Analytical Modeling of Magnetic Field Distribution at No Load for Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Machines
Antonino Di Gerlando, Claudio Ricca
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: cogging torque, electromagnetic forces, magnetic fields, magnetic flux density, Maxwell tensor, permanent magnet machines
This paper presents an analytical study of the air-gap magnetic field of a Surface Permanent Magnet (SPM) linear machine under no load. By means of the method of images, the complex expression of the magnetic field of a conductor, inside the air gap between two smooth iron surfaces, is retrieved. Then, integrating the conductor expression, the formulation of the magnetic field of a current sheet and thus the one of a SPM, using two vertical current sheets, is obtained. At last, the no-load magnetic field expression, for a generic time instant, of a slotless machine is retrieved. The novelty of the proposed approach is the availability, due to a different calculation approach, of a unique closed-form formulation for the slotless machine air-gap field, a quantity that, in literature, is usually present in Fourier series formulation. Additionally, as a means to calculate integral quantities and show the goodness of the method a complex slotting function is introduced to account for the sl... [more]
Study of an nZEB Office Building with Storage in Electric Vehicle Batteries and Dispatch of a Natural Gas-Fuelled Generator
George Stamatellos, Tassos Stamatelos
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery storage, electric vehicles, generator, micro-grids, natural gas engine, photovoltaics
The rapid electrification of vehicles has led to a great increase in numbers of charging stations and a growing appetite for charging power, with stochastic charging behaviours heavily loading the electricity grid. The upcoming difficulties and increasing costs associated with electricity production will require a rapid development of smart grids and city networks. Smart micro-grids established in nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB) are a promising strategy to support grid stability and resilience at a reduced cost. A significant amount of electricity storage capacity is necessary for optimal dispatch of the self-produced photovoltaic electricity. For office buildings, this capacity can be provided by the aggregate battery storage of the employees’ electric vehicles, which connect to the smart grid during working hours for charging and, if allowed, for discharging. An additional, fully controllable electricity source that is necessary to support an optimal micro-grid is the internal co... [more]

Manuel Díaz, Javier Muñoz, Marco Rivera, Jaime Rohten
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: microinverter, MPPT algorithm, push–pull converter, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The effects of partial shading or dust accumulation on the panels of photovoltaic systems connected to the grid can generate a considerable reduction in energy performance, being necessary to provide the appropriate voltage to the grid regardless of the irradiance level. This paper addresses this problem and presents a comprehensive control strategy and its implementation for a grid-connected microinverter composed of a push−pull converter followed by an H-bridge inverter. In the push−pull converter, a hybrid MPPT algorithm and a PI control enable work in the MPP of the PV panel. In the H-bridge inverter, a cascade control consisting of a PI control and a predictive control allows the connection to the grid. A proof-of-concept prototype is implemented in order to validate the proposal. Experimental tests were performed by connecting the microinverter to a PV panel and a programmable photovoltaic panel emulator to check the MPPT performance. Furthermore, partial shading conditions were... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boost converter, DC-DC power converter, high step-up power converter
This paper introduces a dual-switchhigh step-up DC-DC power converter. The proposed converter features a high step-up voltage gain, relatively low cumulative stored energy over its inductors, low voltage stress on the active switches, and high efficiency, even at a relatively high duty ratio. An assessment of the proposed converter against conventional boost and a high step-up power converter is presented in terms of steady-state time, voltage gain, stored energy over its inductors, and efficiency. The assessment shows a reduction of 81.25% and 62.5% of stored energy in inductors to comply with the same operational conditions. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the benefits of the proposed dual-switch high step-up power converter.

Yi Guo, Qi Wang, Maofei Geng, Xueyuan Peng, Jianmei Feng
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD simulation, density influence, gas-liquid interaction, hydrogen energy, ionic liquid compressor
As a new and promising compression technology for hydrogen gas, the ionic liquid compressor inherits the advantages of the ionic liquid and the hydraulic system. The liquid density is one of the key parameters influencing the fluid flow field, the sloshing of the bulk liquid, and the movement of droplets generated during the compressor operation. An appropriate selection of the liquid density is important for the compressor design, which would improve the thermodynamic performance of the compressor. However, the density of the ionic liquid varied significantly depending on the specific combination of the cation and anions. This paper proposed the methodology to select the optimal liquid density used in the ionic liquid compressor for hydrogen storage. The gas-liquid interaction in the compression chamber is analysed through numerical simulations under varied liquid density values. Results found that the increase in the liquid density promoted the detachment of the ionic liquid from the... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, emissions, low-temperature combustion, premixing ratio, reactivity-controlled compression ignition engine
Environmental concerns over automotive exhaust emissions and consumer demand for higher fuel efficiency have led to the development of low-temperature combustion concepts. The reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI) engine is one among them and has the potential to reduce NOx and smoke emissions simultaneously. In this concept, a low-reactivity fuel is injected into the intake port and another high-reactivity fuel is injected into the cylinder directly. This results in reactivity stratification and provides more control over the rate of heat release. However, operating parameters such as reactivity of fuels, premixing ratio, injection strategies, exhaust gas recirculation ratio, piston bowl geometry, and compression ratio influence emissions formation. The article reviews recent developments on the effect of the above operating parameters on the performance and emission characteristics of RCCI engines operated with alternative fuels. The combustion strategies used to extend t... [more]

Ebrahim Fathi, Danilo Arcentales, Fatemeh Belyadi
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Citronelle, CO2 sequestration, pressure and saturation dynamics, reduced order model
Major concerns of carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in subsurface formations are knowledge of the well injectivity and gas storage capacity of the formation, the CO2 pressure and saturation plume extensions during and after injection, and the risks associated with CO2 leakage and fault reactivation. Saline reservoirs are considered as one of the target formations for CO2 sequestration through structural, residual, dissolution, and mineral trapping mechanisms. The boundary condition of the saline reservoir dictates the pressure and saturation plume extension of the injected supercritical CO2 that could expand over large distances. This can lead to sources of risk, e.g., leakage and/or fault reactivation due to presence of wells, thief zones, and geological discontinuities. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop a model that describes how risk-related performance metrics (i.e., the CO2 saturation plume size, the pressure differential plume area, and the pressure differential at... April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dual-motor electric drive system, dynamic characteristics, electromechanical coupling, hybrid electric vehicle, impact energy
The electric mode is the main operational mode of dual-motor hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), so the reliability of the dual-motor electric drive system (DEDS) is particularly important. To research the electromechanical coupling mechanism of the DEDS of HEVs, firstly, considering the time-varying mesh stiffness of gears and the nonlinear characteristics of inverters, an electromechanical coupling dynamics model of the DEDS was established, including the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and the gear transmission system. Then, the electromechanical coupled dynamic characteristics of the DEDS in the single-motor and dual-motor drive modes were analyzed under steady-state and impact load conditions, respectively. The results show that the motor stator current frequency is modulated by the complicated gear meshing frequency, and the operation state of the gear transmission system can thus be monitored in the stator current. Impact load causes the instantaneous torsional vibration... [more]

Failure Detection Techniques on the Demand Side of Smart and Sustainable Compressed Air Systems: A Systematic Review
Massimo Borg, Paul Refalo, Emmanuel Francalanza
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressed air, Energy Efficiency, Fault Detection, smart and sustainable systems
The industrial sector is a crucial economic pillar, seeing annual increases in the production output. In the last few years, a greater emphasis has been placed on the efficient and sustainable use of resources within industry. The use of compressed air in this field is hence gaining interest. These systems have numerous benefits, such as relative low investment costs and reliability; however, they suffer from low-energy efficiency and are highly susceptible to faults. Conventional detection systems, such as ultrasonic leak detection, can be used to identify faults. However, these methods are time consuming, meaning that leakages are often left unattended, contributing to additional energy wastage. Studies published in this area often focus on the supply side rather than the demand side of pneumatic systems. This paper offers a novel review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology of fault detection methods on the demand side o... [more]

Keywords: energy behavior, energy sector, households, Poland, prosumer, responsible consumption
This paper explores ways to save energy in households with energy prosumers who generate energy using photovoltaic panels and heat pumps. On the basis of a literature analysis, we formulated a research gap in the case of the energy behaviors of prosumers. This research is important due to the growing demand for energy and the transitions of countries toward renewable energy sources. The role of prosumers in the economy is growing as they ensure energy independence and cost savings. The main purpose of this research is to understand the energy behaviors of prosumers and to examine the differences in energy behaviors between users of photovoltaic systems and heat pumps. A sample of 326 Polish prosumer households was selected using the CAWI method in order to obtain empirical data. The results suggest that prosumers show advanced ecological behaviors, and more than half of the respondents implement pro-ecological behaviors in their homes. Being a prosumer is associated with energy indepen... [more]

Keywords: critical heat flux, flow boiling, lookup table, Machine Learning, multiphase flows
Critical heat flux (CHF) is an essential parameter that plays a significant role in ensuring the safety and economic efficiency of nuclear power facilities. It imposes design and operational restrictions on nuclear power plants due to safety concerns. Therefore, accurate prediction of CHF using a hybrid framework can assist researchers in optimizing system performance, mitigating risk of equipment failure, and enhancing safety measures. Despite the existence of numerous prediction methods, there remains a lack of agreement regarding the underlying mechanism that gives rise to CHF. Hence, developing a precise and reliable CHF model is a crucial and challenging task. In this study, we proposed a hybrid model based on an artificial neural network (ANN) to improve the prediction accuracy of CHF. Our model leverages the available knowledge from a lookup table (LUT) and then employs ANN to further reduce the gap between actual and predicted outcomes. To develop and assess the accuracy of our... [more]

Keywords: electricity spot prices, ensemble learning methods, Latin America, seasonal decomposition, time series forecasting
The energy price influences the interest in investment, which leads to economic development. An estimate of the future energy price can support the planning of industrial expansions and provide information to avoid times of recession. This paper evaluates adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), bootstrap aggregation (bagging), gradient boosting, histogram-based gradient boosting, and random forest ensemble learning models for forecasting energy prices in Latin America, especially in a case study about Mexico. Seasonal decomposition of the time series is used to reduce unrepresentative variations. The Optuna using tree-structured Parzen estimator, optimizes the structure of the ensembles through a voter by combining several ensemble frameworks; thus an optimized hybrid ensemble learning method is proposed. The results show that the proposed method has a higher performance than the state-of-the-art ensemble learning methods, with a mean squared error of 3.37 × 10−9 in the testing phase.

Keywords: heat flux, magnetic field, Newtonian heating, Sisko fluid, spectral relaxation method
The present study investigates the steady three-dimensional flow of a Sisko fluid over a bidirectional stretching sheet under the influence of Lorentz force. Heat transfer effects have been carried out for constant heat flux and Newtonian heating systems. The transformed governing equations of the flow model are solved by using the spectral relaxation method (SRM), taking into account similarity transformations. The effects of controlling parameters on flow and derived quantities have been presented in the form of graphs and tables. Numerical benchmarks are used to characterise the effects of skin friction and heat transfer rates. It is noticed that in the case of Newtonian heating, the rate of heat transfer is higher than that in the constant heat flux case. As the stretching parameter increases, the fluid temperature decreases in both Newtonian heating and constant heat flux. It was discovered that successive over (under) relaxation (SOR) approaches will considerably boost the conver... [more]

Keywords: ARIMA model, copula function, Genetic Algorithm, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, scenario generation
Determining the operation scenarios of renewable energies is important for power system dispatching. This paper proposes a renewable scenario generation method based on the hybrid genetic algorithm with variable chromosome length (HGAVCL). The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is used to divide the original data into linear and fluctuant parts according to the length of time scales. The HGAVCL is designed to optimally divide the linear part into different time sections. Additionally, each time section is described by the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. With the consideration of temporal correlation, the Copula joint probability density function is established to model the fluctuant part. Based on the attained ARIMA model and joint probability density function, a number of data are generated by the Monte Carlo method, and the time autocorrelation, average offset rate, and climbing similarity indexes are established to assess the data quality of generated scenarios... Keywords: desalination, energy storage systems, energy sustainability, renewable energy resources
Recently, water desalination (WD) has been required for the supply of drinking water in a number of countries. Various technologies of WD utilize considerable thermal and/or electrical energies for removing undesirable salts. Desalination systems now rely on renewable energy resources (RERs) such as geothermal, solar, tidal, wind power, etc. The intermittent nature and changeable intensity constrain the wide applications of renewable energy, so the combination of energy storage systems (ESSs) with WD in many locations has been introduced. Thermal energy storage (TES) needs a convenient medium for storing and hence reuses energy. The present work provides a good background on the methods and technologies of WD. Furthermore, the concepts of both thermal and electrical energy storage are presented. In addition, a detailed review of employing ESSs in various WD processes driven by RERs is presented. The integration of energy storage with water desalination systems (WDSs) based on renewable... [more]

Solar photovoltaics (PV) has emerged as one of the world’s most promising power-generation technologies, and it is essential to assess its applications from the perspective of a material-energy-water (MEW) nexus. We performed a life cycle assessment of the cradle-to-grave MEW for single-crystalline silicon (s-Si) and CdTe PV technologies by assuming both PV systems are recycled at end of life. We found that the MEW network was dominated by energy flows (>95%), while only minor impacts of materials and water flows were observed. Also, these MEW flows have pyramid-like distributions between the three tiers (i.e., primary, secondary/sub-secondary, and tertiary levels), with greater flows at the primary and lower flows at the tertiary levels. A more detailed analysis of materials’ circularity showed that glass layers are the most impactful component of recycling due to their considerable weight in both technologies. Our analysis also emphasized the positive impacts that increased power-con... [more]
