April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: damping control, eigenvalue analysis, permanent magnet synchronous generator, subsynchronous resonance, wind farm
This paper provides an H∞ robust control strategy for a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind farm to realize subsynchronous resonance suppression (SSR) subject to uncertain system distortions and parameter perturbation. Firstly, an eighth-order state space mathematical model of a PMSG-based wind farm is established, including the grid-side converter (GSC), GSC controller, and phase-locked loop (PLL) model. Secondly, the SSR characteristics of a PMSG-based wind farm are analyzed through eigenvalue analysis. Thirdly, a robust subsynchronous damping controller is designed based on eigenvalue analysis of SSR. Finally, the designed robust subsynchronous damping controller is validated with case studies of wind farms. The results show that the controller can increase the stability of PMSG-based wind farm systems and restrain SSR.

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: model-free predictive control, MPPT, NPC, PV, transformerless inverter
Utility grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) installations are becoming a typical component of the current electrical energy grid. The adoption of transformerless inverters has recently changed the topology of these systems. Despite being small, inexpensive, and effective, transformerless inverters have a recurring leakage current issue. Numerous studies are being conducted to improve its performance and bring the leakage current down to acceptable levels. The studies propose three tracks for addressing the leakage current problem of transformerless PV systems: the control technique, the inverter modulation, and the inverter topology. This study applies the model-free predictive control (MFPC) technique to a grid-connected NPC 3-φ transformerless converter powered by a PV panel. An LCL filter connects the transformerless inverter to the grid. The system model considers the grid filter components and the internal impedance of the utility grid. The proposed system’s discrete model is established... [more]

Dual-Extended State Observer-Based Feedback Linearizing Control for a Nonlinear System with Mismatched Disturbances and Uncertainties
Ravi Gandhi, Dipak Adhyaru, Gulshan Sharma, Pitshou N. Bokoro
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: extended state observer, feedback linearizing control, lumped disturbances, mismatched disturbance, nonlinear system, stability analysis
This research article presents the nonlinear control framework to estimate and reject the mismatched lumped disturbances acting on the nonlinear uncertain system. It is an unfortunate fact that the conventional extended state observer (ESO) is not capable of simultaneously estimating the mismatched lumped disturbance and its derivative for the systems. Moreover, the basic ESO is only suitable for systems with integral chain form (ICF) structures. Similarly, the conventional feedback linearizing control (FLC) approach is not robust enough to stabilize systems in the presence of disturbances and uncertainties. Hence, the nonlinear control framework is proposed to overcome the above issues, which are composed of (a) a dual-extended state observer (DESO), and (b) a DESO-based FLC. The DESO provides information on the unmeasured state, mismatched disturbance, and its derivatives. The DESO-FLC utilizes the information from the DESO to counter the effects of such disturbances and to stabilize... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: application program interface, battery control, battery monitoring, battery storage, cloud computing, cloud platforms, energy community, energy storage system, IoT, SunSpec
Today, increasing numbers of batteries are installed in residential and commercial buildings; by coordinating their operation, it is possible to favor both the exploitation of renewable sources and the safe operation of electricity grids. However, how can this multitude of battery storage systems be coordinated? Using the Application Programming Interfaces of the storage systems’ manufacturers is a feasible solution, but it has a huge limitation: communication to and from storage systems must necessarily pass through the manufacturers’ cloud infrastructure. Therefore, this article presents an IoT-based solution which allows monitoring/controlling battery storage systems, independently from the manufacturers’ cloud infrastructure. More specifically, a home gateway locally controls the battery storage using local APIs via Wi-Fi on the condition that the manufacturer enables them. If not, an auxiliary device allows the home gateway to establish a wired communication with the battery stora... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: characterization, comminution, energy consumption, ferrochrome slag, HPGR, Modelling, product size
The present research aims to analyze the comminution behavior of ferrochrome slag using high-pressure grinding rolls. The laboratory bench scale high-pressure grinding rolls were used to study the three significant variables on the grinding efficiency of ferrochrome slag. The Central Composite Design was used to study the process variables, such as roll gap, applied load, and roller speed. The grinding efficiency was evaluated based on the product size and the energy consumption. The results showed that the increased gap between the rolls and roller speed decreases the product size with increased energy consumption. The results also found that an increase in applied load decreases the product fineness with increased energy consumption. The models were developed for the responses of P80 (size of 80% mass finer) and Ecs (specific energy consumption). Both the responses show high regression coefficients, thus ensuring adequate models with the experimental data. The minimum values of the P... [more]

Haoke Wu, Lorenzo Solida, Tao Huang, Ettore Bompard
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Europe and North Africa, hybrid HVAC-HVDC, renewable energy systems
Renewable energy sources (RESs) and electricity demand are not evenly distributed geographically across Europe. Thus, harvesting the wind energy from the north and solar energy from the south and delivering them to the demand in central Europe is a more viable solution. However, the present High-voltage alternating current (HVAC) transmission grids have been sometimes congested; thus, High-voltage direct current (HVDC) provides another possibility along the existing HVAC infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a hybrid HVAC-HVDC grid, allowing a large penetration of concentrated RES in Europe and North Africa. More specifically, the HVDC network is constructed to transfer wind and hydro electricity from northwestern Europe and solar electricity from north Africa, while the HVAC network is used to distribute electricity within each country or among adjacent areas. To quantitatively evaluate the feasibility and relevant performances, multiple dimensions of indicators are designed. Empl... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bearing, force, hybrid, magnet, magnetic bearing, PM, separated stator, stiffness, weight reduction
Recently, high-speed motors are receiving a lot of attention in the industrial field. When driving a motor at high speed, the advantages include high power density, high efficiency, and miniaturization. However, the disadvantages of the high-speed operation of motors are mechanical and structural safety. This is because the bearings used in high-speed motors require characteristics such as precision and low friction. There are two prominent types of bearings mainly used in high-speed motors: rolling bearings and magnetic bearings. A feature of rolling bearings is that they reduce frictional resistance by contacting points or lines between the shaft and the bearing. However, the disadvantages of rolling bearings are high mechanical friction losses due to the need for contact with the lubrication system. Maintenance costs are high. For this reason, a lot of research on bearings is being conducted to reduce the frictional loss of bearings and increase their efficiency and reliability. Bea... [more]

Keywords: 3D model, fish-eye camera, ray casting, solar access, viewshed
In this study, we developed a 3D-model-based technology that can evaluate solar access by analyzing solar radiation and shade to find the optimal location for a solar system. We developed an algorithm that can quickly calculate viewshed by applying ray-casting technology, which is useful in the field of computer graphics. To apply the developed technology, an unmanned aerial vehicle (DJI MAVIC 3) was used to create a 3D model by taking 320 photos of the Kangwon National University Samcheok campus. To verify the developed technology, a comparison with image-based analysis using a 360-degree camera was performed for 30 points. As a result of applying the developed technology to the study area, it was possible to calculate the solar access for each point. In general, image-based analysis exaggerates the effects of objects such as trees, whereas the developed technique can produce realistic results if the 3D objects were well built. If the technology is further developed in the future, it... [more]

The development of heavy oil reservoirs in China is of great significance to safeguard national energy security, but great challenges are faced due to the complex and heterogeneous reservoir properties. Inter-well connectivity analysis is critical to enhancing the development performance, as it is a good way to interpret fluid flow and provides a theoretical basis for injection-production optimization. Data-driven deep learning methods have been widely used in reservoir development and can be employed to develop surrogate models of injection and production and to infer inter-well connectivity. In this study, the model performance of a recurrent neural network (RNN) and its four variants were evaluated and compared in a temporal production prediction. The comparison results showed that bidirectional gated recurrent unit (Bi-GRU) is the optimal algorithm with the highest accuracy of 0.94. A surrogate model was established to simulate the inter-well connectivity of steam-assisted gravity... [more]

Keywords: agricultural robots, lithium iron phosphate, RC model, sealed lead acid, state of charge estimation, Thevenin model
The battery State of Charge (SoC) is critical information to overcome agricultural robots’ limitations related to battery and energy management. Although several SoC estimation methods have been proposed in the literature, the performance of these methods has not been validated for different battery chemistries in agricultural mobile robot applications. Compared to previous work, this paper evaluates the limits of the SoC estimation using the RC model and the Thevenin model for a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery and a Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) battery. This evaluation used a custom agricultural robot in a controlled indoor environment. Consequently, this work assessed the limitations of two ECM-based SoC estimation methods using battery packs, low-cost sensors and discharge cycles typically used in agricultural robot applications. Finally, the results indicate that the RC model is not suitable for SoC estimation for LFP battery; however, it achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.2%... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: distributed energy resources, inverter-based distributed generation, overcurrent protection coordination, short-circuit current contribution
This paper proposes a practical approach to estimate the symmetrical short-circuit current (SCC) levels in overcurrent protection devices (OCPDs) installed on radial feeders for any penetration level of inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs). The proposed method restores the lost phase protection coordination by estimating SCC values and changing the TMS of OCPDs accordingly. The method is validated by comparing the results with simulations on the IEEE 34-Node Test Feeder using MATLAB/Simulink, which shows an average error of 1.5% and a maximum error of 3.0%. For a 100% penetration level, the SCC variation through OCPDs installed on the main fault trunk (MFT) exceeds ± 10%, leading to compromised phase protection coordination. The SCC flowing reversely through OCPDs on lateral branches and the fault on the MFT could cause improper tripping. Higher SCC levels are estimated and measured for fault impedances equal to zero. The phase protection is restored by changing the TMS o... [more]

In this research, a design guideline for a kinetic energy converter using a cantilever triple-layer piezoelectric harvester (CTLPH) for low-frequency applications is presented. By combining the constitutive and internal energy equations, the analytical equations for harvested voltage and power were developed. It was also found that frequency of motion, applied tip force, piezoelectric coefficients, geometrical dimensions, and mechanical properties of layers play significant roles in the performance of the harvester. Having characterised the voltage regulator module, LTC3588, the dependency of output voltage on both the storage and output capacitors of the LTC3588 was investigated. An experimental measurement using the optical method was carried out to determine the applied tip force. Furthermore, the performance of the CTLPH in low frequencies (<3.3 Hz) for various resistive loads was investigated. It was found that both excitation frequency and external resistance load are effectiv... [more]

Keywords: commercialization, electrochemical analysis, electrochemical hydrogen compressors, hydrogen energy, Simulation
A global energy shift to a carbon-neutral society requires clean energy. Hydrogen can accelerate the process of expanding clean and renewable energy sources. However, conventional hydrogen compression and storage technology still suffers from inefficiencies, high costs, and safety concerns. An electrochemical hydrogen compressor (EHC) is a device similar in structure to a water electrolyzer. Its most significant advantage is that it can accomplish hydrogen separation and compression at the same time. With no mechanical motion and low energy consumption, the EHC is the key to future hydrogen compression and purification technology breakthroughs. In this study, the compression performance, efficiency, and other related parameters of EHC are investigated through experiments and simulation calculations. The experimental results show that under the same experimental conditions, increasing the supply voltage and the pressure in the anode chamber can improve the reaction rate of EHC and balan... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: domain of attraction, FRT, low-voltage ride through, phase portrait, phase-locked loop, reactive current injection, transient stability
The precise control of output power by grid-connected converters relies on the correct identification and tracking of a grid voltage’s phase at the converter terminal. During severe grid faults, large disturbances cause the converter’s operating point to move away from the stable equilibrium point during normal operation. This leads to oscillations of both the active and reactive power fed into the grid. Using large-signal modelling, this study investigated the converter’s dynamic processes during and after such fault situations. The investigation considered the influence of the converter’s phase-locked loop (PLL), responsible for phase tracking, as well as that of the DC link on the converter-grid system, which has a major influence on the active power exchange with the grid. On this basis, this study also focused on the reactive current reference’s influence during and after fault clearing. Furthermore, an easily implementable strategy for reactive current injection, leading to minim... [more]

Keywords: Compressed Air Energy Storage, Energy Storage, ocean storage, offshore wind, renewable energies, seasonal energy storage
There is a significant energy transition in progress globally. This is mainly driven by the insertion of variable sources of energy, such as wind and solar power. To guarantee that the supply of energy meets its demand, energy storage technologies will play an important role in integrating these intermittent energy sources. Daily energy storage can be provided by batteries. However, there is still no technology that can provide weekly, monthly and seasonal energy storage services where pumped hydro storage is not a viable solution. Herein, we introduce an innovative energy storage proposal based on isothermal air compression/decompression and storage of the compressed air in the deep sea. Isothermal deep ocean compressed air energy storage (IDO-CAES) is estimated to cost from 1500 to 3000 USD/kW for installed capacity and 1 to 10 USD/kWh for energy storage. IDO-CAES should complement batteries, providing weekly, monthly and seasonal energy storage cycles in future sustainable energy gr... [more]
