined CFD-FEM approach is applied to estimate the flow-induced noise radiation of a mechanically driven transmission pump. To achieve this goal, the mapping procedure to hand over the pressure field from the CFD to the FEM mesh must be valid. For this purpose, the error during the mapping process is evaluated and different parameters, which influence the mapping results, are analyzed. Additionally, the impact of the time step size and the length of the time signal on the frequency resolution of the force signal is investigated to get an appropriate excitation force for the vi... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: blockchain technology, cloud computing, data security, Energy Efficiency, Internet of Things (IoT), public administration management
Blockchain technology is currently one of the trends considered to have a tremendous future ahead. It ensures data security, data sharing protection and automation development—elements that are of colossal importance in the era of cloud solutions, big data and Internet of Things (IoT) reality. Additionally, blockchain technology allows one to create new programmable ecosystems on an unprecedented scale. The implementation of blockchain technology leads not only to improving the flow of documents and data storage, as is the case with the creation of shared service centers (SSCs), but—as this paper shows—allows one to reduce the carbon footprint when servicing SSCs at a considerably higher organizational level at the same time. The example of an SSC in Elbląg, Poland, proves that cloud solutions enabling electronic documents flow and data storage combined with blockchain technology are tools essential for further SSCs development. Evaluating Variability of Ground Thermal Conductivity within a Steep Site by History Matching Underground Distributed Temperatures from Thermal Response Tests
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: distributed temperature sensor, ground thermal conductivity, groundwater flow, history matching, moving line heat source theory, thermal response test
The variability of ground thermal conductivity, based on underground conditions, is often ignored during the design of ground-source heat pump systems. This study shows a field evidence of such site-scale variations through thermal response tests in eight borehole heat exchangers aligned at a site on a terrace along the foothills of mountains in northern Japan. Conventional analysis of the overall ground thermal conductivity along the total installation length finds that the value at one borehole heat exchanger is 2.5 times that at the other seven boreholes. History matching analysis of underground distributed temperature measurements generates vertical partial ground thermal conductivity data for four depth layers. Based on the moving line heat source theory, the partial values are generally within a narrow range expected for gravel deposits. Darcy velocities of groundwater are estimated to be 74−204 m/y at the borehole with high conductivity, increasing in the shallow layers above a... [more]

Determinants of Enterprises’ Capital Structure in Energy Industry: Evidence from European Union
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: capital structure determinants, capital structure theories, energy industry, European Union, indebtedness of energy industry
The aim of the study is to identify the main determinants of the capital structure of energy industry companies in the European Union. The study was based on a panel of 6122 companies from 25 EU countries, operating between 2011 and 2018. The study used multiple regression analysis. We have obtained strong evidence for a positive relationship between corporate debt and tangibility and size, and a negative relationship for profitability and liquidity. The factors that also affect the share of debt in capital have turned out to be growth (positive relationship) and non-debt tax shield (negative relationship), but the statistical significance of these relationships is ambiguous. We have shown that growth of industry business risk is accompanied by an increase in corporate debt and this is a distinguishing feature of the energy industry. For country-specific capital structure determinants, we have obtained strong evidence for the negative relationship between GDP growth, the level of stake... [more]

Economic Emission Dispatch for Wind Power Integrated System with Carbon Trading Mechanism
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: carbon trading, EED, low-carbon, TOPSIS, wind power integration
Nowadays, the power system is faced with some new changes from low-carbon approaches, though these approaches have proved to be effective in developing low-carbon electricity. Specifically, wind power integration and carbon trading influence the traditional economic emission dispatch (EED) mode, allowing for the disturbance of wind power uncertainties and the fluctuation of carbon trading price. Aiming at the above problems, this study firstly builds a stochastic EED model in the form of chance-constrained programming associated with wind power reliability. Next, wind power features are deduced from the statistic characteristics of wind speed, and thus the established model is converted to a deterministic form. After that, an auxiliary decision-making method based on the technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS) is designed to draw the optimal solution based upon the specific requirements of carbon emission control. Numerical Study of Hydrogen Auto-Ignition Process in an Isotropic and Anisotropic Turbulent Field
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anisotropy, Eulerian Stochastic Fields, hydrogen auto-ignition, isotropic turbulence, LES
The physical mechanisms underlying the dynamics of the flame kernel in stationary isotropic and anisotropic turbulent field are studied using large eddy simulations (LES) combined with a pdf approach method for the combustion model closure. Special attention is given to the ignition scenario, ignition delay, size and shape of the flame kernel among different turbulent regimes. Different stages of ignition are analysed for various levels of the initial velocity fluctuations and turbulence length scales. Impact of these parameters is found small for the ignition delay time but turns out to be significant during the flame kernel propagation phase and persists up to the stabilisation stage. In general, it is found that in the isotropic conditions, the flame growth and the rise of the maximum temperature in the domain are more dependent on the initial fluctuations level and the length scales. In the anisotropic regimes, these parameters have a substantial influence on the flame only during... [more]

Calibration and Validation of ArcGIS Solar Radiation Tool for Photovoltaic Potential Determination in the Netherlands
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ArcGIS solar radiation, calibration, Netherlands, photovoltaic solar potential, validation
Geographic information system (GIS) based tools have become popular for solar photovoltaic (PV) potential estimations, especially in urban areas. There are readily available tools for the mapping and estimation of solar irradiation that give results with the click of a button. Although these tools capture the complexities of the urban environment, they often miss the more important atmospheric parameters that determine the irradiation and potential estimations. Therefore, validation of these models is necessary for accurate potential energy yield and capacity estimations. This paper demonstrates the calibration and validation of the solar radiation model developed by Fu and Rich, employed within ArcGIS, with a focus on the input atmospheric parameters, diffusivity and transmissivity for the Netherlands. In addition, factors affecting the model’s performance with respect to the resolution of the input data were studied. Data were calibrated using ground measurements from Royal Netherlan... [more]

An Improved Artificial Jellyfish Search Optimizer for Parameter Identification of Photovoltaic Models
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: artificial jellyfish search optimizer, performance measures, premature convergence strategy, PV modules, solar systems
The optimization of photovoltaic (PV) systems relies on the development of an accurate model of the parameter values for the solar/PV generating units. This work proposes a modified artificial jellyfish search optimizer (MJSO) with a novel premature convergence strategy (PCS) to define effectively the unknown parameters of PV systems. The PCS works on preserving the diversity among the members of the population while accelerating the convergence toward the best solution based on two motions: (i) moving the current solution between two particles selected randomly from the population, and (ii) searching for better solutions between the best-so-far one and a random one from the population. To confirm its efficacy, the proposed method is validated on three different PV technologies and is being compared with some of the latest competitive computational frameworks. The numerical simulations and results confirm the dominance of the proposed algorithm in terms of the accuracy of the final res... [more]

Laplacian Matrix-Based Power Flow Formulation for LVDC Grids with Radial and Meshed Configurations
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: constant power load, direct load flow, distributed generation, distribution system, graph theory, low voltage DC grids, meshed networks, power flow, radial networks
There is an increasing interest in low voltage direct current (LVDC) distribution grids due to advancements in power electronics enabling efficient and economical electrical networks in the DC paradigm. Power flow equations in LVDC grids are non-linear and non-convex due to the presence of constant power nodes. Depending on the implementation, power flow equations may lead to more than one solution and unrealistic solutions; therefore, the uniqueness of the solution should not be taken for granted. This paper proposes a new power flow solver based on a graph theory for LVDC grids having radial or meshed configurations. The solver provides a unique solution. Two test feeders composed of 33 nodes and 69 nodes are considered to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed method is compared with a fixed-point methodology called direct load flow (DLF) having a mathematical formulation equivalent to a backward forward sweep (BFS) class of solvers in the case of radial dis... Novel Single-Phase Short-Stroke Tubular Permanent Magnet Oscillating Machines with Partitioned Stator
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: cogging force, partitioned stator, permanent magnet, single phase, tubular machine
This paper presents three novel configurations of single-phase (SP) short-stroke (SS) tubular permanent magnet oscillating machines (TPMOMs) with partitioned stator (PS), termed PS-SPSS-TPMOMs. The machine structures are described and the influence of permanent magnet pole alignment with either stator slot or stator tooth is investigated. It is found that the PM poles should be aligned with the stator slots in order to ease the oscillation. The electromagnetic performance of these proposed machines is analyzed and compared. The results show that such machines have the advantages of low mover mass and low magnet eddy current loss, compared with a conventional surface-mounted SPSS-TPMOM.

Keywords: energy collectives, energy communities, local energy markets, pricing schemes
In this paper, we investigate the economic benefits of an energy community investing in small-scale photovoltaics (PVs) when local energy trading is operated amongst the community members. The motivation stems from the open research question on whether a community-operated local energy market can enhance the investment feasibility of behind-the-meter small-scale PVs installed by energy community members. Firstly, a review of the models, mechanisms and concepts required for framing the relevant concepts is conducted, while a clarification of nuances at important terms is attempted. Next, a tool for the investigation of the economic benefits of operating a local energy market in the context of an energy community is developed. We design the local energy market using state-of-the-art formulations, modified according to the requirements of the case study. Keywords: energy system integration, flexibility, long-term fluctuations (LTFs), Renewable and Sustainable Energy, short-term fluctuations (STFs), wind power
Wind power has been increasingly deployed in the last decade to decarbonize the electricity sector. Wind power output changes intermittently depending on weather conditions. In electrical power systems with high shares of variable renewable energy sources, such as wind power, system operators aim to respond flexibly to fluctuations in output. Here, we investigated very short-term fluctuations, short-term fluctuations (STFs), and long-term fluctuations (LTFs) in wind power output by analyzing historical output data for two northern and one southern balancing areas in Japan. We found a relationship between STFs and the average LTFs. The percentiles of the STFs in each month are approximated by linear functions of the monthly average LTFs. Furthermore, the absolute value of the slope of this function decreases with wind power capacity in the balancing area. The LTFs reflect the trend in wind power output. The results indicate that the flexibility required for power systems can be estimate... [more]

Keywords: converter interfaced generation, dynamic phasors, low inertia, power electronics, real-time simulation, shifted frequency analysis
New types of power system transients with lower time constants are emerging due to the replacement of synchronous generation with converter interfaced generation and are challenging the modeling approaches conventionally applied in power system simulation. Quasi-stationary simulations are based on classical phasor models, whereas EMT simulations calculate the instantaneous values of models in the time domain. In addition to these conventional modeling approaches, this paper investigates simulation based on dynamic phasor models, as has been proposed by the Shifted Frequency Analysis. The simulation accuracy of the three modeling approaches was analyzed for characteristic transients from the electromagnetic to the electromechanical phenomena range, including converter control as well as low inertia transients. The analysis was carried out for systems with converter interfaced and synchronous generation whilst considering the simulation step size as a crucial influence parameter. The res... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: differential protection, generator protection, longitudinal impedance, phase-to-phase fault, winding structure
In view of the difficulties in coordination between reliability and sensitivity of conventional generator differential protection, this paper presents a novel generator differential protection scheme based on a new braking method. On the basis of the mathematical model of the field-circuit coupling method and the electrical network cascade characteristics, the stator windings were combined and decoupled by the improved six-sequence component method to eliminate electromagnetic coupling between winding coils. In accordance with the basic characteristics of longitudinal impedance, the function of sub-item discrimination was realized. Numerous simulations and the up-to-date dynamic experiments showed that the proposed method has good state discrimination ability and can effectively resist the influence of current transformer saturation. Thus, it has an excellent prospect for engineering promotion.
