Directional Dependency of Relative Permeability in Vugular Porous Medium: Experiment and Numerical Simulation
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: directional dependency, gravity segregation, oil recovery ratio, relative permeability, vugular porous medium
Carbonate reservoirs are a highly heterogeneous type of reservoir characterized by the presence of a large amount of vugs and pores. During two-phase displacement, the two-phase flow regime in the vugs might be gravity segregated. The distribution pattern of two-phase fluid in the vugs would accelerate the water flow in downward and horizontal directions, meanwhile decelerating in an upward direction, resulting in a different oil recovery ratio. This gives rise to the question of whether the relative permeability should be modeled as a directional dependent in a vugular porous medium since it is usually treated as an isotropic quantity. In this study, via both experiment and numerical simulation, we demonstrate that the relative permeability of vugular porous medium is dependent on the angle between the flow direction and the horizontal plane and should be considered for oil recovery estimation for carbonate reservoirs. Using the transmissibility-weighted upscaling method and a single-... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ammonium carbonate, bioenergy, biogas upgrading, circular economy, closed-loop, Modelling, nutrient recovery, organic fertilizer, stabilization, waste valorization
The use of the commercial simulator Aspen Plus® could bring an amelioration in the accuracy of the predictions of the chemical species composition in the output streams of the anaerobic digestion process. Compared to the traditionally employed lumped models, which are elaborated from scratch, the models implemented in Aspen Plus® have access to a broad library of thermodynamic and phenomena transport properties. In the present investigation, a process simulation model for anaerobic digestion has been prepared by including a stoichiometric-equilibria reactor to calculate the extent of the ionization of the molecules present in the anaerobic digestate. The model characterizes the technical feasibility of anaerobic digestate stabilization, by means of biomass ash-based treatment, for the production of an organic fertilizer and potential biogas upgradation with the synthesis of ammonium carbonate. First of all, the titration of the manure digestate with the hydrochloric acid showed that a... [more]

Virtual Vector-Based Direct Power Control of a Three-Phase Coupled Inductor-Based Bipolar-Output Active Rectifier for More Electric Aircraft
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bipolar-output active rectifier, direct power control, neutral-point potential control, virtual vector
Direct power control (DPC) has gained increasing attention in recent years as a simple and efficient control strategy for pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifiers. In this paper, the idea of DPC is introduced into the three-phase coupled inductor-based bipolar-output active rectifier (TCIBAR) for the first time, and a virtual vector-based direct power control (VVB-DPC) strategy is proposed for TCIBAR to realize the bipolar DC power supply for more electric aircraft (MEA). First, the mathematical model of the TCIBAR is deduced, and the basic principle of the classic DPC strategy is reviewed. On this basis, the limitations of the classic DPC strategy in TCIBAR control are analyzed. Second, a set of virtual vectors are derived to establish a novel virtual-vector switching table. Based on the virtual-vector switching table, the hysteresis power control of TCIBAR can be realized without affecting the DC-side neutral-point potential of TCIBAR. Finally, a neutral-point potential control method... [more]

Enhancing User Engagement in Local Energy Initiatives Using Smart Local Energy Engagement Tools: A Meta Study
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: community energy, decentralised energy, local energy, smart energy tool, user engagement
Deploying smart local energy engagement tools (SLEETs) in local energy projects enables users to better observe and control energy, and potentially become active participants in local energy management. Using a cross-project approach, this paper examines the prevalence, effectiveness and inclusiveness of 84 SLEETs deployed in 72 local energy projects in the UK from 2008 to 2018. An original framework for the characterisation of SLEETs was employed, which grouped them into seven types and characterised them in terms of their level of interaction and interface design. Our study shows that information-driven tools were the most popular in community energy groups, while digital energy platforms or interaction tools with numeric interfaces were the most popular in smart local energy system (SLES) initiatives. In contrast, interaction tools with visual interfaces, and tools offering control were found to be less popular. Spatial analysis revealed that SLEETs were mostly deployed in areas wit... [more]

A Novel Solar System of Electricity and Heat
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: figure of merit, heat accumulation, solar energy, TEG, thermoelectric module
Thermoelectric devices may have an essential role in the development of fuel-saving, environmentallyfriendly, and cost-effective energy sources for power generation based on the direct conversion of heat into electrical energy. A wide usage of thermoelectric energy systems already exhibits high reliability and long operation time in the space industry and gas pipe systems. The development and application of solar thermoelectric generators (TEGs) arelimited mainly by relatively low thermoelectric conversion efficiency. Forthe first time, we propose to use the direct energy conversion of solar energy by TEGs based on the high-performance multilayer thermoelectric modules with electric efficiency of ~15%. Solar energy was absorbed and converted to thermal energy, which is accumulated by a phase-change material (aluminum alloys at solidification temperature ~900 K). The heat flow from the accumulator through the thermoelectric convertor (generator) allows electrical power to be obtained an... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: AENS, ASAI, distributed generation (DG), ENS, particle swarm optimization (PSO), reconfiguration, reliability, SAIDI, SAIFI, v&f (voltage and frequency) index
The development and use of PV (Photovoltaic), Wind, and Hydro-based Distributed Generation (DG) is presently on the rise worldwide for improving stability and reliability, and reducing the power loss in the distribution system with reduced emission of harmful gases. A crucial issue addressed in this article, due to the increased penetration of DGs, is islanding operations. The detection of islanding is performed by a proposed v&f (voltage and frequency) index method. The reliability indices of the IEEE-33 and 118 radial bus distribution system after the detection of islanding by the proposed method is evaluated by considering the islanding issue as customer interruption. To mitigate the islanding, a reconfiguration strategy using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is also performed and the proposed strategy is also evaluated with the conventional reconfiguration strategy of the distribution system.

Quantitative Evaluation of the Effects of Heat Island on Building Energy Simulation: A Case Study in Wuhan, China
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building energy simulation, heat island effect, high-rise building, microclimate simulation
The climate data used for dynamic energy simulation of buildings located in urban regions are usually collected in meteorological stations situated in rural areas, which do not accurately represent the urban microclimate (e.g., urban heat island effect), and this might affect the simulation accuracy. This paper aims at quantitatively evaluating the effects of heat island on a high-rise building’s energy performance based on the microclimate simulation tool ENVI-met and the building energy simulation tool COMFIE. However, the computation of microclimate models is time consuming; it is not possible to simulate every day of a year in a reasonable time. This paper proposes a method that generates hourly “site-specific climate data” to avoid long microclimate simulation times. A coupling method of ENVI-met and COMFIE was developed for more precise building energy simulation, accounting for the heat island effect. It was applied to a high-rise building in Wuhan, China. Keywords: corporate social responsibility, hybrid channel, price competition, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sustainable supply chain model
Global energy demand has unquestionably increased significantly in recent years. Nowadays, industries are very aware of global warming, and to save the environment, they produce green products with energy consumption. Day by day, energy use is increasing due to population, end-use markets of construction, transportation, industry, etc. But the energy limit is finite, whereas the daily use is rising, so the price is increasing. In this study, two situations have been shown in two models with renewable energy consumption. Model 1 analyzes the manufacturer and retailer’s optimal green quality and sales price in two-echelon supply chain systems with centralized and decentralized cases. In this case, the retailer sells their products through three different channels: online, offline, and buy-online-pickup-in store, with three different selling prices. In Model 2, Manufacturer 1 and Manufacturer 2 produce green and regular products with renewable energy consumption. In this case, both manufa... [more]

Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: balanced iterative reducing and clustering using hierarchies (BIRCH), clustering algorithms, load-disaggregation, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM), smart grid, smart metering
A non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) process is intended to allow for the separation of individual appliances from an aggregated energy reading in order to estimate the operation of individual loads. In the past, electricity meters specified only active power readings, for billing purposes, thus limiting NILM capabilities. Recent progress in smart metering technology has introduced cost-effective, household-consumer-grade metering products, which can produce multiple features with high accuracy. In this paper, a new method is proposed for applying a BIRCH (balanced iterative reducing and clustering using hierarchies) algorithm as part of a multi-dimensional load disaggregation solution based on the extraction of multiple features from a smart meter. The method uses low-frequency meter reading and constructs a multi-dimensional feature space with adaption to smart meter parameters and is useful for type I as well as type II loads with the addition of timers. Subject: Other
Keywords: current error, current transformer, distorted current, harmonics, phase displacement, secondary current excitation, transformation accuracy
This paper presents a newly developed method to determine the values of current error and phase displacement for the transformation of distorted current harmonics by the inductive current transformers. This approach eliminates the necessity for the utilization of an expensive, high-current supply system for the measuring setup. In this method, the secondary winding is fed by the distorted voltage with RMS values of harmonics calculated in order to reproduce the operation point of the inductive current transformer on the magnetization characteristic of its magnetic core, as in primary winding excitation conditions. This proposed approach is successfully verified with the typically used primary current excitation method, where the secondary currents of the reference and tested current transformers are compared in the differential measuring setup. It was confirmed that the inductive CT with current error and phase displacement for transformation of distorted current harmonics determined i... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: anomaly detection, backpropagation neural network, electricity inspection, improved arithmetic optimization algorithm
Anomaly detection can improve the service level of the grid, effectively save human resources and reduce the operating cost of a power company. In this study, an improved arithmetic optimization-backpropagation (IAOA-BP) neural algorithm for an anomaly detection model was proposed for electricity inspection. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, performance analysis, Savonius rotor, wind tree
Large wind turbines of the horizontal axis are commonly used to gather wind energy; however, their performance is found to be constrained in conditions of erratic and low-speed wind flow. In contrast, low wind conditions—which are typically present in dense urban areas—are found to favour vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT). These turbines have a simple design, are inexpensive and quiet, and are discovered to be better in low wind situations. In this research, we have chosen wind tree applications to absorb the most available wind energy. The new Aeroleaf Savonius Wind Turbine was developed numerically and a computational fluid dynamics simulation was performed on this new type of Savonius tree to predict its performance. The results indicated that the system could accept wind from any direction and could start rotating as soon as the site had a cut in wind speed of 3.3 m/s.
