The (partial or total) substitution of petro-diesel with biodiesel in internal combustion engines (ICEs) could represent a crucial path towards the decarbonization of the energy sector. However, critical aspects are related to the controversial issue of the possible increase in Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions. In such a framework, the proposed study aims at investigating the effects of biodiesel share and injection timing on the performance and NOx emissions of a diesel micro combined heat and power (CHP) system. An experimental campaign has been conducted considering the following operating conditions: (i) a reference standard injection timing (17.2° BTDC), an early injection timing (20.8° BTDC), and a late injection timing (12.2° BTDC); (ii) low (0.90 kW), partial (2.45 kW), and full (3.90 kW) output power load; and (iii) four fuel blends with different biodiesel (B) shares (B0, B15, B30, and B100). Experimental data were also elaborated on thanks to the response surface modelling (R... [more]

Pragmatic Validation of Numerical Models Used for the Assessment of Radioactive Waste Repositories: A Perspective
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: pragmatic model validation, radioactive waste isolation, safety assessment, Simulation
The safety case for a radioactive waste repository relies heavily on results obtained by numerical models that assess the long-term performance of the engineered and natural barrier systems. Given that important engineering and public policy decisions are based on these models, it is essential that we critically evaluate their abilities and limitations, and thus justify the level of confidence we have in the inferences drawn from the modeling. In this article, we discuss some of the issues surrounding the modeler’s attempts to test, corroborate, confirm, and verify numerical models—a process sometimes referred to as model validation. This wide-ranging topic is approached by first examining its deep roots in the philosophy of science and hypothesis testing. However, the application of these principles to radioactive waste isolation calls for a more pragmatic approach, which has the narrower goal of corroborating site-specific models and their usefulness for a specific purpose. We focus... [more]

Hydrogen Blending in Gas Pipeline Networks—A Review
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: energy transportation, gas pipelines, hydrogen blending, methane-hydrogen mixture
Replacing fossil fuels with non-carbon fuels is an important step towards reaching the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality. Instead of moving directly from the current natural gas energy systems to pure hydrogen, an incremental blending of hydrogen with natural gas could provide a seamless transition and minimize disruptions in power and heating source distribution to the public. Academic institutions, industry, and governments globally, are supporting research, development and deployment of hydrogen blending projects such as HyDeploy, GRHYD, THyGA, HyBlend, and others which are all seeking to develop efficient pathways to meet the carbon reduction goal in coming decades. There is an understanding that successful commercialization of hydrogen blending requires both scientific advances and favorable techno-economic analysis. Ongoing studies are focused on understanding how the properties of methane-hydrogen mixtures such as density, viscosity, phase interactions, and energy densities imp... [more]

Uniform and Non-Uniform Pumping Effect on Ce:Nd:YAG Side-Pumped Solar Laser Output Performance
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: aspherical lens, Ce:Nd:YAG, light guide, side-pumped, solar laser, uniformity
The Ce:Nd:YAG is a recent active medium in solar-pumped lasers with great potential. This study focuses on the influence of two secondary concentrators: a fused silica aspherical lens and a rectangular fused silica light guide; and consequent pump light distribution on the output performance of a Ce:Nd:YAG side-pumped solar laser. The solar laser head with the aspherical lens concentrated the incident pump light on the central region of the rod, producing the highest continuous-wave 1064 nm solar laser power of 19.6 W from the Ce:Nd:YAG medium. However, the non-uniformity of the absorbed pump profile produced by the aspherical lens led to the rod fracture because of the high thermal load, limiting the maximum laser power. Nevertheless, the solar laser head with the light guide uniformly spread the pump light along the laser rod, minimizing the thermal load issues and producing a maximum laser power of 17.4 W. Despite the slight decrease in laser power, the use of the light guide avoide... [more]

Influence of Pilot Injection on Combustion Characteristic of Methanol−Diesel Dual-Fuel Engine
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion characteristic, methanol–diesel DF, pilot injection period, pilot injection timing, SOC1, SOC2, two-stage combustion process
An experimental study regarding methanol−diesel dual-fuel (DF) engines was conducted on a modified engine to explore the effects of pilot injection timing and period on the two-stage combustion process caused by the pilot injection strategy. In this study, the two-stage combustion process was determined according to the first two peaks of the second derivative of an in-cylinder pressure (d2p/dφ2) curve. The results show that the peak pressure rise rate (PRR) tended to decrease with advancing pilot injection timing at a high co-combustion ratio (CCR), which reduced combustion noise. The start of the combustion of the main injection diesel (SOC2) could be advanced by increasing the pilot injection period or advancing pilot injection timing at a 42% CCR. At an 18% CCR, the pilot injection timing and period had no significant effect on SOC2. With the advancement of pilot injection timing, the start of the combustion of pilot injection diesel (SOC1) advanced, and generally, the coefficient... [more]

A Comprehensive Performance Evaluation Method Targeting Efficiency and Noise for Muzzle Brakes Based on Numerical Simulation
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computational aeroacoustics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, impulse noise, muzzle brake efficiency, numerical simulation
The installation of muzzle brake changes the flow direction of propellant gas, which leads to a decline in the recoil force but an increase in the muzzle flow noise of the side rear. Therefore, the coordination between high efficiency and low harm of muzzle brake is one of the factors limiting its optimization. To address this problem, a numerical method for evaluating the comprehensive performance of muzzle brake targeting muzzle brake efficiency and impulse noise is proposed in the present study. The two performance indexes are calculated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-computational aeroacoustics (CAA) coupled method. Afterwards, a corresponding experiment is conducted to verify its feasibility. Furthermore, the comprehensive performance of muzzle brakes with three different structures are analysed based on the two indexes obtained by the proposed numerical method. The results reveal that both indexes can be influenced by the structure of muzzle brakes. The increased brak... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: bidding strategy, decentralized energy system, grid singularity exchange, local energy market, multi agent system, peer-to-peer
In recent years, local energy markets (LEMs) have been introduced to empower end-customers within energy communities at the distribution level of the power system, in order to be able to trade their energy locally in a competitive and fair environment. However, there is still some challenge with regard to the most efficient approach in organising the LEMs for the electricity exchange between consumers and prosumers while ensuring that they are responsible for their electricity-related choices, and concerning which LEM model is suitable for which prosumer or consumer type. This paper presents a hierarchical model for the organisation of agent-based local energy markets. According to the proposed model, prosumers and consumers are enabled to transact electricity within the local energy community and with the grid in a coordinated manner to ensure technical and economic benefits for the LEM’s agents. The model is implemented in a software tool called Grid Singularity Exchange (GSyE), and... [more]

Optimal Balance between Heating, Cooling and Environmental Impacts: A Method for Appropriate Assessment of Building Envelope’s U-Value
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: embodied energy, Energy Efficiency, residential building, thermal insulation, U-value
In Europe, the recent application of regulations oriented to zero-energy buildings and climate neutrality in 2050 has led to a reduction in energy consumption for heating and cooling in the construction sector. The thermal insulation of the building envelope plays a key role in this process and the requirements about the maximum allowable thermal transmittance are defined by country-specific guidelines. Typically, high insulation values provide low energy consumption for heating; however, they may also entail a risk of overheating in summer period and thus negatively affect the overall performance of the building. In addition, the embodied energy and related emissions caused by the manufacturing and transportation processes of thermal insulation cannot be further neglected in the evaluation of the best optimal solution. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the influence in terms of embodied and operational energy of various walls’ thermal insulation thicknesses on residential buildin... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: citizens and communities for energy, local markets, renewable energy communities, solar auctions
Every country has objectives for climate change, and public policies are implemented to achieve those commitments. This paper aims to review the different public policies used to promote the integration of photovoltaic technology into smart grids, taking the case of Portugal as reference. An analysis of previous supporting policies is performed both in Portugal and some European countries; these policies consist of feed-in tariffs, feed-in premiums, green certificates, electricity compensation, direct capital subsidies, and tax credits. The policies currently in force in Portugal no longer aim to support the technology; instead, they intend to promote it. Energy communities, local markets, and solar auctions are examples of public policies that are currently being used, not only to promote PV power but also the development of microgrids. Finally, the Portuguese solar auctions of 2019 and 2020 are analyzed and compared. It is concluded that auctions are a very effective way of expanding... [more]
