Design of a Hydrogen Production System Considering Energy Consumption, Water Consumption, CO2 Emissions and Cost
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Hydrogen, hydrogen economy, hydrogen production system, Water-Energy-Carbon nexus
CO2 emissions associated with hydrogen production can be reduced replacing steam methane reforming with electrolysis using renewable electricity with a trade-off of increasing energy consumption, water consumption and cost. In this research, a linear programming optimization model of a hydrogen production system that considers simultaneously energy consumption, water consumption, CO2 emissions and cost on a cradle-to-gate basis was developed. The model was used to evaluate the impact of CO2 intensity on the optimum design of a hydrogen production system for Japan considering different stakeholders’ priorities. Hydrogen is produced using steam methane reforming and electrolysis. Electricity sources include grid, wind, solar photovoltaic, geothermal and hydro. Independent of the stakeholders’ priorities, steam methane reforming dominates hydrogen production for cradle-to-gate CO2 intensities larger than 9 kg CO2/kg H2, while electrolysis using renewable electricity dominates for lower cr... Hydrogen and Methane Production by Single- and Two-Stage Anaerobic Digestion of Second Cheese Whey: Economic Performances and GHG Emissions Evaluation
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, GHG emissions, Hydrogen, hythane, second cheese whey
This study aimed at evaluating the economic performances of and carbon footprint associated with innovative systems for the energetic valorization of second cheese whey (SCW), a by-product of whey cheese manufacture, through anaerobic digestion processes. Three systems were modeled: a conventional single-stage anaerobic digester (FAD), located at about 50 km from the dairy factory; an on-site conventional single-stage anaerobic digester (CAD), located at the dairy industry; and an on-site two-stage anaerobic digester (TAD). The TAD technology enables the simultaneous production of hydrogen and methane on site. The biogases produced were combusted in combined heat and power plants (CHP), but only the onsite systems provided process heat to the dairy factory. In the specific conditions assumed, TAD configuration exhibited a higher energy output, which led to a GHG emission reduction of about 60% compared to FAD, mostly thanks to the additional hydrogen (H2) production and the improved en... Liquefied Natural Gas and Hydrogen Regasification Terminal Design through Neural Network Estimated Demand for the Canary Islands
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy demand forecast, Hydrogen, LNG regasification terminal, LOHC, Modelling, neural network
This publication explores how the existing synergies between conventional liquefied natural gas regasification and hydrogen hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processes can be exploited. Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier methodology has been analyzed for hydrogen processes from a thermodynamic point of view to propose an energy integration system to improve energy efficiency during hybridization periods. The proposed neural network can acceptably predict power demand using daily average temperature as a single predictor, with a mean relative error of 0.25%, while simulation results based on the estimated natural gas peak demand show that high-pressure compression is the most energy-demanding process in conventional liquefied natural gas regasification processes (with more than 98% of the total energy consumption). In such a scenario, exceeding energy from liquid organic hydrogen carrier processes have been used as a Rankine’s cycle input to produce both power for the high-pressure compres... [more]

Potential Application of Canola Hull Fuel Pellets for the Production of Synthesis Gas and Hydrogen
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biochar, biopellets, canola hull, Hydrogen, steam gasification, supercritical water gasification
The production of biopellets from agricultural residues is an effective method to overcome the expected shortage in the supply of fuel pellets in the future. This work focused on the new potential applications of fuel pellets to produce liquid and gas fuels through thermochemical and hydrothermal biomass-to-gas technologies. The outcomes also provide a basis to compare the effects of steam and hydrothermal gasification techniques on the properties of product and byproduct, as well as their potentials. For steam gasification, the syngas yield increased from 10.7 to 27.8 mmol/g (on a dry and ash-free basis) by a rise in the gasification temperature at a constant steam-to-biomass ratio. In the case of hydrothermal gasification, there was no carbon monoxide, and hydrogen was the main gas product, and with an increase in the temperature, the hydrogen yield rose from 0.4 mmol/g to 3.17 mmol/g with temperatures from 350 to 650 °C. CO had the largest share in the gas product from steam gasific... [more]

Renewable energy supply is essential for carbon neutrality; however, technologies aiming to optimally utilize renewable energy sources remain insufficient. Seasonal variability in renewable energy is a key issue, which many studies have attempted to overcome through operating systems and energy storage. Currently, hydrogen is the only technology that can solve this seasonal storage problem. In this study, the amount of hydrogen required to circumvent the seasonal variability in renewable energy supply in Korea was quantified. Spatiotemporal analysis was conducted using renewable energy resource maps and power loads. It was predicted that 50% of the total power demand in the future will be met using solar and wind power, and a scenario was established based on the solar-to-wind ratio. It was found that the required hydrogen production differed by approximately four-times, depending on the scenarios, highlighting the importance of supplying renewable energy at an appropriate ratio. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: free piston, homogeneous charge compression ignition, Hydrogen, NOx emission, water vapor
A numerical model of the micro-free-piston engine was developed and its correctness was verified by the comparison between the simulation and referential experiment results under the same work conditions. Based on this numerical model, the effects of the water vapor blending ratio (α) on combustion thermal performance and emission characteristics of hydrogen (H2) homogeneous charge compressing ignition (HCCI) were investigated numerically. The water vapor impact on combustion temperature was analyzed as well. The simulation results reveal that when the initial equivalent ratio is 0.5, blending H2 with water vapor can delay the ignition time and prolong the whole process. At the same time, the addition of water vapor to H2 decreases the peak combustion temperature and pressure, which will alleviate the detonation phenomenon of the combustion chamber. Moreover, the power output capacity and NOx emissions decrease with the increase in α. When α increases to 0.8, the mixture gas cannot be... [more]

Can Industry Keep Gas Distribution Networks Alive? Future Development of the Gas Network in a Decarbonized World: A German Case Study
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: CO2 transport, gas distribution network, gas transportation network, Hydrogen, industry gas demand, synthetic methane
With the growing need for decarbonization, the future gas demand will decrease and the necessity of a gas distribution network is at stake. A remaining industrial gas demand on the distribution network level could lead to industry becoming the main gas consumer supplied by the gas distribution network, leading to the question: can industry keep the gas distribution network alive? To answer this research question, a three-stage analysis was conducted, starting from a rough estimate of average gas demand per production site and then increasing the level of detail. This paper shows that about one third of the German industry sites investigated are currently supplied by the gas distribution network. While the steel industry offers new opportunities, the food and tobacco industry alone cannot sustain the gas distribution network by itself.

Hydrogen is a key enabler of a sustainable society. Refurbishment of the existing natural gas infrastructure for up to 100% H2 is considered one of the most energy- and resource-efficient energy transportation methods. The question remains whether the transportation of 100% H2 with reasonable adaptions of the infrastructure and comparable energy amounts to natural gas is possible. The well-known critical components for refurbishment, such as increased compressor power, reduced linepack as well as pipeline transport efficiencies, and their influencing factors were considered based on thermodynamic calculations with a step-by-step overview. A H2 content of 20−30% results in comparable operation parameters to pure natural gas. In addition to transport in pipelines, decentralized H2 production will also play an important role in addressing future demands.
